    Abstract: "Die beste Nation ist die Resignation." Dieser Ausspruch wird dem österreichischen Dramatiker Johann Nestroy zugeschrieben, der seine Zeitgenossen im Wiener Volkstheater gern zum Lachen brachte. Was eine Nation ist, lässt sich jedenfalls gar nicht so einfach bestimmen. Vor allem in den stürmischen Zeiten, in denen wir uns derzeit befinden, wird Europa europaweit gern und schnell abgeschrieben und stattdessen wieder einmal die Nation oder der Nationalstaat beschworen. Was eigentlich ist die Nation? Vor allem aber: Wozu brauche ich meine Nation so unbedingt? Vielleicht hilft die Schneise, die dieser Text mit verschiedenen Definitionen durch den Nationen-Dschungel schlägt, die derzeit äußerst problematische Diskussion über Europa zu lichten. Vielleicht kommt man beim Lesen sogar zu dem Schluss, dass der europäische Integrationsprozess längst ein Prozess des Nation-Buildings und der europäischen Vergesellschaftung ist?
