Abstract:
Following the historical analysis of the tsetse problem in East Africa the main part of the sutdy is devoted to an economic examination of alternative possibilities to use tsetse areas for livestock production. The tools of a social cost benefit analysis according to Little and Mirriees are applied to the following alternatives: (1) Tsetse control followed by cattle keeping, (2) Cattle keeping while controlling trypanosomiasis with drugs, (3) Inroduction of trypanotolerant dwarf cattle from West Africa. Finally, approaches to the development of a tstse control strategy within the framework of general land use planning are shown. (Umschlagtext)
