Abstract: "Latinas on the Line" provides a compelling analysis and historical and theoretical grounding of the oral histories, never before seen, of Latina information workers in the Bell System from their entrance in 1973 to their retirements by 2015. Author Melissa Villa-Nicholas demonstrates the importance of Latinas of the field of telecommunications through their own words and uses supporting archival research to provide an overview of how Latinas engage and remember a critical analysis of their work place, information technologies, and the larger globalized economy and shifting borderlands through their intersectional identities as information workers. The book offers a rich and engaging portrait of the critical history of Latinas in telecommunications, from their manual to automated to digitized labor. (Umschlagtext)

Abstract: The 2008 outcry over the "global land grab" made headlines around the world, leading to a sustained interest in the dynamics and fate of customary land among both academics and development practitioners. In Power/Knowledge/Land, author Laura German profiles the consolidation of a global knowledge regime surrounding land and its governance within international development circles in the decade following this outcry, and the growing enrollment of previously antagonistic actors within it. Drawing theoretical insights on the inseparability of power and knowledge, German reveals the dynamics of knowledge practices that have enabled the longstanding project of commodifying customary land - and the more contemporary interests in acquiring and financializing it - to be advanced and legitimated by capturing the energies of socially progressive forces. By bringing theories of change from the emergent land governance orthodoxy into dialogue with the ethnographic evidence from across the African continent and beyond, concepts masquerading as universal and self-evident truths are provincialized, and their role in commodifying customary land and entrenching colonial futurities put on display. In doing so, the volume brings wider academic debates surrounding productive forms of power into the heart of the land grab debate, while enhancing their accessibility to a wider audience. Power/Knowledge/Land takes current scholarly debates surrounding land grabs beyond their theoretical moorings in critical agrarian studies, political economy and globalization into contemporary debates surrounding the politics of knowledge-from theories of coloniality to ontological anthropology, thereby enabling new dynamics of the phenomenon to be revealed. The book deploys a pioneering epistemology integrating deconstructionist approaches (to reveal the tactics, truth claims and ontological assumptions of global knowledge brokers), with systematic qualitative reviews and comparative study (to contrast these dominant constructs with the evidence and reveal alternative ways of knowing "land" and practicing "security" from the ethnographic literature). This helps to reveal the Western and modernist biases in the narratives that have been advanced about women, custom, and security, revealing how the coloniality of knowledge works to grease the wheels of land takings by advancing highly provincialized constructs aligned with western interests as universal truths. Abstract: Exploring the multifaceted history of dispossession, consumption, and inequality in West Central Africa, Mariana P. Candido presents a bold revisionist history of Angola from the sixteenth century until the Berlin Conference of 1884-5. Synthesising disparate strands of scholarship, including the histories of slavery, land tenure, and gender in West Central Africa, Candido makes a significant contribution to ongoing historical debates. She demonstrates how ideas about dominion and land rights eventually came to inform the appropriation and enslavement of free people and their labour. By centring the experiences of West Central Africans, and especially African women, this book challenges dominant historical narratives, and shows that securing property was a gendered process. Drawing attention to how archives obscure African forms of knowledge and normalize conquest, Candido interrogates simplistic interpretations of ownership and pushes for the decolonization of African history. Abstract: The book delineates how the quest for wealth and belief manifests itself in contemporary Vietnam. Based on multi-local and longitudinal ethnographic research, the author examines how wealth is pursued by household members and entrepreneurs. The quest for belief is brought into relief through inquiry into how norms and values have been re-evaluated, altered, subverted or restored. Focusing on the taboo topic of female feticide, The study elucidates why some parents ultimately decide to commit feticide, and why others, especially entrepreneurs, refrain from it. The case of the entrepreneurs shows a possible way out of the "vicious circle" that leads to female feticide and perpetuates gender inequality. (Umschlagtext)

Abstract: Sub-Saharan Africa is considered the last region in the world where women still give birth to presumably too many children. However, within large cities such as Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, the average number of children per woman varies greatly. What is extraordinary, as this book shows, is that childbearing is a social action. Parenting allows one to consider different action alternatives, or rather, opportunities to act. These actions are not the same for everyone in different contexts. The book highlights that macro level socio-demographic changes, namely intraurban reproductive disparities are brought up by micro level (individual) actions. (Umschlagtext)

Abstract: This book attempts to reintegrate women into the socio-political milieu of early medieval Orissa. Its sources are inscriptions, mostly Sanskrit, that date from the seventh century to the end of the reign of the Imperial Ganga ruler, Anantavarman Codagangadeva (CE 1078-1147). The evidence indicates that royal and non-royal women had varying but undeniably important roles to play in the socio-political fabric of this prominent regional entity. The Bhauma-Kara dynasty (c. mid-eighth/ninth-late tenth century) that witnessed the rule of six women, four of them in succession, is a case in point. In addition, the palpable presence of several other royal and non-royal women is consistently documented in the epigraphic record. This is an aspect that has received very little attention in secondary works, thereby rendering this study a pioneering one. The work follows on from Rangachari's earlier Invisible Women, Visible Histories: Gender, Polity and Society in North India (7th to 12th century ad), which had focused on important gendered aspects of early medieval north India through an analysis of literary and epigraphic sources of Kashmir, Kanauj, Bengal and Bihar. The invisibilization of women, whereby their presence is routinely ignored or trivialized, was, similarly, its underlying essence.

Abstract: The R4 Rural Resilience Initiative enables rural communities to build their resilience in the face of extreme climate events. R4, formerly known as HARITA, is designed to increase smallholders` food and income security in drought-prone areas through a holistic risk management strategy. Operating in the northern Ethiopian region Tigray since 2009, R4 has reduced adverse impacts of climate shocks and stresses considerably. The initiative is currently implemented by Oxfam America (OA) and the World Food Program (WFP) in Ethiopia as well as in Kenya, Malawi, Senegal, Zambia and Zimbabwe. R4 comprises four programme components: risk reduction, risk transfer, risk reserves, and prudent risk taking. Taken together, they offer farmers access to index climate risk insurance and credit, improve natural resource management, and encourage savings. Farmers lacking sufficient funds to pay the insurance premium benefit from an innovative insurance-forwork approach. Instead of paying in cash they work in disaster risk reduction (DRR) projects in their community. The initiative reflects the global effort to enable the most vulnerable communities to better prepare for, respond to and recover from climate shocks and stresses. Climate extremes - becoming more frequent and intense as the climate changes - particularly threaten the well-being of rural populations engaged in smallholder agriculture. Extreme events such as heavy rains and droughts have a long-term effect on their income and food security. As this desk study shows, in Tigray, R4 can be con- sidered a good practice as it mitigates drought impacts on food and income security. It contributes to securing productive assets during droughts and increasing savings, loans as well as opportunities for income diversification during good seasons. Besides, R4 resulted to be particularly empowering for female farmers: They have become more food secure and managed to maintain and accumulate more productive assets than the control group. Moreover, female R4 farmers have been more prone to use credits and diversify their income sources.

Abstract: Iran has long been regarded as an international pariah state in some parts of the international community. However, its negative image in many countries disguises its history of tourism and rich cultural and natural heritage. Following the July 2015 nuclear deal and the reduction in sanctions, Iran is focusing on international tourism as a means to generate economic growth in addition to its substantial domestic tourism market. Given the significance of tourism in the Middle East and in international politics, as well as restrictions on international mobility, this volume brings together the first contemporary collection of research on tourism in Iran. Written by experts based both within and outside of Iran, the chapters engage with a number of crucial issues including the importance of religion, the role of women in society, sustaining Iran's cultural heritage, Iran's image and the resistive economy to provide a benchmark assessment of tourism and its potential future in a troubled political environment. The book will undoubtedly be of interest not only to those readers who focus specifically on Iran but also those who seek a wider understanding of Iran's role in the region and how tourism is utilised as part of national and regional economic development policies.

Abstract: While there have been studies of women's roles in African societies and of Atlantic history, the role of women in West and West Central Africa during the period of the Atlantic slave trade and its abolition remains relatively unexamined. This book brings together scholars from Africa, North and South America and Europe to show, for the first time, the ways in which African women participated in economic, social and political spaces in Atlantic coast societies. Focusing on diversity and change, and going beyond the study of wealthy merchant women, the contributors examine the role of petty traders and enslaved women in communities from Sierra Leone to Benguela. They analyse how women in Africa used the opportunities offered by relationships with European men, Christianity and Atlantic commerce to negotiate their social and economic positions; consider the limitations which early colonialism sought to impose on women and the strategies they employed to overcome them; the factors which fostered or restricted women's mobility, both spatially and socially; and women's economic power and its curtailment.

Abstract: Agriculture remains the main source of livelihood for most rural people in East Africa. Farming is dominated by smallholders, of whom the majority are women. Their tenure and access to land is important for reducing rural poverty, enhancing food security and stimulating agricultural development. Secure tenure represents one of the most critical challenges to the development of sustainable agriculture in the region. In an effort to understand the land question and its variation across the region, this book analyses the land reforms, their context and dynamics. The book presents recent studies on the dynamics of land tenure and land tenure reforms in East Africa with a focus on Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. By selecting these five countries, the book is able to show the changing practices and variations in the land tenure dynamics and explain how they relate to historical and more contemporary issues. The chapters are written by researchers, policy makers and activists with a diverse background and experience/expertise in relation to the land question. Their contributions offer a multiperspective basis for critical rethinking and reflection on the future of the land question in East Africa. (Umschlagtext)

Abstract: The book offers a glimpse back in time to a Middle Sepik society, the Iatmul, first investigated by the anthropologist Gregory Bateson in the late 1920s while the feminist anthropologist Margaret Mead worked on sex roles among the neighbouring Tchambuli (Chambri) people. The author lived in the Iatmul village of Kararau in 1972/3 where she studied women's lives, works, and knowledge in detail. She revisited the Sepik in 2015 and 2017. The book, the translation of a 1977 publication in German, is complemented by two chapters dealing with the life of the Iatmul in the 2010s. It presents rich quantitative and qualitative data on subsistence economy, marriage, and women's knowledge concerning myths and rituals. Besides, life histories and in-depth interviews convey deep insights into women's experiences and feelings, especially regarding their varied relationships with men in the early 1970s. Since then, Iatmul culture has changed in many respects, especially as far as the economy, religion, knowledge, and the relationship between men and women are concerned. In her afterword, the anthropologist Christiane Falck highlights some of the major topics raised in the book from a 2018 perspective, based on her own fieldwork which she commenced in 2012. Thus, the book provides the reader with detailed information about gendered lives in this riverine village of the 1970s and an understanding of the cultural processes and dynamics that have taken place since.

Abstract: The relationship between women and energy is more apparent in energy poor communities that use biomass fuel to meet their household energy needs. Women in energy poor communities often have the responsibility of suppling and using energy in their homes due to socially assigned roles such as cooking. A significant number of these women reside in rural areas and deal with the daily constraints of poverty. Hence, access to modern energy such as electricity is an asset that enables women to expand their livelihoods and social status. Micro-hydroelectricity generation is one of the innovative and sustainable ways of using natural resources to provide electricity access to remote and inaccessible communities. This study explores how access to electricity through a micro-hydroelectricity scheme has influenced the socio-economic wellbeing of women in Chipendeke village. Different methods of data collection were used during fieldwork. These include participant observation, interviewing, focus group discussions, free listing and pile sorting. The results show that, electricity access enables women to engage in or improve different livelihood strategies such as chicken rearing projects and refrigerating produce for sale. The value of these activities is evident in their ability to enable the financial independence of women and widen the net of sustenance for households within a rural agricultural based economy. Electricity also plays a major role in improving maternal health services at local clinics and women`s use of communication technologies such as cell phones. In addition, the lighting provided by electricity extends the domestic work hours of women. (Verlagsangaben)

Abstract: In Forging the Ideal Educated Girl, Shenila Khoja-Moolji traces the figure of the `educated girl` to examine the evolving politics of educational reform and development campaigns in colonial India and Pakistan. She challenges the prevailing common sense associated with calls for women`s and girls` education and argues that such advocacy is not simply about access to education but, more crucially, concerned with producing ideal Muslim woman-/girl-subjects with specific relationships to the patriarchal family, paid work, Islam, and the nation-state. Thus, discourses on girls`/women`s education are sites for the construction of not only gender but also class relations, religion, and the nation.(Umschlagtext)

Abstract: An ethnography of the development and travel of the New Zealand model of neoliberal welfare reform, this study explores the social life of policy, which is one of process, motion, and change. Different actors, including not only policy e´lites but also providers and recipients, engage with it in light of their own resources and knowledge. Drawing on two analytic frameworks of the contemporary anthropology of policy-translation and assemblage-Kingfisher situates policy as an artifact and architect of cultural meaning, as well as a site of power struggles. All points of engagement with policy.

Abstract: Structured to meet employers' needs for low-wage farm workers, the well-known Bracero Program recruited thousands of Mexicans to perform physical labor in the United States between 1942 and 1964 in exchange for remittances sent back to Mexico. As partners and family members were dispersed across national borders, interpersonal relationships were transformed. The prolonged absences of Mexican workers, mostly men, forced women and children at home to inhabit new roles, create new identities, and cope with long-distance communication from fathers, brothers, and sons.Drawing on an extraordinary range of sources, Ana Elizabeth Rosas uncovers a previously hidden history of transnational family life. Intimate and personal experiences are revealed to show how Mexican immigrants and their families were not passive victims but instead found ways to embrace the spirit (abrazando el espíritu) of making and implementing difficult decisions concerning their family situations - creating new forms of affection, gender roles, and economic survival strategies with long-term consequences. Abstract: Janet Afary is a native of Iran and a leading historian. Her work focuses on gender and sexuality and draws on her experience of growing up in Iran and her involvement with Iranian women of different ages and social strata. These observations, and a wealth of historical documents, form the kernel of this book, which charts the history of the nation's sexual revolution from the nineteenth century to today. What comes across is the extraordinary resilience of the Iranian people, who have drawn on a rich social and cultural heritage to defy the repression and hardship of the Islamist state and its predecessors. It is this resilience, the author concludes, which forms the basis of a sexual revolution taking place in Iran today, one that is promoting reforms in marriage and family laws, and demanding more egalitarian gender and sexual relations. Abstract: Poverty in developing countries is a result of various factors which affect people's well being. This study analyses parameters surrounding gender biased access to land in investigating the phenomena of poverty in Lindi district, south east Tanzania. Of particular importance are gendered rights of land use, access, ownership and control. In this study, gender as a tool of analysis has been used throughout and this has broadened the perspective of women's land rights in a village (rural) setting. Since Tanzania is an agrarian country, land can be considered as one of the fundamental factors in analysing poverty. While few people in rural Tanzania enjoy other modes of survival, for example wage employment, many Tanzanians are mostly engaged in farming activities. However, little is known about the increasing insecurity of women over land matters. Most of the country's land tenure systems give women access to land not in their own right. Their right is widely determined by their relationship with men, in particular as wives. In this sense, land tenure systems have affected women and men differently. Consequentially, the relative distribution of poverty between women and men differs significantly. The study addresses women's disadvantages in land matters and establishes a connection to their poor socio-economic situation. This study establishes a close relationship between marriage and women's land rights. This suggests that gender role is a major factor influencing women's land rights at household level. It has increased women's land tenure insecurity and hence increased their vulnerability to poverty. The main focus of this study is directed towards gender related aspects of land tenure rights. In addition, the study analyses the kind of land rights that societies in Tanzania (represented by the Nyangao case study) accord to women on their own capacity. Other specific objectives are: 1. to analyse local views on poverty 2. to assess the conditions under which women acquire and control land 3. to identify factors which either facilitate or constrain women's efforts towards poverty reduction as far as ownership and control over land is concerned in a male dominated socio-economic framework 4. to assess the gender division of labour and household decision making. The findings from this study shows that women's vulnerability to poverty in Nyangao village is a result of both socio-cultural and socio-economic factors. Those findings point to the fact that women heads of households in Nyangao village enjoy land tenure rights through allocation by the village government. Furthermore, the findings report that there is an increase in the number of female-headed households who were allocated land by their parents. This is contrary to the patriarchal orientation (currently followed by societies in south-east Tanzania) and poses a challenge to that system as it encourages the evolution of land transfers beyond patriarchially defined procedures. The study also reveals that the Nyangao women?s land holding status is threatened by the agrarian reforms as influenced by the Structural Adjustment Programmes (SAPs) and economic liberalization. In this, land allocation provided by parents which were beneficial to women especially single mothers are increasingly being threatened by land privatisation and commoditization. Furthermore the findings reveal that the relatively gender sensitive intra-household redistribution of land and the encouraging new direction (as obtained from the respondents views) towards equal inheritance rights between female and male children suggests that this may lead to the eventual creation of women's economic independence. Women's access and control over land may create welfare, efficiency, equity and empowerment. This is expected to reduce gender inequality which is an important mechanism for poverty reduction. This study is based on the qualitative and quantitative data, collected between August and December 2003. The primary emphasis is placed on qualitative data due to the nature of the study. Both primary and secondary sources of data collection were consulted. A case study of Nyangao village located in Lindi rural district, Lindi region, south-east Tanzania was selected and used as a source of primary data. The qualitative data were collected through Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), in-depth interviews, life histories and observation. The study also used structured questionnaires. A total of 180 sampled respondents from 180 sampled households were selected. While quantitative data was analysed by using the SPSS package, the qualitative data was manually processed and interpreted. (Verlagsangaben)

Abstract: This volume brings together new research on South Asia women who have renounced worldly life for spiritual pursuits. Documenting contemporary women's experiences with ethnographic narratives, this book offers feminist insights into Jain, Buddhist, Hindu and Baul ascetic traditions. With intricate narrative documenting contemporary women's experiences, contributors explore the lives of women who have renounced involvements such as sex, financial security, kin, and the pursuit of beauty, in favour of higher religious and spiritual ideals. The authors consider the hardship endured by women committed to religioos paths more commonly taken by men and warn against any easy romanticization of these womens's lives. At the same time, the book offers a refreshing antidote to the relentless image of South Asian women as dependent on male kins and defined by their secual and procreativesroles.

Abstract: The South Indian state of Kerala is well known for its progressive policy, high social indicators and comparatively high women's status. Processes of modernization, however, have had an ambiguous impact on women. This study of female cashew factory workers in Kerala combines meticulous historical investigation with anthropological research, including a wealth of in-depth interviews. The author traces changes since the 1930s in gender relations among low-caste men and women by examining processes of modernization in the organization of work, trade union activities, and ideologies regarding marriage and family life. Her main conclusion is that, although women have obtained better absolute conditions at work and in society, the power discrepancy between low-caste men and women has increased in favour of men because low-caste women have gone through a process of effeminization; they are now seen as weaker and more dependent on men than in earlier decades

(Verlagsangaben)

Abstract: The literatur on Africa is dominated by accounts of crisis, doom and gloom, but this book presents one or the few long-running success stories. Thomas Bassett, a distinguished American geographer well known in the field of development, tells an unsusual story of the growth of the cotton economy of West Africa, where change was brought about by tens of thousands of small-scale peasants farmers. While the introduction of new strains of cotton in francophone West Africa was in part the result of agronomic research by French scientists, supported by an unusually efficient marketing structure, this is not a case of triumphant top-down "plantification". Employing the case of Côte d'Ivoire, Professor Bassett shows agricultural intensification to result from the cumulative effect of decades of incremental changes in farming techniques and social organization. A significant contribution of the literature, the book demonstrated the need to consider the local and temporal dimension of agricultural innovations. It brings into question many key assumptions that have influenced develpoment policies during the twentieth century. (Umschlagtext)

Abstract: This collection of essays on the family in India by the distinguished sociologist Professor A. M. Shah covers a wide range of theoretical methodological, substantive and policy issues. Examining both academic and popular literature with a view to bringing about a clarity of discourse, Professor Shah's work challenges many popularly held beliefs about the family in India. Though an examination of census records, data collected in the field over long periods of time, and a clarifying of concepts and issues, Professor Shah shows how the widely accepted paradigm of change form joint to nuclear family is highly simplistic and pleads for a more realistic appraisal of change. Conceptually, Professor Shah distinguishes between "houshold" and "family" which leads to a richer and more precise discussion of inter- and intra-houshold family relations. The book includes chapters on spouse selection which place in a dynamic perspective, the traditional rule of caste endogamy as welll as the modern idea of freedom of choice in marriage. Also included is an essay on family policy wihch looks at such questions as family planning, care of the aged, the position of the girl child, and an uniform civil code.

Abstract: Theda Perdue examines the roles and responsibilities of Cherokee women during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, a time of intense cultural change. While building on the research of earlier historians, she develops a uniquely complex view of the effects of contact on Native gender relations, arguing that Cherokee conceptions of gender persisted long after contact. Maintaining traditional gender roles actually allowed Cherokee women and men to adapt to new circumstances and adopt new industries and practices. (Verlagsangaben)

(Umschlagtext)

Abstract: This volume consists of twelve contributions originally presented at the colloquium "Gender and Identity in Africa" held at the University of Bayreuth, Germany in July 1992. The colloquium was intended as a contribution to intercultural women's studies and concentrated on the question of how far women can shape their social lives without having to adhere to rules developed by men in their own interest. The papers dealt with a wide range of topics, such as the roles which women play in religion, politics, trade and as entrepreneurs, their portrayal in oral literature, identification with urban life, and their legal postion in the societies of western, eastern, and southern Africa.
