Abstract: This third D.A.F. volume publishes papers presented at the symposium on landscape archaeology, organised in 1982 by A. Ferdière and E. Zadora-Rio. Fieldwork and landscape studies have today entered more than ever into present archaeological thinking. Such studies are not now limited just to evidence from excavated sites, but to the surrounding natural and human environment, permitting the reconstruction of earlier landscapes. Fieldwork, now established as a discipline in its own right, enables the relationship between actual sites and exploitation sequences of their associated landscape to be better understood. Taking into account the theoretical and practical impossibilities of total fieldwork, speakers at this symposium, in both their communications and during discussions, presented different choices of objectives and methods, and analysed the strengths and weaknesses of each technique adopted

Abstract: This book is intended to fill a senous gap which bas become wider and wider with every year that passes : the absence of an easily accessible source of information about one of the most successful and flourishing enterprises of Roman Gaul. the terra siglata industry. The volume is a collective work by over forty different archaeologists Defined by a research team pi me CNRS, the work include two complementary sets of contribution: a series of 45 notices, each on dedicated to a particular workshop (some of the workshops have been extensively dug, others have only been prospected); a series of 15 reports, some address problems of general methodology and regional history, others are concerned with the relations with the workshops in Switzerland and the Rhine Valley. The major interest of this collection of papers is that it brings to us an up to date inventory of production sites (its predecessor dates from 1968). Its originality is to have established, for the first time, a uniform series of descriptions, one per workshop, covering a wide range of headings The same information is thus available for all the workshops in a form that allows valid comparisons to be made

Abstract: In this publication, Jacques Thiriot, a research worker with the CNRS, presents the results of the fieldwork carried out between 1972 and 1979 on the mediaeval grey pottery workshops of the Uzege and the Lower Rhone, in particular at Saint-Victor-des-Oules in the Gard (XIIth and XIIIth cent.) and Bollene in the Vaucluse (XIIIth cent.). During this work, a methodology adapted to the excavation and interpretation of the remains (ovens and buildings) was perfected, thanks to a rigorous technical analysis. It provided an exceptional insight into production methods in one of the largest mediaeval potter's workshops in south-east France. It has also completed typological data based on pottery found during excavations in user centres, not only in Provence but also in Languedoc. Apart from the subject, rarely dealt with for the mediaeval period, the originality of the work lies in the systematic use of geophysical prospection and scientific methods of dating and in the application of an ethno-archaeological approach which gives a better understanding of mediaeval pottery activities in the region

Abstract: In this book Patrice Brun critically examines the "Urnfield Culture" concept and the migration model that it implies. After reexamining the Paris Basin evidence, he presents a comparative study of closed finds from outside the region As a result, the traditional interpretation is rejected. Two clear breaks are evident in the development of material culture between the 13th and 7th centuries B.C. These breaks coincide with major socio-economic changes which. Far from being restricted to the Paris Basin, affect a large part of Europe. They also coincide with the transformations that led to the emergence of urban civilisations in Greece and Italy

Abstract: Relay-point on a roman road, the oppidum of Ambrussum is a major site concerning conditions and aspects of the romanisation in the region of Nîmes. Two houses with internal courtyards were already known and dated from the first century AD and form an insula of secteur I. Research conducted from 1976 to 1980 in secteur IV revealed a house of the same type with its dependancies. Following an analysis based on the conditions of implantation, occupation and abandonment, their architecture and distribution of the finds, these constructions appear to be an original expression of gallo-roman habitations. Situated in their local and regional contexts, they reflect the process of urbanisation and social differenciation, and of the village type exploitation existence
