Abstract: "Using a sociological and historical approach, the authors seek to highlight and assess the ways in which the influence, training, and expertise of elites were used in service to the genocidal agenda of the National Socialist Regime. The roles played by these elites have often been overshadowed by the perception that the Holocaust was largely a crime carried out by ill-educated thugs and mobs acting on nationalistic hysteria and xenophobic prejudice. While there are examples of such violence, this book clearly illustrates that rank-and-file perpetrators were largely organized and set in motion by highly educated and influential professionals who not only participated in the persecution and victimization of targeted groups, but who were also instrumental in conceiving, organizing, justifying, persuading and legitimizing the policies and practices of persecution and extermination."-- Provided by publisher

Abstract: "The Routledge Companion to Fairy Tales provides a comprehensive guide to fairy tales across literatures and cultures. It offers an expansive overview of contemporary themes and issues throughout the intersections of the fields of fairy-tale studies, literary studies, and cultural studies. The first part considers global formations of the canon, and acts to decolonize the field of fairy-tale studies, highlighting the diverse national histories and traditions of the fairy tale worldwide. It demarcates the complex history of the field of fairy-tale studies and demonstrates how the genre is rooted in different oral stories and narratives passed down in cultures around the globe throughout time. The second section outlines important critical approaches, including recent developments shaping fairy-tale studies today such as disability studies, diversity, ecocriticism, inclusivity, and intersectionality. Part three explores how fairy tales have been articulated through a wide range of forms and combinations of textual, visual, and sound media. This section foregrounds the versatility and adaptability of the fairy tale and, more specifically, how it intersects with different art forms and genres, including literature, illustrations, performing arts, and media outlets. Section four addresses sociocultural concerns in transnational fairy-tale cultures and literatures examining the connections between fairy tales and multivocal influences in modern adaptations and postmodern reimaginings, the undoing of colonization and appropriation, feminism, politics and activisms, the canon, and controversies over authenticity. This interdisciplinary collection draws on international perspectives from folkloristics, ethnology, ethnography, cultural and social anthropology, as well as queer and gender studies. It will be an invaluable resource for students and researchers interested in fairy tales and their developments over time and across cultures"-- Provided by publisher

Abstract: "Mohan, Chindaliya and Thomas offer an ethnographic critique of modern, neoliberal India from the perspective of studying the daily lives-livelihoods of marginalised, unsecured, informal vulnerable communities residing in the urban, peri-urban spaces across the nation. With case studies ranging from groups of: pastoralists, fisher-folk, and handicraft workers of Kashmir to the weavers of Kutch, and the factory workers and artisans of the Delhi capital, this edited volume of feminist ethnographies cover previously undocumented geographical and socio-cultural contexts of vulnerable groups, put together by the Centre for New Economics Studies, O.P. Jindal Global University. The diverse range of ethnographic case studies further explore the invisibilization of the growing informal sector in India's labor market, studied through the applied concepts of Gayatri Spivak's othering, Doreen Massey's power geometries and Pierre Bourdieu's (fractured) habitus. In addition to providing visual narratives of daily lifestyle, livelihoods of identified communities, our ethnographic analysis is rooted in discussing feminist paradigms from each study's respondents. A useful read for scholars and policymakers interested in understanding intersectional applications of development studies in context of the unsecured workforce in India, with application across disciplines of social-economic anthropology of South Asia, using the methodological lens of experimental ethnography."

Abstract: "Interracial marriage was already illegal in some of the American colonies as early as the 1690s. But long before the Supreme Court declared interracial marriage constitutional in 1967, these families were far from rare. It took decades of hard work by Southern lawmakers and judges to create the illusion that they were, as Tangled Fortunes reveals in this new history of the rise and fall of the domestic color line. In Tangled Fortunes, historian Kathryn Schumaker narrates how the prohibition of interracial marriage became a priority for white supremacist lawmakers. To prevent white wealth falling into Black hands, they papered over the reality of interracial relationships, steered inheritances away from those who did not pass as white, and hardened the lines of racist exclusion. But they could neither erase the region's longer history of interracial relationships nor suppress the inheritance claims of biracial descendants dating back to the era of slavery. Tangled Fortunes sheds new light on the ways that interracial families overcame racist laws, uncovered closely kept Southern secrets, and battled to reclaim Black wealth - a fight that continues to this day."

Abstract: "From its Kingston, Jamaica, inception in 1914, women helped define and shape the Black Nationalist and Pan Africanist aims of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). Their efforts, made possible in part by UNIA co-founder Amy Ashwood Garvey, helped sustain the largest social justice organization of the twentieth century. In this deeply researched collective biography, Natanya Duncan documents the complexities of UNIA women as active participants in Black nation-building. Women from both sides of the Atlantic joined the UNIA in pursuit of both gender and racial equality, developing a three-tiered activist strategy that Duncan calls 'efficient womanhood': seek equitable partnerships with like-minded persons and organizations, work as peer and intergenerational mentors, and serve as bridge builders between the organization and resources and people in service to their immediate communities and the race at large. Through an impressive and original archive of their self-determination, Duncan presents the stories of Henrietta Vinton Davis, Maymie de Mena, and Laura Kofey as well as groups of UNIA women like the Black Cross Nurses, the Universal African Motor Corp, and the Lucky 9 Club, who circumvented the ideals of their era and created a brand of independent female leadership. The book demonstrates how UNIA women orchestrated and activated the organization from the bottom up, while influencing and informing men and each other. By focusing on how women of the UNIA created an activist framework, Duncan reveals a model of organizing that has endured into the present day"--

Abstract: "When acclaimed labor historian Julie Greene researched her book The Canal Builders, which went on to be nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 2009, she explored a cache of first-person essays written in 1963 by the Afro-Caribbean people, mainly Jamaican and Barbadian, who migrated to the Isthmus of Panama to work as diggers, track shifters, or domestic servants in the Canal Zone. Held at the Library of Congress and stored in Box 25 of the Isthmian Historical Society Collection, they constitute the best primary source in existence on Caribbean workers' experiences during the construction project. Now Greene returns to this fascinating archive, and in this book, shares what it was like to be a migrant laborer on the construction of the Panama Canal. Caribbean workers faced life-threatening illnesses, accidents, racial discrimination, and culture clashes as well as the opportunity to materially improve their lives. Greene offers new details on the strategies of the people who built the canal and examines how colonialism, xenophobia, and racism shaped the process of writing and archiving the testimonies into Box 25."

Abstract: "Award-winning historian, professor, and journalist Tao Leigh Goffe, launches an investigation of the Caribbean as the seat of corrupt Western wealth and environmental exploitation. When Christopher Columbus arrived on the Caribbean island of Guanahaní, it was remade, at least in mythology, as Eden. Since then, the Caribbean and its peoples have paid the price of relentless Western exploitation and abuses, falling prey to the planting of sugarcane and other cash crops. In Dark Laboratory, Goffe embarks on a historical journey into the influences that have made these islands-from Jamaica and Aruba to Cuba and Martinique-a target of Western capitalism and the foundation of the global economy as we know it today. Through the lens of personal and family memoir, as well as cultural and social history, Goffe seeks to radically transform how we conceive of Blackness, natural history, colonialism, and the climate crisis. Her writing considers the legacy of slavery and indentured servitude as Chinese laborers worked alongside enslaved Black people to excavate products like sugarcane and guano-in its day more valuable than gold-from these island nations. How can we combat contemporary racism and environmental degradation using the Caribbean and its dark history as guide? In autobiographical writing that shines light on both environmental upheaval and racial subjugation, Goffe offers solutions based on island ecologies, locating the origins of racism and the climate catastrophe in the colonization of the Caribbean. Her combination of personal narrative and research provides a record of the violence that has shaped these nations and a testament to our capacity for renewal. In stunning, lyrical prose, Goffe dismantles our longest-held notions about island utopias and proposes new modes of thinking about the ruin and restoration of the environment."

Abstract: "This book explores the critical linkages between indigeneity, marginality, and the state in Bangladesh. Indigeneity is progressively gaining currency in politics and thereby becoming an active force in the larger context of national activism with transnational patronage and international support. Drawing on comprehensive and solid ethnographic accounts, the book offers a broader understanding of the process of marginalisation and the emergence of new leadership among the Khumi, an indigenous group of Bangladesh. It illuminates how the Khumi have realised their position on the margin of the state within the socioeconomic, political, and ethnic history of the Chittagong Hill Tracts. It also looks at how kin-based social organisations and non-kin-based social relations become bases of power and authority as well as cooperation and reciprocity in Khumi society. Lucid and topical, the book will be of interest to scholars and researchers of indigenous studies, anthropology, social anthropology, sociology, political sciences, international relations, border studies, and South Asian studies, especially those concerned with Bangladesh."

Abstract: "This collection showcases perspectives from established and emerging scholars on the contemporary landscape of multilingualism in Southern Africa. The book explores the broader impact of colonialism and neocolonialism on language policies and practices, drawing on case studies from such countries as Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. The volume is organized thematically around four different sections, looking at issues around linguistic diversity across different sectors including contemporary debates on African languages, language education, youth languages, and language documentation. Taken together, the collection seeks to offer readers with a more nuanced understanding of fundamental issues in the development of multilingualism across different countries in Southern Africa today and encourage future research on multilingualism in Africa more broadly. The volume will be of interest to students and scholars in multilingualism, sociolinguistics, language policies, language education, and African studies."

Abstract: "The question of whether Britain is "apart from or a part of Europe" (D. Abulafia) has gained significance in recent years. This book reassesses an underexplored field of early modern transnational history: the variety of ways in which connections between Britain and German-speaking Europe shaped developments. After a comprehensive introduction, this book is divided into three parts: cross-border transfers and appropriations of knowledge; coping with alterity in intergovernmental contacts; and ideologising the cultural nation. The topics range from the exchange of religious and political ideas over court life, diplomacy, and espionage to literary and philosophical debates. Particular attention is paid to the media processes involved and to the practical value of knowledge about the "other" in different historical contexts. The picture emerging from the case studies reveals an intriguing dynamic: Mutual interest and ambiguous entanglements deepened precisely at a time when the British and German worlds diverged evermore from each other in terms of social and political structures. This fascinating volume sheds new light on Anglo-German relations and will be essential reading for students of early modern European history."

Abstract: "Although Mexican emigration to the U.S. is still relevant, it has also become a return, transit, and recipient country for thousands of refugees. Now, many of these migrants, refugees, and their families stay on Mexican soil territory, trying to integrate within Mexican society. This volume brings together leading experts in Mexico and covers the political dimension of integration for migrants in Mexico analysing integration policies, civil society efforts, and public opinion from various angles. In this context, many questions arise. Among the most relevant: What has the federal government done to assist these migrant groups, who often arrive in conditions of great vulnerability? What policies have been implemented at the sub-national level of government to adequately integrate these population groups? What actions have been implemented by other local actors, such as civil society organizations? What do Mexicans think about newcomers? Immigrant Integration in Mexico will be of interest to students and scholars across a range of disciplines including International Relations, Development Studies, Anthropology, International Studies, Sociology, and Latin American Studies

Abstract: "This edited book argues that a new perspective on immigration is needed: as Western societies age, and their populations stagnate or decline, and immigrants are increasingly required, the old view that it is a privilege for immigrants to move from less developed to more developed countries needs to be replaced by questions about how attractive host countries are to immigrants, and not just in economic, but also in social, political and cultural terms. Considering in detail the situation in Japan and Germany - Japan where there are hardly any Japanese behind cash registers in convenience stores, Germany where retirement homes would no longer function without foreign nursing staff - the book analyses the needs of host countries from a demographic standpoint, the desires of migrants in terms of education, training, and labour market participation, and policies and actions on the part of the state and civil society in rendering moving to and living in these countries worthwhile. Bringing together leading scholars, practitioners, and NGO representatives active in diverse aspects of migration, this book will be a valuable resource to students and scholars with an interest in immigration issues in Germany and Japan, and Europe and Asia more broadly

Abstract: "This volume explores how crusading rhetoric, iconography, and historiography have been purposed by far-right, nationalist, and related groups in the recent past through case studies as varied as Brenton Tarrant, who killed 51 people at a mosque and Islamic centre in New Zealand in March 2019; a modern American 'military order' that uses memes to recruit members and spread its ideology; and the bestselling video game Assassin's Creed. The Crusades and the Far-Right in the Twenty-First Century is useful for all students and scholars interested in the intersection between the history of the crusades and far-right ideology in the modern age."

Abstract: "John Samuel Harpham shows that, long before the emergence of racial ideologies, English merchants found justification for the Atlantic slave trade in Roman law. That tradition influenced key authors such as John Locke and Hugo Grotius, who in turn shaped the attitudes of traders initially hesitant to profit from human bondage."

Abstract: "Captive City explores the paths of slavery in coastal cities, arguing that captivity haunts the "hospitality" cultures of Charleston, New Orleans, Savannah, and Baltimore. It is not a history of urban slavery, but a literary reflection that argues for coastal cities as a distinct region that scrambles time, resisting the "post" in postindustrial and the "neo" in neoliberalism. Jennie Lightweis-Goff offers a cultural exploration bound by American literature, especially life-writing by the enslaved, as well as compelling reassessments of works by canonical writers such as Frederick Douglass, Harriet Jacobs, and Hector St. John de Crevecoeur."

Abstract: "This book offers approaches to the study of Byzantine dress of elites and non-elites, in sacred and secular modes, from the beginning of the Empire in the fourth century until the fifteenth century. Byzantine dress is considered from within and outside of the Empire, and examines both artefactual remains as well as emphasizing studies that elucidate Byzantine dress when few or no artifacts exist. Byzantine Dress: A Guide tackles current conceptual frameworks in the first three chapters and considers identity and sartorial signaling among Byzantines as well as foreigners in images as well as actual items of dress. A second section addresses material considerations, reflecting on construction and its effect on value. The interpretation of archaeological material is analyzed, along with reconstruction and context. Dress as part of rituals - at court, church, and in various ceremonies - is the focus of a third section. The final two chapters bring Byzantine dress into conversation with dress studies more broadly. A discursive chapter argues for a fashion system within the Byzantine Empire, which has been largely seen as pre-dating the notion of fashion. The final chapter concerns display, interpretation and conservation of fragmentary material in a museum context. This book aims toward a general audience new to the subject of Byzantine dress. Specialists in Byzantine studies and dress studies more generally will find the attention to current scholarship and archaeological interpretation invaluable for research, and the book will also appeal to an audience new to the subject of Byzantine dress

Abstract: "Without an official homeland, argues Karam Dana, the Palestinian political self by necessity assumes the form of global collective activism. The book takes a historical and multidisciplinary approach to the issue of Palestinian activism from the start of the conflict to the present day. Dana, himself a Palestinian American, draws on interviews with key Palestinian expatriate activists, historical documents, and public opinion data to examine the impact of global Palestinian exiled communities on the creation and molding of a refined Palestinian identity both in the United States and in the broader international community. The book explores the ways that Palestinian identity is strengthened by the lack of a defined home nation and how a coalition built on exile orients itself on a right of return to a distant homeland, even after many generations have strong roots in their adopted countries. Palestine is an enduring issue in global politics, and To Stand with Palestine is a remarkable and timely study that gives a unique inside look at how Palestinians view their political selves and their place in the geopolitical order."

Abstract: "The history of queer politics in the United States since 1968 is commonly narrated as either a progressive campaign for state recognition or as a subcultural rejection of prevailing gender norms. But these accounts miss the true scale of queer politics in the post-war era. By centering transnational relations, practices, and infrastructures in the history of sexual rebellion, Eros and Empire provides an alternative view of US-based struggles for sexual freedom. Alexander Stoffel analyzes three prominent US-based social movements--gay liberationism, Black lesbian feminism, and AIDS activism--to argue that they were fundamentally shaped by their transnational entanglements. Departing from popular domestic framings of these movements, Stoffel recasts the history of radical queer thought and action as a project of erotic worldmaking. This project mobilized queer affects of pleasure, desire, and eroticism in the fight for revolutionary transformation on a world scale. The transnational perceptions, activities, and consciousness of queer radicals, Stoffel argues, not only conditioned the trajectory of queer history, but also radicalized wider anti-imperialist, socialist, and abolitionist struggles past and present. In this ambitious and interdisciplinary work, Stoffel reconsiders the United States' revolutionary sexual past and creates new opportunities for the study of sexual formations in relation to questions of capital accumulation, empire, and resistance"--

Abstract: Tal Zalmanovich explores how television revolutionized the political landscape in postwar Britain and played a pivotal role in the international campaign against apartheid from 1950 to 1990. Drawing on case studies and a diverse array of sources, Zalmanovich argues that television's ability to transcend geographical and temporal boundaries proved instrumental in building a global coalition against apartheid in South Africa. Moreover, she shows how the medium became a key battleground in the broader struggle for racial equality in Britain, where debates over apartheid intersected with contemporary discussions about race, immigration, decolonization, and Cold War politics.

Abstract: This volume provides a historical context for the present escalation of hostilities between Palestinians and the State of Israel. It brings together interdisciplinary chapters written by international specialists in the field of interreligious engagement. It presents Jewish and Palestinian perspectives as well as the South African perspective regarding apartheid, international law, antisemitism, and the suppression of the Palestinian voice in Germany and the United States. It further delves into the historic and ongoing dispossession of the Palestinian experience and discuss the accusation of ethnic cleansing carried out by Israel and supported by the Western powers, particularly the United States. Abstract: ""All power to the people!" So goes the familiar refrain of 1960s racial justice politics. The message is clear: the fight against racism is a fight for greater democracy-for the rule of "the people." And yet, across American history, movements of racial backlash have also framed themselves as aiming to deliver greater democracy and redeem the rule of "the people." Examples abound, ranging from the Southern Redeemers who sought to overthrow Reconstruction to the populist backlash to the civil rights movement and the white revanchism of our own time. How is it that we find claims to greater democracy on both sides of these conflicts? What does this reveal about modern democracy, popular sovereignty, and the peculiar politics of race in America?"-- Provided by publisher
Abstract: "A bold explanation of how reactionary political movements appeal to racism to reconcile American democracy with antidemocratic practices."All power to the people!" So goes the familiar slogan of 1960s racial justice politics. The message is clear: the fight against racism is a fight for greater democracy-for the rule of "the people." And yet, across American history, movements of racial backlash have also framed themselves as aiming to deliver greater democracy and redeem the rule of "the people." Examples abound, ranging from the Southern Redeemers who overthrew Reconstruction, to the "populist" backlash to the civil rights movement, and the white revanchism of our own time.
Abstract: How is it that we find claims to greater democracy on both sides of these struggles? What does this reveal about modern democracy, popular sovereignty, and the peculiar politics of race in America? The Counterrevolutionary Shadow: Race, Democracy, and the Making of the American People provides a novel account of the relationship between race and democratic politics in the United States. Across five chapters, Michael Gorup turns to the life and work of key figures in the history of American political thought-including Thomas Jefferson, Hosea Easton, David Walker, Ida B. Wells, W. E. B. Du Bois, and Huey P. Newton-to argue that racial politics in the United States has always been a politics of peoplehood. Racism is what Gorup calls a politics of "popular enclosure": it limits the scope of democratic power by circumscribing who is said to belong to "the people." In so doing, it contains democratization from within.
Description / Table of Contents: Introduction : the counterrevolutionary shadow -- Democratic despotism and the politics of popular enclosure -- Thomas Jefferson and the counterrevolution of race -- Abolition as people-making -- The strange fruit of the Tree of Liberty -- Democracy and decolonization in America -- Epilogue : racial despotism in the 21st century

Abstract: "An eye-opening examination of how power-not technology-will define life with AI. AI is inescapable, from its mundane uses online to its increasingly consequential decision-making in courtrooms, employment interviews, and wars. The ubiquity of AI is so great that it's even produced public resignation-a sense that the technology is our shared fate. As economist Maximilian Kasy shows in The Means of Prediction, artificial intelligence, far from being an unstoppable force, is irrevocably shaped by human decisions-choices made to date by the ownership class steering its development and deployment. Kasy shows that the technology of AI is not complex. It is insidious, however, in its capacity to steer results to its owners' wants and ends. Kasy clearly and accessibly explains the fundamental principles on which AI works, and in doing so, reveals that the real conflict isn't between humans and machines, but between those who control the machines and the rest of us.
Abstract: The Means of Prediction offers a powerful vision of the future of AI: a future not shaped by technology, but by the technology's owners. Amid a deluge of debates about technical details, new possibilities, and social problems, Kasy cuts to the core issue: who controls AI's objectives, and how is this control maintained? The answer lies in what he calls "the means of prediction," or the essential resources required for building AI systems: data, computing power, expertise, and energy. As Kasy shows, in a world already defined by inequality, one of humanity's most consequential technologies in centuries has been and will be steered by those already in power. Against those stakes, Kasy offers an elegant framework both for understanding AI's capabilities and for designing its public control. He makes a compelling case for democratic control over AI objectives as the answer to mounting concerns about AI's risks and harms.
Abstract: The Means of Prediction is a revelation, both an expert undressing of a technology that has masqueraded as more complicated and a compelling call for public oversight of this transformative technology

Abstract: "The Ruin Dwellers takes us into the urban spaces of youth revolts during the 1970s and 1980s in West Germany and elsewhere in western and central Europe. These activists have been seen as striving for a utopian future, but as historian Jake Smith shows, this view is inaccurate. Rather, the author argues, they were committed to a much more unique sensibility: one that sought to subvert progressive temporal frameworks and, instead, dwell in the ruins of the past. Examining a rich corpus of radical texts and practices, Smith shows that squatters and their leftist allies in this period engaged in countercultural aesthetic experiments with modes of autonomous living. Smith brings to life the real and imagined landscapes conjured in abandoned, run-down buildings and in reinvented city spaces; through the off-modern punk style in art, dress, music, graffiti, and film; and in philosophical, poetic, and political writing. In so doing, he offers an eye-opening look at anarchic world-making practices that found new ways of imagining an emancipated future through inhabiting the fractured past."

Abstract: "Anti-minority rhetoric in American politics has grown more overt. What were once fringe comments on Stormfront have now become typical campaign appeals from many mainstream politicians. This is the social and political terrain we now live in. If there was ever a doubt, this is a poignant reminder that the boundaries of what is "acceptable" and "unacceptable" to say and do are fluid and socially enforced. In Parties and Prejudice, Maneesh Arora offers a broad framework for understanding the current political landscape. Arora argues that the interaction between social norms and party politics determines whether overt prejudice is accepted by the public and what the political consequence of prejudicial speech will be. Moreover, identifiable historical and contemporary factors have led anti-minority messages against certain groups to be more socially acceptable, and more electorally advantageous, than others. Using a case study approach that incorporates dozens of experiments, survey data, T.V. news coverage, and real-world examples, Parties and Prejudice shows that norms of acceptable political rhetoric have developed in distinct ways for Black, Muslim, and LGBTQ Americans. Norms have also developed in more inegalitarian ways within the Republican Party than within the Democratic Party. Arora argues that the relationship between norms, party politics, and expressions of prejudice is essential to understanding Donald Trump's rise to power, the modern conservative agenda (including opposition to critical race theory and transgender rights), and the current and future threats to the development of a multiracial democracy."

Abstract: "Throughout the Twentieth Century many women in Ireland and Britain endured shame and institutionalisation for becoming pregnant outside of marriage. In this welcome study, Lorraine Grimes examines the journeys made by hundreds of pregnant Irish women to Britain as they fled to escape their local communities. Their experiences in Britain, however, were not free of stigma and Grimes's book analyses the nuances of the institutional networks both in Britain and Ireland which these women utilised. Single Mothers in Twentieth Century Ireland and Britain focuses on the experiences of women from 1926-1973 in cities with high Irish emigrant populations, including London, Liverpool, Birmingham and Glasgow. Unlike official narratives such as Ireland's Commission of Investigation into the Mother and Baby Homes, this book prioritises the experiences of the survivors and ensure that women's experiences are central to the narrative."
Abstract: "It also incorporates original interviews with children born in institutions and for the first time, interviews with religious and medical staff are also included in the historiography. Using archival research and oral history, Grimes reveals the methods British and Irish institutions developed, from forced adoption to repatriation and the impacts of this on the women and children's lives. Grimes makes a significant contribution to the historiography surrounding the movement of women and children across international borders through repatriation, adoption and between institutions both sides of the Irish Sea. From extensive archival research, this book reveals cases of Irish single mothers seeking assistance in Britain as well as cases of rape, incest and domestic violence within the institutional records. In addition, archival cases expose prejudice towards women from other colonial countries in institutions in Britain, particularly from the 1960s."
Abstract: "A first for the field, Single Mothers includes a chapter on the experiences of single fathers. Sensitive to the underlying issues of class and gender politics, the book also shows that women often enacted a large degree of agency to improve their situation. If you are interested in women's political and social history, and the history of the institutional relationships of Britain and Ireland, this book is essential reading."

Abstract: This book focuses on anthropology's ambition for comprehensiveness and its interdisciplinary nature. It consists of concise essays, each around 2,500 words, in which contributors examine how concepts traditionally linked to philosophy or other disciplines are interpreted and applied within anthropology. Each contributor selects a personally inspiring concept and illustrates its relevance to anthropology, showcasing how it takes on new meaning within an anthropological framework. These essays vary in style and content, allowing contributors to discuss the history of the concept’s usage, provide an ethnographic illustration of the concept, or offer an analytical, comparative or theoretical exposition of the concept as deployed anthropologically. A common theme across all entries is the exploration of anthropological disciplinarity— or 'anti-disciplinarity' - highlighting its intellectual flexibility and genre-blurring practices, in an effort to approach that expansiveness necessary to do justice to the complexity of human existence. Nigel Rapport is Emeritus Professor of Anthropological and Philosophical Studies at the University of St Andrews, UK.

Abstract: "In recent years, there has been an unprecedented shift in the attitudes of young individuals toward the key economic issues they encounter as they embark on their adult lives. Sociologists have identified two distinct generations, namely Generation Y and Generation Z, which exhibit behaviours contrary to those of their parents and older generations. The reasons behind these shifts are shared across European countries, where these generations have experienced lives characterized by peace, cultural diversity, globalization, economic stability, relative economic and social well-being, as well as parental care and education. Addressing a gap in the economic literature, this book uniquely bridges the current understanding of youth with empirical evidence specific to Central and Eastern European Countries, represented by Poland and Czechia. Germany was taken as an example of a Western European Country. The novelty lies in identifying the contemporary trends and determinants shaping the decision-making process of young adults regarding the labour market, savings and investments, job satisfaction, retirement, and sustainable consumption. The book draws on a theoretical foundation from both economic and sociological perspectives. The book comprises ten interconnected chapters, each contributing to the central theme of youth intentions and attitudes toward economic/financial issues. The summary is presented from the perspective of contemporary megatrends. The target audience includes students and researchers in fields related to contemporary economic challenges-such as economics, psychology, and sociology. Given the challenges faced by young adults from post-socialist states, implementing the policy recommendations in the book may contribute to reducing the gap between them and their counterparts in Western European countries. Institutions involved in social policy, including both non-governmental organizations and public entities, will also find the policy implications to be of interest"-- Provided by publisher

Abstract: "This book provides a clear and comprehensive introduction to the past, present, and future direction of death rituals and deathcare systems within Japan. As Japan heads toward a precarious future shaped by its super-ageing society, secularisation, and economic stagnation, the socioreligious structures that once organised death and funeral practice are becoming increasingly unstable. In their place, new social structures, technologies, and rituals for the farewell of the dead, handling of cremains, and commemoration of the ancestors have begun to emerge. The work is informed by the authors’ extensive research within Japan’s funeral, cemetery, and memorialisation sectors and the latest Japanese data sources and academic publications, many of which are not currently available in English. Providing readily accessible and contextualising information, this book will be an essential reference for graduate students and academics, as well as international policymakers and deathcare practitioners."

Abstract: "For much of the last century, three narratives framed American history. The plantation narrative, with its Gone-with-the-Wind view of slavery and Reconstruction, bolstered racial apartheid. The frontier narrative worshipped individualism over collective responsibility and ignored the decimation of indigenous cultures. The industrial narrative, redefined by Ralph Brauer in this sweeping history of late-nineteenth-century labor and farmer activism, traditionally celebrated laissez-faire capitalism and the achievements of wealthy industrialists. The Age of Discontent offers an alternative perspective, asserting that the largest and most important expression of mass democracy in American history laid the foundations for economic growth and prosperity. Main Street, not Wall Street, was responsible for the American Century. Grassroots activists and reformers from the working and farming classes take center stage in this fascinating success story of government programs and legislation."

Abstract: "Claiming Citizenship looks at Indian Americans, currently the second-largest group of immigrants in the United States, and a group that has seen significant representation in the three most recent presidential administrations. Prema Kurien asks how Indian Americans have become a rising political force given that they have not followed the traditional, recommended model of political influence. She examines the dialectical process through which immigrants conform to the structures and cultures of the society to which they have immigrated, but also work to transform their adopted homelands to accommodate their unique needs."--

Abstract: "Looking at the Finnish-Russian borderland as a transnational space and claiming that there is a need to understand the long-term effects of migration--a continuing process spanning several generations--The Hidden Minority takes a multi-temporal perspective on mobility and belonging. The focus of this ethnographic study is the Russian minority in Finland, which is socially, economically, politically and culturally heterogeneous. The Russian minority in Finland is imbued with 'being hidden' or 'hiding oneself'. The book explores informants' reflections, together with the author, on the mental and physical crossing of national borders. Perceptions of belonging and/or Otherness and lived experience reveal a complex relationship of embodied memory, history, time and a multi-national social space."

Abstract: "This edited volume proposes to revisit the development of recreational and professional sporting activities in the French capital between 1854 and 2024. It comprises fifteen chapters surveying the rich and multifaceted history of athletic practices in Paris, and constitutes the first comprehensive piece of scholarship exclusively dedicated to the relationship between sport, history, and culture in the City of Light. This collection articulates and emphasizes the sustained presence and impact of sports in Parisian lives for over a century and a half, at the same time as it encourages readers to think about sports as a form of cultural expression able to alter national, regional, and individual identity, in other words, as a form of entertainment able to shift our perception of leisure and spectatorship, an activity able to transform urban spaces and social norms. To this end, Sport in Paris proposes complementary perspectives, by not only addressing multiple sporting disciplines (tennis, football, boxing, etc.) but also stressing interdisciplinary approaches (history of the press, urbanism, health studies, literary geography, etc.)"--

Abstract: "With this book, Houri Berberian and Talinn Grigor offer the first history of Armenian women in modern Iran. Foregrounding the work of Armenian women's organizations, the authors trace minoritarian politics and the shifting relationships among doubly minoritized Armenian female subjects, Iran's central nodes of power, and the Irano-Armenian patriarchal institutions of church and political parties. Engaging broader considerations around modernization, nationalism, and feminism, this book makes a conceptually rich contribution to how we think about the history of women and minoritized peoples. Berberian and Grigor read archival, textual, visual, and oral history sources together and against one another to challenge conventional notions of "the archive" and transform silences and absences into audible and visual presences. Understanding minoritarian politics as formulated by women through their various forms of public and intellectual activisms, this book provides a groundbreaking intervention in Iran's history of modernization, Armenian diasporic history, and Iranian and Armenian feminist historiography."

Abstract: "Social Change: Movements, Politics, and Technology is a text-reader that examines social change processes in the United States in global and historical context. It is distinctive among social change texts because it examines competing strategies of social change, connecting experiences of social movement leaders and participants with larger political-economic processes. Each chapter spotlights a field of historical conflict that generated epoch-making social changes, and the actors who sought and resisted change: settlers, plantation owners, factory and mine owners, bankers and hedge fund managers, indigenous people, abolitionists, people of color, the employed and unemployed, homeless people, youth, welfare mothers, LGBTQIA activists, feminists, and people with disabilities, intellectuals, philanthropists, religious leaders, etc. At the end of each chapter, the author will recommend two primary source documents for further study that provide narrative accounts of social movements that served as significant change agents."

Abstract: "Manifesting Violence: White Terrorism, Digital Culture, and the Rhetoric of Replacement by Casey Ryan Kelly and William J. Sipe explores the fertile playground of the digital world for white supremist groups to spread their message of a white genocide. Through their investigation and analysis of white supremacist terrorists' manifestos and online screeds, Kelly and Sipe examine the rhetorical tools of white supremist to convert new virtual communities through fears, such as the "great replacement" myth, to spark white supremist violence. Through the manifestos' rhetoric of white nationalism, and calling for support of the white race, family, and children, curious internet surfers are radicalized to believe that the white race is under attack and needs to be defended. Kelly and Sipe explain that the longer someone is immersed in this digital culture of racism, be it through manifestos, humorous racial jokes, or digital conversations, these rhetorical devises transform what was one entertainment into empowered action. Manifesting Violence expands what it means to be part of these movements to show that white supremacy is no longer confined to organized white racist groups but has moved into the digital sphere in new forms. Internet culture has broadened racist rhetoric and literature from long written manifestos to also include entertaining and sharable jokes, and online racist screeds. Kelly and Sipes' survey of this growing digital ecosystem highlights the danger of how online communication allows us to see how accessible these platforms are, and how easily they foster the slip from hateful speech to violent action"

Abstract: "Black British Music in America 1967-2000: Atlantic Crossover historically examines musical and cultural relationships through popular music recordings, exploring the transatlantic journeys via academic, critical and commercial reception of the music. It addresses an overlooked area of Black popular music, investigating the fluctuating fortunes of artists and the contradictions of exporting such recordings to America. Examining a complex history spanning the last four decades of the twentieth century, the author reveals the chronologies, and the recording industry circumstances shaping the presence of Black British music in America. Readers will discover the conditions under which key recordings were made and released, through detailed analysis and new interviews with participating producers and artists. Including exploration of chart histories, this book also dissects the content of the recordings, uncovering the elements that made many of them successful. Black British Music in America 1967-2000 will interest all those who study popular music, cultural studies, and music production, as well as popular music listeners"--

Abstract: "The first comprehensive overview of Werner Sollors' ground-breaking work on culture and ethnicity.Born in Silesia, raised in the Frankfurt area and educated in Berlin, Werner Sollors has spent most of his career at Harvard University in the United States and is regarded, in Cornel West’s words, ‘as one of the finest scholars that we have on race and cultural hybridity in both this country and the world’. This Reader offers the first comprehensive overview of the work of a central figure in the field of ethnic studies. The pieces collected here range from Puritan New England to contemporary Germany, from ‘Exodus’ to Mary Antin’s Promised Land, from the ‘Curse of Ham’ to Teju Cole. They attest to Sollors’ deep historical sensibilities, his attention to textual detail and his awareness of the costs and opportunities of both cosmopolitan ideals and particularist commitments, whilst addressing a central question: why does modernisation take the form of ethnicisation in many places around the globe? The collected essays are complemented by a detailed introduction by Daniel G. Williams which foregrounds some of the key emphases and tensions in Sollors’ writings."

Abstract: "A surprising and beautiful meditation on the color blue - and its fascinating role in Black history and culture - from National Book Award winner Imani Perry. Throughout history, the concept of Blackness has been remarkably intertwined with another color: blue. In daily life, it is evoked in countless ways. Blue skies and blue water offer hope for that which lies beyond the current conditions. But blue is also the color of deep melancholy and heartache, echoing Louis Armstrong's question, "What did I do to be so Black and blue?" In this book, celebrated author Imani Perry uses the world's favorite color as a springboard for a riveting emotional, cultural, and spiritual journey--an examination of race and Blackness that transcends politics or ideology."-- Provided by publisher
