Abstract: Introduction -- Hunting architecture -- Rangifer hunting and hunters -- The ancient Great Lakes: paleoenvironment and archaeology throughout the Pleistocene-Holocene transition -- Hunting architecture underwater: interdisciplinary Investigations under Lake Huron -- Interpreting prior research: a model of foraging lifeways on the Alpena-Amberley Ridge -- Testing the model: new methods and results -- Conclusions.
Abstract: "Combining underwater archaeology, terrestrial archaeology, and ethnographic and historical research, The Architecture of Hunting investigates the creation and use of hunting architecture by hunter-gatherers. Hunting architecture -- including blinds, drive lanes, and fishing weirs -- is a global phenomenon found across a broad spectrum of cultures, time, geography, and environments. Relying on similar behaviors in species such as caribou, bison, guanacos, antelope, and gazelles, cultures as diverse as Sami reindeer herders, the Inka, and ancient bison hunters on the North American plains have utilized such structures, combined with strategically situated landforms, to insure adequate food supplies and to successfully maintain a nomadic way of life. Ashley K. Lemke explores hunting architecture as a form of human niche construction and considers the myriad ways such built structures affect hunter-gatherer lifeways. Her research presents examples of hunting architecture from across the globe and how they influence forager mobility, territoriality, property, leadership, and labor aggregation. The book goes on to outline the archaeological investigation of hunting architecture in the past and provides new data on Ice Age caribou hunting structures preserved underneath the Great Lakes: some of oldest hunting architecture on the planet"--

Abstract: "Powerful Pictures interrogates the driving forces behind global rock art research. Many of the rock art motifs featured in the 16 chapters of this book were created by indigenous hunter-gatherer groups, and it sheds new light on non-Western rituals and worldviews, many of which are threatened or on the point of extinction. Stemming from a conference in Val Camonica in northern Italy, the book is arranged by continent, although it tackles how early research in some countries (e.g., Sweden, France, Spain, the USA, Canada, South Africa) influenced the trajectory of archaeological investigations in others (e.g., Australia, India, Mexico, Germany, Mongolia, Russia). All of the contributing authors have vast experience working with rock art and Indigenous communities, many of them holding posts in prestigious university departments around the world. The book will be of particular interest to professional historians, archaeologists, and anthropologists, and indeed anyone who is interested in art, symbolism, and the past."--

Abstract: Presented to Stan Beckensall on his 90th birthday, this diverse and stimulating collection of papers celebrates his crucial contribution to rock art studies, and also looks to the future. It should be of value to students of prehistoric Britain and Ireland, and anyone with an interest in rock art, for many decades to come. Stan has done a phenomenal amount of work over recent decades, on an entirely amateur basis, discovering, recording and interpreting Atlantic rock art ('cup-and-ring marks') in his home county of Northumberland and elsewhere. Much of this work was done in the 1970s and 1980s when the subject, now increasingly regarded as mainstream within Neolithic studies, was largely shunned by professional archaeologists. Anyone with an interest in rock art is greatly indebted to Stan, not only for his work and his wisdom, so graciously shared, but also, as the contributors to this volume make clear, for the inspiration he has provided, and continues to provide, for work undertaken by others.

(Verlagsangaben)

Abstract: A fascinating case study of the archaeological site at Murujuga, AustraliaLocated in the Dampier Archipelago of Western Australia, Murujuga is the single largest archaeological site in the world. It contains an estimated one million petroglyphs, or rock art motifs, produced by the Indigenous Australians who have historically inhabited the archipelago. To date, there has been no comprehensive survey of the site's petroglyphs or those who created them. Since the 1960s, regional mining interests have caused significant damage to this site, destroying an estimated 5 to 25 percent of the petroglyphs in Murujuga. Today, Murujuga holds the unenviable status of being one of the most endangered archaeological sites in the world.José Antonio González Zarandona provides a full postcolonial analysis of Murujuga as well as a geographic and archaeological overview of the site, its ethnohistory, and its considerable significance to Indigenous groups, before examining the colonial mistreatment of Murujuga from the seventeenth century to the present. Drawing on a range of postcolonial perspectives, Zarandona reads the assaults on the rock art of Murujuga as instances of what he terms "landscape iconoclasm": the destruction of art and landscapes central to group identity in pursuit of ideological, political, and economic dominance. Viewed through the lens of landscape iconoclasm, the destruction of Murujuga can be understood as not only the result of economic pressures but also as a means of reinforcing—through neglect, abandonment, fragmentation, and even certain practices of heritage preservation—the colonial legacy in Western Australia. Murujuga provides a case study through which to examine, and begin to reject, archaeology's global entanglement with colonial intervention and the politics of heritage preservation

Abstract: The Basler Afrika Bibliographien (BAB) houses the multi-media archives of the well-known German-Namibian photographers and (rock-art) researchers Anneliese and Ernst Rudolf Scherz. Their vast and diverse collections consist predominantly of image and paper documents and also include a so-called ethnographic object collection. This survey attempts to make the latter collection accessible to research in the form of a Working Paper. It comes at a time when the various Scherz collections at the BAB have been catalogued and digitalised to a larger extent.

Abstract: Das Frobenius-Institut für kulturanthropologische Forschung an der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt a.

Abstract: Claimed by many to be the most frequently documented artifact in American archeology, Dighton Rock is a forty-ton boulder covered in petroglyphs in southern Massachusetts. First noted by New England colonists in 1680, the rock's markings have been debated endlessly by scholars and everyday people alike on both sides of the Atlantic. The glyphs have been erroneously assigned to an array of non-Indigenous cultures: Norsemen, Egyptians, Lost Tribes of Israel, vanished Portuguese explorers, and even a prince from Atlantis. In this fascinating story rich in personalities and memorable characters, Douglas Hunter uses Dighton Rock to reveal the long, complex history of colonization, American archaeology, and the conceptualization of Indigenous people. Hunter argues that misinterpretations of the rock's markings share common motivations and have erased Indigenous people not only from their own history, but from the landscape. He shows how Dighton Rock for centuries drove ideas about the original peopling of the Americas, including Bering Strait migration scenarios and the identity of the ""Mound Builders."" He argues the debates over Dighton Rock have served to answer two questions: Who belongs in America, and to whom does America belong?
Description / Table of Contents: A lost Portuguese explorer's American boulder -- First impressions and first arrivals: colonists encounter Dighton Rock -- Altogether ignorant: denying an indigenous provenance and constructing gothicism -- Multiple migrations: esotericism, Beringia, and Native Americans as Tartar hordes -- Stones of power: Edward Augustus Kendall's esoteric case for Dighton Rock's indigeneity -- Colonization's new epistemology: American archaeology and the road to the Trail of Tears -- Vinland imagined: the Norsemen and the gothicists claim Dighton Rock -- Shingwauk's reading: Dighton Rock and Henry Rowe Schoolcraft's troubled ethnology -- Reversing Dighton Rock's polarity: Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, the American Ethnological Society, and the Grave Creek Stone -- Meaningless scribblings: Edmund Burke Delabarre, lazy Indians, and the Corte-Real theory -- American place-making: Dighton Rock as a Portuguese relic -- The stone's place: Dighton Rock Museum and narratives of power.

Abstract: A newcomer to Broome, Colin Everett is drawn into a fierce dispute about native title known as 'the Bradshaw case'. The disappearance of a key witness points to threats of blackmail, or even worse. To win the case for the Aboriginal claimants, Colin and his fellow lawyers have to find the witness, get the better of their opponents, and probe the origin of ancient rock art in the Kimberley region. The case ends in a swirl of controversy and a crucial verdict. It offers a poignant glimpse of how the future can be shaped by half-truths and human failings, by contested versions of the past

Abstract: Introduction: the Utes from Utah and Colorado -- Ute rock art of western Colorado -- Historic rock art of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation -- Summary
Abstract: Klappentext: Clifford Duncan, a Northern Ute elder, believed in educating the public to know and understand the meaning of Ute petroglyphs. By doing this, he believed it would help to preserve and protect them. Over the course of eight years, Clifford and the author visited and revisited all of these sites, discussing what they might represent. Clifford's father was an Uncompahgre Ute and wanted Clifford to know the traditional homelands of the Uncompahgres in western Colorado. Clifford made special trips all through the Uncompahgre Plateau (by car, on foot, and on horseback), seeking out any Ute petroglyphs and cultural sites. Later in his life, he and the author visited many of the petroglyphs on the Uintah-Ouray Reservation, along Hill Creek and Willow Creek. These petroglyphs were authored by the Uncompahgre and White River Utes. The interpretations of the petroglyphs of western Colorado and the Uintah-Ouray Reservation are supplemented with cultural and political history to provide a background context to Clifford's interpretations. In addition, ethnographic information from other scholars provides readers with a deep appreciation as to what makes Ute petroglyphs so unique and fascinating.

Abstract: This meticulous investigation, based around a famous rock image, the 'White Lady', makes it possible to take stock of the mythical presuppositions that infuse a great deal of scientific research, especially in the case of rock art studies. It also highlights the existence of some surprising bridges between scholarly works and literary or artistic productions (novels, films, comic strips, adventure tales). The examination of the abbe Breuil's archives and correspondence shows that the primary motivation of the work he carried out in southern Africa like that of his pupil Henri Lhote in the Tassili was the search for ancient, vanished 'white' colonies which were established, in prehistory, in the heart of the dark continent. Both Breuil and Lhote found paintings on African rocks that, in their view, depicted 'white women' who were immediately interpreted as goddesses or queens of the ancient kingdoms of which they believed they had found the vestiges. In doing this, they were reviving and nourishing two myths at the same time: that of a Saharan Atlantis for Henri Lhote and, for the abbe, that of the identification of the great ruins of Zimbabwe with the mythical city of Ophir from which, according to the Bible, King Solomon derived his fabulous wealth. With hindsight we can now see very clearly that their theories were merely a clumsy reflection of the ideas of their time, particularly in the colonial context of the Sahara and in the apartheid of South Africa. Without their knowledge, these two scholars' scientific production was used to justify the white presence in Africa, and it was widely manipulated to that end. And yet recent studies have demonstrated that the 'White Lady' who so fascinated the abbe Breuil was in reality neither white nor even a woman. One question remains: if such an interpenetration of science and myth in the service of politics was possible in the mid-20th century, could it happen today?

Abstract: This absorbing volume examines the cultural role of rock art for the Apsaalooke, or Crow, people of the northern Great Plains. Their extensive rock art developed within the changing cultural life of the tribe. Individual knowledge and meaning of rock art panels, however, relies as much on collective concepts of landscape as it does on shared memories of historic Crow culture. Using this idea as a focus, this book: Introduces Plains Indian rock art of the 19th century as we know about it from its own stylistic conventions, ethnographic data, and historical accounts Investigates the contemporary Crow discourse about rock art and its place within the cultural landscape and archaeological record Argues that cultural concepts of space and place are fundamental to the way rock art is discussed, experienced and interpreted.

Abstract: The prehistoric hunter-gatherers of the Lower Pecos Canyonlands of Texas and Coahuila, Mexico, created some of the most spectacularly complex, colorful, extensive, and enduring rock art of the ancient world. Perhaps the greatest of these masterpieces is the White Shaman mural, an intricate painting that spans some twenty-six feet in length and thirteen feet in height on the wall of a shallow cave overlooking the Pecos River. In The White Shaman Mural, Carolyn E. Boyd takes us on a journey of discovery as she builds a convincing case that the mural tells a story of the birth of the sun and the beginning of time-making it possibly the oldest pictorial creation narrative in North America. Unlike previous scholars who have viewed Pecos rock art as random and indecipherable, Boyd demonstrates that the White Shaman mural was intentionally composed as a visual narrative, using a graphic vocabulary of images to communicate multiple levels of meaning and function. Drawing on twenty-five years of archaeological research and analysis, as well as insights from ethnohistory and art history, Boyd identifies patterns in the imagery that equate, in stunning detail, to the mythologies of Uto-Aztecan-speaking peoples, including the ancient Aztec and the present-day Huichol. This paradigm-shifting identification of core Mesoamerican beliefs in the Pecos rock art reveals that a shared ideological universe was already firmly established among foragers living in the Lower Pecos region as long as four thousand years ago.Winner, Society for American Archarology Book Award, 2017

Abstract: Äthiopien - ein Land voller Kontraste.
