Description / Table of Contents:
This disserataion gives a detailed, diachronic descritpion of the social, political, legal and economic organization of the Mataco - hunters and gatherrs of the tropical dry forest of the Bolivian Gran Chaco. The account starts with a critical review of the main ethnographic sources on the Chaco peopes and, after sections on the environment and the local history, it presents an attempt to reconstruct the socio-economic organization of the Mataco before the colonization of the area, i.e. before the turn of the century. In addition, on the basis of the author's field notes from five years among the Mataco, new ethnographic data is included and our knowledge of this people brought up to date. The data demonstrate that, in spit of evident social change, and in contrast to other Indian people of the region, the Mataco have refused to be incorporated into the national society. Recently they have been able to reconstruct features of their traditional socio-economic organization that have been absent for several decades. This traditionalism is chracterized by a perpetuation of what are perceived to be Mataco values, a maintained strong ethnic identity and a fiction of cultural continuity. This has been possible because of the slow pace of colonization, the flexible social organisation based on alliances between small, independent ambilineal units, economic independence owing to commercialization of handicraft and fishing, and affirmation of legal rights to portions of their former territory.
