Abstract:
The Iranian Revolution of 1979 was a startling and important event. Its outbreak and subsequent course of development were unforeseen by members of the scholarly community and those in the U.S. goverment. Similarly, for all its problems, Iran has shown itself to be more enduring than many in the West had expected, and it constitutes a novel phenomenon whose scope and importance extend well beyond its borders. The book examines the Iranian revolution and the Islamic Republic in terms of religious, political, economic, and social forces. Contributors include some of the leading experts on Iran - those with government and foreign service backgrounds, as well as established academics. (Umschlagtext)
