Abstract:
Obwohl im Märchen vom "Gevatter Tod" der Tod leibhaftig auftritt, kennt das Märchen den Tod eigentlich nicht. Die Helden werden zwar oft von ihren Neidern in den Tod geschickt, aber sie kommen als Verwandelte, Gereifte daraus wieder hervor. (Der Teufel mit den drei goldenen Haaren, Frau Holle) Die Mutter stirbt zwar, aber sie bleibt anwesend im Baum, der Aschenputtel mit vielen Wundergaben zum Glück verhilft. Nebenfiguren und Böse werden vernichtet, oder sie vernichten sich selbst: für die Hauptfiguren aber ist der Tod die große Verwandlung. Davon erzählen der "Froschkönig", der "Machandelboom" und die Märchen aller Völker auf immer neue und andere Weise. Die Moral des Märchens ist das Glück (Bausinger), und das bedeutet nicht Tod, sondern Leben.
