Abstract:
The book examines in depth the foreign policy of the Malagasy Government between 1861 and 1895. Seeking to encourage European traders and missionaries to live and work in Madagascar the Malagasy leaders embraced Protestantism which, they believed, would draw their country closer to the Europeans and accelerate their development. This decisson annoyed the Catholic French who revived their interest in colonising the "Great African Island" and in 1883 the two countries went to war. Though the war was inconclusive France suceeded in colonising Madgascar in 1895. (Klappentext)
