Abstract: The transformations of society contemporary and particularly those resulting from the revolution which took place on 25 April 1974 were decisive in taking on a new relationship between Portugal and the young African Portuguese speaking countries. A secular history united us, marked by political, economic, social and cultural ties that need to be recontextualized without undermining the exceptional common cultural heritage. In this area, the Anthropological Museum of the University of Coimbra timely recognized the importance of the collection - bibliographic, ethnographic and audio-visual - resulting from the scientific and cultural activity developed by the former Diamang and, at the time (1986), property of the Portuguese Society of Enterprises. […]Motivated by these premises, we formalized the research project «Study of the Cultural Heritage of the former Diamond Company of Angola: a contribution to inter-ethnic dialogue and rapprochement with Portuguese-speaking African Countries», submitted to the National Board of Scientific and Technological Research and by the same body approved at the end of 1987. The main objective of the proposal was to "scientifically investigate and pedagogically value the ex-Diamang's estate", which should be immediately transferred to the Anthropological Museum of the University of Coimbra, since it was the empirical basis of the studies. planned. Difficulties in implementing the project were decisive in the orientation and objectives of this publication as a research tool, perhaps the first to be considered by the researcher in addressing the estate. This is admittedly a formal survey of the material that, since 1989, been available to the project team, i.e. the collection ethnographic, the core designated audio-visual and important set of reports and memos relating to activities scientific and cultural of the Diamond Company of Angola. This situation justifies the incidence in those, in contrast to the brief note on the bibliographic material, since it was only transferred to Coimbra in 1993. Their size and recognized importance, even at the international level, led us to act immediately in the technical fields of preservation and registration - practice, moreover, followed in the remaining nuclei, according to the specificity of the support materials and state of conservation - delaying, for obvious reasons, the exhaustive publication of the bibliographic catalog. The publication Diamang: A Study of the Cultural Heritage of the former Angolan Diamond Company should therefore be understood as a thematic inventory through which the valuable and sometimes unpublished documentation gathered over the last decades has been methodologically explicit remarkable time of the Portuguese colonial phenomenon. It is, therefore, a complex and multidisciplinary archive of documentary sources, potentially subsidiary to various scientific disciplines, but itself by the nature of prevailing ideology, which may be the object of study.

Abstract: This study is about dispute settlement in the Comoé Province, Burkina Faso. It focuses on ways in which four principal categories of actors-Karaboro agriculturalists, Fulbe agro-pastoralists, Tiefo Masters of the Earth, and local government officials-handle disputes related to landed resources. The study is based on four years of multi-sited fieldwork between 1988 and 1996, as well as studies of literature and archival material. To understand processes of peace and justice in dispute settlement, the study provides detailed accounts of internal socio-political and cultural dynamics within and between the main groups of actors as well as an ethnography of two cases of violent conflict. The main argument is that dispute settlement prevails in a social field of relations and rights. It is, on the one hand, a matter of mobilising key social relations in order to promote peace, to forgive and make future co-habitation possible. Host-stranger relations as well as those of neighbourhood and friendship are, for example, put to the fore. On the other hand, it is also a matter of claiming rights and attend to what different actors perceive as justice. Rights are articulated in different organisational structures such as the Land and Tenure Reorganisation, the Trade Union of Graziers and the Hunting Organisation. While external actors claim rights in public discourse, in practice they are likely to mobilise relations to 'arrange an affair'. Local actors promote ideologically the maintenance of social relations (for peace and prosperity) in dispute settlement, but look for their rights in practice. Disputes are thus located between peace and justice, but in the shadow of violent conflict. The study concludes that dispute settlement between Karaboro agriculturalists and Fulbe agro-pastoralists should not only be understood as a political run by different actors to gain in disputes, but needs to be situated within the domain of what is regarded as morally and socially 'acceptable' to public opinion beyond ethnic and socio-political boundaries. Abstract: In this book different authors investigates the range of the migration experience in Africa. Because of the variety and complexity of the reasons which surround and underpin why African populations are so mobile, this volume adopts an eclectic approach which illustrates the diversity of theoretical positions, as well as methodological and analytical trends. Examples of the great breadth and richness of empirical insights into human migrations in the contemporary african context are also given. (Verlagsangabe)

Abstract: The morphology of the humerus and femur was examined in three mangabey species (Cercocebus albigena, Cercocebus torquatus, Cercocebus galeritus) and three guenon species (Cercopithecus mitis, Cercopithecus mona, Cercopithecus aethiops). Cercocebus albigena, Cercopithecus mitis, and Cercopithecus mona are strictly arboreal whereas Cercocebus torquatus, Cercocebus galeritus and Cercopithecus aethiops are more frequently utilize terrestrial substrates. Morphological differences, which presumably reflect different positional behaviors, were found within both Cercocebus and Cercopithecus genera. The arboreal Cercocebus albigena differs from the more terrestrial Cercocebus torquatus and Cercocebus galeritus in having more mobile joints and more grecile bones. In Cercocebus torquatus and Cercocebus galeritus, joint movements tends to be restricted to the parasagittal plane emphasizing the economy of parasagittal excursion of the limbs. Similar tendencies were observed between the arboreal Cercopithecus mitis and Cercopithecus mona and the semi-terrestrial Cercopithecus aethiops. However, the morphological distinctions, associated to arboreality vs. terrestriality, are not identical between Cercopithecus and Cercopithecus. Semi-terrestrial mangabeys exhibit stronger adaptations for terrestrialiy by comparison with the semi-terrestrial guenon. While the postcrania of the arboreal mangabey seem to be adaptive for deliberate movements in trees, those of the arboreal guenons suggest more rapid and agile activities. In addition, the arboreal Cercopithecus mona exhibits features related to leaping, which are not found in the more deliberately moving Cercopithecus mitis. Despite these differences, the common morphotype of the humerus and femur in the Cercopithecinae is exhibited in both Cercocebus and Cercopithecus, contrasting with the morphology shown by other primates (Colobinae, Hominoidea and Cebidae). The cercopithecine morphotype is characterized by the restriction of joint movements for economical fore-aft excursions of the limbs. Both the large-bodied cebids and apes exhibit a morphotype that allows greater mobility of the joints involving axial rotations and abduction. The humerus of apes is further characterized by specializations for suspensory positional behaviors. The morphotype of the limb bones of the Colobinae differs from that of the Cercopithecinae in having less restricted joint movements. However, the morphotypes of these two subfamilies show a greater similarity to each other than to those of large-bodied cebids and apes. It is presumed that positional behaviors of ancestral cercopithecids involved parasagittal excursions of the limbs. (Verlagsangabe)

Abstract: The Namurungule Formation yields a large amount of mammals of a formerly unknown and diversified vertebrate assemblage of the late Miocene. The Namurungule Formation has been dated as approximately 7 to 10 Ma. This age agrees with the mammalian assemblage of the Namurungule Formation. Sedimentological evidence of this formation supports that the Namurungule Formation was deposited in lacustrine and/or fluvial environments. Numerous equid and bovid remains were found form the Namurungule Formation. These taxa indicate the open woodland to savanna environments. Assemblage of the Namurungule Fauna indicates a close similarity to those of North Africa, Southwest and Central Europe, and some similarity to Sub-Paratethys, Siwaliks and East Asia faunas. The Namurungule Fauna was the richest among late Miocene (Turolian) Sub-Saharan faunas. From an analysis of Neogene East Africa faunas, it became clear that mammalian faunal assemblage drastically has changed from woodland fauna to openland fauna during Astaracian to Turolian. The Namurungule Fauna is the forerunner of the modern Sub-Saharan (Ethiopian) faunas in savanna and woodland environments. (Verlagsangabe)

Abstract: Harara is a Muslim town in Hararge/East Ethiopia with a population of ca. 50, 000 people, who belong to five different ethnic and language groups: Harari (ca. 20,000), Kottu-Oromo, Argobba, Somali, and Amhara. Only the Amhara are Christians. Harari and Amharinya are Semitic languages, Orominya and Somalinya are Cushitic languages: Agrobbinya is extinct; the Argobba speak mostly Orominya (personal communication. Sidney R. Waldron, 1975). Basketwork is a refined art. That it has to be valued as an art proper is perhaps up to now only recognised by the African art market overseas. It is carried out by the women of the Harari, the élite group within the town. Distinct forms and shapes of baskets and distinct and complicated patterns were developed throughout probably several centuries, although we have material proof of basketmaking only for about a hundred years. The Paulitschke collection of 1884 in the Austrian Ethnographic Museum in Vienna has the earliest Harari basket we have. The intricate patterns show a richness of color combinations for which already in the last century imported chemical dyes were used although natural dyes were known, and informants were still able to give me the recipes how to prepare them. Raw materials were several species of grass and straw, and for dyes minerals and organic substances. The technique demands great skill, since foundation and oversewing coil often have to be composed with materials of several (not only two) contrasting colors. The patterns reflect the cultural history of the town: for instance patterns with the names of "Shield of the Amîr" (indicating that there had been amîrs ruling the city), "Mohammed Ali Gâr" (referring to an unusual and beautiful house, the Pakistani trader Mohammed Ali built at the turn of this century), "Servant of the Needle" (gäbär märfï)--an Amhara term--(referring to the presence and influence for the Amhara conquerors). Other patterns give the name of the inventor of a particular pattern. The greater number of baskets show that the "good side" is the decorative side - that is the outside - and not the functional side, the inside of a plate (With a modern soup bowl the "good" side would be the functional inside). This shows that such baskets had much more a decorative function, namely, wall decoration. Only at rarer occasions such baskets were used for food presents or to serve special types of food to guests, for instance at a wedding. Baskets had to be arranged in a Harari house according to prescribed rules. Mastership in basketmaking and in arranging baskets in a Harari house showed that the artists and housewife knew the skills and rules of this fine art, and she thus indicated that she was a member of the élite group of the Harari. Also, every young woman had to have (and still must have) a basic outfit of baskets for her household when she gets married. The art is still alive. A tourist trade and craft has developed, which is of a simpler make and less fine quality. Here it is most often Kottu women who work for a Harari dealer. (Verlagsangabe)

Abstract: Small towns have often been considered as unimportant and have been largely ignored by policy-makers and researchers. Instead, attention was focussed on the large city or on rural development and agricultural change without consideration of the positive contribution that small towns can make to rural transformation. But for the rural majority of Africa's population it is the small town with which they have the most intense contacts. Case studies are presented from Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Nigeria, Somalia, Sudan, Zambia and Zimbabwe.(Verlagsangabe)
