Abstract: In recent decades, powerful institutions have packaged Western democracy for export around the globe. Although Western democracy is grounded in specific historical experiences and cultural assumptions, advocates have generally taken its normative status for granted. So too have most academics. Yet if democracy is broadly understood as government by "the people," it must necessarily differ along with "the people" in question. Just what "the will of the people" is and how it might be realized become questions of pressing importance. Rather than advance alternative definitions of democracy, celebrate alternative democracies, or posit alternatives to democracy, the contributors to this volume focus on the way that specific definitions of democracy are advanced as normative and others eclipsed, and how certain claims to represent "the will of the people" gain currency and others are silenced. While previous scholars of democracy have proposed one definitive model after another, the authors in this work suggest that democracy is by nature an open ended set of questions about the workings of power—questions best engaged through the dialogical processes of fieldwork and ethnographic writing. Abstract: The World Health Organization (WHO) reported more than 7 million deaths from cancer — 2.5 percent of all deaths—in 2005. Each year there are approximately 11 million new cases, and WHO expects that the number will double by 2020. Although the disease is not uncommon in rich nations, 70 percent of cancer deaths occur in low- and middle-income regions and countries. The growing frequency of the disease reinforces its significance as a metaphor for lack of control and degeneration and as a signifier of difference, something that is part of one`s body and world and yet completely unacceptable. In this book, anthropologists examine the lived experiences of individuals confronting cancer and reveal the social context in which prevention and treatment may succeed or fail. (Umschlagtext)

Abstract: Child laborers in South Asia, child soldiers in Sierra Leone and Uganda, Chinese youth playing computer games to earn virtual gold, youth involved in sex trafficking in the former Soviet republics and Thailand: these are just some of the young people featured in the news of late. The idea that young people are more malleable and the truisms that "youth are the future" or "children are our hope for the future" give news stories and scholarly accounts added meaning. To address how and why youth and children have come to seem so important to globalization, the contributors to this book look at the both the spatial relations and the temporal dimensions of globalization in places as far apart as Oakland, California, and Tamatave, Madagascar, in situations as disparate as the idealization of childhood innocence and the brutal lives of street children. Discourses of, and practices by, youth and children, from the design of toys to political mobilization, are critical sites through which people everywhere conceive of, produce, contest, and naturalize the new futures. Abstract: The book covers selected topics of Eritrea's tradition. The editors have assembled a distinguished set of Eritrean scholars and professionals to contribute to the volume, each capable of addressing individual aspects of Eritrean traditions from their particular fields of expertise. While the methodology and style of analysis have been left to the best judgment of each contributor to use the best practices prevailing in the respective field, each was asked to provide a cogent analytic description of the tradition in question, exposing its essential elements, and to address the implications of those elements to the long-term development of the country. The book is intended to serve two related purposes: first, to document and analyze selected traditional legacies and cultural practices in Eritrea, and second, to establish the linkage of those legacies and practices to Eritrea's current and prospective socio-economic developmental goals. Readers should thus be able to gain a comprehensive picture of how the traditional practices may influence social and economic development in Eritrea. The book is aimed at an interdisciplinary and general audience interested in Eritrea's traditions and its relevance to development issues and concerns. The book can serve as a reference to policy makers and professionals, and as an educational resource for universities and public libraries. Further, consultants and researchers interested in issues related to sustainable economic development and social progress in Eritrea will find the book to be a good source of relevant information.

Abstract: In 1989-90, Congress enacted two laws, the National Museum of the American Indian Act and the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, that required museums and other repositories of Native American human remains and cultural items to consult with, share information about, and return some items to federally recognized Indian tribes and Native Alaskan and Hawaiian communities. What effects have these laws had on anthropological practice, theory, and education in the United States? In 2004-2005, the School for Advanced Research and the Society for Applied Anthropology gathered together a group of anthropological archaeologists to address this question. This volume presents their conclusions and urges a continuing and increasing cooperation between anthropologists and indigenous peoples. (Umschlagtext)

Abstract: In Uruk Mesopotamia & Its Neighbors, ten field and theoretical archaeologists working in the area today offer an overview and analysis of new data and interpretations for Greater Mesopotamia during the late fifth and fourth millennia B.C. They radically reassess the chronological framework for the region, assemble the basic data sets on both local and regional levels, and interpret and synthesize these data in order to put local patterns and dynamics into their widest regional context. Their contributions have applications beyond the cultural history of Mesopotamia itself, reaching into the wider fields of anthropology, history, and political science. With its thorough documentation and comprehensive scope, this volume is an indispensable reference on the state of Mesopotamian archaeology at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Abstract: Indirect rule - the British colonial policy of employing indigenous tribal chiefs as political intermediaries - has typically been understood by scholars as little more than an expedient solution to imperial personnel shortages. A re-examination of the history of indirect rule in South Africa reveals it to have been much more: an ideological strategy designed to win legitimacy for colonial officials. Indirect rule became the basic template from which segregation and apartheid emerged during the twentieth century and set the stage for a post-apartheid debate over African political identity and "traditional authority" that continues to shape South African politics today. This new study, based on firsthand field research and archival material only recently made available to scholars, unveils the inner workings of South African segregation. Drawing influence from a range of political theorists including Machiavelli, Marx, Weber, Althusser, and Zizek, Myers develops a groundbreaking understanding of the ways in which leaders struggle to legitimize themselves through the costuming of political power. J. C.Myers is associate professor of political science at California State University, Stanislaus.

Series Statement: International Series of Psychosocial Perspectives on Trauma, Displaced People, and Political Violence
Keywords: Flüchtling Frau ; Kurde ; Gesundheit ; Leid ; Psychologie ; Psychiatrie ; Norwegen
Abstract: This is probably the only book of it kind that focuses exclusively on refugee women, and one of the few that limit their scope only to one group of refugees - the Kurds, in this case. Although the book is about Kurdish women in Norway, its appeal and contents are nevertheless of universal value and applicability. The general reader will get an unparalleled insight into a therapeutic way of working with refugees and the specialist reader will have a vast range of themes to feast on. These include theoretical considerations of ideas about collective trauma, narrative life stories, working cross-culturally, mental health perspectives on refugees, and the formation of meaning, to mention but a few. Review: 'This remarkable book is the second in the International Series of Psychosocial Perspectives on Trauma, Displaced People and Political Violence and it continues to offer what the first volume did - a unique opporunity for English-speaking readers to familiarise themselves with important European contributions in this field which are not usually accessible to them.'Nora Ahlberg allows us to get privileged close look at her practice and to listen to the voices of her refugee clients. But her book is much more than a reproduction of their tumultuous experiences. It achieves a most sensitive balance between providing authentic testimonies of suffering and endurance, and articulating an authoritative and scholarly methodology for treating this delicate material. I am not aware of any other book that addresses so ably both of these facets of the refugee experience.' - Renos K. Papadopoulos, from the Series Editor's Foreword 'Ahlberg's source material consists of narratives by traumatised Kurdish refugees as they have been told to her in a therapeutic situation while using an interpreter. A main point is that these narratives are not merely about the past tragedies of these refugees, but that they just as much represent their attempts at reinterpreting their lives and creating meaning in a new culture. 'They all share the topic of how refugee narratives of traumatic experiences are used as a source for cultural knowledge. The said narratives emerge as a rich source material for comparative religion. Ahlberg's approach is characterised by her broad interdisciplinary competence where the history of religion, psychology, sociological and narratological perspectives are utilised in order to reach a holistic perspective.' - Professor Einar Thomassen, University of Bergen, Islamic and Sufi studies '"No Five Fingers are Alike" is a study of trauma from a wider, interdisciplinary point of view... It documents extensive knowledge of the many-faced sides of trauma therapy, and is obviously very interesting and useful for both academics and professionals in the fi eld. The book is written in a matter-of-fact manner, which balances very well with the almost explosive empirical evidence of human violations described and analysed... It emphasises a need for multicultural awareness and interdisciplinary approaches...' - Professor Yngve Lithman, University of Bergen, Head of Interdisciplinary International Migration and Ethnic Relations Studies, Sociologist

Abstract: With the increasing worldwide problems of migration, research into its causes and effects become every more urgent. This volume takes stock of recent advancements that social science research in both Europe and the United States has made to understanding central aspects of international migration. The focus is on conceptual, methodological, and theoretical contributions that have emerged out of empirical research with regard to state policies and interests toward migration, dual citizenship, incorporation, transnational ties, entrepreneurship, illegal migration, intergenerational incorporation, and religion. No other publication brings the scholarship together in a similarly comprehensive manner, showing how the different approaches on each continent complement and speak to one another, thus contributing to the internationalization of migration studies. Alejandro Portes is Howard Harrison and Gabrielle Snyder Beck Professor of Sociology and director of the Center for Migration and Development at Princeton University. His current research is on the adaptation process of the immigrant second generation and the rise of transnational immigrant communities in the United States. One of his most recent books, co-authored with Ruben G. Rumbaut, is Legacies: The Story of the Immigrant Second Generation and Ethnicities: Children of Immigrants in America (California 2001), winner of the 2002 Distinguished Scholarship Award from the American Sociological Association. Josh DeWind has directed the Migration Program of the Social Science Research Council since 1994. From 1989 to 2002 was a Professor of Anthropology at Hunter College, City University of New York, where he initiated the college's Program on International Human Rights and directed its Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program. He has published numerous books, reports, and articles related to migration including The Handbook of International Migration: The American Experience, edited with Charles Hirschman and Philip Kasinitz (Russell Sage Foundation, 1999), which this current volume updates and provides an international perspective. He was a founding member of the Center for Immigrants Rights, National Coalition for Haitian Rights, and National Immigration Forum.
Description / Table of Contents: Conceptual and methodological developments in the study of international migration -- States and modes of political incorporation -- Transnational communities and immigrant enterprise -- Unauthorized immigration and the second generation -- Religion and migrant incorporation.

Abstract: Growing unease with grand theories of modernization and global integration brought twelve scholars from four disciplines to the School for Advanced Research for an experiment with the research genre known as microhistory. These authors now call for a return to narrative, detailed analysis on a small scale, and the search for unforeseen meanings embedded in cases. The essential feature of this perspective is a search for significance in the microcosm, the large lessons discovered in small worlds. Urging the recognition of potential commonalities among archaeology, history, sociology, and anthropology, the authors propose that historical interpretation should move freely across disciplines, historical study should be held up to the present, and individual lives should be understood as the intersection of biography and history. The authors develop these themes in a kaleidoscope of places and periods—West Africa, the Yucatan peninsula, Italy, Argentina, California, Brazil, Virginia, and Boston, among others. They illuminate discrete places, people, and processes through which both the intimacy of lived experience and the more distant forces that shaped their days can be viewed simultaneously. Abstract: Many of the economic transformations in Africa have been as dramatic as those in Eastern Europe. Yet much of the comparative literature on transitions has overlooked African countries. This 2002 study of Mozambique's shift from a command to a market economy draws on a wealth of empirical material, including archival sources, interviews, political posters and corporate advertisements, to reveal that the state is a central actor in the reform process, despite the claims of neo-liberals and their critics. Alongside the state, social forces - from World Bank officials to rural smallholders - have also accelerated, thwarted or shaped change in Mozambique. M. Anne Pitcher offers an intriguing analysis of the dynamic interaction between previous and emerging agents, ideas and institutions, to explain the erosion of socialism and the politics of privatization in a developing country. She demonstrates that Mozambique's political economy is a heterogenous blend of ideological and institutional continuities and ruptures. (Verlagsangaben)

Abstract: Oil is running out. What`s more, its final depletion, once relegated to a misty future, now seems imminent. In all the more or less apocalyptic discussions of oil and similar depleted resources, nature, labor, and time converge. This volume focuses on how resources, resource-making, and resource-claiming are entangled with experiences of time. Particular expressions of "resource imaginations" often have a strongly temporal aspect: they frame the past, present, and future in certain ways; they propose or preclude certain kinds of time reckoning; they inscribe teleologies; they are imbued with affects of time: nostalgia, hope, dread, spontaneity, and so on. Examining resources as various as silver in Mexico, "diversity" in an American university, and historical documents in Indonesia, the contributors to this volume ask several questions: Under what conditions and with what consequences do people find something to be a resource? What kinds of temporal experiences, concepts, or narratives does thinking of things as resources entail? How does the making and imagining of resources assume or condition particular understandings of past, present, and future? How do understandings of time shape the ways resources are named, managed, or allocated? (Umschlagtext)

Abstract: Memory making is a social practice that links people and things together across time and space and ultimately has material consequences. The intersection of matter and social practice becomes archaeologically visible through the deposits created during social activities. Memories are made, not just experienced, and their material traces allow us to understand the materiality of these practices. Indeed, materiality is not just material culture repackaged. Instead, it is about the interaction of humans and materials within a set of cultural relationships. In this book the authors focus on a set of case studies that illustrate how social memories were made through repeated, patterned, and engaged social practices. "Memory work" also refers to the interpretive activities scholars perform when studying social memory. The contributors to this volume share a common goal to map out the different ways in which to study social memories in past societies programmatically and tangibly. (Umschlagtext)

Abstract: In this 1996 cultural history which considers the transformation of south Indian institutions under British colonial rule in the nineteenth century, Pamela Price focuses on the two former 'little kingdoms' of Ramnad and Sivaganga which came under colonial governance as revenue estates. She demonstrates how rivalries among the royal families and major zamindari temples, and the disintegration of indigenous institutions of rule, contributed to the development of nationalism and identity amongst the people of southern Tamil country. The author also shows how religious symbols and practices going back to the seventeenth century were reformulated and acquired a new significance in the colonial context. Arguing for a reappraisal of the relationship of Hinduism to politics, Price finds that these symbols and practices continue to inform popular expectation of political leadership today.

Abstract: Patterns of Middle Class Consumption in India and China explores the complex history and sociology of the middle class from a comparative perspective. It has papers written by sociologists, anthropologists and political scientists rather than economists, so the emphasis is on cultural shifts rather than economic statistics. The major contribution of this volume is that these two emerging powers of Asia are not, as is usual, compared to the West, but with each other. Considering that these two societies have so much in common in scale, civilization history and as emerging economies, the book is timely. The focus of the book is on the social and political implications of the new consumption patterns among the middle classes of India and China in the context of economic growth, liberalization of markets and globalization. Reflecting upon and critically engaging with the traditional sociological notions on which definitions of the middle class have been based, the book analyzes the intermingling of these notions with new attitudes in the wake of the consumer revolution. More specifically, an entire gamut of aspects of the consumer culture have been explored-tourism, leisure activities and the entertainment industry (art, Karaoke and soap operas) as well as the consumption of experiences through these. It is argued that these phenomena have particular Indian and Chinese incarnations, which need to be analyzed in a manner that does not privilege a limited western experience of globalization. With its fresh insights and perspectives, the book will appeal to students of anthropology, sociology, political science, media studies and cultural studies. It will also be useful for market research professionals.
