Abstract: This volume is an attempt to give the American reader an idea of the extent of the Dutch network of trade in the seventeenth century. Although some effort is made to sketch out, however briefly, the activities of the Dutch in various regions throughout the century, emphas1s has been placed on their first entrance into these areas in that period. In each area the goods which the Netherlanders received have been indicated as well as the products they traded for them. The arrangement of the chapters calls for an explanation. Students of Dutch history will think of Surat and Persia as a natural unit, and of Malabar and Ceylon, Japan and China, West Africa and Brazil as being other entities which one would naturally discuss together. I have adopted the more obvious national divisions, Persia, India, Japan, Brazil, etc., as being more easily com prehensible for the casual reader. Within the chapters I have then explained the trade connections between West Africa and Brazil, Surat and Persia, and so forth.

Abstract: The fourth volume on Dutch silver deals with those embossed ecclesiastical and secular objects which are not described in Volume I. Since that volume is confined to plaquettes, tazze and dishes, together with the complete oeuvre of the three most famous artists Adam and Paul van Vianen, and Lutma, a large variety of objects remains to be dealt with. Amongst these are many very important and beautiful vessels. The principal pieces described in this volume are of ecclesiastical origin such as monstrances, ciboriums, chalices, pyxes, chrismatories, mass-cruets, incense-boats and burners, altar-thrones, lecterns, missal covers, canon-board frames, altar -bells, altar-vases, altar -candlesticks, sanctuary lamps and sconces. Further, secular silver such as plaquettes, tazze and dishes, that have come to our knowledge since the publication of the first volume, and also plaquette medals, boxes, book-covers, beakers, tankards, cups, bowls, basins, bottles, plate used for the toilet, for the table, candlesticks and plate used for the service of tea, coffee and chocolate. A general survey of a number of objects is given in the Introductions to the first and second volumes (Volume I, p. VI; Volume II, p. VI~XIV). Certain additional observations concerning the nature, technique of manufacture and decoration of the particular types of article illustrated in this volume are, however, necessary.

Abstract: In his former work, Burma in the Family oj Nations, Dr. Maung Maung has already gained an international reputation as a student of public affairs in Burma; in this new book he earns fresh laurels. It is mainly in two parts. In Part I he traces the genesis of the Constitution and in Part II he explains it. The first part outlines the constitutional progress of Burma under British rule, the changes under Dr. Ba Maw during the Japanese occupation, and further developments until the attainment of independence by the Anti Fascist People's Freedom League. Nowhere else can one find such a clear and comprehensive account of the political evolution of Burma since 1931, doubly significant by the Saya San rebellion and the birth of the Thakin movement; its value is enhanced by the reproduction of three documents not otherwise readily accessible: the interim Constitution under the Japanese; the Panglong Agreement, in which the Hill Peoples undertook to co-operate in framing the Constitution for the Union of Burma; and the original draft Constitution which the AFPFL published in May 1947 for consideration by the Constituent Assembly.

Abstract: This study is intended to present to the reader the main provisions of law affecting freedom of the press in India. It is specially concerned with examining how far freedom of the press obtains in free India. I t is proposed to discuss constitutional provisions and their application through various legislative measures with a view to seeing whether these provisions are sufficiently protective of this freedom. The intro ductory chapter attempts to indicate what is meant by freedom of the press. In the first chapter constitutional provisions are set out and discussed. The next five chapters deal, in the main, with statutory provisions relating to this freedom. The concluding chapter purports to make certain suggestions in relation to repeal or amendment of a few of these provisions. It may be mentioned that this study deals only with freedom of the press in normal times. The subject of civil liberties in India during a period of emergency has been dealt with in the present writer's doctoral thesis, Emergency Powers in the $tates of Southern Asia (London Uni versity, 1959) In the preparation of this study, I have benefited from the guidance and encouragement given by several persons and the assistance and facilities provided by various institutions. I wish to express my thanks to all of them.

Abstract: caused in the western camp. A further factor which operates to our disadvantage is the fact that in our democracies the role played by the mass of uprooted humanity is becoming increasingly important, and the problem of control and guidance of the masses still seems to be far from being solved. To all these burning questions an answer is given in this volume, Freedom and Serfdom, which contains a selection from the best contributions of world-renowned social economists, sociologists, philosophers and exponents of the political sciences, published for the first time in the English language. It is at this very moment that a work such as this, dedicated to the moral and intellectual struggle against communism and an analysis of our own democratic institu tions, is of particular and urgent importance. For it is imperative, surely, that we should use to the best possible advantage the relatively short time vouchsafed us by the sobering effects of the Paris con ference, before our opponents succeed once again in lulling us into a sense of complacent security. The purpose of this volume is not only to make a contribution towards the scientific clarification of some of the burning problems of the age, but also to instil a sense of urgency and vigilance, particularly in the younger generation, and to imbue them with courage and an eager readiness to fight for the ideals of the western world.

Abstract: This is one those rare prefaces in which the author need not attempt to justify, or apologize for, the addition of another book to an already over burdened field. There is certainly no plethora of serious studies on inter national organization in general, and almost none dealing with the administrative aspects of such organization. More precisely, the author is not aware of a single comprehensive treatment of the finances of any international political organization, past or present. Over the years, many former Secretariat members of the League, the United Nations, and their affiliated agencies have come forth with either memoirs or general commentaries on their organizations. And frequently these works have included revealing, but brief, passages dealing with budg etary questions, yet none has dealt with these questions in any detailed or thorough fashion. It is unfortunate that this is so. Not that the fate of the world rides on the United Nations budget, or that matters of peace and war will be determined by the dollars and cents of the Secretary-General's estimates. Yet questions of real importance to many of the world's citizens are decided in the budgetary struggle. Until the policy decisions of the various organs are translated into budget items, there is no visiting mission to encourageTogoland's movement toward eventual self-govern ment, no cease-fire observer in the Middle East, no rehabilitation com mission in South Korea, and no public administration advisor in San tiago.

Abstract: This book deals with the religious aspects and consequences of the Renaissance and Humanism. It is therefore advisable that these terms should first be defined to some extent. By Re naissance is meant here the new element in Western European culture, which became more and more evident in Italy during the I5th century and in about I500 completely dominated the great minds in that country. In the I6th century this new ele ment was carried to the countries on the other side of the Alps, where it developed vigorously during that century. The new element in that culture is found in the plastic arts, literature, philosophy and also - and this is the subject of the present study - in a modified religious attitude. The following chapters will show the content of this last change. Problems such as: what in general characterizes the Renaissance, by what was it caused, when did it begin and, in particular, whether the Re naissance forms a sharp contrast to the Middle Ages or whether it is a direct continuation of it, will not be discussed here. It will be clear from the above definition that I have placed first and foremost those things in the Renaissance which distinguish it from the Middle Ages.

Abstract: Under the inspiring guidance of my mentor, Curt Sachs, this work was conceived, planned, and executed. It gained in dimension under the acute and patient perusal of Gustave Reese to whose brilliant propensity for clarity of thought and of style I owe a huge debt. Furthermore, the helpful suggestions made by Martin Bernstein and by J an LaRue are gratefully acknowledged. If Jaap Kunst had not kindly gone to the trouble of ordering, supervising the con struction of, and mailing to me from Amsterdam his personally designed monochord, an important section of this work could not have taken form. This preface is not complete, of course, without final thanks to my husband, Harvey B. Natanson, for his sustained interest and encouragement. R. B. Note As the present work goes to press, the political map of Africa is flowing into a new mold. Several countries have obtained independence, and new names and data should be con sidered: French Equatorial Africa has become (November 28-December I, 1958) four independent countries - Republic of the Congo: Brazzaville (formerly Middle Congo), Gabon Republic (formerly Gabon) , Central African Republic (formerly Ubangi-Shari), and Republic of Chad (formerly Chad). The Belgian Congo has become (June 30,1960) the Republic of the Congo: Leopoldville.
