Abstract: This is a study of the responses, especially the armed resistance, of the Turkana people of north-western Kenya to British colonial administration in the early twentieth century. From their first encounters with the colonial vanguard in the 1890s to the final surrender of the great Diviner, Loolel Kokoi, in 1926 many Turkana resisted imperial conquest. Even after the imposition of colonial rule, they continued to oppose the administration though a variety of strategies. This is the first full study of the pastoral Turkana people. In exploring their responses to European colonialism John Lamphear makes extenstive use or oral sources, as well as archival and published material. His analysis is also intended as an exercise in military history, and it addresses the fundamental question of why some African societies met the European advance with armed resistance while others did not. The Scattering Time make an important contribution to the historiography of the imperial conquest of Africa and especially Kenya. (Umschlagtext)

Abstract: The Sudan, the largest county in Africa, is undergoing a period of rapid, often dramatic, change. Political strife, ecological disasters, and economic crises have overtaken many of its people, leading to widespread population movement, urban growth, inflation, and social unrest. The live of Sudanese women particularly are becoming very different as they assume new roles and responsibilities in response to altered circumstances.Susan Kenyon looks at developments in Sudanese society through the eyes and words of five women from the town of Sennar in Blue Nile Province. She illustrates the stengths and stability of local community and family life through the careers of a hairdresser, a market woman, a midwife, a holy woman, and a leader of a spirit possession cult. These women talk about their families and homes, their work and their social lives, their hopes and aspiration. Their accounts offer insight into contemporary life in a major developing country and the changing role of women within its society. (Umschlagtext)

Abstract: Famine that Kills is a unique study based on detailed field research carried out during the terrible famine of 1984-85 in the Darfur region of Sudan. De Waal adopts the original approach of analyzing the famine from the perspective of the rural people who suffered through it and in the process uncovers a number of new and important insights. When news of the famine broke, it was predicted that without massive food aid, millions of people would starve. The aid did not arrive, yet millions continued to survive. De Waal argues that death was caused primarily by disease brought about by social disruption. In addition, the priority for rural people during the crisis was not to try to save every life, but instead to preserve their way of life for the future. Consequently, he concludes, the huge international famine relief effort was largely irrelevant to their survival.Recounting the untold story of the Sudanese famine--how rural Sudanese were able to survive on their own resources, using skill, local knowledge, and great tenacity--de Waal's multidisciplinary study will have profound implications, not just for famine relief policies, but for our very conception of "famine" itself.
