Abstract: In this book, Suzanne Preston Blier examines the intersection of art, risk and creativity in early African arts from the Yoruba center of Ife and the striking ways that ancient Ife artworks inform society, politics, history and religion. Yoruba art offers a unique lens into one of Africa's most important and least understood early civilizations, one whose historic arts have long been of interest to local residents and Westerners alike because of their tour-de-force visual power and technical complexity. Among the complementary subjects explored are questions of art making, art viewing and aesthetics in the famed ancient Nigerian city-state, as well as the attendant risks and danger assumed by artists, patrons and viewers alike in certain forms of subject matter and modes of portrayal, including unique genres of body marking, portraiture, animal symbolism and regalia. This volume celebrates art, history and the shared passion and skill with which the remarkable artists of early Ife sought to define their past for generations of viewers.

Abstract: Examining the process of abolition on the island of Pemba off the East African coast in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, this book demonstrates the links between emancipation and the redefinition of honour among all classes of people on the island. By examining the social vulnerability of ex-slaves and the former slave-owning elite caused by the abolition order of 1897, this study argues that moments of resistance on Pemba reflected an effort to mitigate vulnerability rather than resist the hegemonic power of elites or the colonial state. As the meaning of the Swahili word heshima shifted from honour to respectability, individuals' reputations came under scrutiny and the Islamic kadhi and colonial courts became an integral location for interrogating reputations in the community. This study illustrates the ways in which former slaves used piety, reputation, gossip, education, kinship and witchcraft to negotiate the gap between emancipation and local notions of belonging.

Abstract: This book traces the history and development of the port of Benguela, the third largest port of slave embarkation on the coast of Africa, from the early seventeenth to the mid-nineteenth century. Benguela, located on the central coast of present-day Angola, was founded by the Portuguese in the early seventeenth century. In discussing the impact of the trans-Atlantic slave trade on African societies, Mariana P. Candido explores the formation of new elites, the collapse of old states and the emergence of new states. Placing Benguela in an Atlantic perspective, this study shows how events in the Caribbean and Brazil affected social and political changes on the African coast. This book emphasizes the importance of the South Atlantic as a space for the circulation of people, ideas and crops.Review: 'Mariana Candido has written a major study of a slaving port and its linkages both to the South Atlantic system and to its hinterland. She makes a powerful argument about the way the slave trade shaped not only the development of Benguela but also African societies in its hinterland. She also makes an important argument on the role of female entrepreneurs in that process.' Martin Klein, University of Toronto 'Mariana Candido's splendidly well-researched study of the Benguela slave trade is a major advance in our understanding of the history of Benguela, Angola's 'other' slaving port. It not only illuminates the history of the Portuguese presence in Angola but also helps to anchor the politics and history of the independent states of the Central Highlands of Angola in their regional context. It will be a starting point for studies of the region for years to come.' John Thornton, Boston University

Abstract: "This book argues that Angola and Brazil were connected, not separated, by the Atlantic Ocean. Roquinaldo Ferreira focuses on the cultural, religious and social impacts of the slave trade on Angola. Reconstructing biographies of Africans and merchants, he demonstrates how cross-cultural trade, identity formation, religious ties and resistance to slaving were central to the formation of the Atlantic world. By adding to our knowledge of the slaving process, the book powerfully illustrates how Atlantic slaving transformed key African institutions, such as local regimes of forced labor that predated and coexisted with Atlantic slaving and made them fundamental features of the Atlantic world's social fabric"--This book argues that Angola and Brazil were connected, not separated, by the Atlantic Ocean. Reconstructing biographies of Africans and merchants, he demonstrates how cross-cultural trade, identity formation, religious ties and resistance to slaving were central to the formation of the Atlantic world. By adding to our knowledge of the slaving process, the book powerfully illustrates how Atlantic slaving transformed key African institutions, such as local regimes of forced labor that predated and coexisted with Atlantic slaving and made them fundamental features of the Atlantic world's social fabric.Review: 'With great historical imagination, Ferreira resurrects detailed stories of individuals who were integrally tied to the largest branch of the Atlantic slave trade. In so doing, he shows the limitations of analytical categories that historians have applied in slave studies. The world Ferreira describes was one in which commoners and elites alike constantly reshaped social and cultural identities to fit particular circumstances. His innovative 'microhistorical' approach charts a new direction for Atlantic history.' Walter Hawthorne, Michigan State University and author of From Africa to Brazil: Culture, Identity, and an Atlantic Slave Trade, 1600-1830 'Despite its Atlantic dimension, this is not a conventional tale of two continents that influenced each other, but rather a narrative of how influence came about through interconnection, the latter being itself a subject of analysis and narrative. The immense drama and trauma of such relations, I believe, become more apparent and more human once it is seen from the perspective of personal experiences, of individual lives that can guide the author (and the reader) in a voyage through the worlds of enslavement, slavery, colonial sociabilities, commerce, and political, juridical, and religious practices. I think that Ferreira's book is a path-breaking, learned, and compelling study of life in the South Atlantic.' Joao Jose Reis, Universidade Federal de Bahia (UFBA), Brazil and author of Death Is a Festival: Funeral Rites and Popular Rebellion in Nineteenth-Century Brazil 'Assiduously researched, Cross-Cultural Exchange in the Atlantic World is a fascinating account of the economic, social, and cultural ties binding Angola and Brazil during the era of the slave trade. Ferreira demonstrates in intimate detail the human stories that bridged the South Atlantic, rendering Angola and Brazil a single, contiguous, geographical region. This groundbreaking effort reframes our understandings of Atlantic history, emphasizing south/south cultural fluidity and centering Africa as a crucial impetus for broad historical change.' James H. Sweet, University of Wisconsin

Abstract: Focusing on colonial Kenya, this book shows how conflicts between state authorities and Africans over witchcraft-related crimes provided an important space in which the meanings of justice, law and order in the empire were debated. Katherine Luongo discusses the emergence of imperial networks of knowledge about witchcraft. She then demonstrates how colonial concerns about witchcraft produced an elaborate body of jurisprudence about capital crimes. The book analyzes the legal wrangling that produced the Witchcraft Ordinances in the 1910s, the birth of an anthro-administrative complex surrounding witchcraft in the 1920s, the hotly contested Wakamba Witch Trials of the 1930s, the explosive growth of legal opinion on witch-murder in the 1940s, and the unprecedented state-sponsored cleansings of witches and Mau Mau adherents during the 1950s. A work of anthropological history, this book develops an ethnography of Kamba witchcraft or uoi.Review: 'This is one of the finest historical ethnographies of witchcraft and statecraft that I have read. Luongo simultaneously gives account of Kamba witchcraft and of the British colonial juridical system through which it was policed - two cosmologies that not only came into conflict but that also profoundly shaped one another over time. The rich detail of the work - a reading of the archives at once anthropological and historical - makes for captivating reading and, in light of the continuing, sometimes explosive, juxtaposition of witchcraft and formal legal systems in postcolonial East Africa and beyond, a work of significant contemporary relevance.' Harry G. West, SOAS, University of London 'Where witchcraft is very often taken to be a peculiar aspect of Africans' mentality, Luongo's fine book shows how the occult was translated, disciplined, and organized by British and Kenyan brokers. The regulation of witchcraft was one of the tensions of empire, an occupation in which Kenyan practitioners played a role alongside British authorities. Luongo's book allows us to see how witches haunted colonial power, giving us new insights into the uncertainties of governance.' Derek Peterson, University of Michigan, and author of Creative Writing: Translation, Bookkeeping, and the Work of Imagination in Kenya 'Luongo's vivid style of anthropological history brings out the full complexity of colonial officials' positioning toward the witchcraft conundrum. But the interest of this groundbreaking study is much broader. Luongo's imaginative analysis of rich legal data and people's memories shows witchcraft to be an ongoing, basic challenge to state formation as such, up to the present day.' Peter Geschiere, University of Amsterdam, and author of The Modernity of Witchcraft: Politics of the Occult in Postcolonial Africa 'Through its analysis of judicial matters concerning witchcraft, this book makes an important contribution to understandings of the construction of both the colonial and postcolonial state. It illustrates the reliance of an anthropological history on legal research.' Herve Maupeu, Universite de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour '[Witchcraft and Colonial Rule in Kenya, 1900-1955] forces readers to re-imagine the construct of law and perceptions of order in relation to empire and will undoubtedly become essential reading for Africanist scholars of various specialities.' Abstract: There are few countries in Europe which contain within an area as small as the British Isles such a variety of natural environments and cultures as Yugoslavia. This book provides a survey of the history of the South Slav peoples who came together at the end of the First World War to form the first Yugoslav kingdom, and who emerged from the chaos of the Second World War to become citizens of a socialist federal republic, led by the Communist Party under the leadership of Marshal Tito. Beginning in Roman times, the book traces the rise and fall of the medieval Slav principalities, the dominance of the Ottoman and Habsburg empires, the proclamation of the kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1918, the disastrous effects of the German occupation and the creation of a new socialist order under President Tito.

Abstract: This book studies the impact of the Atlantic slave trade on the "Slave Coast" of West Africa, an area covering modern south-eastern Ghana, Togo, Benin, and south-western Nigeria. This region was one of the most important sources of slaves for the Atlantic slave trade, and its history provides an exceptionally well-documented illustration of the effect of the trade on the indigenous African societies of the Slave Coast. The expansion of slave exports during the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries coincided with a period of political disorder, which ended with the rise of the new kingdom of Dahomey. Dahomey was a more militarized and more politically centralized state than those which preceded it in the region, and its distinctive character reflected the impact of the slace trade. This is the first detailed study of the early history of the Slave Coast for over twenty years. Robin Law examines the events which preceded the rise of Dahomey, the organization of the slave trade and its impact on the domestic economy, and the social and political structure of Dahomey and its predecessors. This is a meticulously researched, lucid, and scholarly analysis which makes an important contribution to the history both of early modern European expansion and of pre-colonial West Africa

Abstract: In this new edition, Olivier Roy expands his penetrating study of the history, ideology and structures of the Afghan resistance movement to mid-1989. He examines the evolution of the military and political situation inside Afghanistan during the last years of the Soviet presence and discusses relations between the Afghan resistance and the Islamic fundamentalist movement. The situation created by the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan is also explored, and in a new conclusion Professor Roy assesses to what extent the war has altered the traditional fabric of Afghan society.

Abstract: Famine that Kills is a unique study based on detailed field research carried out during the terrible famine of 1984-85 in the Darfur region of Sudan. De Waal adopts the original approach of analyzing the famine from the perspective of the rural people who suffered through it and in the process uncovers a number of new and important insights. When news of the famine broke, it was predicted that without massive food aid, millions of people would starve. The aid did not arrive, yet millions continued to survive. De Waal argues that death was caused primarily by disease brought about by social disruption. In addition, the priority for rural people during the crisis was not to try to save every life, but instead to preserve their way of life for the future. Consequently, he concludes, the huge international famine relief effort was largely irrelevant to their survival.Recounting the untold story of the Sudanese famine--how rural Sudanese were able to survive on their own resources, using skill, local knowledge, and great tenacity--de Waal's multidisciplinary study will have profound implications, not just for famine relief policies, but for our very conception of "famine" itself.
