Abstract: Rereading Travellers to the East aims to offer a new perspective on travel literature, the question of nation-building and the history of orientalism. Rereading Travellers focuses on the rereadings to which early modern travel literature about Asia has been subjected by different actors involved in the political, economic, cultural and intellectual life of post-unification Italy. The authors highlight how this literature has been reinterpreted and reused for political and ideological purposes in the context of the formation and reformation of collective identities, from the Risorgimento to the Fascist regime and the early republic. By showing the potential of the notion of rereading, the volume outlines a history of the political and cultural legacy of travel literature which goes well beyond Italy

Abstract: In the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, during the emergence of the Italian communes, rural communities, increasingly populated and organised, imposed themselves as crucial actors in the relationship between city communes and rural lords, mostly thanks to the establishment of new local élites. The book offers a critical reassessment of this threefold dialectic in light of the rich documentation concerning Sabbion, near Cologna Veneta, in the eastern outskirts of the Veronese contado. This documentation has been preserved in the archives of San Giorgio in Braida of Verona, holder of the lordship over Sabbion, and enabled a detailed comparative analysis of the principal socio-economic and political changes of a small and relatively homogeneous society, its actions and agency

Abstract: This volume is the first one in a collection connected to the PRIN project on Ruling in hard times. Patterns of Power and practices of government in the making of Carolingian Italy. Its focus lays on bishops and their networks of relationships in late-8th and 9th-century Italy. The episcopal contribution to the inclusion of the Lombard kingdom in the Carolingian social and political landscape is especially analyzed from the perspective of the cultural exchanges (of ideas, texts, and manuscripts) that bishops created or used to carry out their public and pastoral duties. Each paper focuses on a specific episcopal figure or area, reconstructing the scope and extent of the relationships of which they were the pivot. The aim is to provide as comprehensive a picture as possible of the cultural networks that crossed Carolingian Italy and the ways in which bishops shaped and made use of them

Abstract: The main object of this book is a manuscript preserved in Rome but composed in Florence in the middle of the fifteenth century, which transmits a text that is nearly unknown and highly original for at least three reasons. Firstly, the subject matter: a description of the Camaldoli hermitage at a time when this place was highly appreciated. Secondly, the discursive genre: the description of a built landscape, influenced both by humanist ekphrasis and by the tradition of medieval figurative exegesis. Finally, the dedicatee of the work, who is no less than Peter son of Cosimo dei Medici. The book successively examines the medieval and modern tradition of this little work, the identity of its author and the milieu of its production and first reception, and finally the details - some of them completely new - of the description of the Camaldolese hermitage and their textual and figurative tradition. It concludes with a critical edition of the work and the glosses with which it was enhanced in modern times. It is therefore a contribution not only to the history of an important Tuscan monastic centre, but also to that of the cultural and political networks of Tuscany in the second half of the fifteenth century, as well as to the knowledge of the textual and iconographic genres of landscape and monumental description, and finally, in a certain way, of modern Tuscan scholarship

Abstract: 1938 in Italy is marked by the introduction of the racial laws which ejected Jews from schools and universities, preceding similar measures in Germany. The aim of the author is to illustrate the debates in parliament around the Day of Memory and on holocaust denial before dealing with the events of 1938, in order to underline their contemporary significance and to interpret them as linked and not separable. After showing the progress that has been made in terms of historical research and the difficulties that the political world has experienced in taking this work into account, the volume examines the losses in qualitative terms in Italian university teaching and the huge difficulties encountered by professors who had lost their posts and struggled to return to their former positions. The case of Florence is studied closely within the framework of the transformations to university institutions which took place during the Fascist period. The indifference or the silence of the intellectuals, including Gentile, is underlined

Abstract: The book discusses the experience of two Florentine travellers in the Levant from the 1760s to 1792. During their separate stays in Cyprus and in Istanbul they visited the Holy Land, Anatolia and Mesopotamia providing extensive reports on natural history, institutions, local customs and languages as well as data on the economy and the health conditions of the area. Their numerous printed works enjoyed remarkable success and were translated into French and other languages. The inquiry places the authors firmly within the European 'Republic of letters' and testifies to the growing interest for Islam and Ottoman power during the Enlightenment debate on the eve of the French Revolution

Abstract: Between the 11th and the 20th century, the monastery of San Miniato al Monte in Florence played a leading role in the religious and cultural life of the city. The volume analyses for the first time the historical and documentary evolution of this regular institute, famous almost only from the architectural and artistic points of view. The book focuses the period of the bishop's patronage in the 11th century, when the monastery and some of its members emerged in the context of the ecclesiastical reform, and continues with the study of the the Olivetan monks community, during the 14th-16th centuries, to arrive at the important structural and functional, but also semantic, transformations of the monument between the 18th century and the contemporary times

Abstract: By studying the archives of the feudal Lords of Southern Italian between the 14th-16th centuries you can understand the real nature of their power and how it was expressed. The volume, which takes into account the most recent historiography, relies on the study and inventory of important documentary collections held in the Archivio di Stato of Naples, such as the Sommaria (Relevi with the files for feudal succession; Dipendenze, I, Conti erariali dei feudi and Diversi, with the seigneurial account books acquired by the State of those lord who had been rebellious or had died without heirs). The authors deal also with the cartularies ('platee') of aristocratic dynasties as the Ruffo and the Sanseverino, based in Calabria, and with the parchments of the Albertini from Nola. Thanks to the rich information derived by these archival series and account books, the authors bring new light on the seigneurial powers, the typology of the records produced by and for the Lords, the administration of their estates, the strategy for elaborating the family memory

Abstract: Rural lordship is one of the classic medieval themes of recent decades, but its specific developments of the late Middle Ages have long been neglected by research, especially engaged in considering other processes in these centuries, such as the construction of regional states, the economic dynamics, the urban riots. This volume, as part of a large research project coordinated by Sandro Carocci, intends to help fill this gap by offering a wide sample of cases, relating to very different areas of the Italian peninsula. Local realities are investigated here from a very specific perspective, that is, in their strictly political dimension: while taking into account the broad contexts (economic, settlement and social) in which the rural lordships are located, the main questions of this volume focus on forms of the lordly domain and its relations with the subjects, with the regional states and with the other lordly powers

Series Statement: Europe in between. Histories, cultures and languages from Central Europe to the Eurasian Steppes
Keywords: History: earliest times to present day
Abstract: This book is a synthesis of the great migrations of the 6th-13th centuries, focused on the median space between the two extremes of the Eurasian continent: Western Europe and Eastern Asia. In the light of the sources, it aims to reassess the complexity of the relationships between the nomads of the steppes and the sedentarized societies that came into contact with them. The choice to focus on the Qïpčaq-Cumans is due to their history, unique because they never constituted an organized and centralized center of collective power (stateless nomads); and paradigmatic, because it encompasses all the constitutive elements of steppe nomadism: social heterogeneity, mobility, military preparation, attraction for trade and willingness to negotiate. The migrations of the nomads of the steppes and their arrival close to the great organized communities of the Islamic and Christian world, from Asia to Europe, contributed to triggering a process of integration between Asia and the Mediterranean basin, a process that the Mongol invasion and conquest completed, giving birth to a new shared global space

Abstract: Against the backdrop of a critical reflection on the psychiatric concepts of organicism and predisposition to mental illness, the research investigates the relationship between psychiatry and the Great War from a perspective that considers the complexity of the orientations assumed by both the Italian alienists on war pathologies and the health practices implemented towards soldiers. The study highlights the comparison/clash between two totally different approaches forced to coexist during the conflict: on one side, the one from military psychiatry, and on the other the distinctive one from civil asylums. The two perspectives were not always clearly separated, but it is possible to detect a constant tension between the duties towards the war effort and the professional ethics dictated by the neuropsychiatric discipline

Abstract: The Bayeux Tapestry (or rather, embroidery) is one of the most famous medieval artworks, which narrates in images the conquest of England by the Normans led by Duke William the Conqueror. Images taken from the embroidery are reproduced on thousands of objects evoking the Middle Ages, and at the same time the work has been the subject of hundreds of studies in many European countries, by historians, art historians and narrative scholars. In all of this, some questions and some answers are lacking, in particular with regard to the political culture expressed in the work: there is no doubt that the embroidery is a narrative of the exploits of William the Conqueror, an attempt to reconcile the English and Normans and in part an exaltation of the role of Odo, bishop of Bayeux; but it is also the expression of a series of political ideals and models of order, a reading and an evaluation of the system of contemporary power, organized around the kingdom and based on the primacy of the aristocracy and the value of personal ties. The volume aims to follow this line of research, showing how the embroidery, from many points of view (the political ceremonial, the role of the king, the aristocratic bonds of fidelity), reflects a social imaginary and a series of clearly recognizable political ideals

Abstract: Inaugurated in Florence in 1922, the "Fiorentina Primaverile" was an important exhibition of Italian contemporary art, conceived by the writer Sem Benelli. This exhibition remains unique to Florence because of the number (more than three hundred) and the importance of the participants (from Andreotti and Wildt, to Conti and Bacci; from macchiaioli masters like Lega and Signorini to the young artists of «Valori Plastici») as well as for the moment when it took place: a fruitful period for artistic events, like the great exhibition of the Italian Paintings from the 17th and 18th Centuries. Analyzing the archival documents of the exhibition, that have been unpublished until now, this text aims to reconstruct in a historical and critical manner, for the first time, the "Fiorentina Primaverile", in order to identify the true nature of the exhibition and, most of all, which kind of idea of Italian contemporary art was intended to be offered to the public

Abstract: In the middle decades of the 19th century (also known as the "History century"), the archives opened to historical research in Italy as well, starting to raise new awareness on the importance of documentary sources from the Medieval and Modern Ages. The network of State Archives was organised gradually; however, before and after the Unification of Italy, cities, "municipal" scholars and their networks of relationships, as well as city archives and institutions, remained a dominant element. Using classification essays and a series of researches on individual citizen contexts from the whole Italian Peninsula, this volume explores the variety and richness of this transformation, in the country's centre and in the suburbs

Abstract: The objective of the thesis was to illustrate the trajectory of Iranian nuclear crisis from the origins of the nuclear program to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly referred as the nuclear deal. The guiding thread was the concept of "nuclear ambiguity", which was addressed in the following terms: the civilian-military application of the atom constituted the primary source and was further exacerbated by several loopholes in the non-proliferation regime; Teheran exploited both sources and developed a large program with possible military dimensions. The JCPOA attempted to break this trend by limiting Iran's program only to peaceful goals and by creating an unprecedented inspection mechanism. In other words, it attempted to go beyond the previous history of ambiguity

Abstract: What happened to the university teachers who were expelled after the racial laws of 1938? And what about the more numerous and less known unstructured scholars who were suspended from service? What did the students who were denied university enrolment or the new graduates with no prospects for their future do? The university archives tell us nothing about this; the general aim was for scholars and students who were declared of "Jewish race" to be cancelled and forgotten. It was not a small number of them who decided to leave Italy. What were their paths and help networks? How were they treated abroad? How much did Italian culture suffer from those losses? After the war, did universities try to restore them? The expatriates who returned could have brought new knowledge and ideas, but many never returned. Why? By focusing on the relevant case of Florence, the volume investigates the minimized phenomenon of intellectual emigration for political and racial reasons. A recent past in need of consideration and reflection

Abstract: Lucca occupies a special place in the history and historiography of the early Middle Ages in Italy and Europe. It was the heart of a political body of the Carolingian galaxy, namely the marque of Tuscia, which enjoyed exceptional success and remained vital throughout most of the 11th century. It is also one of the areas most accounted for in sources: the documentation on the Lucca area starting from the beginning of the 8th century is extraordinarily conspicuous and continuous. Hence the choice of this case study, to reflect again on overall historical transformations. This book starts from a systematic research on the documentary sources of Lucca, so wide that they are still largely unexplored, and aims at reconstructing the fundamental parameters that governed the functioning of a court society, and at following its transformation processes up to the noble and chivalric age. At the centre of the investigation lies the social segment which gradually assumed aristocratic features and a more defined profile of distinction, and promoted the foundation of castles in the countryside as well as the formation of territorial areas on which to exercise powers of command and coercion

Abstract: Giovanni di Pagolo Morelli's Ricordi, long known to historians, are published here for the first time in an integral version which is also linguistically faithful to the original manuscript. This new critical edition is accompanied by a long introductory essay on the author, the intentions of his work and the results it had by the heirs to whom it was addressed. The 74 years of Giovanni Morelli's life, from the 1370s to the mid 1440s, are placed in a decisive time span for the history of Florence, and they are marked by a strong social mobility of which the Morellis, a family with humble origins, were the protagonists. Reading the Ricordi, and combining them with the analysis of the substantial remaining documentation borne by the author and his family, help understand the strong push to social rise which animated Morelli, and the reasons for his descendants' position among Florence's prominent family scene of the late 15th century

Abstract: What was the Roman Inquisition? How did inquisitors operate in the Italian society of the 16th and 17th century? In an attempt to answer these questions, the author analyses the inquisitors' familia , the Court of Faith's large group of assistants. In the light of rich unpublished records, this research is the first to reconstruct the events around the Holy Office's "staff", which consisted of vicars, notaries, lawyers, consultants, policemen, bodyguards and many others. The publication deals with the issues related to these officers, their geographic distribution and the brotherhoods used for their classification. Following this, the analysis shifts to the privileges enjoyed by the members of these "families", and the often heinous abuses they committed, demonstrating how the Inquisition became an element of social and moral disorder whenever its authority was questioned

Abstract: This volume reconstructs Carlo Livi (1823-1877)'s biography, focusing on his medical and psychiatric work and on his path as a man and intellectual who lived during the Italian Risorgimento. Livi was a key figure in Italian psychiatry, halfway between the therapeutic optimism of the early 19th century and the pessimism of post-Darwinian psychiatry, both in the practical aspects and in the theoretical elaboration. The study highlights how, in this case, the moral treatment applied by 19th century psychiatry throughout Europe is linked to the events of the Italian Risorgimento. The moralizing and educational request, as well as the anthropological study of the human being, were aimed at the sick, the insane, at children, at criminals and the Italian people in order to carry out a national and secular project of social regeneration in Italy

Abstract: During the Modern Age centuries, thousands of individuals were captured by pirates in the Mediterranean Sea and were enslaved in the land of the 'unfaithful: after being taken as prisoners, they were sold, forced to hard labour and rowing in the galleys or destined for redemption. Institutions, city judges and religious orders were involved in the redemption of Christians in the land of Islam, including the Mercedarians. This book reconstructs the history and activity of this Order and other protagonists of that activity in Italy and the Iberian Peninsula. After studying the books of redemption accounts sent to North Africa between the late 16th century and the early 18th century, the author shows how even religious men followed the orders of political power, and how that charitable activity ended up surrendering to economic and national interests

Abstract: The theme of the relationship between Verbum and ius, between faith, natural law and positive law, was the core of an intense debate during the Middle Ages. It was not restricted to the centres of knowledge; on the contrary, the ecclesiastical entrusted it to pastoral practices with the aim of having a concrete influence on the drafting of religious, civilian and state laws and regulations. The essays collected in this volume focus on that debate, investigating mainly the preaching and preachers who turned the erudite speeches by exegetes, theologians, jurists and magistri on the concepts of law, community and faith into "public communication"

Abstract: Idalberto Targioni (1868-1930) was a foundling, peasant, worker, extemporaneous poet, union activist, anti-militarist, socialist and mayor, interventionist and early fascist, man of the regime and lastly a penitent. A controversial figure and protagonist of his time. This volume, through the reorganization of the unpublished papers, the drafting of the archive's consistency list (published here) and the examination of other sources, offers an articulated reconstruction of the life of a significant figure in the Kingdom of Italy. Targioni's story sheds new light on the life of foundlings, peasant culture and socialist municipalism, on the conversions to war and the passages to Mussolinism, on the dynamics within the regime, the contact between public and private dimensions in the biographies of Contemporary Italy

Abstract: L'Essai sur la Monarchie autrichienne en son état actuel en 1790 offers a complete and unprecedented overview of the conditions of the Hapsburg monarchy on an international levell at the beginning of the French Revolution. This essay is addressed at a non-specialist reader, likely identified with future emperor Francis II's betrothed. It examines the institutional, economic, military and religious context of the monarchy, establishes its historical and political legitimacy and suggests a disenchanted evaluation of the emperor Joseph II's work shortly after his death. On the whole, it represents an exceptional testimony to the processes taking place in the heart of Europe in an era of dramatic changes

Abstract: In the late Middle Ages, Italy was one of the most urbanized areas in Europe. Its coasts, the Apennines, the perialpine area and the plains were all home to a large number of smaller towns, lands, villages, castra, and 'quasi cites'. These settlements were all very diverse in terms of demographic consistency, social articulation and economic dynamism, but together they constituted a characteristic and constitutive element of the Italian historical identity: an 'original personality'. This volume, thanks to some framing essays and a mapping of individual cases involving most of the northern, central and southern regions, aims at investigating the active research on this topic over the last thirty to forty years

Abstract: Summer of 1968: two young Spaniards arrive in Rome with a letter and a project to export. They are Francisco (Kiko) Argüello and Carmen Hernández. So, fifty years after its foundation, the Neocatechumenal Way begins, and this volume is among the first historiographical researches about it. The overall picture arising from the comparative analysis of archival documents and unpublished texts places the Neocatechumenal Way within the historical events that affected the Church of Rome from the end of the Second Vatican Council to the present today. From the study of a minor reality, the work aims at shedding light on more general questions: from the reception of the Second Vatican Council to the relations between the episcopates; from the publication of the New Dutch Catechism to the organized entrance of laymen and laity in the Church; from the liturgical reform to 'liturgical liberalism'

Abstract: This volume collects ten essays on the expansion of the public government of economy during Fascist corporatism. Some of the texts deal with the problematic relationship between intellectuals (such as Luigi Einaudi, Attilio Cabiati, Ugo Spirito, Nino Massimo Fovel) and Mussolini's dictatorship. Other essays discuss with a critical eye the fiscal policy choices of the period and the different aspects related to the public finance reform. Some authors then investigate the relationship between administrative law and corporate law, offering a precise commentary of the two 1939 Italian laws on the protection of the landscape and artistic heritage. The volume on the interchange between Italian and German economic thought from 1918 to 1945 occupies a relevant place within the main volume, and so does the one written by Sabino Cassese: the author, starting from his several studies, reflects on the general sense of the historical event of Fascism

Abstract: In the central centuries of the Modern Age, Latin was the official language of the Church of Rome, but from the analysis of papal edicts and decrees, it emerges that Vernacular was preferred as common language. While opposing the Lutheran doctrine, which favoured to the use of vernacular both in the Scriptures and in the liturgy, and keeping the knowledge of the mysteries of the faith only for those able to understand Latin, Italian bishops and inquisitors used vernacular to transmit papal edicts and conciliar decrees. What topics required complete understanding? Was there loyalty to the originals, or were the margins of interpretation exploited to contain the repressive hold imposed by the post-Tridentine papacy?

Abstract: The subject of this work is the morphosyntactic analysis of a corpus of Latin documentary papers which were written in the centre and the north of the Italian peninsula between the 7th and the 8th century. The study focuses on the competition, in the nominal phrase, between synthetic and analytical encoding of the dependent name, which is the result of the grammaticalization process of the phrase starting by the preposition "de", which in the Romance phase replaced the genitive case. This change is interpreted on a semantic basis, making use of the functional domain of possession. The volume also analyses nominal morphology which, although characterized by polymorphism and inconsistency, manifests phenomena such as the levelling of random oppositions and the reconstruction of inflectional paradigms, two inverse processes which find their cause in the principle of animacy

Abstract: This volume reconstructs the professional biography of a notary from Trento named Antonio di Bartolasio da Borgonuovo between the end of the 14th century and the first decades of the 15th century. The volume retraces his social ascent, with his entrance in Trento's ruling class of the early 15th century and the advantageous marriages of his daughters with members of the powerful Calepini family, as well as his professional ascent, which would lead him to work for the most important institutions of the city (from the Episcopate to the Municipality of Trento) and to be the trusted notary of the Cathedral Chapter for over forty years. His biography and his modus operandi constitute, given the quality and quantity of the documentation he produced, a significant case study to draw a picture of the late medieval notaries in Trento

Abstract: In the 18th century, the relationship between the male and the female became particularly relevant and turned into an excellent test bench within the construction process of the individual's identity. Many are the images connected to the genre. Likewise, the self-representation processes through which the subjects read, describe and project themselves in their own existential context are complex and articulated. Twenty-three essays on different disciplines (history, literature, philosophy, figurative arts, science, music and theatre) explore the eighteenth-century dialectics between the two principles, using updated and specific methodological approaches. From the whole of the investigations, a complex picture with its ambiguities emerges. In it, he categorisations are continually renegotiated both in terms of intellectual elaborations and social practices

Abstract: The volume deals with an uncommon theme in medieval history: the prison and its inhabitants. In the medieval prison, the prisoners - waiting for their sentence, or imprisoned for debts, or because socially dangerous or found guilty of a crime - were not abandoned to themselves; families, the Church, devout lay people and public authorities took charge of their needs. In the case of Milan, the prison system and the relationship between prisoners, justice and mercy takes on particular nuances. Prisons (including private ones) are numerous and scattered throughout the city: the largest is a prison-hospital, which certainly imprisons, but suggests that it is useful (for economic reasons) to help the survival of the offender and their return to society. The citizens of Milan in the 15th Century are also aware of the risks of abandoning prisoners (men and women) to a justice that, for its costs, only protects the strongest. Here are the Protectors of prisoners: useful not only to the weak ones in prison, but also to the Dominus, who supports them. The duke, interested in correcting the system excesses, is also (and perhaps above all) eager to show himself merciful, and as such superior to the law. Investigating the condition of prisoners thus proves to be a way to grasp not only the dynamics of social exclusion and inclusion relevant to the control of deviance, but also the mechanisms of relationship between rulers and subjects in the late Middle Ages

Abstract: As in a journey back in time, the stages of the first tournées of Italian actors in Russia in the 18th Century are retraced. By studying the translations of comedies and musical interludes, staged in St. Petersburg from 1731 to 1738, the practices of the first Italians who trod the stages of Tsarina Anna Ioannovna are rediscovered. Through the translation of the repertoire that has come down to us, the author reconstructs the traces of the Commedia dell'Arte and of the life and works of a handful of interpreters ready to face dangerous journeys in order to obtain gains and honors. The research, conducted on printed documents and primary archival sources, also based on the previous studies of Starikova and Ferrazzi, devotes particular attention to the biographies of the interpreters

Abstract: The volume reconstructs the role of the "art objects" in the renewal of identity (social, political and cultural) of the Mannelli family, among the oldest families of the Florentine patriciate. During the 17th Century the main exponents adopted a lifestyle inspired by the Medici court, gradually dismantling, but at different times, the dress of the merchant. The analysis of the main town and countryside residences and of the displaying of the objects of art, conducted on a documentary basis and with the "display of art" critical tools, returns the fundamental stages of the renewal process and, together with numerous autonomous episodes of unpublished patronage and collecting, the emergence of common narrative strategies of historical and political identity through art objects

Abstract: The theme of written communication is the red thread linking all the historical essays collected here. However, it does not concern the study of the specific channel or of its history, but rather the methods used to create writings or editorial initiatives, for the achievement of specific objectives. Writing and publishing are the two poles around which the various contributions revolve, whose features respond to a project aimed at probing the intention underlying the work of authors and publishers engaged in transmitting not only news, but above all contents: from religious to cultural, literary, scientific, political, or propaganda. The aim is the one of trying to read European History through a lens supporting the trends of the contemporary world, reflecting opinions, strategies and communication methods developed in different eras, so as to arouse interest around aspects of past realities which reveal new historical processes

Abstract: The oldest translation in a modern language (vulgarization) of Caesar's commentaries, published in 1438 by Pier Candido Decembrio and dedicated to Filippo Maria Visconti and Inigo d'Avalos, is published for the first time in a critical edition. The text is presented by a rich introduction, which provides a detailed overview of the work, with particular regard to the dedications that accompany it, the style of translation and the Latin exemplar used by the humanist, recognized in a code of the Sächsische Landesbibliothek in Dresden, which, already severely damaged during World War II, was restored at the request of the author of the research at the Government of Saxony, revealing the exceptional ecdotic revision made by the Decembrium on the corpus Caesarianum. The online edition of the volume is accompanied by a special appendix to the philological introduction, which includes all the errors and lessons of the manuscripts that have passed on the vulgarization

Abstract: The purpose of this book is to explore the transformations in the functioning of power in the countryside of the kingdom of Italy over the fifty years at the turn of the 1100s, and more particularly the process of affirmation and crystallization of the rural lordship. The investigation develops through the reconstruction not only of the structures of power over men and space, and of the related social morphologies, but also of the political communication system at the local level. The outbreak of the civil wars connected with the "struggle for the Investitures", after 1080, translates into a clear reconfiguration of the socio-political matrix, transforming both the practices of local power, and the instruments of political communication and the related documentation. The Italian case offers in this sense a new perspective on the great and still open historiographic problem, of the "feudal revolution" in the European context

Abstract: The volume is the result of the research project Claustra. Atlas of female spirituality. The book deals with the analysis of the religious landscape marked by the communities of the Poor Clares and Dominicans nuns. The investigation of the territorial structure of the various kingdoms takes place through five paths: knowledge of poorly studied areas in female monastic topography; understanding of foundational dynamics and the role of communities of religious mulieres; the dynamics of the urban layout and the processes of communication and action that created the monastic landscape; the importance of patronage and female sponsorship in foundational models and cultural promotion; the analysis of devotional practices and the material culture of communities in a functional, spatial and performative context.

Abstract: This publication concerns the history of the Tuscan Capuchin convents since their foundation in the 18th century, analysed through the transcription and critical edition of a manuscript written in 1704 by Filippo Bernardi da Firenze (1649-1721). It is a source of great interest both for considering the events happening in the convents, and more generally for the history of Tuscany itself. In fact, the manuscript collects numerous transcribed documents - dating from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century - whose originals are now partially lost. Through these testimonies it is possible to retrace the events of the Tuscan communities and obtain numerous information of a social, anthropological and cultural nature. The manuscript is preceded by a historical introduction to the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin and by the biography of Filippo da Firenze

Abstract: The volumes on the Great War that are here published are the result of a series of seminars held at the Department of Political and Social Sciences of the University of Florence between 2014 and 2015. Starting from the occasion of the centennial, the authors wanted to take stock of some specific aspects of the studies related to the First World War. To this purpose, historians, military analysts, political scientists and sociologists have questioned the meaning of the fracture that marks the beginning of the twentieth century and, consequently, the basic aspects of the new policy of the "short century", from both an Italian and European perspective

Abstract: The diffusion of Kantian philosophy in the Russian culture was a singularly early event: even the Orthodox ecclesiastical Academies were involved in this process, despite the control exercised by the censorship in defense of the metaphysical and theological tradition. The history and sources of the "philosophy of ecclesiastical academies" are also examined through the analysis of the works of two authors (I.Ja. Vetrinskij and P.D. Jurkevic), who, with their reaction to the Kantian "revolution", attested to the deep awareness of the necessity of a real confrontation with criticism. This investigation is completed by an appendix dedicated to the complex events of Kantian studies in the Russian language during the decades marked by the Soviet regime

Abstract: This book constitutes a study of the lexicon of cereals as witnessed by the Mycenaean inscriptions. The study focuses both on the nouns used to designate cereals, on their compounds and derivatives, and on the terms with which they relate (adjectives, theonyms, toponyms, etc.). The volume is divided into three chapters. The first chapter analyses the six Mycenaean terms together with their derivatives and compounds - phonetically transcribed - which designate cereals or include their names: wheat, barley, wheat flour, barley flour, bakers (= those who bake bread) together with others nouns belonging to the same semantic field, such as seed. The second chapter focuses on three Mycenaean logograms designating cereals: *120, *121 and *129, interpreted respectively as wheat, barley and flour. The third chapter describes the wide set of terms appearing contextually in the inscriptions in which cereals are attested, and groups them according to their meaning: human and divine recipients, toponyms, adjectives, other administrative terms, etc. Finally, the conclusions present an overall assessment of the data analysed in the previous chapters, that is an assessment affecting the economic, political, social and religious sphere of the Mycenaean civilisation

Abstract: A long eighteenth century - on the footsteps of the erudite tradition and of the Muratori's publishing method - and a very short nineteenth century, enclosed between the first post-unification decade and the threshold of the Great War, when the advent of a new and professionalised generation of scholars (Bonelli, Vittani, Torelli, Manaresi) would also impose a radical change in Lombardy in the field of palaeographic-diplomatic research. These are the coordinates (of a conceptual rather than a chronological nature) of the book, which for the first time analyses a significant period of medieval history under a historiographic perspective and retraces the careers, projects, the initiatives of the individuals and institutions that have animated that epoch. The editors and the editions of medieval documents coming from Lombardy are at the heart of the publication, although wider perspectives and many protagonists whose fame goes beyond the borders of regional culture revolve around them. The process of defining a modern diplomatic philology in the editions of Lombard sources is followed, marking its salient stages and turning points. However, in the background stand out the broader (as well as stronger and ideologically connoted) themes of Medieval studies before and after the Unification of Italy. These are the issue of the Longobards, the myth of the Commune civilisation in the Risorgimento culture, the identity of the Visconti-Sforza state. Analysing the editors and the editions of medieval documents in Lombardy between the nineteenth and twentieth century means shedding a significant light on the very dynamics of the organisation of regional historical research. Such analysis moves within a lively debate offering scientific and cultural implications between the hegemonic Milanese centre and the sometimes riotous municipalisms of the many suburbs

Abstract: The bibliography proposed takes into account the historiographical works on Middle Ages (VI-XV centuries) of the years 1950-2010: these are years particularly significant for the development and consolidation of studies relating to Italian (and more generally European) agricultural history. In order to facilitate the consultation, the work is organized into chapters and thematic sections, preceded by a brief explanatory note which gives an account of the criteria used to identify the listed works. The Introduction presents thoughts on the salient moments of the historiographical history at the heart of the contemporary discussion

Abstract: The region crossed by the upper course of the Tigris River, in south-eastern Turkey, has long been an area little known from an archaeological point of view. The intensification of field research, starting from the nineties of the last century, has produced the evidence on which to base a first reconstruction of the history of the settlement and of the material culture of these territories, located between the high Anatolian-Eastern lands and the Mesopotamian plains. The results of the excavations and field surveys indicate that between the end of the Ancient Bronze Age and the beginning of the Middle Bronze Age a process of transformation and reorganisation of the local communities matured. The appearance of large architectural complexes and buildings in medium-small sites, characterised by particular sets of objects and red-brown ceramics, could reveal the development of socio-political realities more structured than those of the previous period. Moreover, this could be an expression of the Khurrite world which, according to historical studies, would locate one of its main settlement areas in the Tigris region

Abstract: Investigating the contacts between Italians and Irish over the decades separating the two world wars is like opening a small Pandora's box, creating a lively and unexpected portrait of the great number of political and cultural exchanges between two countries. Italy has always been an important cultural and spiritual reference point for Ireland; Ireland, on the other hand, has exerted a particular appeal among the Italians, appearing as a distant and mysterious place, a country of saints and heroes. Two geographically distant yet culturally close nations, whose plurality of relationships are interesting to investigate and deepen. This work brings to light an unexpectedly rich picture of a small world of passions and entanglements, of patriotism and opportunism, uniting two countries which have always been tormented by the same complex: being on the edge of political games in Europe

Abstract: The book analyzes the first three decades of the life and activities of the Deputazione di storia patria per le Venezie, with special focus on its editorial policies. The study also aims to investigate the content and methodologies of medieval studies in Venice and Veneto; the cultural orientation of the Deputazione; the organization's role in establishing liaisons between the central body and the individual municipal traditions; the relationship with the research institutions of the Kingdom of Italy, and the significance of studies on the Middle Ages and medieval sources in the formation of a national identity; and, lastly, the Society's commitment to promoting and popularizing the local sources and its efforts to define a method for publishing them

Abstract: In recent decades, European historiography has actively dealt with the history of the body, thus giving depth and awareness to powerful stimuli coming from the dominant culture in the affluent society. Therefore, object of research has been not only the 'beautiful' body, but also the body of the common man, mutilated, deformed and imperfect. Through surveys in legal-regulatory, registry, iconographic, literary sources and in medical and physiognomic treatises and thanks to the participation of some of the major international specialists in the field, the volume intends to investigate these issues especially in the geographical, cultural and documentary context of Italy in the late Middle Ages and the early modern age, which has so far remained on the margins of this line of studies

Abstract: Within Seneca's prose, using a long-codified terminology, it is possible to identify a substratum which can be defined as diatribe. This volume aims at making up for the lack of a modern ensemble work on the cynical-stoic diatribe in Seneca's philosophy, analysing its features, influences and mediations. In response to a previous, almost purely compilatory, though systematic critical approach, this work offers an updated examination and contextualization of the individual stylistic elements bearing a seal of alleged 'diatribism'. This volume reconstructs the relationship, which is here deemed as 'complex', between the diatribe and Seneca's prose, while pursuing a research ideal which could combine moralistic contents and stylistic forms, philosophical preaching and rhetorical construction. Not least, the work aims at taking into account the extent to which the chronology of Seneca's works can be reconstructed. Among the fundamental mediations, it is possible to identify the teaching of Seneca's masters (the School of the Sextii and Attalus), the preaching of the Cynic philosopher Demetrius and Horace's poetry

Abstract: The domination of Filippo Maria Visconti in Lombardy (1412-1447) was the result of an attempt, only partially successful, to recompose the vast territories already dominated by the first duke, Giangaleazzo Visconti. For thirty-five years, the third duke of Milan governed a large, rich and prosperous state, strengthened its institutions, cultivated high monarchical ambitions and proclaimed ideas of peace, concord and justice. The use of force and diplomacy and the close confrontation with the political, social and economic actors of the domain were the tools adopted to strengthen and consolidate the ducal domination. The authors of this volume illustrate the political models underlying the exercise of the duke's authority, the ways of establishing relationships between authorities and subjects, the construction of the symbolic and ideological apparatus, the artistic commission of the prince, ecclesiastical politics and the religious events of the duchy against the background of the councils of Constance and Basel. Some specific moments of ducal politics are also analyzed: the deeds of dedication of 1412, the geopolitical set established in 1435 after the victory of Ponza, the crisis of the last years of the duchy characterized by the ruthless execution of the government practices. Ultimately, the book aims to offer a more in-depth and problematic view of the domination of the third duke of Milan, which in its chiaroscuro turns out to be an important moment in the stabilization of the structures of the Lombard regional state

Abstract: Through the tales of a group of former activists of "Lotta continua", an extra-parliamentary left-wing group, this work traces the cycle of mobilization which Italy went through during the Seventies, in search of the intersections between collective events and subjective experiences. The text focuses on two themes which are considered the tips of a controversial shared memory: political violence on one hand, and neo-feminism on the other. These two steps result fundamental in the process of subjectivation of individual men and women, and their effects can also be traced by observing the individual and collective outcomes of "demobilization"

Abstract: Unfinished work or interrupted work... It is difficult to find a definition, to identify the theme, to distinguish chance from intentionality. Few 'genres' and / or variations express as the 'unfinished' the same need for what is external to the work and which somehow completes it, bringing the work in a privileged position to create a harmony with our restless modernity. No wonder that in literature, in addition to what has been brutally interrupted, the letters, the diaries, the chronicles of disease and suffering are naturally suspended works. No wonder either that incompleteness accompanies the writings referring to unsolved issues, hidden traumas, silent melancholy. Dictated by choice or by distinct degrees of incapacity, the temptation of the unfinished pursues, urges, deludes its author... The private writings, the sketches, the projects, the papers testify the path necessary for the work to develop and conquer its shape. This book is rich and suggestive and has been conceived and edited by Anna Dolfi. Like its very object, the work is drafted in the perspective of the unfinished and questions some of the many possible examples, along a diachronic arc that goes to literature at figurative arts, theatre, cinema: from Leonardo to Blake, from Ariosto to Stendhal, from Dossi to Gadda, from Kafka to Borges, from Sarraute to Morante, from unknown writers affected by 'cancroregina' to the last Pirandello staged by Tiezzi, up to Fellini of the impossible Mastorna ... At the centre of the volume the readers will find a section with the typescript pages and the unpublished notebooks of / for the work La scelta by Giuseppe Dessí. They lead to the limits of white space, where the chambre claire fixes what is hidden beyond the writing with few, rarefied signs

Abstract: This book contains studies on the symbolic significance of the landscape for the communities inhabiting the central Anatolian plateau and the Upper Euphrates and Tigris valleys in the 2nd-1st millennia BC. Some of the scholars who attended to the international conference Sacred Landscapes of Hittites and Luwians held in Florence in February 2014, present here contributions on the religious, symbolic and social landscapes of Anatolia between the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age. Archaeologists, hittitologists and historians highlight how the ancient populations perceived many elements of the environment, like mountains, rivers and rocks, but also atmospheric agents, and natural phenomena as essential part of their religious and ideological world. Analysing landscapes, architectures and topographies built by the Anatolian communities in the second and first millennia BC, the framework of a symbolic construction intended for specific actions and practices clearly emerges

Abstract: Giorgio Trentin (1917-2013), eldest son of the anti-fascist exile Silvio and brother of the unionist Bruno, was one of the greatest connoisseurs, enthusiasts and 'defenders' of engraving art in Italy. With this conference promoted a few months after his death, the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice and the Centro documentazione e ricerca Trentin have brought together the researches of scholars from different backgrounds and the testimonies of those who knew Giorgio Trentin. The aim was the one of restoring unity to the two 'faces' of his figure: on one hand the civil and anti-fascist militancy (a characteristic and unmistakable mark of the family) on the other the commitment in the artistic field, which represented personal space of Giorgio or, better, his personal declination of that common militancy. To him, in fact, the engraving technique was an indispensable paradigm of moral rigour and the search for truth

Abstract: This study differs from the traditional approach to the history of Genoa in the Middle Ages, which is tied to the definition of the ianuensis mercator. On the contrary, it aims at showing aspects of the artisans' life, and therefore at correcting an orientation which has excessively privileged a specific (albeit crucial) sector of the city society. Through a systematic survey of the very rich notary registers, the study traces a multifaceted profile of those belonging to Genoa's trade categories in the 12th and 13th centuries. The first part of the research begins with a definition of the artisans' identity through the analysis of the anthroponymic system, which is then used to illustrate the social and economic dynamics underlying the apprenticeship and wage work. The central part of the book, on the other hand, is dedicated to the commercial and financial tools available to artisans, and to their involvement in long-range trade. The family structure and the social relationships are defined on the basis of a large sample of skills, testaments and quarrels, and then followed by an analysis of the artisans' role in land and real estate transactions. The final discussion focuses on the participation of artisans in the political life and in military activities

Abstract: This book presents the results of the survey conducted by the University of Florence, in the years 2008-2012, at the site and in the surrounding territory of Uşaklı Höyük on the central Anatolian plateau in Turkey. Geological, geomorphological, topographic and geophysical research have provided new information and data relating to the environment and the settlement landscape, as well as producing new maps of the area and indicating the presence of large buried buildings on the site. Analysis of the rich corpus of pottery collected from the surface indicates that the site and its territory were continuously settled from the late Early Bronze Age through the Iron Age and down to the Late Roman and Byzantine periods. A few fragments of cuneiform tablets with Hittite texts, a sealing with two impressions of a stamp seal, and pottery stamps illustrate the importance of Uşaklı Höyük and support the hypothesis of its identification with the town of Zippalanda, known from the Hittite sources as a seat of the cult of the Storm God

Abstract: Drawing on different disciplinary and historiographic traditions, the volume offers a series of summaries and thematic insights, functional to contextualising the peculiar case of the episcopate of Bobbio, founded in 1014 in the Piacenza Apennines as a development of the famous monastery of San Colombano. The considerable documentary source available thanks to the recent reorganization of the diocesan archives, which made it possible to illustrate the cathedral library as well, required an overall presentation and specific attention to the constitutive acts of the new institution. The deepening of the historical context, within which the subsequent diocesan story unfolds, was conducted in relationship with the monastery and with a selection of the nearby cities. The analysis of the settlement dynamics of the Bobbian center and of the structural developments of the church and of the episcopal complex are counterpointed by both in-depth analyses aimed at the organization of the territory, captured in its civil, religious, welfare articulations, and treatments of cultural and liturgical components that animate this Church

Abstract: This volume deals with the very current issue of prevention and protection of the historical buildings from seismic risk, offering a methodology of investigation, called "archaeoseismology", developed within university environments and refined by several discussions with professionals and experts of the field. The text is not only intended for an audience with an archaeological background, but also for the different people operating in the field of cultural heritage and seismic risk, be these architects, restorers, structural engineers, historians or seismologists. The book, therefore, aims at acting as a first step towards the affirmation of a news discipline, analysing and enhancing its applicability and potential, and providing unpublished and indispensable data for the knowledge, enhancement and protection of cultural heritage

The aim of the volume is to answer some of the main questions which have characterized the public debate in Italy over the past twenty years. Did the transition from the First to the Second Republic really take place? What role did the leader of the party "Forza Italia" play in this process? Does the new political system represent an anomaly compared to Italy's recent history? Answering these questions will make a clear reading of current political affairs easier

Abstract: "Not forgetting" and "not remembering". These two contradictory aspects have always furrowed the autobiographical and collective memory of dramatic historical events, such as the Holocaust. This volume, whose origin lies in a couple of conferences held in Pistoia and Florence during the celebrations of the 2014 Day of Remembrance, moves along these two rough paths of remembrance. At its centre, there is Andrea Devoto's work on the memory of political deportation in Tuscany. The invited authors have tried to weave links and to signal new methods of analysis, as well as reflections, accompanied by the awareness that the keystone for the past lies in the present. For this reason, this book is intended to act as a dialogue partner within the social practices of the citizens' memory and civic training

Abstract: Bruno Trentin kept a tense and emotional lectio magistralis at the graduation ceremony for the honoris causa degree which he was awarded by the same university where his father had worked as a lecturer, before Fascism had forced him into exile, Ten years later, in the same place, scholars of different disciplines and generations read that text again, and relate it with their research. Lavoro e conoscenza functions as a prism, from which several different colours come out, and then end up revealing the complex stratification of that same lesson which condenses indeed the thoughts and hopes of one of the most fascinating Italian intellectuals and politicians of the second half of the 20th century. This book and the conference proceedings collect the texts of Trentin's lectio and of the laudatio the university gave him

Abstract: The volume collects the contributions of the 'study day' held on June 16, 2010 at the University of Florence on Abbeys and medieval landscapes in Tuscany, that is, on the forms of the territory that have structured the ways of life in the countryside of our region for centuries. Today an infatuation is observed for that kind of landscape, which is confirmed by a lack of interest for its conservation or for transformations respectful of the rules that produced it. It is therefore appropriate to submit to the historic method a synthetic view of the medieval landscape, from the ancient premises to the economic reasons that led to the monastic and feudal forms, up to the appearance of a new structure appreciated for its useful beauty, in a persistent substratum of mysterious storytelling. Tuscany allows multiple evidence of what actually survives of the pervasive order established in the Middle Ages also for its exemplary literary and iconographic representations, both contemporary and of the medieval times

Abstract: The contributions collected in this volume are the result of the seminars organized by the Laboratory of Modern History during its ten-year activity (from 2003 to 2013) within the Department of Historical and Geographical Studies (now called SAGAS Department) of the University of Florence. Thanks to the participation of Italian and international colleagues, as well as young scholars, this annual cycle of seminars, entitled Temi e problemi della storia moderna ("Themes and problems of Modern History"), aims at encouraging the scientific community to discuss and reflect critically on topics of great historical importance. The theme of otherness is central in the Modern Age as well as in in the contemporary world, and it has been the subject of several seminars. The essays reconstruct significant moments and aspects of the relationships with "the other" in modern Europe: political models and cultural paradigms, cities of refuge and institutes of conversion, attitudes showing integration and/or exclusion of the Jews, Muslims, heretics and foreigners have been analysed in the volume according to the Laboratory's 'pluralistic spirit'

Abstract: The royal monastery of San Salvatore on Mount Amiata, which, according to tradition, was founded in the 8th century by the will of the Lombard kings near the papal lands, has been the focus of numerous researches in recent decades dedicated not only to some famous codices preserved for centuries in his library, but also to the documentary writings handed down in the Diplomatico, which collects documentation from the mid-eighth century. In this volume, the paleographic and diplomatic interpretation of the writings elaborated by the abbots and the Amiata monks intertwines with the reconstruction of the practices of power management, both in its local dimension and in that of relations with popes and emperors

Abstract: The volume contains eighteen original essays, written - upon invitation - by internationally renowned scholars from various Italian or foreign universities. The major issues that recent papyrus discoveries have raised (or re-proposed) on the text and interpretation of several of Menander's comedies are addressed, outlining an authoritative and fully updated picture of our knowledge in this regard. Among other things, the first fruits of the edition (with photography) of a new, previously unpublished fragment of the famous (and discussed) Michigan papyrus are offered. All reports present remarkable aspects of editorial novelty, with philological, linguistic and literary comments, relevant for the cultural debate on Menandro's comedy, and therefore for the history of ancient theater and its evolution, as well as for the study of the influences exercised from the New Comedy on the later Latin and Italian tradition

Abstract: Carlo Marsuppini (1398-1453) is a well known professor at the Studio Fiorentino, Chancellor of the Republic, friend of Cosimo de' Medici and tutor of his children, translator of Homeric and pseudo-homeric works, author of private and, above all, public letters. His activity as a poet is less known: his writings in vernacular were so far entrusted to a handful of poems published in the collection Carmina illustrium poetarum italorum (1720). This book offers for the first time a rigorous critical edition of the humanist's poetic production, based on the analysis of the vast vast known manuscript tradition, and a broad commentary on the individual poems, of which a translation into Italian is also offered

Abstract: The fifteenth century is the century of hospital reforms, started in numerous Italian cities in order to overcome the inadequacies of traditional charitable practices of the Middle Ages and to face the social and health emergencies of that period with the help of different tools. Vicenza also participated in the reform process, restructuring the organisation of its care network, especially thanks to the intervention of the urban patriciate, which ruled the government of the major hospitals according to "managerial" criteria. In the fifteenth century the search for the bonum commune (common good) thus found expression in a new and rational way of understanding, financing and dispensing charity, conversing with public and private actors of the urban scene: a new but not so revolutionary way, in which ancient and recent feelings converged, such as Christian pietas, civic religiosity and protection of the social class' status quo

Abstract: The studies included in this volume analyze the legal and social history of Europe and North America by the end of the eighteenth century to the contemporary age. The study investigates the relationship between culture and legal status (science, law and government), the administration of justice and the transformation of the legal professions. That lights up the separation, in the whole complex of Western legal tradition, that identifies the countries of the common law

Abstract: In "Poetics", Aristotle accepts history among the possible themes for poetry, on the condition that the poet reaches the universal plane by narrating events which comply with the rules of eikos and of anankaion. With the alteration of Athens's history in the dialogue "Menexenus" and Solon's poem on Atlantis in the dialogue "Critias", Plato precedes Aristotle's reflection and gives historical narration a central role in the citizens' paideia. In the 5th century, Greek poetry on historical subjects, from Aeschylus's piece "The Persians" to the poem "The Persians" by Timotheus of Miletus, anticipated and put into practice the themes which Plato and Aristotle would later argument on s theorethical level, namely: the intertwining between the particular of history and the universal of poetry, the models for the mimesis, the audience's reaction spacing between eleos, phobos and geloion

Abstract: Benjamin G. Kohl (1938-2010) taught at Vassar College from 1966 till his retirement as Andrew W. Mellon Professor of the Humanities in 2001. His doctoral research at The Johns Hopkins University was directed by Frederic C. Lane, and his principal historical interests focused on northern Italy during the Renaissance, especially on Padua and Venice. His scholarly production includes the volumes Padua under the Carrara, 1318-1405 (1998), and Culture and Politics in Early Renaissance Padua (2001), and the online database The Rulers of Venice, 1332-1524 (2009). The database is eloquent testimony of his priority attention to historical sources and to their accessibility, and also of his enthusiasm for collaboration and sharing among scholars

Abstract: The essays gathered in the volume, thanks to a long series of in-depth studies, have resulted in a closer look at many crucial milestones in the history of European legal and political philosophy, both from the perspective of the common "ius commune" (civil and canon) and in particular rights of the individual jurisdictions. Analysis of strictly theoretical aspects are analyzed along with reviews on the subject of specific and concrete experiences; also stories from books and texts have been analyzed as elements of solicitation of cultural debate

Abstract: The researches accounted in the volume, being reported by historians who had different vocations, illustrate various aspects of medieval and modern history (laws, economy, society, church and civil institutions, architecture, art, urban planning); they are focused on single town realities and limited geographical-political areas. Among these, particular attention ought to be given to the city of Siena and its territory, which constitute one of the centres of interest for the illustrious scholar to whom is dedicated the series of four volumes, which the present also belongs to

Abstract: The articles collected in the book offer insights on major aspects that determined the success and development of the "ius commune", progressively spread out across Europe, and from Europe to those parts of the world that felt the influence. Three prospects are hereby taken onto account, in a time span of seven centuries (XII-XVIII): the consilia of Jurists, the training paths in universities (texts, literary genres, doctrines, teaching and teachers) and the canonical science

Abstract: The volume contains the documents of the study day held in Florence on the 4th October 2012 and presents the contributions of nine young scholars of proven competence, belonging to different Italian universities. The multifaceted Greek poetic production of the post-Hellenistic age is investigated through its literary genres and the specific issues it poses: mythological-narrative and didactic epic, theological oracles, pagan and Christian hymnography, an epigram, survival of the poetic expressive code in the prose of the early Byzantine age. The essays are different in perspective - critical-textual, exegetical, historical-literary - but are united by a solid philological basis; moreover, each of them offers innovative ideas that make the volume of great interest for the international scientific community

Abstract: On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Italian National Unity, the Faculty of Political Science "Cesare Alfieri" promoted a series of lessons on an interdisciplinary system on crucial issues of Italy's unitary constitution. At the end of this cycle of readings, on 28 November 2011 the Faculty promoted a day of study on the theme "Which kind of federalism for today's Italy". To this end, scholars were invited to offer their contributes and reflections which, from a historical, constitutional, sociological, political and economic perspective, could help taking the stock of the crucial issue of the federal redefinition of the Italian state. A varied and complex picture emerged, where the different disciplinary perspectives make up an integrated, multifaceted but not contradictory mosaic of possible federalism, aimed at regenerating the institutions of the Republic and their relationship with citizens. The volume collects the results of that day of study and proposes them to the reading of students and scholars

Abstract: Between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, the elites (secular and ecclesiastical) of the many villages, castles, smaller urban centres that make the Italian landscape so unique, started to deeply rethink the past of their "small homeland". Roman (but also pre-Roman) heritage and medieval tradition are at the centre of interest; bold "inventions" and manipulations alternate with searches for a solid erudite structure. The essays published here concern the Italian regions of Piedmont, Romagna, Emilia, Tuscany, Marche, Umbria, Terra di Bari, Campania. In the essays, a strong sense of identity and a robust self-awareness emerges; ultimately, this is the vitality of a connective tissue of settlements featuring an "original character" relevant in the Italian historical events from the Middle Ages to the present day

Abstract: The three-volume correspondence by Pier Candido Decembrio represents a precious source for the history of northern Humanism and, more generally, for the understanding of the fifteenth-century civilisation. The first epistolary volume covers the time span 1423-1432 and the themes of the epistles cover all the points of the political and literary humanistic debate, from Petrarch to Valla

Abstract: Twenty years ago a unique figure in the history of our country returned dramatically to the world of the "drowned", one of the spectral "saved" who had found the strength to testify the dramas of the twentieth century: Primo Levi. On the twentieth anniversary of his death, Firenze University Press has decided to revive his lesson with a tribute that is not intended as a celebration, but rather as a pause for refection in which we can listen again to the words of this great writer, dissected and scrutinised the world over, generating germs of memory hopefully as universal as the mathematical and geometrical signs and the chemical formulas he so loved. Voci dal mondo per Primo Levi. In memoria, per la memoria edited by Luigi Dei, a lecturer in physical chemistry at the University of Florence, consists of fifteen short essays contributed by a polyhedric group of writers from various parts of the world and of different educational and professional backgrounds. Abstract: Consciously repressed by the current dominating culture, in Italy and Europe in the late mediaeval and early modern age death was addressed with greater confidence and awareness, and sometimes even with serenity. The modes of dying and of conceiving death - and the varied and rich religious and civil rituals that accompanied it - reflected the values and the choices of rich and poor, of kings and peasants, merchants and soldiers, nobles and churchmen, men and women. Several decades after the major studies that opened the road to these strands of research in Italy too (Ariès, Tenenti), this book offers a series of penetrating and suggestive explorations of a fascinating and complex theme which no reader can consider extraneous
