    Abstract: When Alfred Kinsey's massive studies Sexual Behavior in the Human Male and Sexual Behavior in the Human Female appeared in 1948 and 1953, their detailed data spurred an unprecedented public discussion of the nation's sexual practices and ideologies. As they debated what behaviors were normal or average, abnormal or deviant, Cold War Americans also celebrated and scrutinized the state of their nation, relating apparent changes in sexuality to shifts in its political structure, economy, and people. American Sexual Character employs the studies and the myriad responses they evoked to examine national debates about sexuality, gender, and Americanness after World War II. Focusing on the mutual construction of postwar ideas about national identity and sexual life, this wide-ranging, shrewd, and lively analysis explores the many uses to which these sex surveys were put at a time of extreme anxiety about sexual behavior and its effects on the nation. Looking at real and perceived changes in masculinity, female sexuality, marriage, and homosexuality, Miriam G. Reumann develops the notion of "American sexual character," sexual patterns and attitudes that were understood to be uniquely American and to reflect contemporary transformations in politics, social life, gender roles, and culture. She considers how apparent shifts in sexual behavior shaped the nation's workplaces, homes, and families, and how these might be linked to racial and class differences.

    Abstract: Historically, canonic studies of ritual have discussed and explained ritual organization, action, and transformation primarily as representations of broader cultural and social orders. In the present, as in the past, less attention is given to the power of ritual to organize and effect transformation through its own dynamics. Breaking with convention, the contributors to this volume were asked to discuss ritual first and foremost in relation to itself, in its own right, and only then in relation to its socio-cultural context. The results attest to the variable capacities of rites to effect transformation through themselves, and to the study of phenomena in their own right as a fertile approach to comprehending ritual dynamics.

    Note: Der vorliegende Band geht auf eine Tagung der Sektion "Sozialstrukturanalyse und soziale Ungleichheit" über "Ungleichheit und Gerechtigkeit" vom 18.-19. Juni 1993 an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin zurück. Für die Drucklegung wurden alle Vorträge gründlich überarbeitet und noch einige Beitrage zusätzlich mit aufgenommen, um die Konzeption des Buches abzurunden. Ziel dieses Sammelbandes ist es, das soziologische Interesse für Probleme der Gerechtigkeit/Ungerechtigkeit zu wecken und zu einer interdisziplinären Zusammenarbeit von Philosophie, Psychologie, Rechts- und Sozialwissenschaften anzuregen. Es gilt die Wasserscheide in der Soziologie zu überwinden, sich nur mit Gleichheit/Ungleichheit zu beschäftigen, die Reflexion über Gerechtigkeit/Ungerechtigkeit indes, welche häufig den uneingestandenen Hintergrund von Ungleichheitsstudien bilden, einfach zu unterlassen. Uns scheint, daß der Zeitpunkt zur Begründung einer interdisziplinär angelegten sozialwissenschaftlichen Gerechtigkeitsforschung gekommen ist. Wir danken der Humboldt-Universitat, daß sie uns ihre Raume zur Verfügung gestellt, und dem Fakultätsinstitut für Sozialwissenschaften, daß es die Tagung großzügig finanziell unterstützt hat.     Abstract: From the "Red Menace" to Tiananmen Square, the United States and China have long had an emotionally tumultuous relationship. Richard Madsen's frank and innovative examination of the moral history of U.S.-China relations targets the forces that have shaped this surprisingly strong tie between two strikingly different nations. Combining his expertise as a sinologist with the vision of America developed in Habits of the Heart and The Good Society, Madsen studies the cultural myths that have shaped the perceptions of people of both nations for the past twenty-five years. The dominant American myth about China, born in the 1960s, foresaw Western ideals of economic, intellectual, and political freedom emerging triumphant throughout the world. Nixon's visit to China nurtured this idea, and by the 1980s it was helping to sustain America's hopefulness about its own democratic identity. Meanwhile, Chinese popular culture has focused on the U.S., especially American consumer goods--Coca-Cola was described by the People's Daily as "capitalism concentrated in a bottle." Today we face a new global institutional and cultural environment in which the old myths no longer work for either Americans or Chinese. Madsen provides a framework for us to think about the relationship between democratic ideals and economic/political realities in the post-Cold War world. What he proposes is no less than the foundation for building a public philosophy for the emerging world order

    Abstract: Linking the personal and the political, Anna Clark depicts the making of the working class in Britain as a "struggle for the breeches." The late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries witnessed significant changes in notions of masculinity and femininity, the sexual division of labor, and sexual mores, changes that were intimately intertwined with class politics. By integrating gender into the analysis of class formation, Clark transforms the traditional narrative of working-class history. Going beyond the sterile debate about whether economics or language determines class consciousness, Clark integrates working people's experience with an analysis of radical rhetoric. Focusing on Lancashire, Glasgow, and London, she contrasts the experience of artisans and textile workers, demonstrating how each created distinctively gendered communities and political strategies. Workers faced a "sexual crisis," Clark claims, as men and women competed for jobs and struggled over love and power in the family. While some radicals espoused respectability, others might be homophobes, wife-beaters, and tyrants at home a radical's love of liberty could be coupled with lust for the life of a libertine. Clark shows that in trying to create a working class these radicals closed off the movement to women, instead adopting a conservative rhetoric of domesticity and narrowing their notion of the working class

Hierzu gehören der unmittelbare Austausch mit anderen Personen ebenso wie die über Gruppen und Organisationen, Institutionen und "die" Gesellschaft vorstrukturierten Beziehungsmuster des sozialen Handelns. Das Adjektiv sozial heißt in soziologischer Perspektive lediglich: auf den oder die Mitmenschen (lat. socius = Gefährte) bezogen, also zwischenmenschlich. Damit ist der in alltäglichen, öffentlichen und privaten Situationen zu beobachtende Tatbestand gemeint, daß das soziale Handeln der Menschen nach bestimmten Regeln und in bestimmten Formen abläuft und daß diese Regeln und Handelns Formen eine gewisse Konstanz haben. Diese Zusammenhange sind für jedes Individuum einsichtig, da praktisch erfahrbar und kognitiv (erkenntnismäßig) nachvollziehbar. Mit diesem Alltagsverständnis kann sich die Soziologie jedoch nicht zufriedengeben. Sie fragt nach den Grundlagen der wechselseitigen Orientierung des Verhaltens und den Bedingungen seiner Kontinuität.

    Note: Der Gegenstand dieses Buches sind die Sozialwissenschaften. Damit meinen wir insbesondere - in alphabetischer Reihenfolge -Erziehungswissenschaft, Ethnologie, Geschichtswissenschaft, Kriminologie, Kulturanthropologie, Politikwissenschaft, Psychologie, Soziologie, Völkerkunde und Wirtschaftswissenschaft. Das Ziel des Buches besteht jedoch nicht in einer Einführung in diese Wissenschaften oder in einer Darstellung der Ergebnisse oder Methoden dieser Wissenschaften. Es geht vielmehr darum, wie diese Wissenschaften arbeiten und arbeiten sollten. Dies ist die Fragestellung der Methodologie bzw. Wissenschaftstheorie - beide Ausdrücke werden im folgenden synonym verwendet. Man versteht diese Fragestellung am besten, wenn man sie mit den Fragestellungen der empirischen Wissenschaften wie z. B. der Soziologie vergleicht. Diese Wissenschaften beobachten die Realität: Es werden z. B. Theorien formuliert und es wird versucht festzustellen, inwieweit diese Theorien mit der Realität übereinstimmen. Die Methodologen haben ein anderes Ziel: Sie nehmen sozusagen die Vogelperspektive ein. D. h. sie beobachten das, was Sozialwissenschaftler tun, und unterziehen deren Tun einer kritischen Analyse. Die Methodologie versucht also nicht direkt, die Sozialwissenschaften weiterzuentwickeln, indem sie z. B. neue Theorien vorschlägt oder versucht, neue Methoden zu entwickeln. Sie befaßt sich vielmehr damit, was die Sozialwissenschaften tun. Dies bedeutet jedoch nicht, daß die Methodologie für die Weiterentwicklung der Sozialwissenschaften bedeutungslos ist. Das Gegenteil ist der Fall, wie wir im folgenden Kapitel sehen werden: Ein Sozialwissenschaftler, der sich mit der Methodologie beschäftigt hat, wird viele Fehler, die zu fragwürdigen theoretischen Aussagen und Entscheidungen führen, vermeiden

Den vorläufig letzten Nekrolog auf Georg Lukacs hat der amerikanische So­ ziologieprofessor Daniel Bell anläßlich der Rezension einer umfassenden Lukacs­ Biographie von Arpad Kadarkay angestimmt. Dieser Text ist dann ins Deutsche übersetzt und - bezeichnenderweise im berüchtigten Pressesommerloch - von der 'Zeit' (Nr. 39, v. 18. 9. 1992) publiziert worden. Georg Lukacs, «Volkskommissar der ungarischen Räterepublik, Prediger des Terrors, großer Philosoph und Leh­ reD〉 - Stereotype, die haften bleiben, deren vielfache Wiederholung schließlich das Erinnerungsvermögen paralysiert. Bell nutzt den breiten Raum, um noch einmal gründlich und grundsätzlich an der paradigmatischen Figur Lukacs' mit den Grundtorheiten der Intellektuellen unseres Jahrhunderts abzurechnen: mit ihrer Verfiihrbarkeit und ihrem Wahn zum Wissen. «Welche Überzeugung)), so resümiert Bell, «könnte für Intellektuelle verführerischer sein als die, daß man die Wahrheit besitzen und zugleich verspeisen könne?     Note: Klaus Neumann-Braun, Stefan Aufenanger, Wolfgang Hoffmann-Riem und Michael Charlton Audio-visuelle Werbung für Kinder: gute Gründe zur Besorgnis? Das vorliegende Projekt "Fernsehwerbung und Kinder" steht gegenwärtig sicherlich nicht allein in der entsprechenden nationalen und internationalen Forschungslandschaft. Es ist jedoch überraschend, feststellen zu müssen, daß die Projekte zum Thema "audio-visuelle Werbung und Kinder" recht spärlich gesat sind. Dies muß irritieren, da die Werbeaktivitäten der Wirtschaft auf dem Medien- und Konsummarkt für Kinder über die Jahre hinweg ständig zugenommen haben, die kommerzielle "Begleitforschung" ebenfalls expandierte, warnend die sozialwissenschaftliche Grundlagenforschung mit dieser Entwicklung nicht Schritt gehalten hat. Dies ist zu konstatieren mit Blick auf die internationale Diskussion, folgt man beispielsweise den Ausführungen von Kline (1991), aber auch mit Blick auf die nationale Diskussion: Nach langen Jahren der "Latenz" erschien erst wieder 1993 ein größeres wissenschaftliches Gutachten unter dem Titel "Kinder und Werbung" (Baacke, Sander & Vollbrecht, 1993). Dieses Gutachten ist als ein umfassendes einzuschätzen, in dem es den Autoren darum geht, den aktuellen Forschungsstand zu dokumentieren. Sie tun dies mit dem erklärten Ziel, Forschungsdesiderate aufzuzeigen. Es wird in den Ausführungen dafür votiert, die traditionelle Stimulus­ Response-Wirkungsforschung aufzugeben: Die Konzentration auf den Einzelspot und dessen kausale Wirkungen auf Kinder sei angesichts einer veränderten Lebenswelt der Kinder, aber auch angesichts neuerer Entwicklungen in der wissenschaftlichen Forschung obsolet geworden. Erstens habe sich - so die These - eine Entwicklung eingestellt, die auf eine Allgegenwärtigkeit und vor allem auch Unabgrenzbarkeit von Werbung für Kinder hinauslaufe
