Abstract: "Twenty-first century organizational leaders face many difficult challenges. As governments and businesses expand to meet the needs of an ever-increasing population, the decisions leaders make today are more important than ever. With rising competition amid the uncertainty of a progressively globalized economy, success and failure are increasingly defined on an ever-grander scale. In these trying times, how can executives and other business, government, and nonprofit leaders guide their organizations to success amid the challenges of the modern world? In this extensively researched yet thoroughly practical book, renowned executive consultant Richard Kilburg characterizes effective leadership as a combination of specific behaviorally based competencies and virtuous aspects of character. He demonstrates that despite all the complexities of the modern world, the foundations of executive leadership can still be found in the timeless and enduring virtues of the ancient Chinese and Greeks. With rich and informative discussions of the classical and modern literatures on virtue and executive leadership, and a wealth of exercises and questionnaires that translate models of leadership into plans for action, Virtuous Leaders is a vital resource for leaders and executive consultants alike, and is sure to become a classic in the field"--Publicity materials.

Abstract: "New advances across the social sciences are highlighting social networks as phenomena that can motivate people and change lives. But what the literature has not addressed is what gives social networks such power. How do they facilitate and regulate change? Parsimoniously answering these questions from a scientific perspective is not as simple as one may think. In fact, relatively few theories have attempted to comprehensively explain how social networks influence goal achievement and performance across situations from a metatheoretical perspective. Although numerous books and articles have nicely focused on social networks, motivation, goals, leadership, and organizational behavior, few have developed a unified theory that explains behavior across these domains. In response, this volume introduces a new dynamic network theory of goal pursuit to explain how social networks influence goal achievement, performance, and behaviorally related processes at various levels of analysis. This original theory goes beyond traditional social network analyses by directly infusing goals and network regulation processes into social networks, an approach that has not been sufficiently addressed, theoretically or empirically, in social psychology, industrial and organizational psychology, or management science. This volume uniquely combines the new theory with new methodologies to address the complexities of social network action at individual, group, organizational, and international levels of analysis"--Preface. Abstract: "In the present volume, we focus beyond the goal of reducing prejudice to explore what other factors might be necessary to improve relations between groups. This book brings together original contributions from leading scholars in social psychology who have begun to examine the motivations and processes that underlie people's ability to develop positive and meaningful relationships across group boundaries. The present volume compels us to move beyond our field's traditional focus on prejudice reduction, to consider novel approaches to studying intergroup attitudes and strategies that we can use to improve relations between groups"--Introduction. Abstract: "Discussions of prejudice inevitably reveal the ways in which prejudice is linked with competition and social injustice, and the role that religious and political ideologies play in shaping attitudes. This book provides an accessible yet scholarly review of social psychological theory on prejudice with the goal of integrating recent theories about its causes. Several emerging trends and lines of research are highlighted in this book, including: (1) Essentialist and social constructivist approaches to understanding differences; (2) Evolutionary and intergroup explanations of prejudice; (3) Ideological systems and developmental theories; (4) Cognitive processes and social neuroscience; and (5) Links among prejudice, environmental issues, and speciesism. In addition to its rich theoretical content, the book reviews research on reducing prejudice, with an emphasis on intergroup and institutional strategies. It also discusses collective action to promote social justice and the difficult question of the possible drawbacks of prejudice reduction. With its thoughtfully selected reviews, numerous real-life examples, and novel content, this book will appeal to students and their educators, as well as researchers surveying or investigating the field of prejudice and diversity"--Publicity materials. Abstract: "Historically, developmental psychologists have tended to focus on the effects of understimulation and certain types of deprivation on child development. More recently, researchers have shifted their attention to the deleterious effects of overstimulation or "chaos" in children's environment. Chaos refers to physical and social settings characterized by crowding, noise, unpredictability or a lack of routines, and instability or unplanned changes. This book is an important first step in exploring how, why, and at what level, chaos at the familial and societal level affects children. The contributors to the volume honor the work of Urie Bronfenbrenner, whose bioecological theory of human development provides a rich conceptual basis for understanding the impact of environmental chaos. The theory permits study at what Bronfenbrenner called the "microsystem" level (family, school, and day care), as well as at higher-order levels that include parents' work environments, the child's local neighborhood, and his or her cultural milieu. Within this framework, the role of individual characteristics and other moderating and mediating mechanisms can be fruitfully explored, as well as how chaos relates to poverty and culture. These elements are explored both as independent influences and collective, interrelated influences. The topics explored in this book will be thought provoking for developmental scientists interested in the study of environmental contributions to development, as well as practitioners and policymakers interested in promoting children's healthy development"--Jacket. Abstract: "This volume is an effort to cast a wide net in order to bring the meanings of others to the forefront of psychological investigation, to illuminate what is an often obscured background. Efforts to measure relationships, although they have produced large bodies of research studies, inevitably simplify and decontextualize relationship. Relationships require narrative to evoke the empathy and multilayered attention necessary for one person to have some sense of the nature of someone else's relational experience. The authors of the chapters in this volume use a range of narrative modes of inquiry to describe and then conceptualize significant aspects of interpersonal experience. All begin with some sort of text that expresses textured aspects of human relationship and then initiate a conversation between the contextualized phenomenological account and a psychological understanding.

Abstract: "Preventing Violence: Research and Evidence-Based Intervention Strategies is the only book available that offers current data-based analyses from leaders in violence prevention with a strong scientific perspective. Contributors examine a range of violence that occurs in our culture, including child maltreatment, youth violence, intimate partner violence, and suicide. Because evidence shows that a cycle of violence seems to begin with child maltreatment--which includes not only child physical and sexual abuse but also neglect--the contributors examine the possibility of connecting the disparate intervention areas in both research and practice and often draw on large-scale studies conducted by the government in their discussions of approaches to violence prevention. The suggested research and intervention programs highlight the role of cultural competence, a phenomenon whose importance has been determined empirically. Violence is a serious public health problem that can be prevented. This book offers methods to accomplish that goal through programs at all levels of society from school-based interventions to changes in government policy. Psychologists, public health officials, and policymakers working to stop violence will find it an invaluable resource for science-based solutions"--Jacket. Abstract: "In Sex and Love in Intimate Relationships, the authors explore the dimensions of sexuality and love. Drawing on their 40 years of combined clinical experience and a unique longitudinal study of couples and families, they propose that sexual problems are largely related to defenses acquired through painful childhood experiences. They describe the effects of the core defense, that is, the fantasy bond, which is an illusion of connection to the mother or primary caregiver. The fantasy bond is later transferred to a romantic partner and predisposes alienation in the relationship. The authors explain how secondary defenses in the form of critical internal "voices" support negative views of the self and others, interfering with closeness and intimacy. In clear language and conceptualization and through the liberal use of case material from therapy sessions, the authors show how individuals can be helped to overcome these challenges and become physically and emotionally closer to their partners. The authors provide therapists with a cognitive-affective-behavioral technique for treating couples. Sex and Love in Intimate Relationships is thought-provoking reading for anyone interested in what sustains a loving and fulfilling sexual relationship"--Jacket.
