Seit einigen Jahren steht dieser Gesundheitssektor im Zentrum politischer Diskurse um strukturelle Reformen. Das ambulante Organisationsnetzwerk verfügt jedoch über eine spezifische Funktionslogik und Rollenverteilung sowie erhebliche Beharrungskräfte, die Strukturreformen bisher verhindert haben. Mit Hilfe einer historisch-soziologischen Analyse der Entwicklung von 1883 bis 2000 zeigt Thomas Tauchnitz, wie sich ein strukturell homogenes und interessenpolitisch weitgehend konsensuelles System ausgebildet hat, das eine Monopolstellung in der medizinischen Versorgung der Bevölkerung erlangen und eine hohe Wandlungsresistenz entwickeln konnte. Durch seine organisationssoziologische Studie wird nicht nur die Entwicklungsgeschichte einer "mächtigen" Struktur in der modernen Organisationsgesellschaft rekonstruierbar, sondern es lassen sich auch aktuelle Entwicklungen, Perspektiven und Handlungsblockaden im Gesundheitssektor erklären

Christmann geht von der Annahme aus, dass Stadtkultur und städtische Identität historisch in stadtbezogenen Diskursen innerhalb der öffentlichen Lokalkommunikation entstanden sind. Zentrale Austragungsorte sind Lokalmedien und öffentliche Veranstaltungen. Auf der Basis der sozialkonstruktivistischen Wissenssoziologie von Peter L. Berger und Thomas Luckmann rekonstruiert die Autorin mittels einer Diskursanalyse die historische Herausentwicklung und die thematischen Kristallisationen der Dresdner Stadtkultur. Im Mittelpunkt stehen folgende Fragen: Wie wird Dresden in der öffentlichen Lokalkommunikation typischerweise dargestellt und wie haben sich die Darstellungen im Laufe der Geschichte verändert? Wie charakterisieren Bürger ihre Stadt und wie setzen sie sich zu ihr in Bezug? Inwiefern gibt es zwischen den kommunikativ vermittelten Wirklichkeitsdeutungen der Lokalkommunikation und den subjektiven Wirklichkeitsdeutungen der Bürger Kongruenzen? Es wird deutlich, dass innerhalb der verschiedenen Formen der Lokalkommunikation über die Jahrhunderte hinweg typische Topoi regelmäßig wiederkehren, die zu dem geführt haben, was bis heute die Identität der Stadt Dresden ausmacht

    Abstract: In the later months of 1874, the great French poet, Stephane Mallarme, undertook a highly idiosyncratic project - the publication of a fashion magazine (La Derniere Mode) that he almost single-handedly wrote and edited. Using a variety of feminine and masculine pseudonyms to theorize about the concept of fashion and to report and advise on womens clothing, popular vacation destinations, home furnishings and entertainment, Mallarme created a spectacularly original work that lies somewhere between Baudelaires seminal treatment of fashion in his essay on modernity, The Painter of Modern Life, and The Fashion System, Barthes brilliant semiology of clothing in the latter twentieth century. But the distinguishing feature of Mallarms magazine, and what differentiates it from the writing of Baudelaire and Barthes, is that it explores the nature of fashion from the inside. It is a genuine fashion magazine aspiring to lead fashion, though at the same time, by ingenious and appealing ironies, subtly satirizing this whole genre of writing. Various theories have been entertained about the work in the past, such as its being a prose poem, or alternatively a hoax or a mere money-making venture, but the present translators, in their commentary, argue that such guesses are hopelessly off the mark.     Abstract: How does culture shape notions of sexuality and gender? Why are transvestites in the West so often seen as deviant or perverse, while they are accepted in other societies? What are the implications for the categories of male and female when considering transvestism? Transvestism, and its cultural practice, is a useful lens through which we can view and thus debate models of sex, gender and sexuality. Drawing on primary fieldwork, Unzipping Gender offers a cross-cultural study of transvestism through an examination of transvestites in Britain and the Hijras of India. The author tackles the critical question of whether or not transvestism is motivated primarily by sex or gender, and she challenges the straightforward binary divide that dominates Western theories of gender. Taking into account the importance of material culture, she also pays close attention to the detail of dress and considers the artefactual nature of the construction of the self through clothing. Highlighting the differences between the two groups and drawing on further cross-cultural perspectives, Suthrell illustrates the social construction of sex and gender. She considers the roles that emotion, mythology, imagery and belief systems play in influencing ideas about sex and gender in different cultures. Since sex and gender must inevitably be intertwined, Suthrell argues for a more sophisticated response to the complex practice of transvestism. In order to gain a deeper understanding of sex and gender issues, it is imperative to examine the underlying social and symbolic structures. This unique study across cultures leads the way

Sie können seinem Schutz dienen, ihm Sicherheit vermitteln, sie können ihn aber auch schmücken und seiner Person Sozialprestige und Respekt verleihen. In jedem Fall jedoch grenzen Geheimnisse den wissenden Geheimnisträger vom nicht-wissenden Außenstehenden ab und strukturieren so die Form und die Qualität sozialer Beziehungen sowohl auf der Mikro- als auch auf der Makroebene. Claudia Schirrmeister setzt sich eingehend mit dem Geheimnis und seinen Erscheinungsformen auseinander. Sie untersucht Strategien des Verheimlichens (z.B. Lügen) und wie sich Geheimnisse in der Kommunikation "zeigen". Dabei stellt sie die Relevanz und Bedeutung der Verteilung von Wissen und bewusstem Verhindern von Wissen für soziale Beziehungen heraus. Sie beleuchtet u.a. die moralische Ambiguität des Geheimnisses in seinen illegitimen und in seinen legitimierten, institutionalisierten Formen und berücksichtigt ebenso sein Pendant, die Enthüllung, die z.     Note: Seit Max Webers Artikel "Konfuzianismus und Taoismus" sind im Hinblick auf das makrosoziologische Wissen über China keine grundlegenden Fortschritte zu verzeichnen. Ausgehend von den Gegebenheiten des heutigen Taiwan in der modernen Weltgesellschaft untersucht Chih-Chieh Tang die gesellschaftliche Entwicklung vom archaischen über das traditionelle China bis zum modernen Taiwan nach dem systemtheoretischen Ansatz. Er präsentiert ein heuristisches Gesamtbild dieser Evolution und diskutiert Übereinstimmungen und Differenzen zwischen der im Lande entstandenen und der endogenen funktionalen Differenzierung im Westen. Abschließend stellt er Überlegungen an über eine mögliche Komplementarität der Logik der funktionalen Differenzierung zum chinesischen Yin/Yang-Denken in Richtung der Systemrationalität

Die Ergebnisse zeigen wider Erwarten, dass medizinische Kategorien der Demenz, d.h. der psychischen, physischen und mentalen Veränderungen, die tatsächliche Entwicklung der hier untersuchten Population nicht adäquat beschreiben bzw. prognostizieren. Die einschneidendste Veränderung für die große Mehrheit der Kranken, eine Aufnahme in ein Pflegeheim, hängt offensichtlich nicht von medizinischen Variablen des Krankheitsverlaufs ab, sondern von sozialen Situationen bzw. Kommunikationen im jeweiligen Netzwerk, die oft aufgrund einer kritischen Zuspitzung eine Heimeinweisung nahe legen. Um diese Aufnahme zu erreichen, nutzen Experten, abgelöst vom tatsächlichen Krankheitszustand des Pflegebedürftigen, eher medizinische Variablen, die eine schwerste Erkrankung signalisieren, als dass sie mit sozialen Variablen ein sich prekär entwickelndes soziales Umfeld beschreiben und damit die Heimaufnahme begründen

    Abstract: With so much focus on contemporary theory, it is easy to forget that the serious analysis of clothing and fashion has a long history. In fact, they have been the subject of intense cultural debate since the nineteenth century. Fashion Classics provides an interpretative overview of the groundbreaking and often idiosyncratic writings of eight theorists whose work has profoundly influenced the conceptual and theoretical basis of our contemporary understanding of clothes and the fashion system. Carter fully revives early fashion theorists - some canonical and others less well known - and examines them in light of more recent work. From Carlyles fantastical character Professor Teufelsdrockh, through the first Freudian analysis of clothes by J.C. Flugel, the pioneering work of Spencer, Veblen, Simmel, Kroeber, Laver and finally Barthes monumental work on the modern fashion system, this book explores and explains the foundations of fashion theory. Not only does it provide an historical outline of Western conceptions of clothes and fashion, but it also highlights how ideas intermix and build on one another. Carters lively narrative clearly shows that views on fashion have always been impassioned perhaps most notably Carlyles notorious attack on Dandyism and Veblens suggestion that clothes should be made out of old newspaper.     Note: Die Entsendung deutscher Unternehmensmitarbeiter in arabisch-islamische Länder wurde bislang in der Forschung kaum thematisiert, und Orientierungshilfen für die Teilnehmer an Auslandseinsätzen in diesen Ländern fehlen. Der vorliegende Band präsentiert theoretische Ausführungen zu Kultur, kultureller Gebundenheit, Befangenheit und Kommunikationsstilen in kulturellen Überschneidungssituationen. Er gibt eine Einführung in den arabisch-islamischen Raum und bietet eine Beschreibung Ägyptens, Jordaniens und Marokkos. Auf der Basis einer Befragung wird untersucht, wie Entsandte deutscher Betriebe ihre Situation in diesen drei Ländern erleben, wie sie die Kultur des Gastlands wahrnehmen und beurteilen, mit welchen kulturellen Problemen sie konfrontiert sind und wie sie damit umgehen. Es zeigt sich, dass die meisten Auslandsentsandten die kulturelle Homogenität überbetonen und kulturell befangen sind. Sie passen sich einseitig an und vermeiden so das Aushandeln von Praktiken und Regeln für die Zusammenarbeit mit den Einheimischen

Er betrachtet künstlerische Kreativität nicht im Gegensatz, sondern in Abhängigkeit von Konventionalität und entwickelt einen (handlungs-)theoretischen Bezugsrahmen, den er der Konstruktion eines Modells und einer Komponistenbefragung zugrunde legt. Es erweist sich, dass Produzenten ästhetischer Medienangebote diese grundsätzlich im Wissen um Nutzererwartungen und damit auch im Wissen um Hoch- und Niedrigkonventionalität materialisieren. Der Autor zeigt, dass dies entscheidende Auswirkungen auf die klassischen Determinanten ästhetischer Theorien hat, und reflektiert diese Auswirkungen vor dem Hintergrund seines Ansatzes

What does the growing commodification and globalization of food mean for our capacity to store the past in our meals--in the smell of olive oil or the taste of a fresh-cut fig? This book offers a theoretical account of the interrelationship of culture, food and memory. Sutton challenges and expands anthropology's current focus on issues of embodiment, memory and material culture, especially in relation to transnational migration and the flow of culture across borders and boundaries. The Greek island of Kalymnos in the eastern Aegean, where Islanders claim to remember meals long past--both humble and spectacular--provides the main setting for these issues, as well as comparative materials drawn from England and the United States. Despite the growing interest in anthropological accounts of food and in the cultural construction of memory, the intersection of food with memory has not been accorded sustained examination. Cultural practices of feasting and fasting, global flows of food as both gifts and commodities, the rise of processed food and the relationship of orally transmitted recipes to the vast market in speciality cookbooks tie traditional anthropological mainstays such as ritual, exchange and death to more current concerns with structure and history, cognition and the 'anthropology of the senses'.     Abstract: Our dress is our identity. In dress, we live, move and have our social being. This book shows how the dressed body is central to the construction of a recognizable identity and provides accessible accounts of the particular dress ways' associated with a considerable variety of lifestyles. Churchgoers, ballerinas, Muslim schoolgirls, glamour models, vampires', monks and country gents all fashion a social self through dress. These cultures all have characteristic forms of displaying the dressed body for social visibility - whether in religion, sex, performance, or on the street. In contrast to much of the literature on dress, which often assumes a lack of agency on the part of the wearer, contributors to this book focus on the conscious manipulation of dress to reflect an identity that is designed to look different'. Why do people choose to mark themselves off socially from others? What are the costs and benefits? For every dress identity', there is a corresponding set of entitlements and expectations as to behaviour and belief. Priestly' bodies inhabit a different universe of response from strippers, just as Gothic' bodies experience the public gaze differently from Methodist' ones. Where one look commands respect in one setting, in another it can incite antipathy and rejection. Contributors tackle head-on this paradox of dress' - its potent power to unite and divide. Evidence of the dressed body's social ambiguity as a medium of consensus, on the one hand, and conflict, on the other, provides a glimpse through dress into an elementary condition of social and cultural life that has all too rarely been part of historical and sociological discourse

    Abstract: Relating to clothes is a fundamental experience in the lives of most Western women. Even when choice is fraught with ambivalence, clothing matters. From considerations about dressing for success, to worries about weight, through to investing particular articles of clothing with meaning bordering on the sacred, what we wear speaks volumes about personal identity - what is revealed, what is concealed, what is created. This book fills a gap in the existing literature on the ambivalence of fashion and dress by drawing on a wide range of women's experiences with their wardrobes and providing empirical data noticeably absent from other studies of women and dress.     Abstract: Most people conceive of gender as a culturally informed response to a biological imperative. But such rigid notions are overturned by certain women in remote regions of Albania who elect to 'become' men simply for the advantages that accrue to them as a result. They crop their hair, wear men's clothes, roll their own cigarettes, drink brandy and carry guns. In short, their lives are much freer and less regimented than other members of their sex - but at a cost. These women must foreswear sexual relationships, marriage and children. They have been dubbed 'Sworn Virgins'. What is interesting is that in this region of the Balkans, simply to dress as a man and to behave as a man will earn these women the same respect accorded a man. This is no mean advantage in an area known for sexual inequality and where so many men have suffered violent, premature deaths, thereby heightening the need for more household heads. Traditionally as heads of household, men are revered and the women who attend them utterly subservient. But unlike 'normal' women, Sworn Virgins can inherit and manage property, and, in fact, may even be raised to assume the male role by parents who have no male heirs. Based on extensive interviews, this book tells the frank and engrossing stories of these women, but also sets their lives within the wider context of a country undergoing radical upheaval and social transformation

    Abstract: Uniforms are not unique to Japan, but their popularity there suggests important linkages: material culture, politico-economic projects, bodily management, and the construction of subjectivity are all connected to the wearing of uniforms. This book examines what the donning of uniforms says about cultural psychology and the expression of economic nationalism in Japan. Conformity in dress is especially apparent amongst students, who are required to wear uniforms by most schools. Drawing on concrete examples, the author focuses particularly on student uniforms, which are key socializing objects in Japan's politico-economic order, but also examines office ladies' (secretaries), salary men' (white collar workers), service personnel, and housewives, who wear a type of uniformed dress. Arguing that uniforms can be viewed as material markers of a life cycle managed by powerful politico-economic institutions, he also shows that resistance to official state projects is expressed by anti-uniforming' modes of self
