Abstract:
This study examines the position of chiefs in the Grassfield region of Cameroon from the late nineteenth century through the colonial and the post-colonial state. It deals with the way Grassfield chiefs manipulated their positions to mobilize people and resources not only to meet the demands of the colonial state but also to protect and advance their own interests. The study analyzes the nature of the relationship between Grassfield chiefs and the educated elite during the era of decolonization, and examines how chiefs tried to secure their place in the post-colonial political structure in Cameroon
