Abstract: This book engages with the discourses on human rights as they apply to the transgender or the hijra community in India, capturing not only their larger struggle for legal rights and dignity but also their personal hardships. It situates the issues and concerns of the Indian transgender community within a global context to explore the extent of social justice in independent India.By narrating stories of individuals, local movements and activities of groups like the Association of Transgenders and Hijras in Bengal, and the Pratyay Gender Trust, the book gives context to the changes that globalisation has brought to the narrative around transgenders in India. The shift caused by globalisation has challenged their marginalisation and has led to stories, films and queer individuals like Chapal Bhaduri - the jatra rani - and the iconic filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh to flourish and become relevant. This book brings these literatures and personal stories to the fore to allow readers to perceive the changes and the challenges that Indian society faces when it comes to ensuring the rights for transgender people. This volume will be of interest to scholars of gender studies, queer studies, literature and social work along with readers who want to engage with the transgender movement and community in India.

Abstract: The Silk Road and Cultural Exchanges Between East and West, originally written in Chinese by Rong Xinjiang and now translated into English, provides insights into previously unresolved issues concerning the interactions among the societies, economies, religions and cultures of the "Western Regions", and beyond, during the first millennium."This first and only English translation of Rong Xinjiang's The Silk Road and Cultural Exchanges Between East and West is a collection of 28 papers on the history of the Silk Road and the interactions among the peoples and cultures of East and Central Asia, including the so-called Western Regions in modern-day Xinjiang. Each paper is a masterly study that combines information obtained from historical records with excavated materials, such as manuscripts, inscriptions and artefacts. The new materials primarily come from north-western China, including sites in the regions of Dunhuang, Turfan, Kucha, and Khotan. The book contains a wealth of original insights into nearly every aspect of the complex history of this region"

Abstract: "John Martin (1789-1869) was a London-based, Edinburgh-educated physician interested in anthropological matters. This is his only book. He was inspired to write it by a chance encounter with its subject, William Mariner (1791-1853) who spent four years (1806-1810) in Tonga, in the South Pacific, one of the earliest European residents at a time before European influence disturbance or modification society. Mariner, an extraordinarily mature and perceptive youth, became thoroughly imbued with Tongan language and culture as the adopted son of the most powerful chief in Tonga. Thanks to Martin's intelligent engagement with Mariner resulted in a compelling narrative and a comprehensive account of Tongan society which became a classic. Often celebrated as an extraordinary real-life adventure story, it is a pioneering work of anthropology, and for 200 years it has been a primary and authoritative source for research into Tongan history and culture"--

Abstract: Analyses of humour often focus primarily on the Global North, with little consideration for examples and practices from elsewhere. This book provides a vital contribution to humour theory by developing a Global South perspective.Taking a wide-ranging view across the whole of the continent, the book examines the relationship between humour and politics in Africa. It considers the context of the production and reception of humour in African contexts and argues that humour is more than just symbolic. Moving beyond the idea of humour as a mode of resistance, the book investigates the `political work` that humour does and explores the complex entanglements in which the politics, practices and performances of humour are located.

Abstract: Grounded in anthropological comparison and the concept of materiality, this book offers an in-depth ethnographic study of the similarities and differences among various forms of religious practices in a Pentecostal Church (Christ Embassy) and an Islamic group (NASFAT) in the Nigerian capital of Abuja.Scholarship in this area tends to focus on inter-religious contestations and conflicts; however, this book proposes that another dynamic is unfolding between Christians and Muslims that is characterised by conviviality, interfaith joint action programmes, mutual influences and even the exchange of religious forms. The comparative approach reveals that, notwithstanding the seemingly opposed worldviews and divergences between Muslims and Christians, they all face similar challenges and apply similar techniques for meeting the challenges posed by the precarious Nigerian urban environment. It is through practices - especially those conducted in (semi-) public settings - that people from different religious persuasions define, encroach on and feel the weight of each other's presence.

Abstract: Watchfulness shapes many Chicanxs` and other People of Color`s everyday lives in San Diego. Experiencing racist discrimination can lead to becoming vigilant, which frames their subjectivity. Focusing particularly on Chicanxs, we show how they seek to intervene against structural inequalities and threats in their lives, such as by re-claiming space, consciousness raising, participating in protests, and healing practices. We argue that contestations surrounding belonging create particularly watchful selves and that this is a significant aspect of borderland lifeworlds more broadly. The book advances the Anthropology of borders, coloniality, subjectivity, and race, as well as contributing to Chicano and Latino Studies, and Urban Studies. Pushing the boundaries of conventional approaches, this book is methodologically innovative by including team fieldwork, digital ethnography, and illustrative work by a local artist. It fills a gap in Security Studies by examining peer-to-peer vigilance beyond top-down surveillance and bottom-up "sousveillance," and expanding previous understandings of watchfulness as an ambivalent practice that can also express care and contribute to community building, as well as representing a "way of life." Abstract: The American war against Iraq has caused hundreds of thousands of deaths and displaced millions of people. Between 20 March 2003 and 30 September 2017, more than 172,000 Iraqis resettled in the United States. This book explores the experiences of fifteen Iraqis who resettled in the US after 2003. It examines the long war against Iraq that began in 1991 and the decisions some Iraqis made to leave their homes and seek refuge in the United States. Abstract: As they seek to explore evolving and conflicting ideas of nationhood and modernity, India's writers have often chosen forests as the dramatic setting for stories of national identity. India's Forests, Real and Imagined explores how these settings have been integral to India sense of national consciousness. Alan Johnson demonstrates that modern writers have drawn on older Indian literary traditions of the forest as a place of exile, trial and danger to shape new ideas of India as a modern nation. The book casts new light on a wide range of modern writers, from Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay - widely regarded as the first Indian novelist - to contemporary authors such as Amitav Ghosh, Arundhati Roy, Salman Rushdie and Jhumpa Lahiri as well as local attitudes to nationhood and the environment across the country.

Abstract: In 1724-1726, the Dutch clergyman François Valentyn published a 5,000-page account of the Dutch East India Company's empire. It was the first and, for a long time, the only survey of the Dutch establishments in Asia and South Africa. Shaping a Dutch East Indies analyses how Valentyn composed this work and how it largely determined the Dutch perspective on the colonies in Asia until the 1850s. It seeks to highlight both the great diversity of knowledge gathered in Valentyn's book and its geographical spread, from the Cape of Good Hope to Japan, with a focus on the Indonesian archipelago. Huigen's book is the first in-depth study of Valentyn's work, which is a foundational text in the history of Dutch colonialism. (Umschlagtext)

Abstract: This book shines much-needed light on the history, structures and films of the Amharic film industry in Ethiopia. Focusing on the rise of the industry from 2002, until today, and embedded in archival, ethnographic and textual research methods, this book offers a sustained and detailed appreciation of Amharic-language cinema. Michael Thomas considers 'fiker'/love as an organising principle in national Ethiopian culture and, by extension, Amharic cinema. Placing 'fiker' as central to understanding Amharic film genres also illuminates the continuous negotiations at play between romantic, familial, patriotic and spiritual notions of love in these films.Thomas considers the production and exhibition of films in Ethiopia, charting fluctuations and continuities between the past and the present. Having done so, he offers detailed textual readings of films, identifying important junctures in the industry's development and the emergence of new genres. The findings of the book detail the affective characteristics that delineate most Amharic genres and the role culturally specific concepts, such as fiker, play in maintaining the relevance of commercial cinemas reliant on domestic audiences. Abstract: "Green tea, imported from China, occupies an important place in the daily lives of Malians. They spend so much time preparing and consuming the sugared beverage that it became the country's national drink. To find out how Malians came to practice the tea ritual, this study follows the beverage from China to Mali on its historical trade routes halfway around the globe. It examines the circumstances of its introduction, the course of the tea ritual, the equipment to prepare and consume it, and the meanings that it assumed in the various places on its travel across geographical regions, political economies, cultural contexts, and religious affiliations"

Abstract: In a series of legal battles starting in 1882, South Asian Muslims made up of modernists, traditionalists, reformists, Shias and Sunnis attempted to modify the laws relating to their places of worship. Their efforts failed as the ideals they presented flew in the face of colonial secularism. This book looks at the legal history of Muslim endowments and the intellectual and social history of sectarian identities, demonstrating how these topics are interconnected in ways that affected the everyday lives of mosque congregants across North India. Through the use of legal records, archives and multiple case studies Sana Haroon ties a series of narrative threads stretching across multiple regions in Colonial South Asia. (Umschlagtext)

Abstract: This book introduces readers to an ethnography about children in post-Soviet Kyrgyzstan and the values associated with their upbringing from local people`s own point of views. The author, who conducted her research in Kochkor, a village in northern Kyrgyzstan, approaches the topic of children and their childhood through the prism of `healthy growth`. In the local context, ideas about healthy growth of children are not limited to their physical, mental or emotional development; it also includes bringing up `culturally educated` members of society with proper moral values, as well as the conduct of culturally determined health-related and life-cycle rituals. Discourses on the healthy development of children are presented through the voices of the people of Kochkor about Kyrgyz cultural practices, the increasing role of Islam, modernity and globalisation in Kyrgyzstan and how these dynamics have changed their perceptions of children and their childhoods. Therefore, this book can also be seen as an ethnographic study of the social changes in post-Soviet Kyrgyzstan that are shaping and re-shaping the values, worldviews and daily practices of local people. Abstract: In 1978, Congolese inventor David Wabeladio Payi (1958-2013) proposed a new writing system, called Mandombe. Since then, Mandombe has grown and now has thousands of learners in not only the Democratic Republic of Congo, but also France, Angola and many other countries. Drawing upon Ramon Sarró's personal friendship with Wabeladio, this book tells the story of Wabeladio, his alphabet and the creativity that both continue to inspire. A member of the Kimbanguist church, which began as an anticolonial movement in 1921, Wabeladio and his script were deeply influenced by spirituality and Kongo culture. Combining biography, art, and religion, Sarró explores a range of ideas, from the role of pilgrimage and landscape in Wabeladio's life, to the intricacies and logic of Mandombe. Sarró situates the creative individual within a rich context of anthropological, historical and philosophical scholarship, offering a new perspective on the relationships between imagination, innovation and revelation. Abstract: This paper develops a film-philosophy, (which I call "?`rúnmìliàn film-philosophy"), by exploring and analyzing the praxis of O`rúnmìlà oral philosophy and narrative aesthetics in an African cinematic storytelling. It defends a modest thesis by using Saworoide (dir. Túndé Kèlání`s, 1999) as an example of how the African/Nigerian filmmakers are influenced by their inherited oral philosophical traditions. It argues that the condition of philosophy that gives "presence to non-presence" (so that the living can dialogue with the dead) and "knowledge to the unknown" (in order to heal and to re-moralize the living) is central to the O`rúnmìliàn film-philosophy. The central argument is based on what I call the O`rúnmìlà "parable of Eégún" (masquerade); and the film-philosophy finds some philosophical similarities in Stanley Cavell`s The World Viewed on the one hand, and Christopher Falzon`s concept of cinema as philosophy, (which is based on Plato`s parable of the cave), on the other. The paper therefore stresses the intercultural correlation between an African film-Philosophy and the modern European/western traditions of film-philosophy. It contributes to film and philosophy scholarship by exploring the manifestations of Yorùbá/O`rúnmìlà philosophical texts in the contemporary Nigerian film as case study of how contemporary African filmmakers, like their oral artiste counterparts, continue to articulate their inherited traditions via cinematic storytelling. - Keywords: Africa; Film; Philosophy; Storytelling; O`rúnmìlà; Yorùbá

Abstract: Today, African immigrants constitute a growing and increasingly visible component of the US population. African Immigrants in the United States: The Gendering Significance of Race? takes a closer look at the growth of African immigration to the United States in recent decades, as well as implications of this growth. Mamadi Corra highlights several resulting sociodemographic processes underway, including the changing composition of the foreign-born and US Black populations. Corra also takes a closer look at sociodemographic profiles of these "new African Americans" or "new Americans," highlighting the increasing diversity, yet also the racialized portrait of this group of immigrants. Key patterns discussed include the shifting racial and gender composition of immigrants, with a growing proportion of "Black" and female African immigrants on one hand and a decreasing proportion of "White" and male immigrants on the other hand. The book also compares socioeconomic profiles of African immigrants with other immigrant groups, as well as native-American subgroups. Taken together, Corra discovers that the salience of race that is mediated by gender.

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to give a voice to nameless and countless stories that represent the personal lived experiences of Sub-Saharan African immigrants in the US. The authors believe that telling our own stories from our own perspectives is important and empowering because when others tell our stories there are omissions and misrepresentations and a lot of stereotyping. This book seeks to produce a more specific description of Sub-Saharan African immigration in the US by recording our reflections, experiences, and strategies of coping, as well as those of the participants. We hope that the insights gained from the research in this book will be used by immigrant communities, academic institutions, and governmental agencies in advocating for immigration policies that positively impact the lived experiences of Sub-Saharan African immigrants, and in planning support interventions.Their voices are heard as they narrate their experiences, which are presented in the book under major themes that emerged from the interviews. These include how and why Sub-Saharan Africans immigrate to the United States of America (USA), their perceptions before, during and after the process of immigration, the challenges they face as they adjust, adapt, and settle in the USA, and the coping strategies they devise. The authors argue that issues of identity and lack of platforms where they can express their concerns as Sub-Saharan African immigrants and be heard are lacking. The authors are also using a phenomenological qualitative approach of collecting and interpreting participants` personal narratives and their lived experiences. (Umschlagtext)

Abstract: As corruption threatens state sovereignty and undermines the achievement of gender parity in politics, media have been pivotal in feminising corruption among female political office holders. By feminised corruption, I refer to recent trends of typifying women as corrupt and making more women visible among the corrupt across political spaces. While scholars have engaged with feminised poverty, focus on feminised corruption in transnational context is limited. Consequently, that media transnationalism essentialises women as higher moral agents is comprehensible; what is worrisome is how media transnationalism turns back to weaponise corruption against women in public office. Could an avowal that women are the world`s proletariat be connected with feminised corruption? If transnationalism resembles the "trans" in transvestism as Judith Butler suggests, how does media feminise corruption in transnational contexts? By focusing on feminised corruption among female political office holders, this study deploys Nigeria`s Diezani Allison Madueke`s corruption saga (1) to spotlight new, comparative insight that media transnationalism shed on feminised corruption (2) to understand how moral conduct of female political office holders affect women`s political participation, and; (3) to seek feminist moral approach that could address the challenges of feminised corruption. While this study is in no way justifying corruption or seeking to exonerate anyone, it calls attention to misogynistic use of media to deprive women and discourage new entrants from venturing politics. It emphasises moral tools necessary for any meaningful involvement of women in political activities and suggests how women may use these tools to survive and thrive within political spaces across states. - Keywords: African Feminist Ethics; feminised corruption; media transnationalism; medialities

Keywords: Ethnologie der Dinge, Ethnologische Museen, Universitätssammlungen, Fachgeschichte, Epis-temologie, BRD | Anthropology of things, ethnographic museums, university collections, disciplinary history, epistemology, FRG

Abstract: Africa reportedly exhibits lower overall levels of electoral integrity compared to other world regions. Remedying this situation has occasioned an explosion in the adoption of election technology. In 2023, Nigeria joined the wave of election digitalisation by holding its most technologically advanced polls since the inception of the Fourth Republic. But evidence from the elections contradicts the much-touted credibility guarantees that such technology comes with. (Verlagsangaben)

Abstract: Berlin is characterized by national, religious, and linguistic diversity and attracts young people from all over the world but there is no research on how they cope with their experience of dislocation. Insights from participant observation undertaken between 2017 and 2019 in the Anglophone comedy clubs that popped up like mushrooms after rain suggest that they developed what Homi Bhabha referred to as "practices of vernacular cosmopolitanism". Indians, Israelis, Palestinians, US citizens, Russians, and Ukrainians got in touch and laughed at ethnic and racist stereotypes performed on stage and even jokes about the holocaust. There was hardly a show without references to the Third Reich - almost as if their laughter celebrated the Führer`s defeat in a city that had once been the capital of Nazi Germany. Their ostentatious light-heartedness must be taken seriously because the new Berliners demonstrated their presence in the German capital and stubbornly enjoyed being in Berlin. Keywords: Humor, ethnicity, racism, migration, comedy, cosmopolitanism, Berlin | Humor; Ethnizität; Rassismus; Migration; Comedy; Kosmopolitismus; Berlin

Keywords: Entwicklung, Ethnologie, Geschichte, Deutschland | development, anthropology, history, Germany

Abstract: Since 2012, judges and prosecutors in Benin have gone on strike repeatedly, sometimes for months at a time. They are protesting against sweeping accusations of corruption, irregular appointments and political influence. On 10 July 2014, the dispute between the judiciary and the government came to a head. Wearing judicial robes, the magistrates demonstrated on the streets of Porto-Novo against the government`s bill to take away their right to strike and other freedoms. What moved them not only to stop working again and again, but even to protest in the streets wearing their robes? What does it mean to be a magistrate and to work in this profession in this politically tense situation in Benin? Why do the magistrates act the way they do? In this book, the actions and views of state magistrates are examined and thus contribute to the larger question of how statehood functions in Africa and Benin in particular. In doing so, a portrait of a professional group which goes back to 1894 was created. (Verlagsangaben)

Abstract: Examines the paradoxes of kinship in the lives of unauthorized African migrants as they struggle for mobility, employment, and citizenship in Europe. In a rapidly changing and highly precarious context, unauthorized African migrants turn to kinship in search of security, stability, and predictability. Through the exchange of identity documents between "siblings," assistance in obtaining such documentation through kinship networks, and marriages that provide access to citizenship, new assemblages of kinship are continually made and remade to navigate the shifting demands of European states. These new kinship relations, however, often prove unreliable, taking on new, unexpected dynamics in the face of codependency; they become more difficult to control than those who entered into such relations could have imagined. Through unusually close ethnographic work in West African migrant communities in Amsterdam, Apostolos Andrikopoulos reveals unseen dynamics of kinship through shared papers, the tensions of race and gender that develop in mutually beneficial marriages, and the vast, informal networks of people, information, and documentation on which migrants rely. Throughout Argonauts of West Africa, Andrikopoulos demonstrates how inequality, exclusionary practices, and the changing policies of an often-violent state demand innovative ways of doing kinship to successfully navigate complex migration routes.
