Series Statement: South Asia Across the Disciplines [15]
Keywords: Bangladesh Film ; Spielfilm ; Popular Culture ; Pornographie ; Soziales Leben
Abstract: Imagine watching an action film in a small-town cinema hall in Bangladesh, and in between the gun battles and fistfights a short pornographic clip appears. This is known as a cut-piece, a strip of locally made celluloid pornography surreptitiously spliced into the reels of action films in Bangladesh. Exploring the shadowy world of these clips and their place in South Asian film culture, Lotte Hoek builds a rare, detailed portrait of the production, consumption, and cinematic pleasures of stray celluloid. Hoek's innovative ethnography plots the making and reception of Mintu the Murderer (2005, pseud.), a popular, Bangladeshi B-quality action movie and fascinating embodiment of the cut-piece phenomenon. She begins with the early scriptwriting phase and concludes with multiple screenings in remote Bangladeshi cinema halls, following the cut-pieces as they appear and disappear from the film, destabilizing its form, generating controversy, and titillating audiences. Hoek's work shines an unusual light on Bangladesh's state-owned film industry and popular practices of the obscene. She also reframes conceptual approaches to South Asian cinema and film culture, drawing on media anthropology to decode the cultural contradictions of Bangladesh since the 1990s.

Abstract: This pioneering study, based on the authors's extensive fieldwork among the Hamar of southern Ethiopia, develops a radically new approach to symbolic production and ritual action. Dr. Strecker begins with a critique of earlier theories of symbolism, in particular those of the anthropologists Victor Turner and Dan Sperber. Drawing his own inspiration from the work of the Painter René Magritte and the philosopher Paul Grice, he develops and alternative, rhetorical theory of symbolism, in which symbolization is seen as an act of displacement or "conversational implicature." He then proceeds to analyse the production of multvocality in social life. Why, he asks, do people in certain social situations choose to communicate though multivocal symbols rather than through univocal signs? To answer this question he draws on a recent study of politeness phenomena by Penelope Brown and Stephen Levinson. By applying a discouse analysis to his own rich Hamar data, he re-examines Brown and Levinson's theory and shows how it helps us to understand symbolization as a social practice. He demonstrates that a theory of politeness is also a theory of social domination: how to honour provides the recipe for how to dishonour. Finally, he extends the theory of politeness into a general theory of ritual, and applies it to an analysis of a Hamar rite of transition.
