Abstract:
Thapa uses survey data, to identify processes of socio-economic differentiation (from 1970-1980); to examine historical relations among landlords, traditional labour obligations and the role of caste; to examine the circumstances under which an individual or household selects migration and investigates the consequensces of migration. The research and investigation reveal, contrary to Chayanov's widely accepted thesis, access to land determines family size and not vice-versa. Individual migration is not necessarily a precursor for household migration and remittances from individual migrants strengthen the household ties to the origen. The research based analysis also explores aspects of migration as and adjustment strategy.
