Abstract: Cultural Evolution argues that people's values and behavior are shaped by the degree to which survival is secure; it was precarious for most of history, which encouraged heavy emphasis on group solidarity, rejection of outsiders, and obedience to strong leaders. For under extreme scarcity, xenophobia is realistic: if there is just enough land to support one tribe and another tribe tries to claim it, survival may literally be a choice between Us and Them. Conversely, high levels of existential security encourage openness to change, diversity, and new ideas. The unprecedented prosperity and security of the postwar era brought cultural change, the environmentalist movement, and the spread of democracy. But in recent decades, diminishing job security and rising inequality have led to an authoritarian reaction. Evidence from more than 100 countries demonstrates that people's motivations and behavior reflect the extent to which they take survival for granted - and that modernization changes them in roughly predictable ways. This book explains the rise of environmentalist parties, gender equality, and same-sex marriage through a new, empirically-tested version of modernization theory
Description / Table of Contents: Introduction : overview of this book -- Evolutionary modernization and cultural change -- The rise of postmaterialist values in the West and the world -- Global cultural patterns -- The end of secularization? -- Cultural change, slow and fast : the distinctive trajectory of norms governing gender equality and sexual orientation -- The feminization of society and declining willingness to fight for one's country : the individual-level component of the long peace -- Development and democracy -- The changing roots of happiness -- The silent revolution in reverse : the rise of Trump and the authoritarian populist parties -- The coming of artificial intelligence society

Abstract: This history of African slavery from the fifteenth to the early twentieth centuries examines how indigenous African slavery developed within an international context. Paul E. Lovejoy discusses the medieval Islamic slave trade and the Atlantic trade as well as the enslavement process and the marketing of slaves. He considers the impact of European abolition and assesses slavery's role in African history. The book corrects the accepted interpretation that African slavery was mild and resulted in the slaves' assimilation. Instead, slaves were used extensively in production, although the exploitation methods and the relationships to world markets differed from those in the Americas. Nevertheless, slavery in Africa, like slavery in the Americas, developed from its position on the periphery of capitalist Europe. This new edition revises all statistical material on the slave trade demography and incorporates recent research and an updated bibliography

Abstract: This book develops a theory of existential security. It demonstrates that the publics of virtually all advanced industrial societies have been moving toward more secular orientations during the past half century, but also that the world as a whole now has more people with traditional religious views than ever before. This second edition expands the theory and provides new and updated evidence from a broad perspective and in a wide range of countries. This confirms that religiosity persists most strongly among vulnerable populations, especially in poorer nations and in failed states. Conversely, a systematic erosion of religious practices, values and beliefs has occurred among the more prosperous strata in rich nations

Abstract: "This history of African slavery from the fifteenth to the early twentieth centuries examines how indigenous African slavery developed within an international context. It is already being widely used for student essays, and looks set to become one of the textbooks of African history for many years to come." - William Gervase Clarence-Smith, African Affairs "Lovejoy produced a book which was both comprehensive and analytic ... this book provided the framework for much subsequent research on African slavery. Lovejoy looked at early slavery and at the impact of a series of expanding frontiers in expanding the trade and redefining the use of slaves within Africa." - Martin A. Klein, Canadian Journal of African Studies "... the author is to be congratulated for his temerity in tackling a difficult task and producing a viable, comprehensive, and emotionally balanced work which will be of great help to scholars and should lead to lively discussion." - Suzanne Miers, Canadian Journal of African Studies "This is a very important book. It will almost certainly excite controversy, for while he is clear about the intensification of servitude as a consequence of the external trade he does not portray indigenous systems as benign. Withal he pushes slavery into the forefront of African historiography and there can be little doubt it belongs there." - Richard Rathbone, Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies

Abstract: The twentieth century gave rise to profound changes in traditional sex roles. However, the force of this 'rising tide' has varied among rich and poor societies around the globe, as well as among younger and older generations. Rising Tide sets out to understand how modernization has changed cultural attitudes towards gender equality and to analyze the political consequences of this process. The core argument suggests that women and men's lives have been altered in a two-stage modernization process consisting of (i) the shift from agrarian to industrialized societies and (ii) the move from industrial towards post industrial societies. This book is the first to systematically compare attitudes towards gender equality worldwide, comparing almost 70 nations that run the gamut from rich to poor, agrarian to postindustrial. Rising Tide is essential reading for those interested in understanding issues of comparative politics, public opinion, political behavior, political development, and political sociology
Abstract: Introduction: explaining the rising tide of gender equality -- From traditional roles toward gender equality -- Religion, secularization, and gender equality -- Gender gap in voting and public opinion -- Political activism -- Women as political leaders -- Conclusions: gender equality and cultural change

Abstract: This book examines the gradual decline of slavery in Northern Nigeria during the first forty years of colonial rule. At the time of the British conquest, the Sokoto Caliphate was one of the largest slave societies in modern history. The authors have written a thoughtful and provocative book which raises doubts over the moral legitimacy of both the Sokoto Caliphate and the colonial state. They chart the development of British colonial policy towards resolving the dilemma of slavery and how to end it. (Umschlagtext)

This new edition revises all statistical material on the slave trade demography and incorporates recent research and an updated bibliography. (Verlagsangaben)
