    Abstract: Ruling Women is the first study of its kind devoted to an analysis of the debate concerning government by women in seventeenth-century France. Drawing on a wide range of political, feminist and dramatic texts, Conroy sets out to demonstrate that the dominant discourse which upholds patriarchy at the time is frequently in conflict with alternative discourses which frame gynæcocracy as a feasible, and laudable reality, and which reconfigure (wittingly or unwittingly) the normative paradigm of male authority. Central to the argument is an analysis of how the discourse which constructs government as a male prerogative quite simply implodes when juxtaposed with the traditional political discourse of virtue ethics. In Government, Virtue, and the Female Prince in Seventeenth-Century France, the first volume of the two-volume study, the author examines the dominant discourse which excludes women from political authority before turning to the configuration of women and rulership in the pro-woman and egalitarian discourses of the period. Highly readable and engaging, Conroy’s work will appeal to those interested in the history of women in political thought and the history of feminism, in addition to scholars of seventeenth-century literature and history of ideas

    Abstract: Is American society falling apart? Put this provocative question to people you know and you will encounter a disturbing number of affirmative answers. But beyond such emotional foreboding, how would one factually answer the question? In this book, Brian J. Jones poses the issue by first building a theoretically-based model of the guts of any living society-family, work, voluntary association and social networks. This model of social capital is then tested using some four decades of real-world data from the General Social Survey, the gold standard for modern survey research. This process here yields real answers about life in America. People are reallocating their commitments to family and work, to friends and neighbors. These changes are tied to Americans’ deepest motivations such as trust and happiness. Also unearthed are deep signs of societal divisions along the fault lines of education, marriage and race.     Abstract: This book examines how the shifts in the early 19th century in New York City affected children in particular. Indeed, one could argue that within this context, that “children” and “childhood” came into being. In order to explore this, the skeletal remains of the children buried at the small, local, yet politically radical Spring Street Presbyterian Church are detailed. Population level analyses are combined with individual biological profiles from sorted burials and individual stories combed from burial records and archival data. What emerges are life histories of children-of infants, toddlers, younger children, older children, and adolescents-during this time of transition in New York City. When combined with historical data, these life histories, for instance, tell us about what it was like to grow up in this changing time in New York City

    Abstract: This volume proposes a supplemental approach to interdisciplinary historical reconstructions that draw on archaeological and linguistic data. The introduction lays out the supplemental approach, situating it in the broader context of similar interdisciplinary research methods in other world regions. Engaging directly with debates on urbanisation, sustainability and utopia, it presents two detailed ethnographic case studies of inner urban Australian eco-communities in Adelaide and Melbourne. These novel responses to the ecological crisis - real social laboratories that attempt to manifest a vision of the ‘eco-city’ in microcosm - offer substantial new insights into the concept and creation of sustainable urban communities, their attempts to cultivate ways of living that are socially and ecologically nourishing, and their often fraught relationship to the capitalist city beyond. These studies also suggest the opportunities and limitations of moving beyond demonstration projects towards wider urban transformation, as well as exposing the problems of accessibility and affordability that thwart further urban eco-interventions and the ways that existing projects can exacerbate issues of gentrification and privilege in a socially polarised city. Amidst the challenges of the capitalist city, climate change and ecological crisis, this book offers vital lessons on the potential of urban sustainability in future cities

    Abstract: At a time of societal urgency surrounding ecological crises from depleted fisheries to mineral extraction and potential pathways towards environmental and ecological justice, this book re-examines ecologically unequal exchange (EUE) from a historical and comparative perspective. The theory of ecologically unequal exchange posits that core or northern consumption and capital accumulation is based on peripheral or southern environmental degradation and extraction. In other words, structures of social and environmental inequality between the Global North and Global South are founded in the extraction of materials from, as well as displacement of waste to, the South. This volume represents a set of tightly interlinked papers attempting to assess ecologically unequal exchange and to move it forward. Chapters are organised into three main sections: theoretical foundations and critical reflections on ecologically unequal exchange; empirical research on mining, deforestation, fisheries, and the like; and strategies for responding to the adverse consequences associated with unequal ecological exchange.     Abstract: Bruno Latour ist in den letzten Jahren zu einem der meistdiskutierten und einflussreichsten Autoren der Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften aufgestiegen. Er wird nicht nur rege gelesen und zitiert, mittlerweile schließen auch unzählige Forschungen an seine Schriften an und auch in der Lehre besitzt er bereits einen festen Platz in vielen Grundkursen und Überblicksvorlesungen. Weil zugleich aber kaum zu übersehen ist, dass die Vorbehalte gegenüber Latour immer noch groß sind, zielt die vorliegende Einführung darauf, zunächst die zentralen Motive und Konzepte dieses auf den ersten Blick immens heterogenen Werkes zu erschließen. Sie möchte den Weg in ein Denken bahnen, das dem eigenen Anspruch nach eine grundsätzliche Alternative zu eingespielten Ansätzen der Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften formuliert. Vor diesem Hintergrund muss man sich Latour - so die These des Buches - als einen überaus systematischen und kohärenten Denker vorstellen. Um dies aufzuzeigen, folgt die Einführung dem Werdegang seines Werkes und versucht die Kernannahmen herauszuarbeiten, die im Anschluss an die noch kaum erschlossenen Schriften aus der Dissertationszeit in den Wissenschafts- und Technikstudien sichtbar werden und die schließlich zur Entwicklung der Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie und zahlreichen allgemeinen philosophischen und soziologischen Beiträgen führen. Aufbauend hierauf werden schließlich die jüngeren Werke von Latour diskutiert, die sich in gesellschaftstheoretischer Absicht mit den Existenzweisen der Modernen oder wie in Kampf um Gaia mit der ökologischen Krise und den Möglichkeiten einer neuen Politik der Natur befassen. Die Zielgruppen Studierende und Lehrende der Soziologie, Philosophie, Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften. Die Autoren Dr. Lars Gertenbach vertritt seit Oktober 2017 die Professur für Politische Soziologie an der Universität Bielefeld und ist Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Universität Kassel.     Abstract: Since the 1990’s, a number of studies have documented a remarkable high and stable amount of popular engagement in civic organizations in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Often these countries have been considered deviant cases against the proliferating decline of social capital studies. However, despite great international interest in the Scandinavian region, the volume argues that the civil societies and the civic engagement of these countries remain poorly understood. Most interest in the Scandinavian welfare models addresses the balance between state and market, but under communicates the role played by civil society and popular engagement in associations and voluntary organizations. The contributions offer a coherent portrait of stability and change in formal and informal forms of civic engagement over the past 25 years as well as offering contextualized knowledge of the history and institutional design in which Scandinavian civil societies are embedded

    Abstract: Jan Brülle shows how poverty risks in Germany between 1992 and 2012 increased concentrated on those with low educational levels, in lower occupational positions, and with precarious employment careers, as the country’s welfare state failed to adapt to widening inequalities in households’ market incomes. Contrasting the German experience with Great Britain, where social transfers to low-income families in concert with favourable labour market conditions helped to reduce poverty between 1992 and the global financial crisis, he presents the most comprehensive comparative study on poverty trends in these two countries to date. Moving beyond a cross-sectional perspective on poverty, the author analyses why it became not only more frequent in Germany, but also more persistent in individual life-courses, and why faster exits have driven the decline in poverty in Great Britain.     Abstract: Shamanism is commonly understood through reference to spirits and souls. However, these terms were introduced by Christian missionaries as part of the colonial effort of conversion. So, rather than trying to comprehend shamanism through medieval European concepts, this book examines it through ideas that started developing in the West after encountering Amerindian shamans. Microbes and other Shamanic Beings develops three major arguments: First, since their earliest accounts Amerindian shamanic notions have had more in common with current microbial ecology than with Christian religious beliefs. Second, the human senses allow the unaided perception of the microbial world; for example, entoptic vision allows one to see microscopic objects flowing through the retina and shamans employ techniques that enhance precisely these kinds of perception. Lastly, the theory that some diseases are produced by living agents acquired through contagion was proposed right after Contact in relation to syphilis, an important subject of pre-Contact Amerindian medicine and mythology, which was treasured and translated by European physicians. Despite these early translations, the West took four centuries to rediscover germs and bring microbiology into mainstream science. Giraldo Herrera reclaims this knowledge and lays the fundaments for an ethnomicrobiology.     Abstract: Michael Tunç untersucht, inwiefern sich Prozesse des Zusammenwirkens der Differenzlinien Geschlecht, Ethnizität und Klasse bei ethnisch minorisierten Vätern/Vätern of Color (PoC) rekonstruieren lassen. Der Autor präsentiert aktuelle Begriffe, Ansätze und Ergebnisse der Männlichkeits- und Väterlichkeitsforschung. Für emanzipative Entwicklungen arbeitet er den Begriff der progressiven Männlichkeit aus, mit dem sich Spannungen zwischen hegemonialen und progressiven Deutungsmustern von Männlichkeit/Väterlichkeit migrantischer Männer/PoC angemessen analysieren lassen. Er stellt intersektionale rassismuskritisch-migrationsgesellschaftliche Ansätze vor und überträgt sie auf diversitätsbewusste Väterarbeit.     Abstract: Anna Becker untersucht anhand der Lebensführung hochqualifizierter Migrantinnen und Migranten idealtypisch die Herausforderungen, mit denen Menschen in Zeiten von Globalisierung, flexibilisierten Arbeitsmärkten und gestiegenen Mobilitätsanforderungen konfrontiert sind. Über die Analyse der Verortungspraktiken von beruflich Mobilen zwischen Entankerung und Wiedereinbettung zeigt die Autorin auf, wie sich soziale Beziehungen unter den Bedingungen von Mobilität, Temporalität und kultureller Vielfalt gestalten und welche Funktionen sozialräumliche Strukturen für lokale und transnationale Einbettung sowie für das Zusammenleben und gesellschaftliche Teilhabe erhalten.     Abstract: This book explores novel aspects of transnational family research through the study of Romanian transnational families. A range of topics are covered, including the impact of lodging type upon life strategies; understudied elements in transnational relationships; gender roles in transnational communication; multinational relationships; the role of polymedia in the formation of couples; and the lives of the children of Romanian transnational families. The author presents the experiences of ‘leavers’ as well as of ‘stayers’; of the ‘highly-skilled’ as well as the ‘low-skilled’; that of women and that of men - through individual testimonies and couple interviews.     Abstract: Die Beiträge des Bandes befassen sich mit Medialität und Digitalität als Faktoren eines aktuellen und tiefgreifenden sozialen Wandels.     Abstract: Dieser Band macht konkrete soziale Innovationen zum Gegenstand. Der Schwerpunkt liegt bei den Kommunen von Stadt und Land, sei es beim Carsharing oder bei der Bewältigung der zahlreichen Erscheinungsformen des demografischen Wandels, bei neuen Wohnformen oder Schulen als Innovationszentren.     Abstract: In diesem Text geht es um die Frage, wie Theorien der Psychodynamik zum Verständnis gesellschaftlicher Prozesse beitragen und was die dazu erforderliche Kooperation können muss.     Abstract: Das Ziel, das Dux mit der Untersuchung zur Moral verfolgt, ist, einsichtig zu machen, dass und wie sich die Moral als eine Form sozialer Vernunft aus einer Bedingungskonstellation der evolutiv erworbenen Verfassung heraus zu bilden vermochte und immer wieder zu bilden vermag. Man muss, das ist die Kernthese Günter Dux‘, die Moral unter den erkenntniskritischen Vorgaben der Moderne neu verstehen – anders als sie in aller Vergangenheit verstanden wurde. Dux macht deutlich, dass es zum Verständnis der Moral einer anderen Logik bedarf, nämlich einer prozessualen. Durch sie muss geklärt werden, dass und wie Moral sich mit der Vernunft in der Gesellschaft historisch-genetisch ausgebildet hat. Das erkenntniskritische Interesse an der Moral ist politisch motiviert. Wir sind mit den gesellschaftlichen Verhältnissen in eine Krise geraten. Das Problem ist der Markt. Er macht es unmöglich, der Gesellschaft eine von der Idee der Versöhnung bestimmte Welt als normatives Ideal zugrunde zu legen. Das Normative ist in die Strukturen der Gesellschaft eingelassen. Mit den Strukturen der Gesellschaft bedarf es deshalb der Kritik der Moral und einer trennscharfen Bestimmung der Gerechtigkeit. Auch sie stellt sich in der prozessualen Logik anders dar, als im philosophischen Denken von der Antike bis zu unserer Gegenwart. Der Inhalt · Eine andere Moral in einer anderen Welt.     Abstract: In der Rechtstheorie hält sich beharrlich die Frage nach der Legitimation der gesellschaftlichen Ordnung, nach der Legitimation des Rechts insbesondere. Auf der Suche nach ihrer Bestimmung sieht sich Dux mit der immer noch vorherrschenden Überzeugung in der Rechts- und Sozialtheorie konfrontiert, jede Form der Legitimation müsse einem Absoluten verpflichtet sein. Gegen diese philosophische Fixierung an Denkmodelle der Metaphysik macht Dux Front. In einem groß angelegten entwicklungslogischen Entwurf ist Dux bemüht, die Herkunft der absolutistischen Logik und deren Dekonstruktion in der Geschichte darzulegen. Sie ist, so sein Argument, von der Geschichte überholt und ideologisch geworden. Preisgegeben werden kann, so Dux, das Verlangen, die Sozialordnung zu legitimieren, nicht. Dux erachtet es für geboten, die Legitimation auf Gerechtigkeit zu gründen. Als Gerechtigkeit versteht er, dass jeder in der Gesellschaft die Möglichkeit findet, den Sinnanforderungen an die Lebensführung in der Moderne nachzukommen. Der Inhalt · Logik und Legitimation.     Abstract: Weltbildanalyse -- Gesellschaft als Lebenswelt und System -- Universalpragmatik -- Moralisches Bewusstsein.-Diskurstheorie -- Religion, Recht, Öffentlichkeit und die Frage nach dem Menschen in der postsäkularen Gesellschaft.
    Abstract: Die Untersuchung legt eine systematische neue Rekonstruktion der „Theorie des kommunikativen Handels“ von Jürgen Habermas vor. Sie erörtert im Kontext der klassischen Soziologie, der Soziologie der Gegenwartsgesellschaft, der Evolutionstheorie und Sprachtheorie die Probleme dieses Forschungsprogramms. Aus der Sicht der soziologischen Theorie ist dabei der Problembezug, die Folgeprobleme dieses Ansatzes zu erkennen und wie sie zu bearbeiten sind. Angesprochen ist damit der Problembezug der Grenzen der Innovationsfähigkeit dieses Forschungsprogramms. Das betrifft die grundlegende Fragestellungen der soziologischen Theorie in der postmodernen Gesellschaft und ihrer Evolution zur „nächsten Gesellschaft“, die alle Funktionssysteme z. B. der Wirtschaft, der Politik und des Rechts betreffen. Angesprochen ist damit aber auch, in welchem Ausmaß sich ‚unsere’ Verständigungsvoraussetzungen verändert haben, die einer erneuten Reflexion bedürfen, ohne den Anspruch zu erheben, damit die gesellschaftliche Kommunikation auf normativ erzwungene Zustände hin zu steuern.     Abstract: Die uns gewohnte Kunstwelt ist das Produkt historischer Prozesse. Ihr heute gegebener Zustand stellt einen Sonderfall der Kunstgeschichte dar. Die Beiträge des Bandes können dies beleuchten, indem sie der Gegenwart einen Spiegel vorhalten. Sie schlagen einen Bogen vom 16. Jahrhundert bis in die Gegenwart und behandeln gesellschaftliche Funktionen von Kunst im Feudalismus, in der frühbürgerlichen und der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft.     Abstract: This book presents a range of academic research and personal reflections on the Gorkha earthquake that struck Nepal in 2015. For the first time, perspectives from geography, disaster risk reduction, cultural heritage protection, archaeology, anthropology, social work, health and emergency response are discussed in a single volume. Contributions are included from practitioners and researchers from Nepal and Durham University in the UK, many of whom were in Nepal at the time of the earthquake. Evolving Narratives of Hazard and Risk explores the event of the earthquake, its consequences and its impacts, to provide a holistic and multi-perspective understanding of this special hazard and its significant ramifications for social, political, economic and cultural aspects of life in Nepal.     Abstract: Adoption in the Digital Age explores the transformation of adoption due to social and digital media technologies. The most prolific of these changes can be seen within contact arrangements, particularly those that are not managed by an intermediary, between adopted minors and their biological kin. Within this shift, it becomes clear that this often-breached contact arrangement lends itself towards discussions about further openness within adoption. At the same time these technologies continue to document the way adopted individuals and their biological kin feel about themselves and each other. It is for these reasons that the Internet remains both a promise and threat. Samuels explores this in detail, highlighting that what it means to be adopted continues to evolve in the context of networked media cultures.     Abstract: Annika Busch-Geertsema untersucht, inwiefern sich Mobilitätsverhalten und mobilitätsbezogene Einstellungen im Zuge eines Lebensereignisses ändern. Auf einer zwischen Psychologie und Geographie angesiedelten theoretischen Grundlage sowie mittels einer dreistufigen Panelbefragung von Studierenden, die im Befragungszeitraum ins Berufsleben eingetreten sind, werden mithilfe bi- und multivariater Analysemethoden Erkenntnisse zur (In)Stabilität der Verkehrsmittelnutzung und der Einstellungen herausgearbeitet. Weiterhin identifiziert die Autorin potentielle Faktoren, die im Zusammenhang mit dem Übergang ins Berufsleben stehen.     Abstract: Jacques Rancière gilt als einer der einflussreichsten französischen Philosophen der Gegenwart, in dessen gesamtem Werk immer wieder das Motiv der radikalen Kritik an der Sozialwissenschaft in Szene gesetzt wird. In dem Sammelband werden zahlreiche Denkmotive des französischen Philosophen aus einer genuin sozialwissenschaftlichen Perspektive aufgegriffen, weitergedacht und kritisiert, wobei in den einzelnen Artikeln konkrete Forschungsperspektiven mit Rancière entwickelt, methodologische Überlegungen im Anschluss an Rancière vorgestellt, gesellschaftstheoretische Reflexionen vor dem Hintergrund der Kritik des Philosophen unternommen sowie Aspekte seines politischen Denkens in die politische Theorie integriert werden. Aber auch sozialwissenschaftliche Kritik an der Philosophie Rancières findet in den Argumentationen der Autorinnen und Autoren ihren Platz. Somit bietet der Band ein breit gefächertes Spektrum an sozialwissenschaftlichen Anschlüssen an das Denken des französischen Philosophen.     Abstract: This book examines the gun-related policy responses to three school shooting incidents in the United States. Gun violence prevention activists and others involved in policy making were interviewed for the book, and news media articles and policy documents were critically assessed. As a result, interpretations of the Second Amendment are shown to affect the acceptability of certain gun restrictions. News media content and policy documents, coupled with the thoughts of activists, also give an indication of why certain policy measures passed and others failed at the time of each of the case studies.     Abstract: This book investigates the market-driven transformation of the higher education sector and the response given by the translation programmes in the UK and China, two vastly different social and economic contexts.
