Abstract:
This book asks the question whether or not differences exist between religions which are relatively highty organized and those which are community-bound. In particular the authors are concerned with how the day-to-day experience of being a Christian, Muslim or Buddhist may differ from that of practitioners of less universal religions, without an organization of specialists. Is the personal experience of religion different if the adherent is part of a formal organization where the initiated control the activities and even beliefs of the non-specialist?The themes covered in this wide-ranging study of control and autonomy in religious experience include Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Temple Hinduism, Judaism, Zulu-Zionism, Spirit mediums and Dinka religion. Some essays discuss the issue of how language, the discourse of experts or the vernacular of the local community, can shape religious practice and experience. Others examine the important role of belief in some religions; the tolerance of deviation and even atheism in others; the urge to convert and proselytize and the need to be able to diagnose inner states from outward signs.
