Abstract: Bereits im 18. Jahrhundert fragten Philosoph*innen, Mediziner*innen und Anthropolog*innen nach dem Einfluss des Klimas auf den Menschen: Waren Differenzen in Körperbau und Hautfarbe Wirkungen des Klimas? Bestimmte die Umwelt den menschlichen Charakter? Und waren unterschiedliche Staatsformen das Resultat verschiedener Klimata? Im Zentrum stand dabei auch die Frage nach der Autonomie der Vernunft gegenüber der Natur. Bernd Kleinhans gibt einen Überblick über die Klimadebatten dieser Zeit und zeichnet die Grundpositionen des Diskurses nach. Dabei wird deutlich: Die Frage nach dem Verhältnis des Menschen zu seiner Umwelt ist eines der Grundprobleme der Moderne.

Abstract: Black communities have been making major contributions to Europe's social and cultural life and landscapes for centuries. However, their achievements largely remain unrecognized by the dominant societies, as their perspectives are excluded from traditional modes of marking public memory. For the first time in European history, leading Black scholars and activists examine this issue – with first-hand knowledge of the eight European capitals in which they live. Highlighting existing monuments, memorials, and urban markers they discuss collective narratives, outline community action, and introduce people and places relevant to Black European history, which continues to be obscured today.

Abstract: The fall of the Berlin Wall is typically understood as the culmination of political-economic trends that fatally weakened the East German state. Meanwhile, comparatively little attention has been paid to the cultural dimension of these dramatic events, particularly the role played by Western mass media and consumer culture. With a focus on the 1970s and 1980s, Don’t Need No Thought Control explores the dynamic interplay of popular unrest, intensifying economic crises, and cultural policies under Erich Honecker. It shows how the widespread influence of (and public demands for) Western cultural products forced GDR leaders into a series of grudging accommodations that undermined state power to a hitherto underappreciated extent.

Massenmedien aufgegriffen und an die Konsumenten herangetragen - in Deutschland ebenso wie in Kanada oder China. Dieser Band erweitert den bislang auf die Konsumgeschichte einzelner Länder und Regionen konzentrierten Fokus zugunsten europäischer sowie globaler Muster und Vergleiche.

Abstract: Long description: In Analogie zu den stadträumlichen Inszenierungen jüdischer Kultur, den »Jewish Spaces«, gewinnnen zunehmend auch »Gypsy Spaces« an Gestalt. Roma-Festivals sind populär, während gleichzeitig die Angst vor einer »Roma-Invasion« grassiert. Monica Rüthers geht der Entstehungsgeschichte und den Funktionen dieser neuen Folklore im gegenwärtigen Europa nach. Sie vergleicht das jüdische Kulturfestival in Krakau mit der Zigeunerwallfahrt in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer und passt beide Räume in die kulturellen Topografien Europas ein. Die Analyse dieser Anlässe erlaubt die Frage, ob solche Räume auch emanzipatorisches Potenzial entfalten können. Es zeigt sich: Im Umgang mit dem Fremden spiegelt sich der Prozess der europäischen Integration. - Biographical note: Monica Rüthers ist Professorin für Osteuropäische Geschichte an der Universität Hamburg. Abstract: Die Initiative der ›Europäischen Kulturhauptstadt‹ soll dazu beitragen, interkulturelle Prozesse auf städtischer, nationaler und europäischer Ebene zu reflektieren und zu fördern. Mit diesem Anspruch gehen jedoch zahlreiche gesellschaftliche, räumliche, kulturelle und ästhetische Probleme einher, die nicht immer befriedigend zu lösen sind. Der daraus entstehenden Gemengelage von Europa und Regionalität, Identität und Pluralität, Kommerz und Kunst widmet sich dieser Sammelband aus einer interdisziplinären Perspektive. Er vergleicht erstmals exemplarisch die Kulturhauptstadtjahre in Luxemburg und der Großregion (2007), im Ruhrgebiet (2010) und in Istanbul (2010) und stellt dabei Interkulturalität als raum- und kulturübergreifendes Phänomen kontrastiv ins Zentrum der Analysen
