    Kurzfassung: The Italian cities of the last centuries of the Middle Ages continued to witness – alongside a progressive crystallisation of the social hierarchies – the economic and social ascent of individuals belonging to the 'middle class’. These were homines novi who, without resorting to dynastic connections and often rejecting the associative model of the guilds, managed to build fortunes and dignity through trade, enterprise, the exploitation of the land, the solidarity of district and parish and the management of welfare. Emblematic of such careers is the figure of an economic agent originating from the rural district, Donato Ferrario da Pantigliate, who in 1429 founded in Milan a devotional and welfare institute, the Scuola della Divinità. The book reconstructs the social, economic and spiritual conduct of Donato, placing it within the urban context of Milan in the first half of the fifteenth century

    Kurzfassung: The strategic value of operations is the leitmotif that runs through the entire book. Based on this, in the first chapter the author proposes a reading of production strategy that goes beyond a content and category approach to include aspects of positioning (strategic groups of manufacturers), goals, perspectives, strategic ploys, patterns and plans as well as resources and skills. Chapter two then addresses world class manufacturing, conceived as a system of basic principles, guidelines and general criteria for the design and management of the production system that appears to characterise outstanding enterprises. Onto this three fundamental approaches of streamlined production can be effectively grafted: Just-In-Time, Total Quality Management and employee empowerment. Finally chapter three represents an initial attempt at verification of the formulated theories

    Kurzfassung: City life in the Italy of the communes was a unique experience in the Middle Ages, “another world” from that of the countryside in terms of the customs, beliefs and practices that conditioned the attitudes of a complex society. In order to verify Lopez’ definition of the city as a “frame of mind”, the issues addressed include the perception and memory of time (both real and mythical), the elaboration of models of behaviour (that of chivalry), and the conditioning of the urban ambience through to the creation of an “acoustic landscape” of the city. The significance of what it meant to be a citizen in mediaeval Italy emerges tangibly from the evidence of contemporaries

    Kurzfassung: The book illustrates the results of a wide-ranging survey of the overall situation of the olive oil market and the Italian production chain for olives and olive oil. Based on the results of this investigation, two possible prospects for development have been identified. The first follows the guidelines that prevail at Community level, favouring a specialist olive cultivation. The second instead aims at a valorisation of agriculture where it features social aspects of particular significance. From this viewpoint the various olive farms in Italy ought not to be considered in a standardised manner, but individually valorised in relation to their different functions, which are not necessarily expressed in terms of yield.〈p〉Il volume illustra i risultati di una ampia ricognizione sulla situazione complessiva del mercato oleario e sulla filiera produttiva italiana olivicolo-olearia. Sulla base dei risultati di tale indagine vengono individuate due possibili prospettive di sviluppo. La prima segue gli indirizzi prevalenti a livello comunitario che favoriscono una olivicoltura specializzata. La seconda punta ad una valorizzazione dell'agricoltura dove questa presenti aspetti sociali particolarmente rilevanti. In questa prospettiva le diverse olivicolture presenti nel Paese dovrebbero essere considerate non in modo omogeneo, ma valorizzate in relazione alle diverse funzioni svolte, non necessariamente esprimibili in termini di rese

    Kurzfassung: In the spring of 1995, during works for the rehabilitation of a wall that closed the grotto of the Old Cemetery in the Sicilian village of Alia, the skeletal remains of the victims of the cholera outbreak of 1837 that had been rapidly interred here were brought to light. From that moment on, the Alia project was developed without interruption, analysing the biological evolution of the local population by exploiting study methods characteristic of different anthropological disciplines, such as skeletal biology, population genetics and biodemography. The book renders account of research completed and in progress carried out by academics from the Universities of Florence, Palermo, Parma, Cagliari, Turin and Göttingen
