    Abstract: Am 28. und 29. Oktober 2016 trafen sich auf dem Tübinger Schloss Vertreterinnen und Vertreter der Ur- und Frühgeschichtlichen Archäologie, Archäobotanik, Klassischen Archäologie, Physischen Geographie/Bodenkunde, Humangeographie, Ethnologie und Geschichtswissenschaft, um in einen interdisziplinären Dialog über "Gunst/Ungunst - Nutzung und Wahrnehmung von (Marginal-)Räumen" zu treten. Gemeinsam wurden ältere Forschungskonzepte kritisch hinterfragt und neue Ansätze zur Erforschung der soziokulturellen Wahrnehmung von Räumen und Ressourcen diskutiert. Hierbei wurde festgestellt, dass Untersuchungen zu Gunst und Ungunst bis vor Kurzem von naturdeterministischen Konzeptionen dominiert wurden, in denen zum Teil nationalistische und kolonialistische Eroberungsnarrative aus dem 19. Jahrhundert nachwirken. Von herausragender Bedeutung für die Kehrtwende hin zu einer differenzierten Auseinandersetzung sowie zu einer Weiterentwicklung veralteter possibilistischer Konzepte sind deshalb nicht nur kritische Reflexionen zur wechselseitigen Beeinflussung von Forschung und Zeitgeist, sondern auch fachübergreifende Initiativen, in denen gemeinsam alte Paradigmen hinterfragt und neue Wege beschritten werden.     Abstract: Sowohl Individuen als auch soziale Gruppen defi nieren sich über ein Gefl echt ganz unterschiedlicher Zugehörigkeiten, die je nach Situation bewusst betont oder angepasst werden. Diese Vielschichtigkeit von Identitätsgefl echten und die Nutzung von Identität als soziale Ressource erschweren das Verständnis von Zugehörigkeiten antiker Akteure. Dies führte gerade bei Versuchen, Befunde und Individuen mit kollektiven Identitäten wie Ethnien zu verbinden, zu Widersprüchen, Vereinfachungen und Fehlzuordnungen. Die daraus entstandenen mistaken identities wiederum hatten und haben mitunter weitreichende Konsequenzen für Interpretationen von archäologischem Fundmaterial. Der vorliegende Band diskutiert diese Schwierigkeiten einerseits auf theoretischer und wissenschaftsgeschichtlicher Ebene und legt andererseits konkrete Beispiele spezifi scher materieller Kontexte vor, die die Probleme und Grenzen im Umgang mit der Verknüpfung von Objekten und ethnischen oder kulturellen, politischen und religiösen Identitäten aufzeigen. Nicht zuletzt werden auch mistaken identities in Form von Fehlzuordnungen an der Materialbasis thematisiert und das Potential naturwissenschaftlicher Analysenmethoden im Zusammenhang mit Identitätsdiskursen in archäologischen Kontexten zur Diskussion gestellt. Die hier gesammelten Beiträge entstanden im Anschluss an die internationale Konferenz "Mistaken Identity", die vom 17.-19. November 2016 am Institut für Klassische Archäologie der Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen abgehalten wurde.

    Abstract: Vigilanz wird alltäglich ausgeübt, etwa im Bereich der Sicherheit, des Rechts, der Religionen oder auch der Öffentlichen Gesundheit: überall dort, wo wir auf etwas achten, gegebenenfalls auch etwas tun oder melden sollen. Der Münchner SFB 1369, in dem dieser Band entstanden ist, untersucht die Geschichte, kulturellen Varianten und aktuellen Formen dieses Phänomens nichtinstitutioneller, aber doch hochgradig funktionaler Wachsamkeit.Der erste Band der Publikationsreihe `Vigilanzkulturen` widmet sich der zeitlichen Dimension von Vigilanz. So wie menschliche Aufmerksamkeit erheblichen Schwankungen unterliegt, ist auch Wachsamkeit zeitlich instabil. Die hohe physiologisch-kognitive Intensität von Wachsamkeit lässt sich nur schwer auf Dauer stellen. Wird über längere Zeit hinweg ein ereignisloses oder unstrukturiertes Geschehen beobachtet, sinkt die Aufmerksamkeit oder richtet sich auf anderes. Kulturelle Anleitungen zur Wachsamkeit arbeiten daher in der Regel selbst mit zeitlichen Strukturen: mit Rhythmisierungen, Habitualisierungen oder Dramatisierungen. Sie geben vor, in welcher Abfolge Wachsamkeit herauf- oder herabgestuft werden soll oder sie variieren denkbare Gefahren. Sie arbeiten mit natürlichen Zeitverläufen (wie Tag und Nacht, Licht und Dunkelheit), die sie, kulturell überformt, nutzbar machen. Darüber hinaus können auch Techniken und Medien helfen, Wachsamkeit zu verstetigen. Der Band untersucht diese zeitliche Gestaltung der Wachsamkeit anhand historisch spezifischer Konstellationen. Er versammelt Beiträge aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen wie Geschichte, Ethnographie, Kunstgeschichte, Literatur- und Medienwissenschaft, um die Zeiten der Wachsamkeit zu erforschen.

    Abstract: Seit der Revolution 2010/2011, dem Sturz des Diktators Ben ?Ali und dem Ende der Einparteien-Herrschaft im Jahr 2011 sowie der Verabschiedung einer neuen demokratischen Verfassung im Jahr 2014 gilt Tunesien in der arabischen Welt als Ausnahmeland, als das einzige Land der Region, in welchem eine Zivilgesellschaft den Sieg über ein autokratisches System davontragen und behaupten konnte. Der vorliegende Band beschäftigt sich nicht nur mit der historischen Entwicklung Tunesiens seit dem Beginn tunesischer Reformen in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts, sondern analysiert auch, wie sich im Kontext einer langen Reformtradition in der Kolonialzeit und seit der Unabhängigkeit die Herausbildung der tunesischen Zivilgesellschaft erklärt. Ein besonderes Augenmerk liegt dabei zum einen auf der Revolution des Jahres 2010/2011 und der Entwicklung eines demokratischen Tunesiens nach der Revolution.     Abstract: Nahona`ara—means `facing the `ara`, the place where the southeast winds meet the land just west of Point Cruz. Nahona`ara became Honiara, the capital city of Solomon Islands with a population of 160,000, the only significant urban centre in a nation of 721,000 people.Honiara: Village-City of Solomon Islands views Honiara in several ways: first as Tandai traditional land; then as coconut plantations between the 1880s and 1930s; within the British protectorate (1893-1978) and its Guadalcanal District; in the 1942-45 war years, which created the first urban settlement; in the directly post-war period until 1952 as the new capital of the protectorate, replacing Tulagi; and then as the headquarters of the Western Pacific High Commission (WPHC) between 1953 and 1974. Finally, in 1978, Honiara became the capital of the independent nation of Solomon Islands and the headquarters of Guadalcanal Province.The book argues that over decades there have been four and sometimes five changing and intersecting Honiara `worlds` operating at one time, each of different social, economic and political significance. The importance of each group - British, Solomon Islanders, other Pacific Islanders, Asians, and more recently the 2003-17 presence of the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI) - has changed over time.     Abstract: Der vorliegende Band richtet den Blick auf Individualisierungsprozesse in Ägypten, Iran, Libanon, Senegal und Tunesien als einen zentralen Aspekt aktueller gesellschaftlicher Dynamiken. Ausgangspunkt bildet die Frage, wie gesellschaftliche Transformationen das Feld des Religiösen beeinflussen und wie Prozesse religiösen Wandels gesellschaftliche Veränderungen anstoßen können. Die Beiträge in diesem Sammelband fokussieren auf die Lebensrealitäten von Frauen urbaner Mittelschichtsmilieus und zeigen auf, wie Bestrebungen zur individuellen Gestaltung des eigenen Lebens etablierten sozialen und religiösen Normen in unterschiedlichen Bereichen des Alltagslebens zuwiderlaufen, diese aber auch verändern können. Insbesondere ist das Augenmerk darauf gerichtet, wie sich diese Prozesse in Geschlechterbeziehungen und zwischen unterschiedlichen Generationen manifestieren. Dabei werden milieuspezifische Dynamiken analysiert. Diese sind vor allem der Einfluss westlicher Modernitätsideale, globalisierte Diskurse und Praktiken in der Freizeitgestaltung, im Bereich von Mode sowie anderen Ausdrucksformen individualisierter Lebensstile und werden im vorliegenden Band in spezifischen religiös und nicht-religiös konnotierten sozialen Zusammenhängen erörtert.     Abstract: Ivan Stepanovich Sopochin lived his whole life following the traditional customs of his people, one of the branches of the Eastern Khanty, on a tributary of the Ob', the Woki-rap-yagun (`Fox-cliff river`), near Surgut. He remained a monolingual speaker of his dialect, and was a guardian of spiritual traditions. In his youth he was arrested for the practice of shamanism - though he called himself not a shaman, but a `man who sees`, who has visions. In the last years of his life (he died in 1993), he attracted many visits from researchers into shamanism and traditional culture. The present volume presents the research of some of the scholars who carried out field work or have studied Sopochin`s spiritual traditions, and marks a significant contribution to English-language research into Eastern Khanty shamanism and traditional culture.

    Abstract: The Aral Sea is well known for its devastating regression over the second half of the twentieth century, and for its recent partial restoration. Environment and Post-Soviet Transformation in Kazakhstan`s Aral Sea Region is the first book to explore what these monumental changes have meant to those living on the sea`s shores.Following the fluctuating fortunes of the pre-Soviet, Soviet and post-Soviet fisheries, the book shows how the vast environmental changes the region has undergone cannot be disentangled from the transformations of Soviet socialism and postsocialism. This ethnographic perspective prompts a critical rethinking of the category of environmental disaster through which the region is predominantly known. Tracing how the sea`s retreat and partial return have been apprehended by diverse local actors in the former port of Aral`sk and surrounding fishing villages, as well as by scientists, bureaucrats and international development workers, William Wheeler draws out the multiple meanings environmental change acquires within different contexts. This study of how people make their lives amidst overlapping ecological and political-economic upheavals is rich in ethnographic detail that is both rooted in Soviet legacies and alive to the new transnational connections that are reshaping the region.Offering a rigorous political ecology of Soviet socialism and after, the book is a major contribution to the nascent environmental anthropology of Central Asia. It will be of interest to environmental anthropologists, environmental historians, and scholars of all disciplines working on Central Asia and the former USSR.

    Abstract: The current volume of Scripta Instituti Donneriani Aboensis is based on a symposium `Approaching Esotericism and Mysticism: Cultural Influences` arranged in June 2019 by the Donner Institute together with the research project `Seekers of the New: Esotericism and the transformation of religiosity in the modernising Finland` (University of Turku). The aim is to analyse the diverse influences of esoteric ideas and practices and the various forms of mysticism in their cultural-historical surroundings.     Abstract: With so much of the global population living on the move, away from their homelands, and in diasporic communities, death and mourning practices are inevitably impacted. Transnational Death brings together eleven cutting-edge articles from the emerging field of transnational death studies. By highlighting European, Asian, North American, and Middle Eastern perspectives, the collection provides timely and fresh analysis and reflection on people's changing experiences with death in the context of migration over time. First beginning with a thematic assessment of the field of transnational death studies, readers then have the opportunity to delve into case studies that examine experiences with death and mourning at a distance from the viewpoints of Family, Community, and Commemoration. The chapters highlight complicated issues confronting migrants, their families, and communities, including: negotiations of burial preferences and challenges of corpse repatriation; the financial costs of providing end-of-life care, travel at times of death, and arranging culturally appropriate funerals and religious services; as well as the emotional and sociocultural weight of mourning and commemoration from afar. Overall, Transnational Death provides new insights on identity and belonging, community reciprocity, transnational communication, and spaces of mourning and commemoration. (Abstract)

    Abstract: This Current African Issues discusses the displacement and resettlement of the Sudanese Nubians into the New Halfa agricultural scheme in Eastern Sudan, the current state of this multi-ethnic community and the challenges the farmers are facing. The Nubians of Wadi Halfa in Northern Sudan (also called the Halfawi Nubians) had to be relocated to New Halfa due to the construction of the Aswan High Dam in the early 1960s. In addition to the loss of ancestral land and the alienation they experienced, the Halfawi Nubians struggled to secure a sufficient livelihood in New Halfa and found their lives irreversibly altered. Although the resettlement of the Nubians did not succeed in rooting them in their new territory and a lot of the Halfawi Nubians have since abandoned the scheme, New Halfa has also created unforeseen opportunities for internally displaced people and migrant workers and become a growing regional centre for business and commerce. Despite the fact that New Halfa failed to meet its original targets, it is an example of a resettlement scheme that, in 50 years, developed and adjusted according to the needs of its current inhabitants.     Abstract: Urbanisation and long-lasting civil wars and conflict mean that the demographic pattern in Sudan is changing drastically. Nevertheless, 60%-80 % of Sudanese engage in subsistence agriculture. Agriculture remains a crucial sector in the economy as a major source of rawmaterials, food and foreign exchange. It employs the majority of the labour force, and serves as a potential vehicle for diversifyingthe economy. However, no rigorous studies have explained productivity in this sector inrelation to food security. The situation has worsened because agriculture in particular has been neglected sincethe advent of oil production in the early 2000s. Moreover, Sudan's agricultural growth has been unbalanced, with the majority of irrigated agriculture concentrated in the Centre and ahuge disparity in development indicators between the best- and worst-performing regions. Thus, studies show that the vast majority of Sudanese are reported to be food insecure, especially internally displaced persons and in conflict regions such as Darfur, Kordofan and other regions.     Abstract: As Uganda comes closer to full scale commercial production of its recently discovered oil resources, the state has much work to protect its economy from possible negative effects. Although much of the literature regarding oil globally, as well as in Uganda, paints a rather pessimistic picture, Dr. Pamela Mbabazi provides a set of alternatives, looking at oil as an opportunity rather than a curse. While oil is still in its infancy, many in Uganda have already predicted how it will play out over the next 50 years. While some are quick to point out the flaws and potential problem areas, Dr. Mbabazi suggests a more balanced approach, recognizing both the issue areas as well as the opportunities presented. Uganda has just celebrated its 50th anniversary as an independent nation. What is certain is that over the next five decades, oil will play a significant role in Uganda´s development. Thus, she argues that by heeding the suggestions made in this contribution, the government and key decision makers can help set Uganda on the right path to becoming Africa's first oil success story. Dr. Pamela Mbabazi held the Claude Ake Memorial Chair in 2012-2013, working with the Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University and the Nordic Africa Institute.     Abstract: This book is a collection of ethnographies of transnational migration and border crossings in Asia. Interdisciplinary in scope, it addresses issues of mobility and Diaspora from various vantage points.     Abstract: In the Sepik Basin of Papua New Guinea, ritual culture was dominated by the Tambaran —a male tutelary spirit that acted as a social and intellectual guardian or patron to those under its aegis as they made their way through life. To Melanesian scholarship, the cultural and psychological anthropologist, Donald F. Tuzin, was something of a Tambaran, a figure whose brilliant and fine-grained ethnographic project in the Arapesh village of Ilahita was immensely influential within and beyond New Guinea anthropology. Tuzin died in 2007, at the age of 61. In his memory, the editors of this collection commissioned a set of original and thought provoking essays from eminent and accomplished anthropologists who knew and were influenced by his work. They are echoes of the Tambaran.The anthology begins with a biographical sketch of Tuzin`s life and scholarship. It is divided into four sections, each of which focuses loosely around one of his preoccupations. The first concerns warfare history, the male cult and changing masculinity, all in Melanesia. The second addresses the relationship between actor and structure. Here, the ethnographic focus momentarily shifts to the Caribbean before turning back to Papua New Guinea in essays that examine uncanny phenomena, narratives about childhood and messianic promises. The third part goes on to offer comparative and psychoanalytic perspectives on the subject in Fiji, Bali, the Amazon as well as Melanesia. Appropriately, the last section concludes with essays on Tuzin`s fieldwork style and his distinctive authorial voice. (Verlagsangaben)

    Note: Kurzfassung/Abstract: In the light of global environmental change, aridity in the South of Morocco is expected to increase while water availability is projected to decrease. Human activities, especially irrigation agriculture, are further impacting on resource degradation. Though the government has attempted to respond to these challenges, the rural South remains poorly developed. Water institutions are created on national and regional level to improve drinking water supply in rural settlements, but seem unable to respond to the most pressing problems. The access to safe drinking water is not guaranteed and water management is ineffective. Katharina Graf, supervised by Professor Dr. Bernd Diekkrüger (Department of Geography, University of Bonn) and Professor Dr. Martin Rössler (Department of Ethnology, University of Cologne), studies the drinking water supply in rural southern Morocco and explores the local options for action against a background of institutional constraints and increasing water scarcity. In 1995 a new water policy was adopted to improve the access to safe drinking water in rural Morocco. Since then, household water management has been based on two water facilities: a conventional draw well and a domestic tap connection. Assuming a scenario of increased water usage, Katharina Graf compares two villages located in the arid Middle Drâa Valley to assess to what extent rural water withdrawal and management are influenced by the above mentioned global, national and regional trends. She looks at these factors and their inter-linkages through an actor-oriented approach to investigate the options local actors have in managing the scarce resource. Drawing on both New Institutionalism and the Natural Resource Management approach, she analyses rural patterns of drinking water management. The analysis suggests that water management is dysfunctional due to the prefabrication of water institutions outside of the village context, while the rising withdrawal is determined by a local adaptation to it. The latter process draws on existing informal institutions which fill the gaps left by formal ones, and together these institutions constitute a flexible but fragile water management solution. The options for local action subject to these constraints appear reduced and leave doubts on the ability of rural households to flexibly manage an ever scarcer water availability. Michael J.     Abstract: Across almost all standard indicators, the Indigenous population of Australia has worse outcomes than the non-Indigenous population. Despite the abundance of statistics and a plethora of government reports on Indigenous outcomes, there is very little information on how Indigenous disadvantage accumulates or is mitigated through time at the individual level. The research that is available highlights two key findings. Firstly, that Indigenous disadvantage starts from a very early age and widens over time. Secondly, that the timing of key life events including education attendance, marriage, childbirth and retirement occur on average at different ages for the Indigenous compared to the non-Indigenous population. To target policy interventions that will contribute to meeting the Council of Australian Governments` (COAG) Closing the Gap targets, it is important to understand and acknowledge the differences between the Indigenous and non-Indigenous lifecourse in Australia, as well as the factors that lead to variation within the Indigenous population.

    Abstract: When comparing the speed and extent of economic development in different geographic regions of the world over the past 20 years, the under-average performance of Arab coun tries in general and Arab Mediterranean countries in particular is striking. This is despite an overall favorable geo-strategic situation at the crossroads of three continents, with ex cellent connections to sea and waterways and in direct proximity to the European Union, one of the world`s economic hubs. It is also despite the minor importance of negative fac tors such as a high-burden diseases or high levels of ethnic fractionalization. In this paper, I focus on identifying the most important constraints on Arab Mediterranean economic development. I use state-of-the-art econometric tools to quantify constraints that have been identified through economic theory and studies of the political economy charac teristics of the region. The empirical results offer support for the central hypothesis that limited technological capacities and political economy structures are the primary con straints on economic development. With a view to international structural adjustment ef forts, my findings imply that the limited success of the Euro-Mediterranean policy to stimulate the economic development of the Arab Mediterranean countries might be be cause structural adjustment efforts do not tackle - or at least do not sufficiently tackle - these constraints.     Abstract: As a world religion Islam is based on a highly abstract and absolute notion of the transcendent, which its followers establish and celebrate - in a seemingly contradictory fashion - at very specific sites: Mecca, Medina, Jerusalem, and the vast and complex landscapes of mosques and Muslim saints' shrines around the world. Sacred locality has thus become a paradigm for the relationship between the human and the transcendent, a model for urban planning, regional networks, imaginary spaces, and spiritual hierarchies alike. This importance of saintly places has, however, become increasingly complicated and troubled by reformist currents within Islam, on the one hand, and the emergence of modern archeology and anthropology, on the other. While they have often tended to posit 'the local' in opposition to 'the universal', in this volume islamologists, anthropologists, and sociologists offer new ways of thinking about the local, the place, and the conceptual landscapes and spaces of saints. In this, its eighth volume, the Yearbook for the Sociology of Islam looks at different sites and regions around the Muslim world (notably Burkina Faso, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Southeast Asia) not as 'localized' versions of a universal Islam, but as constitutive of one particular outlook of the universalizing order of a world religion.

    Abstract: The effect of `locking-in` economic reform and enhancing its credibility is generally re-garded as one of the most important potential effects of regional integration. Based on a detailed review of the theoretical debate, this paper develops a general framework for as-sessment to evaluate the ability of RIAs to serve as effective mechanisms for `commit-ment` and `signalling`. In the second part, this assessment framework is applied to the case of the Syrian-European Association Agreement (AA). Syria initialled an AA with the European Union in October 2004, but two and a half years later, this agreement is still pending formal signature. The empirical findings of this study show that despite several shortcomings, the Syrian-European AA, if it were to come into force, should be able to deliver an appropriate mechanism for signalling and commitment and thus to improve the credibility of the Syrian process of reform at home and abroad. A major loophole of the agreement, however, is represented by its lack of incentives to increase the `rewards for good policy`.

    Abstract: The modern enterprise of anthropology, with all of its important implications for cross-cultural perceptions, perspectives, and self-consciousness emerged from the eighteenth-century intellectual context of the Enlightenment. If the Renaissance discovered perspective in art, it was the Enlightenment that articulated and explored the problem of perspective in viewing history, culture, and society. If the Renaissance was the age of oceanic discovery—most dramatically the discovery of the New World of America—the critical reflections of the Enlightenment brought about an intellectual rediscovery of the New World and thus laid the foundations for modern anthropology. The contributions that constitute this book present the multiple anthropological facets of the Enlightenment, and suggest that the character of its intellectual engagements—acknowledging global diversity, interpreting human societies, and bridging cultural difference—must be understood as a whole to be fundamentally anthropological.     Abstract: Local producers, in their interaction with local processors or exporters and international retailers have the possibility to acquire new skills and knowledge. The type of trust relationship and coordination pattern can determine how information flows and how firms upgrade. In addition, the implementation and compliance with standards provides opportunities for learning and acquiring skills and knowledge. Focusing on this kind of interactions, the study explains how local producers in Honduras engage in upgrading and whether this had an impact on the sales of those firms. The majority of the producers in the sample upgraded their products and internal processes. A limited number of producers engaged in functional upgrading. Most of the producers were aware of the important role of standards. They affirmed that in the process of implementing and complying with standards, they have gained new knowledge and were convinced that they succeeded in securing at better position in the value chain.     Abstract: This article challenges claims that liberalising state regulated markets in developing countries may induce lasting economic development. The analysis of the rise of tourism in Egypt during the last three decades suggests that the effects of liberalisation and structural adjustment are constrained by the neo-patrimonial character of the Egyptian political system. Since the decline of oil rent revenues during the 1980s tourism development was the optimal strategy to compensate for the resulting fiscal losses. Increasing tourism revenues have helped in coping with macroeconomic imbalances and in avoiding more costly adjustment of traditional economic sectors. Additionally, they provided the private elite with opportunities to generate large profits. Therefore, sectoral transformations due to economic liberalisation in neo-patrimonial Rentier states should be described as a process, which has led to the diversification of external rent revenues, rather than to a general downsizing of the Rentier character of the economy.

    Abstract: The globalized Western culture of innovation, as propagated by major aid institutions, does not necessarily lead to empowerment or improvement of the well-being of the stakeholders. On the contrary, it often blocks viable indigenous innovation cultures. In African societies and African Diasporas in Latin America, cultures of innovation largely accrue from the informal, not the formal sector. Crucial for their proper understanding is a threefold structural differentiation: between the formal and informal sector, within the informal sector, according to class, gender or religion, and between different transnational social spaces. Different innovation cultures may be complementary, mutually reinforcing, or conflicting, leading in extreme cases even to a `clash of cultures` at the local level. The repercussions of competing, even antagonistic agencies of innovative strategic groups are demonstrated, analyzing the case of the African poor in Benin and the African Diasporas of Brazil and Haiti.     Abstract: The articles included in this Yearbook of the Sociology of Islam are focused on two perspectives: Some link the comparative analysis of Islam to ongoing debates on the Axial Age and its role in the formation of major civilizational complexes, while others are more concerned with the historical constellations and sources involved in the formation of Islam as a religion and a civilization. More than any other particular line of inquiry, new historical and sociological approaches to the Axial Age revived the idea of comparative civilizational analysis and channeled it into more specific projects. A closer look at the very problematic place of Islam in this context will help to clarify questions about the Axial version of civilizational theory as well as issues in Islamic studies and sociological approaches to modern Islam.     Abstract: Les travaux présentés ici sont le fruit d'une démarche commune de recherche, sous la direction de Nora Lafi, consacrée à l'analyse des réformes urbaines en Méditerranée au XIXe siècle. Le point central en est une relecture des réformes ottomanes à la lumière d'une relativisation des modèles européens. Le choix est le suivant: plutôt que l'usage d'un modèle culturel implicite, autant une comparaison raisonnée. Le but n'est donc pas la théorisation d'un caractère méditerranéen de l'évolution urbaine, mais bien l'application d'une démarche comparative. Pour Tunis, Damas, Jérusalem et Beyrouth, il est montré que les modalités de gouvernement urbain d'ancien régime ont eu une grande importance dans l'application des réformes impériales, et que la modernité, selon les contextes, n'a pas été promue partout ni de la même manière ni avec les mêmes résultats. Apparaissent également les facteurs précoces ayant mené aux impasses de la modernité, qui permettent de relativiser les jugements sur ces phénomènes souvent fondés sur une lecture culturaliste.     Abstract: Cultural Studies haben sich nach ihren Anfängen in Birmingham zu einem transnationalen und transdisziplinären Projekt entwickelt. Auch im deutschsprachigen Raum fand eine breite Rezeption statt. Wissenschaftler aus verschiedenen Disziplinen ließen und lassen sich von Cultural Studies inspirieren und bedienen sich aus deren theoretischer und methodologischer »Werkzeugkiste«, um diese Anstöße produktiv umzusetzen. Dieser Band dokumentiert sowohl den Einfluss der Cultural Studies als auch ihre engagierte Fortführung im deutschsprachigen Raum. Dabei wird deutlich, welche Bereicherung sie für die hiesigen Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften darstellen. Zugleich zeigt sich die Anschlussfähigkeit der Cultural Studies in Deutschland und Österreich an die internationale Diskussion.

    Abstract: During its first six years (1986-1991), the journal Cultural Anthropology provided a unique forum for registering the lively traffic between anthropology and the emergent arena of cultural studies. The nineteen essays collected in Rereading Cultural Anthropology, all of which originally appeared in the journal, capture the range of approaches, internal critiques, and new questions that have characterized the study of anthropology in the 1980s, and which set the agenda for the present. Drawing together work by both younger and well-established scholars, this volume reveals various influences in the remaking of traditions of ethnographic work in anthropology; feminist studies, poststructuralism, cultural critiques, and disciplinary challenges to established boundaries between the social sciences and humanities. Moving from critiques of anthropological representation and practices to modes of political awareness and experiments in writing, this collection offers systematic access to what is now understood to be a fundamental shift (still ongoing) in anthropology toward engagement with the broader interdisciplinary stream of cultural studies.     Abstract: Im Zuge der weltweit steigenden Attraktivität des Islam zeichnet sich ab, daß Globalisierungs- wie Lokalisierungsprozesse zu einer Diversifizierung und Modernisierung des Islam führen. Darüber hinaus ist zu beobachten, daß unter Bezug auf den Islam sozialer Wandel initiiert wird. An diesen Prozessen sind Frauen zentral beteiligt, und zwar nicht nur als Symbole, sondern als Akteurinnen, die die islamische Praxis und Moral gezielt in ihren Alltag einbinden. Das Buch zeigt verschiedene Facetten dieser weiblichen Involvierung auf, wie sie gegenwärtig in Asien, Afrika und Europa in unterschiedlichen Lebenszusammenhängen zu finden sind.
