Abstract:
Die Studie untersucht die vielfältigen Verbindungslinien im frühen 20. Jahrhundert zwischen der Suche nach amerikanischer Identität und dem Wunsch nach einer von Europa unabhängigen, eigenständigen Kunst und Kultur. Im Mittelpunkt stehen dabei die meinungsbildenden liberalen Zeitschriften dieser Zeit. Deutlich wird das kulturnationalistische Bestreben amerikanischer Publizisten, Künstler und Schriftsteller, die USA von europäischen Einflussnahmen und postkolonialen Befindlichkeiten zu befreien.Dieser kulturelle Nationalismus fällt nicht zufällig in eine Phase intensivierter Am
Abstract:
Die Studie untersucht die vielfältigen Verbindungslinien im frühen 20. Jahrhundert zwischen der Suche nach amerikanischer Identität und dem Wunsch nach einer von Europa unabhängigen, eigenständigen Kunst und Kultur. Im Mittelpunkt stehen dabei die meinungsbildenden liberalen Zeitschriften dieser Zeit. Deutlich wird das kulturnationalistische Bestreben amerikanischer Publizisten, Künstler und Schriftsteller, die USA von europäischen Einflussnahmen und postkolonialen Befindlichkeiten zu befreien.Dieser kulturelle Nationalismusfällt nicht zufällig in eine Phase intensivierter Amerikanisierungspolitik. Hierbei wurden Abgrenzungen zu Rassismus, Eugenik und Nativismus häufig überschritten, und Alternativkonzepte der 'Anderen' im Lande fanden in den Diskursen über nationale Identität kaum Widerhall.Der europäische Antiamerikanismus der 1920er Jahre bot den zumeist transatlantisch eingestellten Publizisten mannigfache Gelegenheiten, die Andersartigkeit Europas und die Differenz der USA zum Alten Kontinentherauszustellen sowie gleichzeitig die transatlantischen Kommunikations- und Übersetzungsprozesse zu intensivieren.
