Abstract:
This is a history of the hydrpolitics of the Nile Valley from 1900 to 1988. The Nile is the longest river in the world, and its basin covers a vast area, inhabited by millions. Attempts to develop the Nile and control its waters are of fundamental importance to the future of the inhabitans of Egypt, the Sudan, Ethiopia, and East Africa. Acute drought and heavy flooding in the Nile Basin have both wreaked havoc in the past, and man has struggled to control the precious waters. Engineers and hydrologists from Britain, Egypt, and the Sudan, with proposals from the Awan High Dam to the Jonglei Canal, have determined the way of life of the millions of people who depend on the Nile waters.
