    Abstract: In Spring 2004, Mohd Shirvani decided to answer an old question in his mind - What should I do if I, as a film director, would become blind? I was wondering if I could keep making films. This film has been made by a number of blind women filmmakers to answer that question. I taught them how to narrate their own stories through film language with small digital cameras and they also taught me how to see the world with my third eye on my forehead. The result of this experience is a feature episodic documentary 7 Blind Female Filmmakers.

    Abstract: Cemeteries are not only places for the dead. They are also spaces in which the living interact with each other-- and with the dead. "Cultivating Death" depicts the different ways in which bereaved people remember and commemorate their deceased family members and friends, by visiting and tending their graves at a Victorian cemetery in London. It is a common belief in the West that the bereaved have to 'let go' and 'get over the loss' of their deceased kin, in order to return to a 'normal' life. In contrast to these cultural norms, many survivors maintain strong social relationships with their dead. "Cultivating Death" portrays some visitors of Kensal Green Cemetery in West-London, as they actively sustain these continuing bonds by arranging and tending the graves of their deceased, talking to them and bringing them gifts. They thereby speak frankly about this important aspect of their mourning for which the cemetery constitutes a unique environment.

    Abstract: The last orthodox synagogue in Makó was renewed and inaugurated in 2002. The little temple, as they call it, is more than a hundred years old and represents the link between the Jews who emigrated from this town in the south-eastern part of Hungary. The various members of the community have built new lives elsewhere whilst holding on to the values of their cultural past. Scenes were shot on location in Israel, United Kingdom and the United States portraying the lives of the Jewish members of the ex community. The mood ranges from a poignant visit to the grave of the last Makó rabbi to a spirited traditional Chasidic wedding in Jerusalem; Hanukah in London, New York and Mako.

Another couple, whose son is a prize law student, glows with satisfaction. To insure his children's future, a peasant leaves his remote village to work in the quasi-legal urban job market. A farm family near Shanghai feels manhandled by the privatizing economy; they sacrifice to send their daughter to high school. CHINA 21 introduces otherwise anonymous people whose spark and initiative are changing their country.

In response, the Himba people mount a spectacular resistance campaign, which lasts seven years. The film traces a journey into the memory and landscape of the nomadic Himba people. Guided by their oral history and rich ancestral tradition they resist the development of the dam scheme. Confronted with the completeness of their existence, the film poses questions about first world development and our own fragmented modern world.

    Abstract: The Mughals are a middle class family of ten living in Quetta, one of Pakistan's most culturally conservative cities. The two eldest children, Ilyas and Yasmin, are celebrating their engagements during the same week. But the two could not be more different. Ilyas is following tradition and marrying a woman he has never met. His candid comments about his engagement offer insight into the often misunderstood custom of arranged marriage, but the fear on his young bride-to-be's face tells a story in itself. Yasmin, his sister, is determined to make her own decisions. University educated, she drives a car and pursues a career in a society where women need permission to leave their home.She has chosen her own fiance, although getting her family's approval was not easy. Sibling rivalry, disapproving neighbors and lively family debate punctuate this up-close look at a family undergoing social change.

    Abstract: This film examines the indigenous rights revolution sweeping Mexico through the municipal elections in Huehuetla, Puebla. In 1989, the Huehuetla Totonacs formed the Organización Independiente Totonaca (OIT), and joined in an electoral alliance with the Partido de la Revolución Democratica (PRD). For ten years the OIT and the PRD carried out a non-violent revolution. The visible signs of this Totonac renaissance are the health clinics, schools, roads, drinking water and electricity. But the real change is in the new self-confidence and pride of the Totonacs themselves. The camera follows Cruz Garcia, an "expatriate" Totonac, as he returns to his community.

    Abstract: During her summer vacation, Dawa returned to Lhasa to see her grandparents. Unfortunately her grandfather was ill and dying. During this time, her grandmother, Yixi Zhuoma, told Dawa her love stories with three men. The first man in Yixi's life was Jiacuo, a strong mule boy from Kangba. At the same time Gongsa, the young master of Luoga Garden, had fallen in love with Yixi. Jiacuo was not persuaded and eloped with Yixi and married her. Their marriage and Jiacuo's great energy brought Yixi a very happy and romantic time in her life. However, as a mule boy, Jiacuo was used to an unstable lifestyle, which drove Yixi back to Gongsa. During the 1950s, Gongsa fled with the Dalai Lama and took Yixi's youngest son with him, asserting that the son was his. In the meantime, Jiacuo could not tolerate Yixi's betrayal and decided to return to his hometown, Kongba, with his oldest daughter. Several years later, when Yixi got the news that Jiacuo was seriously ill, she immediately decided to begin her difficult and dangerous journey searching for her husband. During that difficult time, she met her old friend Songqiu Lama, who was her third man as well as her forever lover in her life. In their youth, they used to spend a lot of time together, and Songqiu taught Yixi how to write and sing. Unfortunately, they were separated after Songqiu became a monk. With the coming of the Cultural Revolution, Songqiu was forced to leave his temple and lived as an ordinary man again. This enabled him to accompany Yixi to continue her difficult journey. He also encouraged Yixi to return to her husband and he would like to go back to being a Lama again. Dawa sets out to find these men. Awards/Festivals: Won Golden Rooster for Best Music, Special Jury Prize for Acting and Directing, Nominated for Golden Rooster for Best Actress, Best Film, Best Screenplay 2000; Won Film of Merit and Best Director, Shanghai Film Critics Award 2000; Interfaith Award, St. Louis International Film Festival 2001.
