    Abstract: Städtische Verwaltungen und Regierungen sind zunehmend besessen vom "Image" ihrer Stadt und stürzen sich in einen Vermarktungswettbewerb, der auf Tourismus, Investoren und Immobilienmärkte ausgerichtet ist. Die Menschen, die in der Stadt leben, werden dabei zum Ziel architektonischer Verdrängungsmaßnahmen. Mickaël Labbé zeigt, wie ganze Bevölkerungsteile durch eine kaum wahrnehmbare Architektur der Verachtung als unerwünscht ausgeschlossen werden. Überwachungskameras, Bänke mit geneigter Sitzfläche oder trennenden Armlehnen, auf denen man nicht schlafen kann, und andere subtile Maßnahmen erschweren insbesondere sozial marginalisierten Menschen wie Obdachlosen das Leben in der Stadt.Gegen diese Tendenz führt Labbé die Notwendigkeit ins Feld, eine Stadt neu zu erfinden, die sich an uns alle richtet. Anstelle von ausschließenden Mechanismen braucht es Räume, in denen wir unsere Verbindungen wieder enger knüpfen können. Denn eine Stadt, die nicht mehr auf ihre gemeinschaftliche Nutzung ausgerichtet ist, die nur aus homogenen Ghettos besteht, wo wir einander nicht mehr konfrontativ und in aller Unterschiedlichkeit begegnen können, ist ein Verlust für uns alle.Labbé beschreibt funktionierende Beispiele einer "Architektur der Anerkennung" und plädiert für eine Wiederaneignung des öffentlichen Raums

Cette étude rassemble des approches aussi bien théoriques qu'issues de la pratique du terrain et analyse la genèse des ONG, leurs expériences et leurs terrains. L'ouvrage examine d'abord la société civile, partenariats et ONG des droits de l'homme ; puis le renforcement des capacités des ONG, des politiques publiques, les stratégies d'adaptation et l'histoire des ONG ; enfin, plusieurs contributions se penchent sur les ONG religieuses et les politiques publiques.     Abstract: Der belgische Schriftsteller und Historiker Reybrouck ist durch ein monumentales Werk über die Geschichte Kongos (siehe "Kongo", ID-A 24/12) schon einem gröe︣ren Publikum bekannt geworden. Die in diesem Buch beschriebene Revolusi (Revolution) bezeichnet die Periode, während der die Indonesier nach der Besetzung durch Japan einen Guerilla-Krieg gegen die zurückkehrenden niederländischen Kolonialherren führten und schliesslich im Dezember 1949 die internationale Anerkennung der im August 1945 proklamierten nationalen Unabhängigkeit erreichten. Für Reybrouck waren diese Ereignisse, die ausserhalb Indonesiens bis heute kaum beachtet werden, weltgeschichtlich bedeutsam. Er schildert die ungemein komplexen diplomatischen, militärischen und innenpolitischen Entwicklungen lebhaft und auch für den Laien gut nachvollziehbar. Dabei bezieht er sich auf fast 200 ausführliche Interviews mit, überwiegend indonesischen, Zeitzeugen. In der fesselnden Darstellung spannt Reybrouck den Bogen von den Anfängen der indonesischen Geschichte bis in die 1950er-Jahre und vermag es, auch den Blick Betroffener einzubeziehen.     Abstract: This is a study of how Donald J. Trump, his populist credentials notwithstanding, borrows without acknowledgment and stubbornly refuses to come to terms with his indebtedness. Taken together with mobility and conviviality, the principle of incompleteness enables us to distinguish between inclusionary and exclusionary forms of populism, and when it is fuelled by ambitions of superiority and zero-sum games of conquest.Nyamnjoh challenges the reader to reflect on how stifling frameworks of citizenship and belonging predicated upon hierarchies of humanity and mobility, and driven by a burning but elusive quest for completeness, can be constructively transcended by humility and conviviality inspired by taking incompleteness seriously. Nyamnjoh argues that the logic and practice of incompleteness is a healthy antidote to name-calling and scapegoating others as undesirable outsiders, depending on the brand of populism at play.Recognising incompleteness also helps to question sterile and problematic binaries such as those between elites and the impoverished masses among whom populists go to fish for political visibility, prominence and success.

    Abstract: National Museums in Africa brings the voices of African museum professionals into dialogue with scholars and, by so doing, is able to consider the state of African national museums from fresh perspectives.Covering all regions of the continent, the volume`s thirteen chapters allow for a deep and nuanced understanding of the intricate interplay between past and present in contemporary Africa. Taking stock of the shifting museum landscape in Africa, with new players like China and South Korea challenging the conditions of cultural exchange, the book demonstrates that national museums are being rediscovered as important sites of political engagement and cultural negotiation. This is the first book to critically examine the roles national museums in Africa have played in the societies in which they are situated, but it is also the first to consider the roles that national museums might play in current debates concerning the restitution and repatriation of cultural patrimony taken from Africa during the colonial era.Informed by a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective, this ground-breaking book will appeal to anyone interested in museums in Africa. Ihr Buch handelt vom Aufwachsen als Schwarze Frau in einer Gesellschaft, die immer noch Mühe hat, ihren eigenen Rassismus zu erkennen, aber auch vom Weg in die Politik, von Erfolgen und vom Scheitern IBM nicht, um zu sagen, dass es schwer oder einfach war, sondern, um zu sagen, was in diesem Land anders werden muss. Politik kann mehr sein als Machterhalt und die Verwaltung der Zustände. Ein Aufruf an junge und diverse Menschen, in die Institutionen zu gehen, um die Politik und unser Zusammenleben zu verändern. Aminata Touré, geboren 1992, wuchs in Neumünster auf und trat 2012 der Grünen Jugend bei. Seit 2017 ist sie Landtagsabgeordnete in Schleswig-Holstein und seit 2019 Vizepräsidentin des Parlaments. Die Publikation stellt die Geschichte der documenta in den Kontext der politischen, kultur- und gesellschaftsgeschichtlichen Entwicklung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts und setzt so Kunst und Geschichte in ein sich wechselseitig bedingendes Verhältnis. Immer wieder war die internationale Großausstellung ein Ort, an dem das westdeutsche Selbstverständnis verhandelt wurde. Progressive und regressive politische Tendenzen standen dabei von Anfang an nebeneinander. „Die einzelnen Essays wechseln sich mit Bildstrecken der Exponate und knappen Kommentaren ab. So ist trotz aller hier geäußerter inhaltlicher Kritik eine handliche und ansprechende Dokumentation zur Geschichte der documenta zwischen 1955 und 1997 entstanden, die den aktuellen Wissenstand präsentiert. But as palapas, traditional thatch and wood houses, are replaced by tract houses in the Yucatán Peninsula, Indigenous peoples' relationship to land, urbanism, and finance is similarly transformed, revealing a legacy of debt and dispossession.Indigenous Dispossession examines how Maya families grapple with the ramifications of neoliberal housing policies. M. Bianet Castellanos relates Maya migrants' experiences with housing and mortgage finance in Cancún, one of Mexico's fastest-growing cities. Their struggle to own homes reveals colonial and settler colonial structures that underpin the city's economy, built environment, and racial order. But even as Maya people contend with predatory lending practices and foreclosure, they cultivate strategies of resistance from "waiting out" the state, to demanding Indigenous rights in urban centers. As Castellanos argues, it is through these maneuvers that Maya migrants forge a new vision of Indigenous urbanism.

    Abstract: In Deutschland leben zahlreiche Musiker*innen aus der Türkei, die in ihrem Herkunftsland aus politischen Gründen nicht uneingeschränkt leben und musizieren könnten. Sie verließen die Türkei aufgrund des Militärputsches von 1980, der Diskriminierung ihrer kurdischen und/oder alevitischen Identität oder des gescheiterten Gezi-Protests und erneuter Einschränkungen von Minderheitsgruppierungen im Musikleben. Kirsten Seidlitz untersucht, wie sie von Deutschland aus mit ihrem musikalischen Schaffen politisch kommentieren, inwiefern die deutsche Gesellschaft mit Musik erreicht, aufgeklärt und beeinflusst werden kann, und ob die in Deutschland produzierte Musik zurück in die Türkei gelangt.

    Abstract: Histories of the colonisation of Australia have recognised distinct periods or eras in the colonial relationship: 'protection' and 'assimilation'. It is widely understood that, in 1973, the Whitlam Government initiated a new policy era: 'self-determination'. Yet, the defining features of this era, as well as how, why and when it ended, are far from clear. In this collection we ask: how shall we write the history of self-determination? How should we bring together, in the one narrative, innovations in public policy and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander initiatives? How (dis)continuous has 'self-determination' been with 'assimilation' or with what came after? Among the contributions to this book there are different views about whether Australia is still practising 'self-determination' and even whether it ever did or could. This book covers domains of government policy and Indigenous agency including local government, education, land rights, the outstation movement, international law, foreign policy, capital programs, health, public administration, mission policies and the policing of identity. Each of the contributors is a specialist in his/her topic. Few of the contributors would call themselves 'historians', but each has met the challenge to consider Australia's recent past as an era animated by ideas and practices of Indigenous self-determination.

    Abstract: Britain's declaration of war on Germany on 3 September, 1939, made Nigeria, like many other African societies, active participants in the war against the Axis powers. Of the 90,000 West African soldiers deployed to South East Asia after 1943, over half came from Nigeria. In this important, revisionist history, Chima J. Korieh examines how the lives of Nigerian producers, workers, merchants, men, women, and children from across society were affected. It recounts the extraordinary and often neglected story of the Nigerian people who were drawn into a global war, the enormous demands it made on their resources, and the way it would change both their lives and the societies they lived in. By placing the role that African societies played in the war within the contextual and theoretical frameworks of colonialism, race, gender, identity, labour, intellectual, and social history, Korieh challenges the dominant perception that World War II was primarily a European conflict and reveals the global impact of ordinary Nigerians on the war effort.
