Abstract: Mijelodisplastični sindrom (MDS) je skupina heterogenih klonskih hematoloških poremećaja hematopoetskih matičnih stanica, praćenih neučinkovitom hematopoezom jedne ili više staničnih linija uz pojavu posljedičnih citopenija s povišenim rizikom od progresije u akutnu mijeloičnu leukemiju. U svakodnevnoj kliničkoj praksi dijagnoza MDS čini se invazivnom citomorfološkom analizom stanica periferne krvi i koštane srži, određivanjem postotka blasta, tipa i stupnja displazije, prisutnosti prstenastih sideroblasta i citogenetičkoj analizi stanica koštane srži. Mikroglasničke ribonukleinske kiseline (miRNA) kratke su, nekodirajuće molekule duljine 18 do 25 nukleotida, koje imaju važnu ulogu u regulaciji razvoja i metabolizma stanica, njihovoj diferencijaciji i proliferaciji, regulaciji staničnog ciklusa i stanične smrti. Tumorske stanice oslobađaju miRNA u cirkulaciju (plazmu, serum) gdje ostaju relativno stabilni. ; Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a group of heterogeneous clonal hematologic disorders of hematopoietic stem cells, followed by ineffective hematopoiesis of one or more cell lines with the onset of consequent cytopenia with an increased risk of progression to acute myeloid leukemia. According to the World Health Organization classification, the diagnosis of MDS is based on morphological, clinical, cytogenetic, immunophenotypic and biological criteria. In everyday clinical practice, the diagnosis of MDS is based on invasive cytomorphological analysis of peripheral blood and bone marrow cells, determination of blast percent, type and degree of dysplasia, presence of ring sideroblasts, and cytogenetic analysis of bone marrow cells. Micro Messenger Ribonucleic Acids (miRNAs) are short, non-coding molecules of 18 to 25 nucleotides in length that play an important role in regulating cell development and metabolism, their differentiation and proliferation, regulation of the cell cycle and cell death. Tumor cells release miRNAs into the circulation (plasma, serum) where they remain relatively stable. Although their discovery allowed linking of disease and miRNA gene expression, a precondition for their clinical application was the determination of gene expression by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction with satisfactory efficacy and specificity. In the literature, gene expression of miRNAs has been linked to the diagnosis, classification and progression of various diseases. Many studies have been conducted so far about the molecular mechanisms and epigenetic pathways in MDS and their prognostic and therapeutic significance, but few studies have analyzed the importance of miRNAs in MDS. The aim of this study was to examine the level of change of gene expression of specific mRNAs (miR-125a, miR-99b, miR-126, miR-125b, miR-let-7a) in plasma of healthy volunteers and subjects diagnosed with MDS. Gene expression of these specific mRNAs was determined in plasma samples from healthy volunteers (18) and subjects with MDS (41). This paper describes for the first time the expression of a selected miRNA cluster (125a, 125b, 99b, let-7a) in the plasma of untreated MDS patients. A significant difference was found between the study group and healthy control in miR-99b level, where at normalized values relative to miR-126, an increased level in subjects compared to control was observed 4,521 times (P = 0.004). Diagnostic and prognostic significance of miR-125a was observed and correlated negatively with erythrocyte count and hemoglobin level in the diagnosis of MDS.The results of the study suggest that gene expression of miRNA (125a, 125b, 99b, let7a) could be regulated by the same mechanism and may be clinically relevant in subjects with MDS.

Zaključak: Ovaj rad pruža uvid u zdravstveno prosvjećivanje i zdravstvenu informiranost naroda u prvoj polovini 20. stoljeća. Opisuje higijenske standarde i obrađuje najčešće primjenjivane tvari narodne medicine s naglaskom na vanjsku primjenu. ; According to the World Health Organization (WHO) definition, traditional, folk medicine covers ways in which different cultures preserve and improve health and treat the diseases of its members. The World Health Organization's recommendation is to use all proven medical experiences and methods of different civilizations, not just the official Wester medicine, to preserve health and well being. Objectives: The aim was to collect as much information as possible about the way and means for maintaining hygiene in everyday life, and the medicinal preparations used for skin care and treatment during the first half of the 20th century in Eastern Croatia (Slavonia, Baranja and Western Srijem). The secondary goal was to determine the possible rational action of folk formulations and procedures - an attempt to rationalize the purpose of reviving them in contemporary folk medicine. Study Design: The research consisted of bibliographic and field research. Participants and methods: Bibliographic research included books and publications intended for educating the public. Field research has been carried out using qualitative ethnological methods. The results of the semi-structured interview of the selected 27 interviewees and two group discussions (one with 18 inhabitants of Ilok and the other with 4 residents of Petrijevci) are presented. Results: It is important to note that this paper is not the result of research done by an anthropologist, nor a historian, but a physician practitioner's, using some of the anthropological methods. A slight modification of the methods and results presentation was necessary because the topic of this research could not be presented in the usual biomedical way. On the other hand, the historical and anthropological elements of the research were the framework and support for obtaining specific information on medicinal remedies or products for hygiene maintenance. Conclusion: This paper provides insight into the health education and awareness of the people in the first half of the 20th century. It describes hygiene standards and the most commonly used substances in folk medine of that time, with an emphasis external application.

Abstract: Long before the Europeans reached the east, the ancient Chinese had advanced their perspectives of the west. In this groundbreaking book, Wang explores a fascinating perspective of the Other. He locates the Other in the alternating directionologies of classical and imperial China, leading the reader into a long history of Chinese geo-cosmologies and world-scapes. In his analysis, Wang also delves into the historical records of Chinese "world activities," or the journeys from being the Central Kingdom to reaching to the "outer regions," separating the construction of illusory from realistic geographies while drawing attention to their interconnected natures. Wang challenges an extensive number of critical studies of Orientalist narratives (chiefly including Edward Said's Orientalism), and reframes such studies from the directionological perspectives of an "Oriental" civilization. He challenges the assumption that the Other must be understood in the sense that has been explained in general anthropology, crucially underlining the European foundations that have shaped its traditional interpretations

Abstract: The present paper Study on cultural pattern and human migration along the Chinese Silk Road (Gansu-Qinghai stretch): taking the Salar's ethnic formation and development as an example" has a rather simple framework which unceasingly oscillates between structural analysis and historical narration. Starting from a cross-cultural perspective, it combines traditional historical insights and postmodern paradigms of conceiving history. It consists on three parts - concept definition, historical analysis and critical inquiries, fieldwork summarization - presenting a comprehensive research on the topic. Through a combination of various theoretical approaches and practical historical examples, it pays attention to the formation and development of ethnic patterns under the influence of human migrations, and describes above all the heterogeneity, variability, and diversity of Gansu-Qinghai regional culture and of its constituent ethnic cultures. It investigates, respectively, their inner structures, their historical transformations, and the forging and maintenance of specific boundaries dividing the ethnic groups involved, thus refuting by placing them under the category of "ethnic isle" or "ideal cultural type". Ethnic groups that inhabit exclusively in the Gansu-Qinghai region (most commonly known as "ganqing diqu" in Chinese) are raised here as an example. They represent the central subject matter of the paper. The entire framework of the first part is dedicated to the discussion of this idea and provides a solid support for the following observations. In this paper, the author based on population theories and studies on history of human migration, will summarize from a dynamic point of view the main patterns, characteristics, procedures in the process of migration (including uprooting, arrival, settlement, reorganization), motives, reasons and other related aspects. In doing this he regards the changes in population distribution as a complex social phenomenon. Developing closer relations with other social phenomena, migration is constrained by natural and social environments, and at the same time poses profound influences on society itself. This research can thus enhance our understanding of the structure of various social aspects, including ethnic formation, motivations and consequences of mobility, culture relevance and flexibility within social system, the connection between human mobility and maintenance of boundaries (both ethnic and cultural), possible conflicts and clashes instigated in the process of cultural regeneration, and elements influencing identity transformation. After defining the scope of migration, it places migrants in the perspective of premodern globalization and probes into the history of ethnic relations, analyzing the changes brought to Gansu-Qinghai's cultural pattern by the penetration of Mongolian army into the Hexi Corridor, which resulted in a network of four self-contained worlds (cultural regions). It also points out the strategic status of the region inside the premodern global system in relation to the rise of a new communication network. The first chapter presents the basic framework and the research methodology by exploring the human instinct of expanding space and transcending cognitive confines. In this chapter, the author first systematically summarizes both Chinese and foreign literature and their respective research findings, and then, taking cross-cultural theories and deconstructivism as guidelines, provides a theoretical framework in reflection of the concept of "boundaries". As the heart of this matter, groups' cross-boundaries behavior is described as a "migration" mechanism which comes into being as a result of human endeavors in seeking new developmental space and resources. In the meantime, boundaries are also regarded as existing in two spaces - communication and academic spaces. Therefore, two models are proposed to interpret "boundaries": 1. laying stress on the homogenizing and heterogenizing trends among the ethnic groups unique to the Gansu-Qinghai region, explored on the basis of the "interaction and communication among cultural regions of Eurasian Continent"

Abstract: "This succinct, readable introduction to Chinese migration traces the huge population movements both within China and beyond its borders over thousands of years. Distinguished historian Diana Lary explores these migrations and the key roles they have played in Chinese history. She sees migration as a broad spectrum of movement, from short-term and short-range to permanent and long-range, and as a powerful vehicle for the transfer of commodities, culture, religion, and political influence. Her book will be compelling for all readers who want to understand the context for the present internal and international migrations that have changed the face of China itself and its international relations."--Provided by publisher
