    Abstract: Ob Körperbewegung oder Tanzbewegung, ob Bewegung der Bilder, der Töne oder der Schrift, ob soziale oder politische Bewegung, der Begriff »Bewegung« wird in Ästhetik, Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften häufig benutzt. Anders als in den Naturwissenschaften aber ist dem konzeptuellen Stellenwert des Bewegungsbegriffs in den Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften bislang nur wenig Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt worden.Die interdisziplinäre Textsammlung verfolgt das Ziel, den Status quo des Begriffs in den Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften zu reflektieren und sein theoretisches Potenzial zu bestimmen. Sie geht von der Annahme aus, dass Bewegung nicht nur eine »physikalische Tatsache« und damit etwas quasi Natürliches ist, sondern ein soziales und kulturelles Konzept, das auf verschiedene Weise naturalisiert und essenzialisiert worden ist. Der Band präsentiert verschiedene Gebrauchsweisen des Begriffs und ermöglicht damit ein weiteres konzeptuelles Nachdenken über Bewegung als einen Begriff, dessen Rolle im »Tanz der Disziplinen« neu zu entfalten ist

    Abstract: Die Familienpolitik ist ein spätes Kind des deutschen Sozialstaats. Sie etablierte sich vor dem Hintergrund tief greifender gesellschaftlicher Umbrüche. Der kriegsbedingte Männermangel und der "Scheidungsboom" wurden nach 1945 als Zeichen der Auflösung traditioneller Familienformen gedeutet; später verwiesen Schlagworte wie "Pillenknick" und "sexuelle Revolution" auf einen weit reichenden Wertewandel in Familienfragen. Wie die Familienpolitik auf solche Herausforderungen reagierte, zeigt die Studie im Blick auf drei zentrale Konfliktfelder: den finanziellen Familienlastenausgleich, die Sexualaufklärung und Familienberatung sowie die Vorschulerziehung in Kindergärten. Während der Familienlastenausgleich auf Bundesebene zwischen 1965 und 1975 stagnierte, ist in den beiden anderen Bereichen ein Aufbruch zu beobachten, der in erster Linie von den Bundesländern getragen wurde. Dies wird am Beispiel Bayerns dargestellt. So kombiniert die Studie zwei große Themenkreise: Sie zeigt, wie die Familienpolitik zu einem eigenständigen Politikfeld mit vielfältigen Querschnittsaufgaben wurde, und sie lenkt das Augenmerk auf den Föderalismus als eine charakteristische Funktionsbedingung des deutschen Sozialstaates.

Doch Konflikte sind vielschichtig: Sie können sowohl zur Integration von Gesellschaften beitragen als auch diese zerbrechen. Die Anthropologie der Konflikte, zu der Georg Elwert weiterführende Thesen beigetragen hat, beleuchtet unterschiedliche Konfliktdynamiken und geht der Frage nach, unter welchen Bedingungen integrative, eskalative oder segregative Institutionen der Konfliktaustragung entstehen - oder wieder zerfallen.     Abstract: Wie wird Kultur soziale Praxis? Building on a survey of media institutions in eighteen West European and North American democracies, Hallin and Mancini identify the principal dimensions of variation in media systems and the political variables that have shaped their evolution. They go on to identify three major models of media system development, the Polarized Pluralist, Democratic Corporatist, and Liberal models; to explain why the media have played a different role in politics in each of these systems; and to explore the force of change that are currently transforming them.     Abstract: "This book is a study of ideas of cooperation and collective action. The point of departure is a prototypical story found in Rousseau's Discourse on Inequality. Rousseau contrasts hunting hare, where the risk of noncooperation is small but the reward is equally small, with hunting the stag, where maximum cooperation is required but the reward is much greater. Rational agents are pulled in one direction by considerations of risk and in another by considerations of mutual benefit."

    Abstract: The book presents a unique combination of the study of contemporary and historical practices between Asia and Europe and brings forth some of the latest thinking on the subject. Recent debates have centered primarily on contemporary aspects of the Europe-Asia partnership in terms of international relations and economic linkages.     Abstract: Das 20. Jahrhundert ist oft als das Jahrhundert der Gewalt bezeichnet worden. Daher mangelt es nicht an Gewaltphänomenen, die es genauer zu untersuchen gilt, als dies bislang geschehen ist. In diesem Band werden deswegen Gewalttaten aus neuen Perspektiven untersucht, neue Interpretationen ihrer Entstehung vorgestellt und neue Herausforderungen der sozialwissenschaftlichen Gewaltforschung debattiert. Folgende Fragen werden unter anderem in diesem gesellschaftspolitisch folgenreichen Buch behandelt: Kann der lange dominierende Begriff der physischen Gewalt überhaupt noch leitend sein, und muß die Gewaltanalyse sich nicht wieder stärker der strukturellen Gewalt zuwenden, da zunehmend eine »Gewalt ohne Gesicht« auftritt? Stecken die Ursachen im Gewalthandeln selbst, so daß Hinweise auf soziale Hintergründe etwa in die Irre führen? Verlieren sozialwissenschaftliche Forschungen aufgrund neuer biologischer Ansätze völlig an Relevanz? Biographische Informationen Wilhelm Heitmeyer, geboren 1945, war von 1996 bis 2013 Direktor des Instituts für interdisziplinäre Konflikt- und Gewaltforschung der Universität Bielefeld und arbeitet dort jetzt als Forschungsprofessor. In der edition suhrkamp gab er u. a. die Reihe Deutsche Zustände heraus. Wilhelm Heitmeyer, geboren 1945, war von 1996 bis 2013 Direktor des Instituts für interdisziplinäre Konflikt- und Gewaltforschung der Universität Bielefeld und arbeitet dort jetzt als Forschungsprofessor.     Abstract: Building upon his previous work and using Richard Hofstadter's The American Political Tradition as a model, Professor Moses has revised and brought together in this book essays that focus on the complexity of, and contradictions in, the thought of five major African-American intellectuals: Frederick Douglass, Alexander Crummell, Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. DuBois and Marcus M. Garvey. In doing so, he challenges both popular and scholarly conceptions of them as villains or heroes. In analyzing the intellectual struggles and contradictions of these five dominant personalities with regard to individual morality and collective reform, Professor Moses shows how they contributed to strategies for black improvement and puts them within the context of other currents of American thought, including Jeffersonian and Jacksonian democracy, Social Darwinism, and progressivism

    Abstract: Are there any commonalities between such phenomena as soccer hooliganism, sabotage by peasants of landlords' property, incidents of road rage, and even the events of September 11? With striking historical scope and command of the literature of many disciplines, this book, first published in 2003, seeks the common causes of these events in collective violence. In collective violence, social interaction immediately inflicts physical damage, involves at least two perpetrators of damage, and results in part from coordination among the persons who perform the damaging acts. Professor Tilly argues that collective violence is complicated, changeable, and unpredictable in some regards, yet that it also results from similar causes variously combined in different times and places. Pinpointing the causes, combinations, and settings helps to explain collective violence and its variations, and also helps to identify the best ways to mitigate violence and create democracies with a minimum of damage to persons and property

    Abstract: Lévi-Strauss is one of the major intellectual figures of the twentieth century. His theory of structuralism has been influential not only in anthropology, but across the entire field of the humanities and social sciences. This book looks at the formative period of his career, from the 1940s to the early 1960s, where he attempts to define both his own place in anthropology and the place of anthropology in the wider context of the human sciences in France. Through a close reading of key texts, Christopher Johnson provides an introduction to key aspects of Lévi-Strauss' thought, at the same time posing more general questions concerning the construction of theory and the different modes of conceptualization that inform theory. Johnson looks at the ideological and autobiographical dimensions of Lévi-Strauss' work, and demonstrates how the impact of structuralism as an intellectual movement has clearly been greater than the sum of its theoretical parts

    Abstract: Studies of social movements and of political parties have usually treated them as separate and distinct. In fact they are deeply intertwined. Social movements often shape electoral competition and party policies; they can even give rise to new parties. At the same time, political parties and campaigns shape the opportunities, personnel, and outcomes of social movements. In many countries, electoral democracy itself is the outcome of social movement actions. This book, first published in 2003, examines the interaction of social movements and party politics since the 1950s, both in the United States and around the world. In studies of the US Civil Rights movement, the New Left, the Czechoslovak dissident movements, the Mexican struggle for democracy, and other episodes, this volume shows how party politics and social movements cannot be understood without appreciating their intimate relationship

    Abstract: Abortion, divorce, and the family: how did the state make policy decisions in these areas in Argentina, Brazil, and Chile during the last third of the twentieth century? As the three countries transitioned from democratic to authoritarian forms of government (and back), they confronted challenges posed by the rise of the feminist movement, social changes, and the power of the Catholic Church. The results were often surprising: women's rights were expanded under military dictatorships, divorce was legalized in authoritarian Brazil but not in democratic Chile, and no Latin American country changed its laws on abortion. Sex and the State explores these patterns of gender-related policy reform and shows how they mattered for the peoples of Latin America and for a broader understanding of the logic behind the state's role in shaping private lives and gender relations everywhere

    Abstract: Since so few people appear knowledgeable about public affairs, one might question whether collective policy preferences revealed in opinion surveys accurately convey the distribution of voices and interests in a society. This study, the first comprehensive treatment of the relationship between knowledge, representation, and political equality in opinion surveys, suggests some surprising answers. Knowledge does matter, and the way it is distributed in society can cause collective preferences to reflect disproportionately the opinions of some groups more than others. Sometimes collective preferences seem to represent something like the will of the people, but frequently they do not. Sometimes they rigidly enforce political equality in the expression of political viewpoints, but often they do not. The primary culprit is not any inherent shortcoming in the methods of survey research. Rather, it is the limited degree of knowledge held by ordinary citizens about public affairs. Accounting for these factors can help better appreciate thepossibilities for using opinion polls to represent the people's voice

    Abstract: Overcoming Intolerance in South Africa investigates the degree to which the political culture of South Africa - the beliefs, values, and attitudes toward politics held by ordinary people - impedes or promotes the consolidation of democratic reform. One set of values is of particular concern in this study - political tolerance. The authors contend that political tolerance is a crucial element of democratic political cultures in general, but that in the South African case, tolerance is perhaps more important than any other democratic value. Since South Africa is one of the most polyglot countries in the world, the only viable strategy for survival is tolerance toward the political views of others. The overwhelming emphasis throughout this book is on finding ways to enhance the willingness of South Africans to 'put up with' their political enemies, to allow open and widespread political competition, and to coexist in their diversity

    Abstract: Auf Lazarus gehen alle Theorien des 'objektiven' Geistes zurück. Denn bei ihm wurde erstmals unter 'objektivem Geist' resp. 'objektiver Kultur' die Gesamtheit aller kulturellen Güter, Leistungen und Sachverhalte zum Thema der Philosophie. 'Kultur' meinte nun nicht mehr nur die 'höhere Bildung', sondern ebenso den ungeheuren Schatz der Kulturgüter, der gesellschaftlichen Verkehrsformen und Institutionen. Der Begriff 'Völkerpsychologie' ist zu verstehen als 'Psychologie der geistigen Verhältnisse' innerhalb und zwischen Völkern, was bereits von den Zeitgenossen mit 'Sozialpsychologie' oder 'Kulturphilosophie' gleichgesetzt bzw. übersetzt wurde. Wie und unter welchen Bedingungen gelingt resp. mißlingt die Aneignung von Kultur - eigener und fremder? In welcher Stellung steht das Individuum zur Gesamtheit resp. zu den vielfältigen Artefakten der umgebenden kulturellen Verhältnisse, d.h. zu Sprache und Wissenschaft, materieller Kultur und Institutionen, zu Formen der Geselligkeit und des Umganges? Mit diesen Fragen umriß und projektierte Lazarus eine heute wieder höchst aktuelle 'Kulturwissenschaft', die nicht mehr einseitig nur nach der Genese oder Geschichte der kulturellen Gegebenheiten und Probleme fragt, sondern vor allem den Funktionsweisen von Kultur und sozialen Formen nachspürt. Deshalb war und wurde er zum Lehrer oder Anreger von Georg Simmels Soziologie der Formen der Vergesellschaftung und seiner Theorie der Tragödie der Kultur, an die wiederum Ernst Cassirer und viele andere anknüpften, aber auch von Wilhelm Diltheys Aufbau der geschichtlichen Welt in den Geisteswissenschaften und nachfolgenden Theorien des 'objektiven Geistes' bis hin zu Hans Freyer.   Reihe Philosophische Bibliothek - Band 551.

    Abstract: Von »Ereignis« und »Ereignissen« ist überall dort die Rede, wo über das Einmalige, Neue, noch nicht Dagewesene gesprochen werden soll, über eine Revolution, einen Epochenbruch, eine Erfindung, eine unvorhergesehene Wendung. Das Wort kann als Synonym der Aporien begriffen werden, denen das Nachdenken über die Zeit heute ausgesetzt ist. Zugleich stellt die Rede vom Ereignis heute eines der mächtigsten Ideologeme der Kultur- und Medienindustrie dar. Spätestens seit dem 11. September 2001 taucht der Begriff »Ereignis« häufig in der politischen Rhetorik auf. Grund genug also, zu fragen, was es mit dem »Ereignis« als Wort, Begriff, Kategorie, Anspruch und Versprechen auf sich hat.     Abstract: During and especially after the Second World War, a group of leading scholars who had been perilously close to the war's devastation joined others fortunate enough to have been protected by distance in an effort to redefine and reinvigorate Western liberal ideals for a radically new age. Treating evil as an analytical category, they sought to discover the sources of twentieth-century horror and the potentialities of the modern state in the wake of western desolation. In the process, they devised strikingly new ways to understand politics, sociology and history that reverberate still. In this major intellectual history, Ira Katznelson examines the works of Hannah Arendt, Robert Dahl, Richard Hofstadter, Harold Lasswell, Charles Lindblom, Karl Polanyi, and David Truman, detailing their engagement with the larger project of reclaiming the West's moral bearing. In light of their epoch's calamities these intellectuals insisted that the tradition of Enlightenment thought required a new realism, a good deal of renovation, and much recommitment. This array of historians, political philosophers, and social scientists understood that a simple reassertion of liberal modernism had been made radically insufficient by the enormities and moral catastrophes of war, totalitarianism, and holocaust. Confronting their period's dashed hopes for reason and knowledge, they asked not just whether the Enlightenment should define modernity, but which Enlightenment we should wish to have. Decades later, in the midst of a new type of war and reanimated discussions of the concept of evil, we share no small stake in assessing their successes and limitations.

    Abstract: Why is English national identity so enigmatic and so elusive? Why, unlike the Scots, Welsh, Irish and most of continental Europe, do the English find it so difficult to say who they are? The Making of English National Identity, first published in 2003, is a fascinating exploration of Englishness and what it means to be English. Drawing on historical, sociological and literary theory, Krishan Kumar examines the rise of English nationalism and issues of race and ethnicity from earliest times to the present day. He argues that the long history of the English as an imperial people has, as with other imperial people like the Russians and the Austrians, developed a sense of missionary nationalism which in the interests of unity and empire has necessitated the repression of ordinary expressions of nationalism. Professor Kumar's lively and provocative approach challenges readers to reconsider their pre-conceptions about national identity and who the English really are.

    Abstract: This 2001 book is an attempt by a social scientist to explain the predicament of Gypsies (or Roma), Eastern Europe's largest ethnic minority, and their relationship to the region's states and societies. Barany examines the Gypsies' socioeconomic and political marginality and policies toward them through seven centuries and in seven East European states. He illuminates the reasons why the Roma have consistently occupied the bottom of social, economic, and political hierarchies regardless of historical period or geographic location. Barany argues that the current nostalgia of many Gypsies for the socialist period is easy to understand, given the disastrous effect of the post-communist socioeconomic transformation on the Roma's conditions over the last decade. He explains the impact of Gypsy political mobilization, and the activities of international organizations and NGOs, on government policies. This pioneering multidisciplinary work will engage political scientists, sociologists and historians, as well as students of ethnic and racial studies

    Abstract: Begegnungen mit dem Fremden sind uns vertraut, auch wenn wir den Anderen dabei häufig als unvertraut wahrnehmen. Doch es sind weniger die fremden, als vielmehr die eigenen Wirklichkeitsvorstellungen und Umgangspraktiken, die den »Einen« zum »Anderen« machen. Die Autorin analysiert diese Praktiken der Fremdsetzung, die sich von der alltäglichen Etikettierung und Stigmatisierung bis hin zu wissenschaftlichen Praktiken des »Othering« erstrecken: Rekonstruiert werden sowohl Simmels »Händler«, Parks »Mulatte«, Schütz' »Emigrant«, Meads »signifikanter/verallgemeinerter Andere« als auch ethnografische Praktiken der »Ver-Anderung« des Fremden. Dabei wird der Blick immer wieder von den vertrauten Bildern des Fremden hin zu ihren subtilen Herstellungsprozessen und Resonanzen gelenkt, was es möglich macht, von den Konstruktionen des Fremden auf die Konstruktionen des Eigenen zurückzuschließen.
