Abstract: The Mossi people of Burkina Faso have a rich and complex history that is mirrored by the several types and styles of figures and masks they create. The chiefs use political art in the form of royal figures to validate their rule, while those in the spiritual class make masks that represent the spirits of nature. Unlike several other West African peoples, the Mossi have not converted to Islam in large numbers, so they continue to create spiritual art much as their ancestors did hundreds of years ago. As this book attests, the Mossi have continued to create brilliant works that they use to this day to express ideas about politics and religion.

Abstract: This new title in the Visions of Africa series offers a deep insight into the art of the Kota people of Gabon in the coastal area of western equatorial Africa. The Kota have developed an astonishing creativity in their representations of their ancestors. Their dreamlike figures combine a sharp sense of stylized reality tending towards abstraction with an extraordinary and imaginative use of copper, tin, and iron for purposes of decoration. But what seems to have been just a matter of aesthetic "taste" has in fact a symbolic function, as most of the decorative motifs and the choice of the technique are linked to the Kota`s kinship system or religious beliefs. The same applies to the use of copper, which was a rare material and consequently a mark of wealth and power in their society. The mbulu-ngulu reliquary figure was an icon, the visual sign of a world in which the ancestors continued to watch over their descendants. In Kota lands it was an essential "tool" in group survival, one that enabled a continuous communication to be established between the living and the dead. The reliquary figures and initiation masks of the Kota and Mbete served as aides-mémoire and instruments useful in arousing the forces of the netherworld among the Gabonese and Congolese in times past. Together with the Fang byeri and other nkisi punu, in their various forms they have gradually become the time-honoured emblems of the culture and ancestral values of the peoples of the great African equatorial forest.

Abstract: The volume explores the outstanding court art of one of the most powerful empires in West Africa between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries: the Benin kingdom of the Edo people. Renowned for their unique bronzes, ivory, and wood carvings, the guilds of court artists created thousands of artworks that were kept in the royal palace grounds of Benin City until their dispersal throughout the world in 1897, when the empire succumbed to British rule. The book introduces the complex history, iconography, and function of Benin royal art and discusses various approaches to its interpretation and stylistic development. With the focus on the pre-colonial artistic expressions that once adorned the royal palace and its shrines, which were essential elements in court rituals and representation, the text throws light on one of the most fascinating chapters in African art history. Abstract: This volume explores the intriguing sculpture and decorative art of the Kuba people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Best known for their king figures (ndop), considered among the greatest sculptural achievements of Sub-Saharan Africa, the Kuba actually produced little freestanding sculpture. Instead, they focused on a variety of decorative works that indicated success and achievement, and initiation-related pieces such as masks. The first book dedicated exclusively to this subject, Kuba examines the tribe`s artistic development from the 17th century through the turbulent colonial and post-colonial periods. The authors also explore the impact of Kuba beliefs on their art and discuss the pervasive concerns that inform the tribe`s art making. With 50 beautifully reproduced examples and an engaging, informative text, Kuba is a fascinating introduction to African art. (Verlagsangaben)

Abstract: Situated in the south-west of Gabon, the Punu are part of a group of people known essentially for their white masks. These objects, which continue to impress collectors and enthusiats of African art, had already fascinated Western artists at the start of the 20th century. The idealized realism of the face covered with white clay, the slightly narrowed eyes, the mouth with finely-edged red lips and the sophisticated head-dress composed of several locks of plaited hair are some of the stylistic features of these masks. The volume examines the context of ritual use of these important objects, which the Punu and related peoples would bring out for their dances. This study of the Punu traditions and their overlap with the history of other peoples in southern Gabon is also pursued though an examination of other, less well-known objects, such as the statues for magic uses, amulets, and musical instruments. Abstract: This introduction to the sculpture of one of the best-known peoples in Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo focuses exclusively on sculpture in the round. After situating the Chokwe in a temporal and spatial context, successive chapters look at figurines used in the divination ritual, statues related to the hamba possession cults, ancient traditional statuary (eighteenth and nineteenth centuries) known as the "homeland style", court objects reserved for the warrior aristocracy and the wooden masks associated with the chieftaincies and the initiation rites surrounding circumcision. Particular attention is paid to the precious figures of Chibinda Ilunga, the civilising hero of the origin myths, almost all of which came to Europe in the nineteenth century, as well as to stools, whose symbolism and function give insight into the Chokwe's religious beliefs and the hierarchical structure of the chieftaincies. Some fifteen field photographs, many previously unpublished prints from the archives of the ethnographic section of the Musée royal de l'Afrique centrale (Tervuren), illustrate the text.
