    Kurzfassung: Emphasising a positive approach to dealing with terrorism (the carrot), this book provides a critique of deterrence policy (the stick) which can be ineffective and even counterproductive, and proposes three alternative and effective anti-terrorist policies: Decentralisation reduces vulnerability to terrorist attacks. A system with many different centres is more stable due to its diversity, enabling one part to substitute for another; Positive incentives can be offered to actual and prospective terrorists not to engage in violent acts. Incentives include: reintegrating terrorists into society, welcoming repentents and offering them valued opportunities; and Diverting attention by naming several terrorist groups potentially responsible for a particular terrorist act. The government thus supplies more information than the terrorist responsible would wish

    Kurzfassung: The book presents a unique combination of the study of contemporary and historical practices between Asia and Europe and brings forth some of the latest thinking on the subject. Recent debates have centered primarily on contemporary aspects of the Europe-Asia partnership in terms of international relations and economic linkages. The present volume complements this political and economic interest in Europe-Asia relationship by focusing on the academic, social and cultural connections between the two regions. The contributions in this volume have a contemporary focus but contextualize the themes within a historical perspective. They deal with academic discourses on the region, on modernity and entrepreneurship; they discuss the long-term exchange of knowledge in specific scientific fields; and they focus on the cultural interconnections in the area of film, literature and migration. The originality of this book lies in its interdisciplinary approach to the question of Asia-Europe and in its emphasis on the multifaceted complexity of the relationship between these two regions. Karen Joisten wendet sich diesem Problemkreis zu, indem sie das Konzept entwirft, der Mensch zeichne sich durch eine Doppelstruktur aus, die sprachlich in der Wendung Heim-weg zum Ausdruck gebracht wird. Während der Bestandteil Heim- auf die heimische Seite des Menschen verweist, die es ihm ermöglicht, Bindungen einzugehen und in sich zu wohnen, verweist der Bestandteil –weg auf die weghafte Seite des Menschen, die dazu führt, daß er permanent unterwegs sein muß, also bei keiner eingenommenen Haltung und Einsicht stehenbleiben kann. Im ersten Teil des Buches werden unterschiedliche Weisen des In-Beziehung-Seins des Menschen zum Raum, zur Zeit und zum Mitmenschen analysiert, sowohl in bezug auf seine heimhafte als auch auf seine weghafte Seite. Im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung stehen dabei die Grundphänomene Geborgenheit, Ruhe und Vertrauen. Zugleich werden vier Hauptwege, auf und in denen sich der Mensch primär bewegt und ausrichtet, gekennzeichnet: das Wandern in der Natur, das Gehen auf der Straße, das Fahren auf der Straße und das Surfen im Netz. Im zweiten Teil des Bandes setzt sich die Autorin mit grundlegenden philosophiehistorischen Antworten auf die Frage auseinander, was unter Heimat zu verstehen ist, bezieht sie auf die Deutung des Menschen und macht sie fruchtbar für die moderne Diskussion

    Anmerkung: Wie versuchen politische Sprecher die Medienagenda zu beeinflussen und wie reagieren die Journalisten auf solche Versuche? Was sind die strukturellen Bedingungen und die normativen Voraussetzungen der Interaktion von Medien und Politik in der Bundesrepublik und den USA? Diese Fragen versucht der Band zu beantworten, indem er die Einstellungen, Normen und Wertorientierungen von politischen Sprechern im Umfeld der Regierung und von Journalisten in Washington und Bonn analysiert. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass sich die politischen Kommunikationskulturen in beiden Ländern systematisch unterscheiden: Während das Verhältnis von Sprechern und Journalisten in den USA durch das Diktat der Medienregeln geprägt ist, orientieren sich die Kommunikationsbeziehungen in der Bundesrepublik an sozialem Konsens und letztlich an (partei)politischen Kalkülen. Dies liegt nicht zuletzt an den Strukturen des politischen Prozesses und des Mediensystems

    Kurzfassung: The Economics of Demand-Led Growth is a collection of specially written essays that develop and apply the theory of demand-led growth. Long-run growth is usually portrayed as a supply-determined process. The contributions to this volume, however, are rooted in the theory of demand-led growth. In addition to general discussions of the role of demand in the long-run, the volume contains essays in the Kaldorian and Kaleckian traditions, and a section on the relationship between demand-led growth and structural change. The conclusion reached is that current neglect of the role of demand in analyses of long-run growth is unwarranted

    Kurzfassung: Die Medien repräsentieren den älteren türkischen Migranten oft als traditionalistischen "Islam-Macho", der die Integration seiner Frau und seiner Töchter in die Gastgesellschaft bremst oder aktiv behindert. Diese weit verbreitete Stereotype beruht überwiegend auf "Bildern aus zweiter Hand". Im Unterschied dazu rückt die Publikation von Margret Spohn die türkischen Männer der ersten Migrantengeneration explizit in den Mittelpunkt der Analysen, wo sie als "Experten ihrer eigenen Geschichte" ausführlich selbst zu Wort kommen. Das feine Geflecht der hier erzählten und sensibel interpretierten Lebensgeschichten gibt Raum für die Reflexionen der Befragten über ihr Verhältnis zu den eigenen Eltern, zur Ehefrau, zu den Kindern und zu ihrem Leben in "zwei Heimaten". Damit liefert die Arbeit einen Schlüssel zu einem besseren Verständnis der Männer dieser Migrantengeneration, die vor fast einem halben Jahrhundert das Wagnis auf sich genommen haben, sich und ihren Familien in einem fremden Land eine Zukunft aufzubauen

    Kurzfassung: Begegnungen mit dem Fremden sind uns vertraut, auch wenn wir den Anderen dabei häufig als unvertraut wahrnehmen. Doch es sind weniger die fremden, als vielmehr die eigenen Wirklichkeitsvorstellungen und Umgangspraktiken, die den »Einen« zum »Anderen« machen. Die Autorin analysiert diese Praktiken der Fremdsetzung, die sich von der alltäglichen Etikettierung und Stigmatisierung bis hin zu wissenschaftlichen Praktiken des »Othering« erstrecken: Rekonstruiert werden sowohl Simmels »Händler«, Parks »Mulatte«, Schütz' »Emigrant«, Meads »signifikanter/verallgemeinerter Andere« als auch ethnografische Praktiken der »Ver-Anderung« des Fremden. Dabei wird der Blick immer wieder von den vertrauten Bildern des Fremden hin zu ihren subtilen Herstellungsprozessen und Resonanzen gelenkt, was es möglich macht, von den Konstruktionen des Fremden auf die Konstruktionen des Eigenen zurückzuschließen.

    Kurzfassung: Feminist analysis shows that the prevailing concepts of citizenship often assume a male citizen. How, then, does this affect the agency and participation of women in modern democracies? This insightful book, first published in 2000, presents a systematic comparison of the links between women's social rights and democratic citizenship in three different citizenship models: republican citizenship in France, liberal citizenship in Britain, and social citizenship in Denmark. Birte Siim argues that France still suffers from the contradictions of pro-natalist policy, and that Britain is only just starting to re-conceptualise the male-breadwinner model that is still a dominant feature. In her examination of the dual-breadwinner model in Denmark, Siim presents research about Scandinavian social policy and makes an important and timely contribution to debates in political sociology, social policy and gender studies
