Abstract: Death and the Idea of Mexico is the first social, cultural, and political history of death in a nation that has made death its tutelary sign. Examining the history of death and of the death sign from the sixteenth-century holocaust to contemporary Mexican American identity politics, anthropologist Claudio Lomnitz`s innovative study marks a turning point in understanding Mexico`s rich and unique use of death imagery. Unlike contemporary Europeans and Americans, whose denial of death permeates their cultures, the Mexican people display and cultivate a jovial familiarity with death. This intimacy with death has become the cornerstone of Mexico`s national identity. It is tempting to view this rich elaboration of death imagery as yet another example of an "invented tradition," that is, a cult shaped by the modern state`s cultural policies or by the narrow interests of contemporary identity politics. Lomnitz takes a different approach. Rather than flattening out the tradition by insisting only on the ways it is willfully manipulated, this book focuses on the dialectical relationship between dying, killing, and the administration of death, and the very formation of the colonial state, of a rich and variegated popular culture, and of the Mexican nation itself. The elevation of Mexican intimacy with death to the center of national identity is but a moment within that history - within a history in which the key institutions of society are built around the claims of the fallen.Based on a wide range of sources - from missionary testimonies to newspaper cartoons, from masterpieces of artistic vanguards to accounts of public executions and political assassinations - Death and the Idea of Mexico moves beyond the limited methodology of traditional historiographies of death to probe the depths of a people and a country whose fearless acquaintance with death shapes the very terms of their social compact. This work effects a novel turn in the classical historiography of death - a turn that can be characterized by a move from social and cultural history to political history. The move toward the politics of death gives readers a unique insight into the peculiar story of death in the Americas.

Abstract: Over a period of twenty-five years, President Robert Mugabe has entrenched himself in power. But in an increasingly democratic world, Mugabe, now in his eighties, stands as an anachronism. The change he has for so long resisted seems inevitable. But what will happen after he goes? The major Western powers have long been critical of Mugabe anbd his policies, but have yet to propose a bluprint for the future. So what will it take to rebuild Zimbabwe? Ths gripping, incisive book discusses many relevant issues and asks serious questions: Will 4 million exiles go home to a country rife with unemployment? Can education and medical standards be restored? Should there be war-crimes trials to punish those who resorted to political violence? Can law and order be re-established and the reputation of the police be reclaimed? Can the economy be revived, and where will the billions of dollars come from to put things right? What happens after Mugabe? is meticulously researched, with material drawn from hundreds of interviews inside Zimbabwe and among exile communities in Britain, the US and South Africa.

Abstract: "Operation Solomon" was one of the most remarkable rescue efforts in modern history, in which more than 14,000 Ethiopian Jews were airlifted to Israel in little more than a day. Now, in this riveting volume, Stephen Spector offers the definitive account of this incredible story, based on over 200 interviews and exclusive access to confidential documents. Written with the pace and immediacy of a novel, here is the dramatic story of the rescue of the dark-skinned Jews of Ethiopia. Spector recounts how 20,000 Jews were willingly lured from their ancestral villages to Addis Ababa, expecting to be taken quickly from there to the Holy Land. Instead, they became pawns in a struggle between the Israeli government and Ethiopia's repressive dictator, who tried to coerce Israel into selling him weapons he needed in a losing war against rebel armies. In the resulting stalemate, the Jewish community was forced to live for nearly a year in squalid hovels, vulnerable to the dangers of the city, including crime and HIV. Worse yet, the imminent collapse of Addis Ababa, with the rebels closing in on the capital, raised the threat of bloody street fighting or even a genocidal attack on the Jews, a small minority in a nation that is primarily Christian and Muslim. Spector describes the tense negotiations among Israelis, Ethiopians, and Americans, which became increasingly urgent as time ran low and the danger mounted. And he highlights the secret deals and sudden setbacks that nearly aborted the mission at the eleventh hour, even as Israeli jets sat on the runway in Ethiopia, waiting to take the Jews to the land for which they had yearned for generations. Recounting the full story for the first time, Operation Solomon is a stirring account of a heroic rescue achieved in the face of daunting odds.

Abstract: Had Mandela been the Palestinian leader, the Middle East conflict would have long been resolved, U.S. policymakers assert. Heribert Adam and Kogila Moodley question such personalized magic in the absence of other South African preconditions for a negotiated settlement. What can be learned from South Africa's negociated revolution for peacemaking in divided societes? Could a Truth Commission serve reconciliation in the Middle East? Abstract: Historically, canonic studies of ritual have discussed and explained ritual organization, action, and transformation primarily as representations of broader cultural and social orders. In the present, as in the past, less attention is given to the power of ritual to organize and effect transformation through its own dynamics. Breaking with convention, the contributors to this volume were asked to discuss ritual first and foremost in relation to itself, in its own right, and only then in relation to its socio-cultural context. The results attest to the variable capacities of rites to effect transformation through themselves, and to the study of phenomena in their own right as a fertile approach to comprehending ritual dynamics.

Abstract: Grant, Stanley und Livingstone - die Erschließung des Schwarzen Kontinents im 19. (Klappentext)

Abstract: The South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was set up to deal with the human rights violations of apartheid during the years 1960-1994. However, as Wilson shows, the TRC's restorative justice approach to healing the nation did not always serve the needs of communities at a local level. Based on extended anthropological fieldwork, this book illustrates the impact of the TRC in urban African communities in Johannesburg. While a religious constituency largely embraced the commission's religious-redemptive language of reconciliation, Wilson argues that the TRC had little effect on popular ideas of justice as retribution. This provocative study deepens our understanding of post-apartheid South Africa and the use of human rights discourse. It ends on a call for more cautious and realistic expectations about what human rights institutions can achieve in democratizing countries.

Abstract: Capitalism was the engine of modern development in the West. The land tenure system in the Middle East, in contrast to the West, was an obstacle to the development of capitalism. In the West, feudalism resulted in a capitalist mode of production, and was driven by private ownership of land. In Iran, these fundamentals were absent. Understanding this, some Western developmentalists, in an attempt to remove this obstacle, rationalized a project of 'modernization' that involved imposing capitalism from the top down. Under this project, developing countries under the influence of the West were advised to launch land reform programs that would modify the traditional, and obsolete, land systems. The first part of this study explores the roots of this issue in Iran. The second part of the book examines the period from 1961, when the land reform program began, to 1981, when Iran saw the beginning of the Islamic system. (Umschlagtext)

Abstract: An account of Britain's final bloody decade in Kenya, this book tells the story of the brutal war between the colonial government and the insurrectionist Mau Mau between 1952 and 1960. New findings cast the Gikuyu rebels--hardly the terrorists they were thought to be--in a new light and reveal the British to be brutal aggressors in a "dirty war" that involved, among others, Winston Churchill and Harold MacMillan. This book portrays a teetering colonial empire in its final phase--employing whatever military and propaganda methods were necessary to preserve an order that could no longer hold.David Anderson's troubling account of British conduct during the Mau Mau rebellion in the 1950s comes at a time when the British government is being brought before the Kenyan courts.

Abstract: What is the price of a limb? A child? Ethnicity? Love? In a world that is often ruled by buyers and sellers, those things that are often considered priceless become objects to be marketed and from which to earn a profit. Ranging from black market babies to exploitative sex trade operations to the marketing of race and culture, Rethinking Commodification presents an interdisciplinary collection of writings, including legal theory, case law, and original essays to reexamine the traditional legal question: "To commodify or not to commodify?" In this pathbreaking course reader, Martha M. Ertman and Joan C. Williams present the legal cases and theories that laid the groundwork for traditional critiques of commodification, which tend to view the process as dehumanizing because it reduces all human interactions to economic transactions. This "canonical" section is followed by a selection of original essays that present alternative views of commodification based on the concept that commodification can have diverse meanings in a variety of social contexts. When viewed in this way, the commodification debate moves beyond whether or not commodification is good or bad, and is assessed instead on the quality of the social relationships and wider context that is involved in the transaction. Rethinking Commodification contains an excellent array of contemporary issues, including intellectual property, reparations for slavery, organ transplants, and sex work; and an equally stellar array of contributors, including Richard Posner, Margaret Jane Radin, Regina Austin, and many others. Review: "A superb collection of classic and contemporary readings on commodification theory, including the latest, most advanced theorizing on this subject. It is a must-read." --Elizabeth Anderson, Philosophy, University of Michigan "As someone who helped to draw attention to the subject of commodification more than two decades ago, I believe that commodification is, if anything, more important today than it has ever been. We must ask ourselves: Are there some things that money can't buy? Who is advantaged and who disadvantaged by desperate market exchanges? This indispensable collection of old and new thoughts on commodification will help us as we struggle towards answering these questions." --Margaret Jane Radin, Stanford Law School "Rethinking Commodification includes several classic texts of commodification theory that familiarize readers with the traditional debate. The work then offers new insights into the issue, with two dozen articles, appellate court opinions, and essays. Taken together, this book comprises an intellecutal mosaic that moves the discussion beyond the early, on-off question of whether or not to commodify." --Metapsychology Online"A magnificent collection. The subject is profound and complex, the text gripping, lively, and thoroughly enjoyable to read." --Sylvia A. Law, NYU Law School" "Commodification is on net a great source for good in the world. But the seminal essays in Rethinking Commodification show that the serious questions about alienability are much more than concerns about hypothetical contracts for babies or self-indenture." --Ian Ayres, author of Insincere Promises

Abstract: This volume provides an up-to-date and detailed tour d'horizon of the exciting diversity of new proposals and mechanisms currently being discussed in order to raise the necessary financial resources to make the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals a reality by 2015. If the MDGs to halve global poverty and significantly improve the conditions of life of the world's poor are to be met on schedule, putting in place the requisite funding is an essential component. The economists in this volume from WIDER, UNDP, and other leading institutions have contributed their analyses as part of the Helsinki Process on Globalisation and Democracy - a high-level multi-stakeholder initiative to develop new approaches to global problem-solving, a global economic agenda and human security. Key resource flows examined include ODA, foreign direct investment, remittances by migrants, commodity export prices, and new ideas to secure sustainable debt relief, including SDRs, debt cancellation, revaluation of IMF gold reserves, debt arbitration, and other proposals. The statistically rich analyses are presented in the context of the complicated trends in global inequality, the incidence of poverty, and the impacts of globalisation. The editors conclude with a thought-provoking set of ideas about the political requirements for effective global economic governance aimed at achieving the MDGs that the world community set itself at the start of the new millennium. The empirical data in this volume and survey of key new ideas for resource mobilisation will be invaluable to all those concerned with global economic governance, including scholars, diplomats, NGO lobbyists, and students studying development economics.

Abstract: Bond without Blood constructs the narrative of the Ethiopian-Caribbean ties with three interwoven themes in mind: pan-African nationalism, repatriation, and cultural cross-fertilization. Central in all this is the evocative role of Ethiopian symbolism, the precursor of modern racial nationalism, in the shaping of a collective pan-black consciousness. The overall unitary thesis that holds this book together is that contemporary Ethiopian-Caribbean relation is deeper than a mere psychological preoccupation. Both societies, despite a great physical distance, continue to impact on each other's awareness through migration, religion, secular culture, as well as through a shared history of anti-colonial activism.Throughout the first half of the 20th century, Ethiopia invoked the image of the promised land. In the same way diasporan Jews looked to Palestine, Zion, as a historic homeland, racial nationalists in the New World sought repatriation to Northeast Africa on cultural, spiritual and political grounds. Although famine and civil war have characterized Ethiopia's recent image abroad, the country continues to be celebrated by Rastafarians as an irreplaceable relic of history. Like the mythical bird Sankofa that never loses sight of its source, Rastafarians find in Ethiopia's mythic image a point of historical reference, a blueprint for future revival, a vision to cherish, an ideal to strive for.Modern West Indian love affair with Ethiopia is, however, much more than a search for an idyllic past. Given the state-of-the-art means of communication, Ethiopia is no longer a far off exotica or a land of romantic abstraction. Modern Ethiopian-Caribbean ties are articulated by tangible historical events. The manifestation of Ethiopian art in Reggae, the Rastafarian deification of Haile Selassie, and the transplantation of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in the English Caribbean, are all examples of Ethiopian cultural crossovers in the New World. Inversely, black American Soul and Jamaican Reggae have spiced Ethiopian urban culture, as have their political heroes and sports icons. In other words, Ethiopians have turned to secular black culture as a mark of cosmopolitan sophistication, while West Indians have turned toward Ethiopia in search of spiritual stimulation.

Abstract: Drawing on anthropological, socio-psychological, religious, and philosophical material, this book engages in a discussion of what it means to be an 'individual' in relation to notions of selfhood, personality, and social role. This theme is explored with reference to the investigations of Louis Dumont into Hindu and other Indian ideologies, and with regard to the dominant threads of Western individualism. Clarifying and at times building upon his analyses, the author follows Dumont in a consideration of Indian ideology (Hindu non-individualism, the 'dividual', social personhood); French ideology (sociopolitical individualism); German ideology (subjective individualism); and Western ideology (the Christian beginnings of individualism, political and economic individualism, the philosophical 'categorisation' of self). While most commentators have tended to focus primarily on one aspect of Dumont's work - either his views on Indian hierarchy or writings on modern individualism - the author reveals considerable continuity throughout Dumont's entire oeuvre based around the notion of 'categories' and the concept of the 'individual'. Dumont's intellectual background is explored with reference to the Durkheimian tradition, with Marcel Mauss being highlighted as the principal architect in his thinking. In particular, Dumont's interest in the 'category of the individual' is shown to be an extension of Mauss's concern with the 'category of the person'. The distinctiveness of Dumont's structuralist approach is thrown into full relief through comparison with that of others acknowledging an intellectual dept to Mauss, namely, Claude Levi-Strauss and Fernand Braudel. The book covers an assessment of general approaches to the study of individualism, with the relevant perspectives of other thinkers discussed and related to Dumont's approach as appropriate.

Abstract: This timely and unique book is an analytical study of post-liberation Eritrea. The work offers an extraordinary account of the events and developments that have taken place in the country`s politics, economy and foreign relations and of the things that have gone wrong since independence. By focusing on the economy, constitutional development or lack thereof, and foreign relations, the book illuminates objectively the internal and external difficulties and constraints the country faced in building a democratic society, viable economy, and sustainable foreign policy after liberation. Mengisteab and Yohannes insightfully demonstrate the structural and historical conditions and leadership patterns that account for the striking similarities between post-colonial Eritrea and post-colonial African states. The book makes an enormous contribution not only to the study of contemporary Eritrea but also to the comparative study of African politics and government. Since there is no work to date that treats the economy, politics and diplomacy of Eritrea from a comparative perspective, this timely book will go a long way in closing the gap in our understanding of post-liberation Eritrea, and the post-colonial African state as well.

Abstract: How can we hold in the same view both cultural or historical constructs and generalities about social existence? Kinship, Law and the Unexpected takes up an issue at the heart of studies of society - the way we use relationships to uncover relationships. Relationality is a phenomenon at once contingent (on certain ways of knowing) and ubiquitous (to social life). The role of relations in western (Euro-American) knowledge practices, from the scientific revolution onwards, raises a question about the extent to which Euro-American kinship is the kinship of a knowledge-based society. The argument takes the reader through current issues in biotechnology, new family formations and legal interventions, and intellectual property debates, to matters of personhood and ownership afforded by material from Melanesia and elsewhere. If we are often surprised by what our relatives do, we may also be surprised by what relations tells us about the world we live in.

Abstract: When scholars write the history of the world twenty years from now, and they come to the chapter Y2K to March 2004 , what will they say was the most crucial development? The attacks on the World Trade Center on 9/11 and the Iraq war? Or the convergence of technology and events that allowed India, China, and so many other countries to become part of the global supply chain for services and manufacturing, creating an explosion of wealth in the middle classes of the world's two biggest nations, giving them a huge new stake in the success of globalisation? And with this flattening' of the globe, which requires us to run faster in order to stay in one place, has the world got too small and too fast for human beings and their political systems to adjust in a stable manner? In this brilliant new book, the award-winning New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman demystifies the brave new world for readers, allowing them to make sense of the often bewildering global scene unfolding before their eyes. With his inimitable ability to translate complex foreign policy and economic issues, Friedman explains how the flattening of the world happened at the dawn of the 21st century; what it means to countries, companies, communities and individuals; and how governments and societies can, and must, adapt.

Abstract: Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, a number of linkages have been established between newly independent Central Asian states, or populations within them, and diaspora ethnic groups. This book explores the roles that diaspora communities play in the recent and ongoing emergence of national identities in Central Asia and the Caucasus. The loyalties of these communities are divided between their countries of residence and those states that serve as homeland of their particular ethno-cultural nation, and are further complicated by connections with contested transnational notions of common cultures and 'peoples'. Written by highly respected experts in the field, the book addresses issues such as nationalism, conflict, population movement, global civil society, Muslim communities in China and relations between the new nation-states and Russia. This innovative book will interest students and researchers of transnationalism and Central Asian studies.
Note: Literaturangaben; The book covers the proceedings of the academic conference "Currents, Cross-Currents and Conflict: Transnationalism and Diaspora in the Caucasus Central Asia", held at the University of California, Berkeley in the Spring of 2002 [16-17 March]

Abstract: Newly available in paperback, this brilliantly argued and elegantly written book examines the intricate web of belief, myth and society in the Neolithic period, continuing the story begun in the bestselling and critically acclaimed book "The Mind in the Cave". Drawing on the latest research, the authors skilfully link material on human consciousness, imagery and religious concepts to propose provocative new theories about the causes of an ancient revolution in cosmology, the origins of social complexity and even the drive behind the domestication of plants and animals.

Abstract: Language contact between Russian and Kyrgyz speakers in the Kyrgyz Soviet Socialist Republic and in present day Kyrgyzstan has historically been a source of conflict. With independence, the young state began its search for a new identity in which language played a crucial role. Communicative and symbolic necessities therefore had to be considered in the formulation of an adequate language policy. This book describes the sociolinguistic processes in independent Kyrgyzstan from an ethno-linguistic perspective and gives an overview of language policy in both the Soviet Union and independent Kyrgyzstan. Drawing on 25 in-depth interviews and observations conducted during two years of fieldwork in Kyrgyzstan, the author explains why, in contrast to the status of titular languages in other former Soviet republics, the Kyrgyz language in Kyrgyzstan is still dominated by Russian after more than a decade of independence

Description / Table of Contents: The three major neighbouring states of the Arabian Peninsula - Saudi Arabia, Oman and Yemen - make for strange bedfellows. They are governed by three very different systems with very different results, calling into question how their internal policies affect regional relations and vice versa. Saudi Arabia is a monarchy, a prosperous, religious and restrictive state generally considered secure but facing problems of increasing social unrest. Oman is a small, thriving, stable sultanate, modernised and moderate but tightly controlled; and the republic of Yemen, which has the region's poorest economy, has still not shrugged off the legacy of its turbulent modern history. Each state adheres to a different Islamic sect, moreover, and though their populations are overwhelmingly Arab, differing tribal structures result in widely variant effects on the political process in their respective systems. Each state has also had extensive historical relationships with the Ottoman and British empires, the US and Russia, and these too have coloured regional relations. Recent events like the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 and the American-led invasion of Iraq have also influenced these states' internal policy decisions, further affecting their dealings with one another and at with the world at large. Manea examines each country in detail, from state formation to current affairs and from local to international government.

Abstract: The war that broke out between Eritrea and Ethiopia in May 1998 came like a bolt from the blue, as border skirmishes escalated into all out war. The two countries, which had been allies until that point, were pitched into a brutal conflict. Intense political mediation by the international community, including personal interventions by President Clinton and Kofi Annan, were unable to halt the fighting. Finally, after two and a half years, and following serious reversals for the Eritreans, a peace agreement was finally signed. A United Nations force was deployed to the region to hold the line, while the border was being demarcated by an international tribunal in the Hague. The demarcation has now been made, and both countries are attempting to come to terms with its consequences. Certainly the political consequences of the conflict have been immense for the entire region. The ruling parties in both Addis Ababa and Asmara have, for the first time since their founding, been split from top to bottom, and their leaderships have had to contend with the most serious challenges they have ever had to face. The regional repercussions of the war are still playing themselves out and the economies of both Ethiopian and Eritrea have been severely effected. The aim of the book is to bring together a set of readings that will take students of the region through the recent events in a coherent fashion. It will combine original documents with commentaries on the events, as well as providing details of other sources of information.

Abstract: Colonialism and its legacies have emerged as one of the most important research topics in anthropology. Indeed, we now understand that colonialism gave rise to and shaped the discipline. However, the understanding of colonization in anthropology, history, and other fields derives largely from studies of European expansion. In this volume, ten archaeologists analyze the assumptions that have constrained previous studies of colonialism and demonstrate that colonization was common in early Old and New World state societies—an important strategy by which people gained access to critical resources. Abstract: This handbook is designed to help researchers, journalists, students, and business people to locate the rich array of Washington institutions and organizations that focus on issues pertaining to Central Asia and the Caucasus region, particularly in the post-Soviet period. Washington's status as a major repository of documentation on every aspect of the region is strong and growing daily. Beyond the Library of Congress, which intensively collects newspapers and other published materials from the region, and the Foreign Broadcast Information Service, which does the same for radio, there are hundreds of national and international public, non-profit, and private organizations and institutions in Washington with extensive links to Central Asia and the Caucasus, all of which maintain active archives and collections. The Guide includes more than 270 entries. It describes the structure and scholarly and technical resources of libraries, archives and manuscript repositories, museums and galleries, collections of sound and visual recordings, map and film collections, and the holdings of research centers and information agencies. Academic programs and departments of the metropolitan area's many institutions of higher learning are covered, along with international organizations, U.S. and foreign government agencies, association and advocacy groups, scientific organizations, educational and cultural organizations, corporations, technical assistance organizations, religious organizations, publications and media operations, bookstores and online resources. An index of organizations and institutions enhances the Guide's usefulness.
