Abstract: In Immeasurable Weather Sara J. Grossman explores how environmental data collection has been central to the larger project of settler colonialism in the United States. She draws on an extensive archive of historical and meteorological data spanning two centuries to show how American scientific institutions used information about the weather to establish and reinforce the foundations of a white patriarchal settler society. Grossman outlines the relationship between climate data and state power in key moments in the history of American weather science, from the nineteenth-century public data-gathering practices of settler farmers and teachers and the automation of weather data during the Dust Bowl to the role of meteorological satellites in data science's integration into the militarized state. Throughout, Grossman shows that weather science reproduced the natural world as something to be measured, owned, and exploited. This data gathering, she contends, gave coherence to a national weather project and to a notion of the nation itself, demonstrating that weather science's impact cannot be reduced to a set of quantifiable phenomena

Abstract: "In Riotous Deathscapes, Hugo Canham presents an understanding of life and death based on indigenous and black ways of knowing that he terms Mpondo theory. Focusing on amaMpondo people from rural Mpondoland, in South Africa's Eastern Cape, Canham outlines the methodologies that have enabled the community's resilience and survival. He assembles historical events and a cast of ancestral and living characters, following the tenor of village life to offer a portrait of how Mpondo people live and die in the face of centuries of abandonment, trauma, antiblackness, and death. Canham shows that Mpondo theory is grounded in and develops in relation to the natural world, where the river and hill are key sites of being and resistance. Central too, is the interface between ancestors and the living, in which life and death become a continuity and a boundlessness that white supremacy and neoliberalism cannot interdict. By charting a course of black life in Mpondoland, Canham tells a story of blackness on the African continent and beyond. Duke University Press Scholars of Color First Book Award Recipient"--

Abstract: For people who are living with disability, including various forms of chronic diseases and chronic pain, daily tasks like lifting a glass of water or taking off clothes can be difficult if not impossible. In Activist Affordances, Arseli Dokumacı draws on ethnographic work with differently disabled people whose ingenuity, labor, and artfulness allow them to achieve these seemingly simple tasks. Dokumacı shows how they use improvisation to imagine and bring into being more habitable worlds through the smallest of actions and the most fleeting of movements---what she calls "activist affordances." Even as an environment shrinks to a set of constraints rather than opportunities, the improvisatory space of performance opens up to allow disabled people to imagine that same environment otherwise. Dokumacı shows how disabled people's activist affordances present the potential for a more liveable and accessible world for all of us

Abstract: In Waste Works, Brenda Chalfin examines Ghana's planned city of Tema, theorizing about the formative role of waste infrastructure in urban politics and public life. Chalfin argues that at Tema's mid-century founding, a prime objective of governing authorities was to cultivate self-contained citizens by means of tightly orchestrated domestic infrastructure and centralized control of bodily excrement to both develop and depoliticize the new nation. Comparing infrastructural innovations across the city, Chalfin excavates how Tema residents pursue novel approaches to urban waste and sanitation built upon the ruins of the inherited order, profoundly altering the urban public sphere. Once decreed a private matter to be guaranteed by state authorities, excrement becomes a public issue, collectively managed by private persons. Pushing self-care into public space and extending domestic responsibility for public well-being and bodily outputs, popularly devised waste infrastructures are a decisive arena to make claims, build coalitions, and cultivate status. Confounding high-modernist ideals, excremental infrastructures unlock bodily waste's diverse political potentials

Abstract: "In Haunting Biology Emma Kowal recounts the troubled history of Western biological studies of Indigenous Australians and asks how we now might see contemporary genomics, especially that conducted by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander scientists. Kowal illustrates how the material persistence of samples over decades and centuries folds together the fates of different scientific methodologies. Blood, bones, hair, comparative anatomy, human biology, physiology, and anthropological genetics all haunt each other across time and space, together with the many racial theories they produced and sustained. The stories Kowal tells feature a variety of ghostly presences: a dead anatomist, a fetishized piece of hair hidden away in a war trunk, and an elusive white Indigenous person. By linking this history to contemporary genomics and twenty-first-century indigeneity, Kowal outlines the fraught complexities, perils, and potentials of studying Indigenous biological difference in the twenty-first century"--

Abstract: The contributors to Biopolitics, Geopolitics, Life investigate biopolitics and geopolitics as two distinct yet entangled techniques of settler colonial states across the globe, from the Americas and Hawai'i to Australia and Aotearoa/New Zealand. Drawing on literary and cultural studies, social sciences, political theory, visual culture, and film studies, they show how biopolitics and geopolitics produce norms of social life and land use that delegitimize and target Indigenous bodies, lives, lands, and political formations. Among other topics, the contributors explore the representations of sexual violence against Native women in literature, Indigenous critiques of the carceral state in North America, Indigenous Elders' refusal of dominant formulations of aging, the governance of Indigenous peoples in Guyana, the displacement of Guaraní in Brazil, and the 2016 formal acknowledgement of a government-to-government relationship between the US federal government and the Native Hawaiian community. Throughout, the contributors contend that Indigenous life and practices cannot be contained and defined by the racialization and dispossession of settler colonialism, thereby pointing to the transformative potential of an Indigenous-centered decolonization.Contributors. Abstract: "The radically humanistic essays of Arc of Interference refigure our sense of the real, the ethical, and the political in the face of mounting social and planetary upheavals. Creatively assembled around Arthur Kleinman's medical anthropological arc and eschewing hegemonic modes of intervention, they advance the notion of a care-ful ethnographic praxis of interference. To interfere is to dislodge ideals of naturalness, blast enduring binaries (human-nonhuman, self-other, us-them), and redirect technocratic agendas while summoning relational knowledge and the will to create community. The book's multiple ethnographic arcs of interference provide a vital conceptual toolkit for today's world and a badly needed moral perch to peer toward just horizons. Contributors. Abstract: In The Surrounds renowned urbanist AbdouMaliq Simone offers a new theorization of the interface of the urban and the political. Working at the intersection of Black studies, urban theory, and decolonial and Islamic thought, Simone centers the surrounds-those urban spaces beyond control and capture that exist as a locus of rebellion and invention. He shows that even in clearly defined city environments, whether industrial, carceral, administrative, or domestic, residents use spaces for purposes they were not designed for: schools become housing, markets turn into classrooms, tax offices transform into repair shops. The surrounds, Simone contends, are where nothing fits according to design. They are where forgotten and marginalized populations invent new relations and ways of living and being, continuously reshaping what individuals and collectives can do. Focusing less on what new worlds may come to be and more on what people are creating now, Simone shows how the surrounds are an integral part of the expansiveness of urban imagination

Abstract: "In Markets of Civilization Muriam Haleh Davis provides a history of racial capitalism, showing how Islam became a racial category that shaped economic development in colonial and postcolonial Algeria. French officials in Paris and Algiers introduced what Davis terms "a racial regime of religion" that subjected Algerian Muslims to discriminatory political and economic structures. These experts believed that introducing a market economy would modernize society and discourage anticolonial nationalism. Planners, politicians, and economists implemented reforms that sought to transform Algerians into modern economic subjects and drew on racial assumptions despite the formally color-blind policies of the French state. Following independence, convictions about the inherent link between religious beliefs and economic behavior continued to influence development policies. Algerian President Ahmed Ben Bella embraced a specifically Algerian socialism founded on Islamic principles, while French technocrats saw Algeria as a testing ground for development projects elsewhere in the global South. Highlighting the entanglements between race and religion, Davis demonstrates that economic orthodoxies helped fashion understandings of national identity on both shores of the Mediterranean during decolonization"--

Abstract: In Ruderal City Bettina Stoetzer traces relationships among people, plants, and animals in contemporary Berlin as they make their lives in the ruins of European nationalism and capitalism. She develops the notion of the ruderal-originally an ecological designation for the unruly life that inhabits inhospitable environments such as rubble, roadsides, train tracks, and sidewalk cracks-to theorize Berlin as a "ruderal city." Stoetzer explores sites in and around Berlin that have figured in German national imaginaries-gardens, forests, parks, and rubble fields-to show how racial, class, and gender inequalities shape contestations over today's uses and knowledges of urban nature. Drawing on fieldwork with gardeners, botanists, migrant workers, refugees, public officials, and nature enthusiasts while charting human and more-than-human worlds, Stoetzer offers a wide-ranging ethnographic portrait of Berlin's postwar ecologies that reveals emergent futures in the margins of European cities. Brimming with stories that break down divides between environmental perspectives and the study of migration and racial politics, Berlin's ruderal worlds help us rethink the space of nature and culture and the categories through which we make sense of urban life in inhospitable times

Abstract: Elizabeth A. Povinelli's inheritance was passed down not through blood or soil but through a framed map of Trentino, Alto Adige-the region where family's ancestral alpine village is found. Far more than a map hanging above the family television, the image featured colors and lines that held in place the memories and values fueling the Povinelli family's fraught relationships with the village and with each other. In her graphic memoir The Inheritance, Povinelli explores the events, traumas, and powers that divide and define our individual and collective pasts and futures. Weaving together stories of her grandparents' flight from their village in the early twentieth century to the fortunes of their knife-grinding business in Buffalo, New York, and her own Catholic childhood in a shrinking Louisiana woodlands of the 1960s and 1970s, Povinelli describes the serial patterns of violence, dislocation, racism and structural inequality that have shaped not only her life but the American story. Plumbing the messy relationships among nationality, ethnicity, kinship, religion, and belonging, The Inheritance takes us into the gulf between the facts of history and the stories we tell ourselves to survive and justify them

Abstract: "In Dear Science and Other Stories Katherine McKittrick presents a creative and rigorous study of black and anticolonial methodologies. Drawing on black studies, studies of race, cultural geography, and black feminism as well as a mix of methods, citational practices, and theoretical frameworks, she positions black storytelling and stories as strategies of invention and collaboration. She analyzes a number of texts from intellectuals and artists ranging from Sylvia Wynter to the electronica band Drexciya to explore how narratives of imprecision and relationality interrupt knowledge systems that seek to observe, index, know, and discipline blackness. Throughout McKittrick offers curiosity, wonder, citations, numbers, playlists, friendship, poetry, inquiry, song, grooves, and anticolonial chronologies as interdisciplinary codes that entwine with the academic form. Suggesting that black life and black livingness are, in themselves, rebellious methodologies, McKittrick imagines without totally disclosing the ways in which black intellectuals invent ways of living outside prevailing knowledge systems"--

Abstract: In eleven sharp essays, the contributors to Decay attend to the processes and experiences of symbolic and material decay in a variety of sociopolitical contexts across the globe. They examine decay in its myriad manifestations-biological, physical, organizational, moral, political, personal, and social and in numerous contexts, including colonialism and imperialism, governments and the state, racism, the environment, and infrastructure. The volume's topics are wide in scope, ranging from the discourse of social decay in contemporary Australian settler colonialism and the ways infrastructures both create and experience decay to cultural decay in the aftermath of the Sri Lankan civil war and the relations among individual, institutional, and societal decay in an American high-security prison. By using decay as a problematic and expounding its mechanisms, conditions, and temporalities, the contributors provide nuanced and rigorous means to more fully grapple with the exigencies of the current sociopolitical moment.Contributors. Abstract: "PAPER TRAILS is an edited volume that offers a critical analysis of various types of identity documentation, such as U.S. state-issued driver's licenses, to examine the power dynamics between migrants and traditional immigrant-receiving countries. In the United States, Canada, and the European Union, states are providing temporary and provisional legal statuses for migrants while making it increasingly harder for them to earn permanent legal status, a phenomenon known as "Global Apartheid." The effects of those temporary legal statuses on migrants are profound. This collection unites anthropologists, sociologists, geographers, and political scientists to examine the processes through which migrants are inscribed into official bureaucratic systems at various scales of government to show how states exert their power and how migrants navigate new systems of control. The project is divided into three parts, each consisting of three chapters. Part I outlines the basic features of identity documents in traditional immigrant-receiving countries. Nandita Sharma examines the historical construction of the category of "migrant" as opposed to "citizen," and Bridget Anderson considers immigration policies in the United Kingdom specifically. Doris Marie Provine and Monica W. Varsanyi analyze the political struggles around driver's licenses in Arizona and New Mexico. The second part of the book looks at how documents shape migrants' experiences of space and time, focusing on the multiple and unpredictable spaces in which migrants encounter the power of the state. Finally, part III examines how state control is mutable and seemingly never-ending, and it describes the numerous ways in which migrants and their advocates engage creatively with the state. This book will be of interest to scholars and students in migration studies, anthropology, sociology, geography, political science, and security studies"--

The "ritual economy" and "wasting of wealth"
Abstract: "RE-ENCHANTING MODERNITY is based on over twenty-five years of ethnography in the Chinese coastal city of Wenzhou and the surrounding towns. Combining methods from anthropology, religious studies, and history, author Mayfair Yang traces the reemergence of religious life and ritual following long periods of attempted secularization in China. She shows that rather than being opposed to the massive capitalist growth which has occurred in the Wenzhou region, these religious imaginaries and ritual practices are embedded in and inform economic development. Yang is interested in what motivates the return of these rituals in post-Maoist China and their complex relation to capitalist expansion in the area, one that as might be expected is different than the Weberian model from the west. She examines how gender is re-figured in the contemporary versions of these religious practices, given the changes in gender attitudes in the intervening years.
Abstract: Yang concludes that a scholar's notion of civil society must include religious and quasi-religious institutions - even, as in Wenzhou, when they are describing intensively modernized locations. After an opening placing the book amid current social theory, chapter one gives a brief social history of religious culture and secularization in Wenzhou from the late nineteenth century to the present and discusses Yang's ethnographic experience. Chapter two lays out the dynamic local economy of post-Mao Wenzhou that sets the context for the resurgence of ritual and religious life. The chapters which immediately follow provide ethnographic and historical accounts of different forms of religious and ritual life in contemporary Wenzhou: Popular Religion, Daoism, and Buddhism. Chapter six deals with grassroots-initiated temple organizations and religious associations, which, Yang proposes, represent an indigenous and religious civil society.

Abstract: How does Germany's legacy of anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, and Holocaust guilt affect the experiences of Israelis and Palestinians living there today? Co-authored by Katharina Galor, who is Israeli-German, and Sa'ed Atshan, who is Palestinian-American, THE MORAL TRIANGLE is an ethnography of immigrant communities in Berlin that shows how migration, trauma, and contemporary state politics are inextricably linked. The authors demonstrate that Germany's steadfast support for the state of Israel challenges Palestinian immigrants, who view this as an abdication of the country's moral responsibility. At the same time, they show that Berlin offers spaces and opportunities for interfaith activism and queer solidarity among Israelis, Germans, and Palestinians, offering a vision of restorative justice that can account for and respond to historical trauma. The book is divided into eleven short chapters, each of which takes up another aspect of the Israeli-Palestinian-German relationship.
Abstract: Atshan and Galor begin by drawing a comparison between the generational trauma resonating from the Holocaust and that from the Nakba, the word Palestinians use to refer to the loss of life and land that happened during the establishment of an Israeli state in 1948. Germans, Israelis, and Palestinians alike assume a narrative link between the Holocaust and the Israel/Palestine conflict - such that Holocaust commemoration programs in Germany, which disproportionately focus on Jewish victims of the Holocaust, are often linked to support for Zionism and the Israeli state. From the perspective of Palestinians in Berlin, this narrative complicates notions of victim and perpetrator, and raises questions about whether the German state has any moral responsibility towards Israel and its treatment of Palestinians.

Abstract: "Following a decade of United States bombing campaigns that obliterated northern Vietnam, East Germany helped Vietnam rebuild in an act of socialist solidarity. In Building Socialism Christina Schwenkel examines the utopian visions of an expert group of Vietnamese and East German urban planners who sought to transform the devastated industrial town of Vinh into a model socialist city. Drawing on archival and ethnographic research in Vietnam and Germany with architects, engineers, construction workers, and tenants in Vinh's mass housing complex, Schwenkel explores the material and affective dimensions of urban possibility, and the quick fall of Vinh's new built environment into unplanned obsolescence. She analyzes the tensions between aspirational infrastructure and postwar uncertainty to show how design models and practices that circulated between the socialist North and the decolonizing South underwent significant modification to accommodate alternative cultural logics and ideas about urban futurity. By documenting the building of Vietnam's first planned city and its aftermath of decay and repurposing, Schwenkel argues that underlying the ambivalent and often unpredictable responses to modernist architectural forms were anxieties about modernity and the future of socialism itself"--

Abstract: In 'Experiments with Empire' Justin Izzo examines how twentieth-century writers, artists, and anthropologists from France, West Africa, and the Caribbean experimented with ethnography and fiction in order to explore new ways of knowing the colonial and postcolonial world. Focusing on novels, films, and ethnographies that combine fictive elements and anthropological methods and modes of thought, Izzo shows how empire gives ethnographic fictions the raw materials for thinking beyond empire's political and epistemological boundaries. In works by French surrealist writer Michel Leiris and filmmaker Jean Rouch, Malian writer Amadou Hampate Ba, Martinican author Patrick Chamoiseau, and others, anthropology no longer functions on behalf of imperialism as a way to understand and administer colonized peoples; its relationship with imperialism gives writers and artists the opportunity for textual experimentation and political provocation. It also, Izzo contends, helps readers to better make sense of the complicated legacy of imperialism and to imagine new democratic futures.

Abstract: Considers the question of how to build a politics that recognizes the complexity of human entanglement but still finds ways for people to act. While it is politically and ethically important to recognize the inextricable entanglement of human and animal lives, ecological processes, and geopolitical inequalities, Eva Giraud argues that focusing on the irreducible complexity of relationality has often proven paralyzing, diffusing responsibilities in a way that has stymied political action. Drawing inspiration from forms of activism that seek to put non-anthropocentric theories of social justice into practice, Giraud proposes an "ethics of exclusion" as a way out of the impasse of relationality and entanglement. Her analysis shows how attention paid to who and what is excluded by systems, institutions, movements, and other materialized forms of entanglement offers us more effective avenues for political and ethical intervention"--

Abstract: Race mixture, or mestizaje, has played a critical role in the history, culture, and politics of Latin America. Peter Wade draws on a multidisciplinary research study in Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia. He shows how Latin American elites and outside observers have emphasized mixture's democratizing potential, depicting it as a useful resource for addressing problems of racism (claiming that race mixture undoes racial difference and hierarchy), while Latin American scientists participate in this narrative with claims that genetic studies of mestizos can help isolate genetic contributors to diabetes and obesity and improve health for all. Wade argues that, in the process, genomics produces biologized versions of racialized difference within the nation and the region, but a comparative approach nuances the simple idea that highly racialized societies give rise to highly racialized genomics. Wade examines the tensions between mixture and purity, and between equality and hierarchy in liberal political orders, exploring how ideas and scientific data about genetic mixture are produced and circulate through complex networks

Abstract: Engages in a hemispheric examination of the intersection of emancipation and settler colonialism in North America. The author shows how from the late eighteenth century through Reconstruction, emancipation efforts in the United States and present-day Canada were accompanied by attempts to relocate freed blacks to tropical regions, as black bodies were deemed to be more physiologically compatible with tropical climates. This logic conceived of freedom as a racially segregated condition based upon geography and climate. Regardless of whether freed people became tenant farmers in Sierra Leone or plantation laborers throughout the Caribbean, their relocation would provide whites with a monopoly over the benefits of settling indigenous land in temperate zones throughout North America. At the same time, black activists and intellectuals contested these geographic-based controls by developing alternative discourses on race and the environment. By tracing these negotiations of the transnational racialization of freedom, the author demonstrates the importance of considering settler colonialism and black freedom together while complicating the prevailing frames through which the intertwined histories of British and U.S. emancipation and colonialism have been understood

Abstract: In Street Archives and City Life Emily Callaci maps a new terrain of political and cultural production in mid- to late twentieth-century Tanzanian urban landscapes. While the postcolonial Tanzanian ruling party (TANU) adopted a policy of rural socialism known as Ujamaa between 1967 and 1985, an influx of youth migrants to the city of Dar es Salaam generated innovative forms of urbanism through the production and circulation of what Callaci calls street archives. These urban intellectuals neither supported nor contested the ruling party's anti-city philosophy; rather, they navigated the complexities of inhabiting unplanned African cities during economic crisis and social transformation through various forms of popular texts that included women's Christian advice literature, newspaper columns, self-published pulp fiction novellas, and song lyrics. Through these textual networks, Callaci shows how youth migrants and urban intellectuals in Dar es Salaam fashioned a collective ethos of postcolonial African citizenship. This spirit ushered in a revolution rooted in the city and its networks—an urban revolution that arose in spite of the nation-state's pro-rural ideology.
Abstract: About The Author: Emily Callaci is Assistant Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Abstract: "Building on the intellectual and political momentum that established the Critical Ethnic Studies Association, this Reader inaugurates a radical response to the appropriations of liberal multiculturalism while building on the possibilities enlivened by the historical work of Ethnic Studies. It does not attempt to circumscribe the boundaries of Critical Ethnic Studies; rather, it offers a space to promote open dialogue, discussion, and debate regarding the field's expansive, politically complex, and intellectually rich concerns. Covering a wide range of topics, from multiculturalism, the neoliberal university, and the exploitation of bodies to empire, the militarized security state, and decolonialism, these twenty-five essays call attention to the urgency of articulating a Critical Ethnic Studies for the twenty-first century." -- Publisher's description

Abstract: In Pipe Politics, Contested Waters, Lisa Björkman explores why water is chronically unavailable in Mumbai, India's economic and financial capital. She attributes water shortage to economic reforms that allowed urban development to ignore the water infrastructure, which means that in Mumbai, politics is often about water. - Winner, 2014 Joseph W. Elder Prize in the Indian Social SciencesDespite Mumbai's position as India's financial, economic, and cultural capital, water is chronically unavailable for rich and poor alike. Mumbai's dry taps are puzzling, given that the city does not lack for either water or financial resources. In Pipe Politics, Contested Waters, Lisa Björkman shows how an elite dream to transform Mumbai into a "world class" business center has wreaked havoc on the city's water pipes. In rich ethnographic detail, Pipe Politics explores how the everyday work of getting water animates and inhabits a penumbra of infrastructural activity-of business, brokerage, secondary markets, and sociopolitical networks-whose workings are reconfiguring and rescaling political authority in the city. Mumbai's increasingly illegible and volatile hydrologies, Björkman argues, are lending infrastructures increasing political salience just as actual control over pipes and flows becomes contingent on dispersed and intimate assemblages of knowledge, power, and material authority. These new arenas of contestation reveal the illusory and precarious nature of the project to remake Mumbai in the image of Shanghai or Singapore and gesture instead toward the highly contested futures and democratic possibilities of the actually existing city
