Abstract: The mortgaging of land is not just economic and legal but also social and cultural. Here, anthropologists, historians, and economists explore origins, variations, and meanings of the land mortgage, and the risks to homes and livelihoods. Combining findings from archives, printed records, and live ethnography, the book describes the changing and problematic assumptions surrounding mortgage. It shows how mortgages affect people on the ground, where local forms of mutuality mix with larger bureaucracies. The outcomes of mortgage in Africa, Europe, Asia, and America challenge economic development orthodoxies, calling for a human-centered exploration of this age-old institution. (Umschlagtext)

Abstract: Political constitutions alone do not guarantee democracy; a degree of economic equality is also essential. Yet contemporary economies, dominated as they are by global finance and political rent-seekers, often block the realization of democracy. The comparative essays and case studies of this volume examine the contradictory relationship between the economy and democracy and highlight the struggles and visions needed to make things more equitable. They explore how our collective aspirations for greater democracy might be informed by serious empirical research on the human economy today. If we want a better world, we must act on existing social realities.

Abstract: What does it mean to be modern in Iran today? Can one properly speak of modernity in relation to what many consider to be the paradigmatic Islamic state? When its 1979 revolution seized the world's attention, the Islamic Republic of Iran became a subject of speculation and misdunderstandig, passion and polemic, making these questions difficult to answer - or even ask. Yet in the wake of September 11, the Middle Eastern political landscape seems to shift daily, making a nuanced study of Iran's political culture and the tremendous changes in that country both timely and imperative.Drawing on her extensive ethnographic fieldwork in Iran and an encyclopedic knowledge of contemporary Iranian politics and culture, anthropologist Fariba Adelkhah investigates modernity in the Islamic Republic of Iran by looking at the growth of individualism bureaucracy, commercial forces, and rationalization in postrevolution Iran. Avoiding a simplistic dualism between a backward and repressive regime on the one side and a civil society representing progress and freedom on the other, Adelkhah argues that public space ist being created through the existence of many religious, political, and economic activities.
