Kurzfassung:
La migration bretonne vers les Amériques est remarquable par son importance et sa continuité. Selon Le Clech, pionnier et spécialiste de la migration bretonne, 550 000 Bretons ont émigré pour les Etats-Unis et 45 000 pour le Canada entre 1880 et 1910. Plusieurs études ont été réalisées en France et au Canada, par des historiens, décrivant les arrivées successives de Bretons en Amérique du Nord, les causes ou facteurs de leur migration, leurs lieux d’implantation et leur réinsertion sociale et professionnelle. Mais ces ouvrages traitent davantage de la migration vers les États-Unis, alors que le nombre de migrants bretons y est presque égal à celui du Canada. L’originalité de ma recherche réside dans le terrain d’observation choisi, à savoir la province du Québec, au Canada. En effet, les Canadiens français qui y résident, aujourd’hui appelés les Québécois, est un groupe minoritaire qui a subi des oppressions linguistiques et culturelles comparables à celles des Bretons. Par conséquent, ce terrain m’a semblé pertinent pour analyser les relations qu’ont établies les migrants bretons avec ce groupe minoritaire. D’autre part, l’intérêt qui m’a conduit à travailler sur la migration des Bretons au Québec est de découvrir comnent leur appartenance culturelle régionale bretonne, autrement dit leur bretonnité, a été déterritorialisée, puis relocalisée en terre d’accueil. Je considère donc la migration comme une situation expérimentale au travers de laquelle j’ai tenté d’analyser comment se déconstruit, se reconstruit ou se construit une appartenance culturelle. En d’autre termes, pourquoi et comment certains migrants bretons du Québec expriment, valorisent voire réinventent leur appartenance culturelle régionale bretonne à 6000 km de leur territoire d’origine ? Cette recherche m’a permis d’éclairer bien sûr les formes d’appartenance culturelle de la communauté bretonne en situation de mobilité géographique, mais également de contribuer à la connaissance et à la compréhension de celles d’autres communautés culturelles et ainsi de participer à l’enrichissement des connaissances dans les champs de l’anthropologie et l’ethnologie des migrations
Kurzfassung:
The Breton migration to the American continent is noticeable considering its number and its continuity. According to Le Clech, pioneer and specialist of the Breton migration, 55 000 Breton people have emigrated to the USA and 45 000 to Canada between 1880 and 1970. Some studies were carried out in France and Canada, by historians, which described the repeated arrivals of Breton people in North America, the reasons or factors for their migration, the places for their settlement and their social and professional reintegration. Nevertheless, these studies are more focused on the migration to the USA, while they are nearly the same number of Breton migrants in Canada. The originality of my research lies in the chosen field of observation, which is the province of Quebec, Canada. lndeed, the French Canadian who live there, as called today Quebecois, are a minority group who was subjected similare pressure toward their language and culture as the Breton people. Consequently, this field appeared to be pertinent to analyse the relations established between the migrants and this minority group. On the other hand, what interested me in the study of the migration of the Bretons was the discovery of the way their sentiment to belonging to the regional Breton culture, in other word their “Bretonness”, was taken from the territory of origin and relocated in the destination country. I consider therefore the migration as an experimental situation, through which I tried to analyse how a cultural belonging is unbuilt, rebuilt or built. In other words, why and how some Breton migrants in Quebec express, promote, or even recreate their cultural belonging 6000 km far from their territory of birth territory? This research allowed me to throw light of course the different expressions of cultrural belonging in a situation of geographical mobility. It also allowed me to contribute to the knowledge and the understanding of the belonging to other cultural communities and therefore to participate in enriching theknowledge in the field anthropology and ethnology of migrations
