    Abstract: Over the past fifteen years, the Centre for Research Architecture at Goldsmiths, University of London, has brought together established and emergent scholars who convene to work with each other and share their ideas and insights. These assemblies have produced a space of critical encounter for developing new investigative methods, expanded spatial practices, and speculative propositions designed to respond to and intervene in the urgent political conditions of our time. This new series invites the reader into this ever-evolving pedagogical context. Each book is organized around a specific spatial issue and brings together a heterogeneous range of materials and contributors. The first work in the series, Border Environments, explores the entanglement of ecology and migration. It examines the interplay between discriminatory politics, emergent technologies, and bordering practices within the context of (constructed) natures by highlighting a variety of interventions, investigative techniques, visual projects, and modes of witnessing that address the role of both human and more-than-human actors in border struggles. As such, the book is also a provocation that can be used to identify and organize new lines of struggle connecting environmental and mobility justice.

    Abstract: "This book offers fresh theoretical, methodological and empirical analyses of the relation between religion and the city in the South Asian context. Uniting the historical with the contemporary by looking at the medieval and early modern links between religious faith and urban settlement, the book brings together a series of focused studies of the mixed and multiple practices and spatial negotiations of religion in the South Asian city. It looks at the various ways in which contemporary religious practice affects urban everyday life, commerce, craft, infrastructure, cultural forms, art, music and architecture. Chapters draw upon original empirical study and research to analyse the foundational, structural, material and cultural connections between religious practice and urban formations or flows. The book argues that Indian cities are not 'postsecular' in the sense that the term is currently used in the modern West, but that there has been, rather, a deep, even foundational link between religion and urbanism, producing different versions of urban modernity. Questions of caste, gender, community, intersectional entanglements, physical proximity, private or public ritual, processions and prayer, economic and political factors, material objects, and changes in the built environment, are all taken into consideration, and the book offers an interdisciplinary analysis of different historical periods, different cities, and different types of religious practice. Filling a gap in the literature by discussing a diversity of settings and faiths, the book will be of interest to scholars on South Asian history, sociology, literary analysis, urban studies and cultural studies

    Abstract: "By integrating conversations across disciplines, especially focusing on classical studies and Jewish and Christian studies, this volume addresses several imbalances in scholarship on reading and textual activity in the ancient Mediterranean. Contributors intentionally place Jewish, Christian, Roman, Greek, and other reading circles back into their encompassing historical context, avoiding subdivisions along modern subject lines, divisions still bearing the ideological marks of ecclesiastical interests. In their examination, contributors avoid dwelling upon traditional methodological debates over orality vs. literacy and social classifications of literacy, instead turning their attention to the social-historical: groups of people, circles and networks, strata and class, scribal culture, material culture, epigraphic and papyrological evidence, functions and types of literacy and the social relationships that all of these entail. Reale Handlungspraxen und kulturelle Vorgaben befinden sich heute in einem – durchaus produktiven – Spannungsverhältnis
    Abstract: Society's view of dying and death no longer corresponds to the fixed images with which the corresponding areas of knowledge were associated until a few years ago. For a long time, the supposedly ›unambiguous‹ levels of meaning of this complex issue were stable enough to paralyse social scientific research. For some time now, however, discourses have been emerging that (re)question the normative elements of funeral culture, the treatment of dead bodies and cremation ashes, the labelling of medical diagnoses, and the determination of the boundary between life and death.     Abstract: Colonial and imperial powers have often portrayed arid lands as "empty" spaces ready to be occupied, exploited, extracted, and polluted. Despite the undeniable presence of human and nonhuman lives and forces in desert territories, the "regime of emptiness" has inhabited, and is still inhabiting, many imaginaries. Deserts Are Not Empty challenges this colonial tendency, questions its roots and ramifications, and remaps the representations, theories, histories, and stories of arid lands—which comprise approximately one-third of the Earth’s land surface.     Abstract: "What have different ideas about sex and gender meant for people throughout the history of the Middle East and North Africa? This book traces sex and desire in Muslim cultures through a collection of chapters that span the 9th to 21st centuries. Looking at spaces and periods where sexual norms and the categories underpinning them emerge out of multiple subjectivities, the book shows how people constantly negotiate the formulation of norms, their boundaries and their subversion. It demonstrates that the cultural and political meanings of sexualities in Muslim cultures - as elsewhere - emerge from very specific social and historical contexts. The first part of the book examines how people constructed, discussed and challenged sexual norms from the Abbasid to the Ottoman period. The second part looks at literary and cinematic Arab cultural production as a site for the construction and transgression of gender norms. The third part builds on feminist historiography and social anthropology to question simplistic dichotomies and binaries. Each of the contributions shows how understanding of sexualities and the subjectivities that evolve from them are rooted in the mutually-constitutive relationships between gender and political power. In identifying the plurality of discourses on desires, the book goes beyond the dichotomy of norm and transgression to glimpse what different sexual norms have meant at different times across the Middle East."

    Abstract: This book critically reviews state-religion models and the ways in which different countries manage religious diversity, illuminating different responses to the challenges encountered in accommodating both majorities and minorities. The country cases encompass eight world regions and 23 countries, offering a wealth of research material suitable to support comparative research. Each case is analysed in depth looking at historical trends, current practices, policies, legal norms and institutions. By looking into state-religion relations and governance of religious diversity in regions beyond Europe, we gain insights into predominantly Muslim countries (Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey, Indonesia, Malaysia), countries with pronounced historical religious diversity (India and Lebanon) and into a predominantly migrant pluralist nation (Australia). These insights can provide a basis for re-thinking European models and learning from experiences of governing religious diversity in other socio-economic and geopolitical contexts. Key analytical and comparative reflections inform the introduction and concluding chapters. This volume offers a research and study companion to better understand the connection between state-religion relations and the governance of religious diversity in order to inform both policy and research efforts in accommodating religious diversity. Given its accessible language and further readings provided in each chapter, the volume is ideally suited for undergraduate and graduate students. It will also be a valuable resource for researchers working in the wider field of ethnic, migration, religion and citizenship studies

    Abstract: "In the late 1970s Islam regained its force by generating novel forms of piety and forging new paths in politics throughout the world, including China. The Islamic revival in China, which came to fruition in the 2000s and the 2010s, prompted increases in government suppression but also intriguing resonances with the broader Muslim world-from influential theoretical and political contestations over Muslim women's status, the popularization of mass media and the appearance of new patterns of consumption, to increases in transnational Muslim migration. Although China does not belong to the "Islamic world" as it is conventionally understood, China's Muslims have strengthened and expanded their global connections and impact. Such significant shifts in Chinese Muslim life have received scant scholarly attention until now.

    Abstract: The contributions to the present volume show that the countries that are often presented in the literature as forming part of a stereotypical and seemingly monolithic “Islamic world” in fact represent considerable diversity. From Iran to Senegal, we encounter a vast array of social and religious structures, historical trajectories, political regimes and relative positions of societies and individuals. We encounter also, in many different and often unexpected ways, the individual in multiple contexts. The present volume presents perspectives on everyday life in Muslim societies beyond the spectacular. From a broad academic background in Islamic and Iranian studies, social anthropology, sociology, philosophy and history, its contributors show that everyday life as well as religious practice in countries as diverse as Senegal, Niger, Egypt, Tunisia and Iran is not informed by one single “Islamic” tradition, but rather by multiple and often surprisingly different modes of religiosity and non-religiosity.

    Abstract: Verkehr ist Kultur.     Abstract: "Islam through Objects represents the state of the field of Islamic material cultural studies. With contributions from scholars of religion, anthropologists, art historians, folklorists, historians, and other disciplines, Anna Bigelow brings together a wide range of perspectives on Islamic materiality to debunk myths of Islamic aversion to material aspects of religion. Each chapter focuses on a single object in daily use by Muslims - prayer beads, coins, amulets, a cistern well, clothing, jewellery, bodily and domestic adornments - to consider both generic and particular aspects of the object in question. These narratives will engage the reader by describing and analyzing each object in terms of its provenance, materials, uses, and history, as well as the broader history, variety and uses of the object in Islamic history and cultures. Temporal, regional, and sectarian variations in the styles, uses, and theological perspectives are also considered.     Abstract: Noch wird in der wissenschaftlichen und öffentlichen Beschäftigung mit dem Islam unterschieden zwischen unscheinbaren "Hinterhofmoscheen" und den sichtbaren "Moscheeneubauten". Gemeint sind damit die religiösen Kultstätten der seit mehr als einem halben Jahrhundert in Deutschland lebenden Muslime. Es wird Zeit, diese architektonische und sozial immer noch wirksame Unterscheidung von unsichtbaren "Hinterhofmoscheen" und sichtbaren "Moscheeneubauten" ad acta zu legen. Sie wird der Komplexität des Phänomens in keiner Weise gerecht. Denn Muslime verstecken sich nicht in Hinterhöfen und machen sich auch nicht einfach nur durch Moscheen mit Kuppeln und Minarett in der Stadt sichtbar: Sie gehen seit Beginn der Entstehung der ersten Gebetsstätten im Migrationskontext mit ihren Architekturen komplexe Bündnisse ein. Moscheen sind fast nie nur Orte des rituellen Gebets. Sie interdisziplinär, also sozial-, kultur-, islam-, architektur- und erziehungswissenschaftlich, zu verstehen - dazu möchte das Buch einen Beitrag leisten

Dies umfasst sowohl Grundbegriffe, die Vielfalt technisierter Menschenbilder, technisierte Praktiken sowie die Technisierung von Sinnen und Kompetenzen. Vorgestellt werden zudem wichtige Vertreter einer Technikanthropologie seit der Frühen Neuzeit. Mit einer interdisziplinären Herangehensweise arbeitet das Handbuch verschiedene Problematisierungen von Menschen und Maschinen, die gerade heute virulent sind, historisch und systematisch auf. Dabei steht die klassische anthropologische Frage nach dem "Menschen" in den jeweiligen Ausprägungen und Wandlungen mit Blick auf Technik im Zentrum. Diese Betrachtung geht nicht von einem einzigartigen, unveränderlichen Wesen des Menschen aus, sondern untersucht die historischen Veränderungen des Menschen durch und mit Technik. Gerade im Zeichen neuer Technologien wie der Digitalisierung und Künstlicher Intelligenz-Forschung steht das Mensch-Maschinen-Verhältnis erneut auf der Agenda.     Abstract: This handbook provides an overview of approaches to, and methods and topics on a historical anthropology of technology. This includes basic concepts, the variety of human technical concepts, technicised practices and the technicisation of senses and skills. Furthermore, it presents important representatives of an anthropology of technology since the early modern period. With its interdisciplinary approach, this volume historically and systematically approaches various problems relating to humans and machines that are currently being debated. At the centre of attention is the quintessential anthropological question of what a ‘human being’ is with respect to technology. However, this consideration does not derive from the concept of a unique, unchanging essence of man, but examines the historical changes of man through and with technology. Particularly in light of new technologies such as digitisation and artificial intelligence research, the relationship between humans and machines is once again on the agenda, in which humans and humanity seem to be the subject of discussion

Eine Auseinandersetzung mit antisemitischen Haltungen, Denkfiguren und Handlungen sowie ein faktenbasiertes Wissen gehören daher in den Kanon politischer Bildung. Dieses Buch erscheint in einem historischen Kontext, in dem Risse in der Fassade des gemeinsamen deutsch-jüdischen Gebäudes erkennbar geworden sind. Mit dem zunehmenden zeitlichen Abstand zum Nationalsozialismus und dem Verblassen der Erinnerung nehmen Geschichtskonstruktionen, Verzerrungen oder Leugnungen der historischen Geschehnisse zu. Subtile antisemitische Einstellungen werden immer häufiger durch offen vorgetragene juden- und israelfeindliche Positionen überlagert. Der Band diskutiert aktuelle Antisemitismus-Studien in Hinblick auf ihre pädagogischen Konsequenzen aus wissenschaftlichen, politischen und bildungspolitischen Perspektiven

    Abstract: Christmas is an unrivalled annual celebration. This volume traces its history from the early Church's decision to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on 25 December through the medieval period and all the way into the 21st century. It explores Christmas all around the world and presents the variety of ways that worshipping communities observe the festival from Roman Catholics to Reformed Protestants. All of the features of the Nativity Story are covered from the Holy Family to the Magi and the Star, as are the biblical and theological unpinning of Christmas, including the doctrines of the Incarnation and the Virgin Birth. Carols and music, as well as paintings, literature, and film and television, are all treated by experts, as are the more cultural aspects of the season ranging from Santa Claus to Christmas trees to food and drink.

    Abstract: "The manuscript is an interdisciplinary collection of essays that examine the intertwining of religion and race among Asian American communities within a broad context of the United States. Both religion and race, as social constructs, have in their relation to one another been foundational for the formation of American identities, and for Asian Americas, largely reflected through exclusion and marginalization. Despite growing interest, religion continues to be an understudied, but vital dimension of Asian American experiences, and this volume is concerned about how Muslim, Hindu, and Sikh communities have navigated the post-9/11 period compounded by the election of Donald Trump as President of the United States. Contributors examine the role of popular culture and also draw upon and the extensive data collected by the Pew Research Center for the largest Asian American communities. What emerges are rich, complex, and multi-dimensional explorations of how religion and race have been significant forces in the lives of Asian Americans"--

    Abstract: The Routledge Handbook of Minorities in the Middle East gathers a diverse team of international scholars, each of whom provides unique expertise into the status and prospects of minority populations in the region. The dramatic events of the past decade, from the Arab Spring protests to the rise of the Islamic state, have brought the status of these populations onto centre stage. The overturn of various long-term autocratic governments in states such as Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, and Yemen, and the ongoing threat to government stability in Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon have all contributed to a new assertion of majoritarian politics amid demands for democratization and regime change. In the midst of the dramatic changes and latent armed conflict, minority populations have been targeted, marginalized, and victimized. Calls for social and political change have led many to contemplate the ways in which citizenship and governance may be changed to accommodate minorities - or indeed if such change is possible. At a time when the survival of minority populations, and the utility of the label minority has been challenged, this handbook answers the following set of research questions: What are the unique challenges of minority populations in the Middle East? How do minority populations integrate into their host societies, both as a function of their own internal choices, and as a response to majoritarian consensus on their status? Finally, given their inherent challenges, and the vast, sweeping changes that have taken place in the region over the past decade, what is the future of these minority populations? What impact have minority populations had on their societies, and to what extent will they remain prominent actors in their respective settings?

    Abstract: This volume considers the New Testament in the light of anthropological study, in particular the current trend towards theological anthropology. The book begins with three essays that survey the context in which the New Testament was written, covering the Old Testament, early Jewish writings and the literature of the Greco -Roman world. Chapters then explore the anthropological ideas found in the texts of the New Testament and in the thought of it writers, notably that of Paul. The volume concludes with pieces from Brian S. Roser and Ephraim Radner who bring the whole exploration together by reflecting on the theological implications of the New Testament's anthropological ideas. Taken together, the chapters in this volume address the question that humans have been asking since at least the earliest days of recorded history: what does it mean to be human? The presence of this question in modern theology, and its current prevalence in popular culture, makes this volume both a timely and relevant interdisciplinary addition to the scholarly conversation around the New Testament
