Abstract:
This study examines attempts to expand agricultural production in Meru District, Kenya. Basing the assessment of change upon a detailed exposition of traditional agriculture, original field work and documentary research demonstrate that following the colonial era of limited agricultural change, the period from 1950 to 1969 was characterized by rapidly accelerating modernization in the agricultural system. The introduction of new food and cash crops, new methods of cultivation, improved breeds of animals, and a new system of land tenure are the principal changes since 1950. Although these might be termed revolutionary, bottlenecks in the flow of food grains, increasing disparity between highland and lowland, and decreasing amount of land per capita all diminish the record of agricultural modernization.
