Abstract: The use of maize was a widespread New World prehistoric cultural phenomenon. This unique crop was cultivated from Mesoamerica to thousands of miles away, across much of South and North America. The plant was shaped, changed, and diversified by the cultures and the environments into which it was taken. The interdependence and coevolution of maize and the people who grew it make the history of maize important to archaeologists, anthropologists, and crop scientists. The quantitative increase and methodological improvement in the recovery of crop remains from archaeological sites have provided an unprecedented opportunity for study of the evolution and phytogeography of maize, shedding light on the cultural history of prehistoric New World peoples. In this volume, scholars from the fields of achaeology, agronomy, genetics, linguistics, and biochemistry address methodological, substantive, and interpretive aspects of understanding prehistorc maize. They examine tradtional and new methods for analyzing archaeological maize and evaluating evolutionary relationships among miiaze types; evaluate patterns of prehistoric maize variation in South America, Mesoamerica, and North America; and explore the many cultural roles of maize in the rich texture of indigenous cultures.
