Kurzfassung: "This volume explores how crusading rhetoric, iconography, and historiography have been purposed by far-right, nationalist, and related groups in the recent past through case studies as varied as Brenton Tarrant, who killed 51 people at a mosque and Islamic centre in New Zealand in March 2019; a modern American 'military order' that uses memes to recruit members and spread its ideology; and the bestselling video game Assassin's Creed. The Crusades and the Far-Right in the Twenty-First Century is useful for all students and scholars interested in the intersection between the history of the crusades and far-right ideology in the modern age."

Kurzfassung: "The question of whether Britain is "apart from or a part of Europe" (D. Abulafia) has gained significance in recent years. This book reassesses an underexplored field of early modern transnational history: the variety of ways in which connections between Britain and German-speaking Europe shaped developments. After a comprehensive introduction, this book is divided into three parts: cross-border transfers and appropriations of knowledge; coping with alterity in intergovernmental contacts; and ideologising the cultural nation. The topics range from the exchange of religious and political ideas over court life, diplomacy, and espionage to literary and philosophical debates. Particular attention is paid to the media processes involved and to the practical value of knowledge about the "other" in different historical contexts. The picture emerging from the case studies reveals an intriguing dynamic: Mutual interest and ambiguous entanglements deepened precisely at a time when the British and German worlds diverged evermore from each other in terms of social and political structures. This fascinating volume sheds new light on Anglo-German relations and will be essential reading for students of early modern European history."

Kurzfassung: "Looking at the Finnish-Russian borderland as a transnational space and claiming that there is a need to understand the long-term effects of migration--a continuing process spanning several generations--The Hidden Minority takes a multi-temporal perspective on mobility and belonging. The focus of this ethnographic study is the Russian minority in Finland, which is socially, economically, politically and culturally heterogeneous. The Russian minority in Finland is imbued with 'being hidden' or 'hiding oneself'. The book explores informants' reflections, together with the author, on the mental and physical crossing of national borders. Perceptions of belonging and/or Otherness and lived experience reveal a complex relationship of embodied memory, history, time and a multi-national social space"--

Kurzfassung: "In this incisive new book, Patrice D. Douglass interrogates the relationship between sexual violence and modern racial slavery and finds it not only inseverable but also fundamental to the structural predicaments facing Blackness in the present. Douglass contends that the sexual violability of slaves is often misappropriated by frameworks on sexual violence that privilege its occurrences as a question of ethics, sexual agency, and feminine orders of gendering. Rather, this book foregrounds Blackness as engendered by sexual violence, which forcefully (re)produces Blackness, corporeally and conceptually, as a condition that lacks the capacity to ontologically distinguish its suffering from what it means to be human. By employing and critically revising Black feminist theory and Afro-pessimism, Douglass reveals that engaging primarily with the sexualization of the slave forces theories of sexual violence to interrogate why this violence - one of the most prevalent under slavery - continues to lack a grammar of fundamental redress. There are no reparations struggles for the generational transfer of sexual violation and the inability of present frameworks to rectify the sexual stains of slavery lies precisely in the fact that what made this history possible continues to haunt arrangements of life today. Engendering Blackness urgently articulates the way our present understandings of Blackness and humanness are bound by this vexed sexual history"--

Kurzfassung: "Although Mexican emigration to the U.S. is still relevant, it has also become a return, transit, and recipient country for thousands of refugees. Now, many of these migrants, refugees, and their families stay on Mexican soil territory, trying to integrate within Mexican society. This volume brings together leading experts in Mexico and covers the political dimension of integration for migrants in Mexico analysing integration policies, civil society efforts, and public opinion from various angles. In this context, many questions arise. Among the most relevant: What has the federal government done to assist these migrant groups, who often arrive in conditions of great vulnerability? What policies have been implemented at the sub-national level of government to adequately integrate these population groups? What actions have been implemented by other local actors, such as civil society organizations? What do Mexicans think about newcomers? Immigrant Integration in Mexico will be of interest to students and scholars across a range of disciplines including International Relations, Development Studies, Anthropology, International Studies, Sociology, and Latin American Studies

Kurzfassung: "From Munchausen by Tiktok to wellness apps to online communities to AI, the DISCO Network explores the possibilities that technoskepticism can create. This is a book about possibility and refusal in relation to new technologies. Though refusal is an especially powerful mode--particularly for those who have historically not been given the option to say no--people of color and disabled people have long navigated the space between saying yes and saying no to the newest technologies. Technoskepticism relates some of these stories to reveal the possibilities skepticism can create. The case for technoskepticism unfolds across three sections: the first focused on disability, the creative use of wellness apps, and the desire for diagnosis; the second on digital nostalgia and home for Black and Asian users who produced communities online before home pages gave way to profiles; and the third focused on the violence inherent in A.I.-generated Black bodies and the possibilities for Black style in the age of A.I. Acknowledging how the urge to refuse new technologies emerges from specific racialized histories, the authors also emphasize how care can look like an exuberant embrace of the new."

Kurzfassung: "This book explores the multifaceted experiences of British Turks, particularly focusing on how they navigate and negotiate Islamophobia in contemporary British society. It delves into the complexities of identity, ethnicity, and religion, shedding light on the unique ways in which British Turks respond to and reshape the discourses surrounding Islamophobia. By examining the intersection of Turkish secularism, national identity, and global socio-political dynamics, this book offers a nuanced understanding of how Islamophobia is both experienced and deflected within this community. Through a combination of in-depth interviews, ethnographic insights, and analysis of social discourses, the book highlights how British Turks engage in practices of passing and identity negotiation. It uncovers how these strategies are informed by broader themes such as Brexit, cosmopolitanism, and the legacy of Turkey's relationship with Europe. This study challenges monolithic interpretations of Islamophobia, presenting a more diverse and intricate portrayal of its impact on different Muslim communities. This book is an essential resource for scholars and students of Sociology, Criminology, Cultural Studies, and Religious Studies, as well as policymakers and practitioners working in multicultural and multi-ethnic contexts. It will be of particular interest to those studying the intersections of race, religion, and identity in the Middle East and Contemporary Europe."

Kurzfassung: "Mohan, Chindaliya and Thomas offer an ethnographic critique of modern, neoliberal India from the perspective of studying the daily lives-livelihoods of marginalised, unsecured, informal vulnerable communities residing in the urban, peri-urban spaces across the nation. With case studies ranging from groups of: pastoralists, fisher-folk, and handicraft workers of Kashmir to the weavers of Kutch, and the factory workers and artisans of the Delhi capital, this edited volume of feminist ethnographies cover previously undocumented geographical and socio-cultural contexts of vulnerable groups, put together by the Centre for New Economics Studies, O.P. Jindal Global University. The diverse range of ethnographic case studies further explore the invisibilization of the growing informal sector in India's labor market, studied through the applied concepts of Gayatri Spivak's othering, Doreen Massey's power geometries and Pierre Bourdieu's (fractured) habitus. In addition to providing visual narratives of daily lifestyle, livelihoods of identified communities, our ethnographic analysis is rooted in discussing feminist paradigms from each study's respondents. A useful read for scholars and policymakers interested in understanding intersectional applications of development studies in context of the unsecured workforce in India, with application across disciplines of social-economic anthropology of South Asia, using the methodological lens of experimental ethnography"--

Kurzfassung: "From its Kingston, Jamaica, inception in 1914, women helped define and shape the Black Nationalist and Pan Africanist aims of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). Their efforts, made possible in part by UNIA co-founder Amy Ashwood Garvey, helped sustain the largest social justice organization of the twentieth century. In this deeply researched collective biography, Natanya Duncan documents the complexities of UNIA women as active participants in Black nation-building. Women from both sides of the Atlantic joined the UNIA in pursuit of both gender and racial equality, developing a three-tiered activist strategy that Duncan calls 'efficient womanhood': seek equitable partnerships with like-minded persons and organizations, work as peer and intergenerational mentors, and serve as bridge builders between the organization and resources and people in service to their immediate communities and the race at large. Through an impressive and original archive of their self-determination, Duncan presents the stories of Henrietta Vinton Davis, Maymie de Mena, and Laura Kofey as well as groups of UNIA women like the Black Cross Nurses, the Universal African Motor Corp, and the Lucky 9 Club, who circumvented the ideals of their era and created a brand of independent female leadership. The book demonstrates how UNIA women orchestrated and activated the organization from the bottom up, while influencing and informing men and each other. By focusing on how women of the UNIA created an activist framework, Duncan reveals a model of organizing that has endured into the present day"--

Kurzfassung: "Interracial marriage was already illegal in some of the American colonies as early as the 1690s. But long before the Supreme Court declared interracial marriage constitutional in 1967, these families were far from rare. It took decades of hard work by Southern lawmakers and judges to create the illusion that they were, as Tangled Fortunes reveals in this new history of the rise and fall of the domestic color line. In Tangled Fortunes, historian Kathryn Schumaker narrates how the prohibition of interracial marriage became a priority for white supremacist lawmakers. To prevent white wealth falling into Black hands, they papered over the reality of interracial relationships, steered inheritances away from those who did not pass as white, and hardened the lines of racist exclusion. But they could neither erase the region's longer history of interracial relationships nor suppress the inheritance claims of biracial descendants dating back to the era of slavery. Tangled Fortunes sheds new light on the ways that interracial families overcame racist laws, uncovered closely kept Southern secrets, and battled to reclaim Black wealth - a fight that continues to this day."

Kurzfassung: "How can the judgment calls we make in everyday life create or help eradicate social inequality? Is It Racist? Is It Sexist? Two questions that seem simple on their face, but which invite a host of tangled responses. In this book, Jessi Streib and Betsy Leondar-Wright offer a new way of understanding how inequalities persist by focusing on the individual judgment calls that lead us to decide what's racist, what's sexist, and what's not. Racism and sexism often seem like optical illusions - with some people sure they see them and others sure they're not there - but the lines that most consistently divide our decisions might surprise you. Indeed, white people's views of what's racist and sexist are increasingly up for grabs. As the largest racial group in the country and the group that occupies the most and the highest positions of power, what they decide is racist and sexist helps determine the contours of inequality. By asking white people - Southerners and Northerners, Republicans and Democrats, working-class and professional-middle-class, men and women - to decide whether specific interactions and institutions are racist, sexist, or not, Streib and Leondar-Wright take us on a journey through the decision-making processes of white people in America. By presenting them with a variety of scenarios, the authors are able to distinguish the responses as being characteristic of different patterns of reasoning. They produce a framework for understanding these patterns that invites us all to engage with each other in a new way, even on topics that might divide us. Is It Racist? Is It Sexist? will leave you questioning how you decide whether a joke, a hiring decision, or a policy change is or isn't racist or sexist, and will give you new tools for making more accurate and productive judgment calls"--

Kurzfassung: "This book explores the critical linkages between indigeneity, marginality, and the state in Bangladesh. Indigeneity is progressively gaining currency in politics and thereby becoming an active force in the larger context of national activism with transnational patronage and international support. Drawing on comprehensive and solid ethnographic accounts, the book offers a broader understanding of the process of marginalisation and the emergence of new leadership among the Khumi, an indigenous group of Bangladesh. It illuminates how the Khumi have realised their position on the margin of the state within the socioeconomic, political, and ethnic history of the Chittagong Hill Tracts. It also looks at how kin-based social organisations and non-kin-based social relations become bases of power and authority as well as cooperation and reciprocity in Khumi society. Lucid and topical, the book will be of interest to scholars and researchers of indigenous studies, anthropology, social anthropology, sociology, political sciences, international relations, border studies, and South Asian studies, especially those concerned with Bangladesh."

The volume is divided into three parts, bridging different disciplinary perspectives in examining different dimensions of the language of extremism in case studies from around the world. The first section features contributions on extremist language from a political lens, such as in election campaigns and media discourse. The second part looks at religious extremism and language used for the purposes of jihadist radicalisation and recruitment. A final section reflects on policy development, peace education, and conflict resolution, toward discussing ways to subvert radicalized discourses and future research building on these efforts. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in discourse analysis, language and communication, and language education, as well as related fields such as psychology, political science, and sociology"--

Kurzfassung: "This book provides a clear and comprehensive introduction to the past, present, and future direction of death rituals and deathcare systems within Japan. As Japan heads toward a precarious future shaped by its super-aging society, secularisation, and economic stagnation, the socioreligious structures that once organised death and funerary practice are becoming increasingly unstable. In their place, new technologies and rituals for the farewell of the dead, handling of cremains, and commemoration of the ancestors have begun to emerge. The work is informed by the authors' extensive research within Japan's funeral, cemetery, and memorialisation sectors and the latest Japanese data sources and academic publications, not currently available in English. Providing readily accessible and contextualising information, this book will be an essential reference for graduate students and academics, as well as international policymakers and deathcare practitioners"--

The book explores the broader impact of colonialism and neocolonialism on language policies and practices, drawing on case studies from such countries as Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. The volume is organized thematically around four different sections, looking at issues around linguistic diversity across different sectors including contemporary debates on African languages, language education, youth languages, and language documentation. Taken together, the collection seeks to offer readers with a more nuanced understanding of fundamental issues in the development of multilingualism across different countries in Southern Africa today and encourage future research on multilingualism in Africa more broadly. The volume will be of interest to students and scholars in multilingualism, sociolinguistics, language policies, language education, and African studies"--

Kurzfassung: "This edited volume proposes to revisit the development of recreational and professional sporting activities in the French capital between 1854 and 2024. It comprises fifteen chapters surveying the rich and multifaceted history of athletic practices in Paris, and constitutes the first comprehensive piece of scholarship exclusively dedicated to the relationship between sport, history, and culture in the City of Light. This collection articulates and emphasizes the sustained presence and impact of sports in Parisian lives for over a century and a half, at the same time as it encourages readers to think about sports as a form of cultural expression able to alter national, regional, and individual identity, in other words, as a form of entertainment able to shift our perception of leisure and spectatorship, an activity able to transform urban spaces and social norms. To this end, Sport in Paris proposes complementary perspectives, by not only addressing multiple sporting disciplines (tennis, football, boxing, etc.) but also stressing interdisciplinary approaches (history of the press, urbanism, health studies, literary geography, etc.)"--

Kurzfassung: "Robert Wedderburn (1762–1834/5) was one of the most charismatic, irascible, and radical intellectuals of the eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Atlantic world. Born to an enslaved woman and a slavemaster in Jamaica, and moving in the radical working-class circles of London, Wedderburn made his name as a fiery political writer and orator--before dying, forgotten, in poverty. Among the few abolitionists bold enough to publicly call for the enslaved in the British West Indies to rise up and violently overthrow their colonial 'masters,' Wedderburn was also among the most outspoken and--amid an increasingly repressive British establishment--dangerous advocates for domestic political reform and working-class rights. From award-winning scholar Ryan Hanley, this is the first full-length biography of a man increasingly recognized as central to Black radical political thought in the Revolutionary Atlantic. Tapping newly rediscovered sources, Hanley details Wedderburn’s extraordinary public and private life, explores the central influence of enslaved women on his political ideas, and offers fresh analysis of his contributions to British political thought and activism." --

Kurzfassung: "This book analyzes the process of national identity formation and identification of children born into formal and informal Polish-German relationships in Poland and Germany, and how that process is impacted by their upbringing at the intersection of two cultures. The sociological-historical approach explores a wide range of processes in interethnic couples related to the case at hand, such as migration, acculturation, and assimilation, as well as integration and increased participation in the structures of the host country, ties with the country of origin, generational changes and decreasing knowledge of the native tongue, and developments affecting mixed partnerships and their children. Taking an original approach to its focus on the long-term relationships between bilingualism and biculturalism and their impact on national identity and identification, the book considers the future and significance of binational and interethnic families and their children in the European integration process and European identity. This volume will appeal to sociologists, historians, political scientists, anthropologists, and linguists, and especially to students and scholars interested in the relations between national, linguistic, and political matters"--

Kurzfassung: "Whether the plight of refugees or the recent pandemic, the climate crisis or systemic racism, so much turns on the care and concern we can muster for lives and circumstances beyond our own. And yet, the deep divides of national life in the United States have made effective action on such matters a serious and sometimes intractable challenge. Why is it so difficult to acknowledge and address the intertwining of our lives with others? Over the last eight years, anthropologist Anand Pandian has crisscrossed the United States talking with Americans of all kinds to make sense of the ruptures in our physical and psychological social fabric. Insider vs outsider, familiar vs stranger, safety vs threat: these stark distinctions are anchored and sustained by the makeup of so much of contemporary American life, from fortified neighborhoods to bulked-up cars, from visions of the body as an armored fortress, to media that shut out contrary perspectives. This array of interlocking divides make it difficult to take unfamiliar people and perspectives seriously; harder to acknowledge the needs of strangers, to trust their motives and empathize with their struggles. Using the tools of an anthropologist, Pandian interweaves his vivid and challenging encounters with salesmen and truck drivers, police officers and urban planners, and activists for racial and environmental justice with fascinating historical and cultural analysis that challenges us to think beyond the twists and turns of our immediate present. While our impasses draw from deep American histories of segregation and suspicion, Pandian shows us how the work of mutual aid and communal caretaking can help us surface more radical visions for a life in common with others across the rigid lines we take so easily for granted, and learn anew how to meet strangers in this land as potential kin"--

Kurzfassung: "Black British Music in America 1967-2000: Atlantic Crossover historically examines musical and cultural relationships through popular music recordings, exploring the transatlantic journeys via academic, critical and commercial reception of the music. It addresses an overlooked area of Black popular music, investigating the fluctuating fortunes of artists and the contradictions of exporting such recordings to America. Examining a complex history spanning the last four decades of the twentieth century, the author reveals the chronologies, and the recording industry circumstances shaping the presence of Black British music in America. Readers will discover the conditions under which key recordings were made and released, through detailed analysis and new interviews with participating producers and artists. Including exploration of chart histories, this book also dissects the content of the recordings, uncovering the elements that made many of them successful. Black British Music in America 1967-2000 will interest all those who study popular music, cultural studies, and music production, as well as popular music listeners"--

Kurzfassung: "Claiming Citizenship looks at Indian Americans, currently the second-largest group of immigrants in the United States, and a group that has seen significant representation in the three most recent presidential administrations. Prema Kurien asks how Indian Americans have become a rising political force given that they have not followed the traditional, recommended model of political influence. She examines the dialectical process through which immigrants conform to the structures and cultures of the society to which they have immigrated, but also work to transform their adopted homelands to accommodate their unique needs."--

Kurzfassung: "This edited book argues that a new perspective on immigration is needed: as Western societies age, and their populations stagnate or decline, and immigrants are increasingly required, the old view that it is a privilege for immigrants to move from less developed to more developed countries needs to be replaced by questions about how attractive host countries are to immigrants, and not just in economic, but also in social, political and cultural terms. Considering in detail the situation in Japan and Germany - Japan where there are hardly any Japanese behind cash registers in convenience stores, Germany where retirement homes would no longer function without foreign nursing staff - the book analyses the needs of host countries from a demographic standpoint, the desires of migrants in terms of education, training, and labour market participation, and policies and actions on the part of the state and civil society in rendering moving to and living in these countries worthwhile. Bringing together leading scholars, practitioners, and NGO representatives active in diverse aspects of migration, this book will be a valuable resource to students and scholars with an interest in immigration issues in Germany and Japan, and Europe and Asia more broadly

Kurzfassung: "When acclaimed labor historian Julie Greene researched her book The Canal Builders, which went on to be nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 2009, she explored a cache of first-person essays written in 1963 by the Afro-Caribbean people, mainly Jamaican and Barbadian, who migrated to the Isthmus of Panama to work as diggers, track shifters, or domestic servants in the Canal Zone. Held at the Library of Congress and stored in Box 25 of the Isthmian Historical Society Collection, they constitute the best primary source in existence on Caribbean workers' experiences during the construction project. Now Greene returns to this fascinating archive, and in this book, shares what it was like to be a migrant laborer on the construction of the Panama Canal. Caribbean workers faced life-threatening illnesses, accidents, racial discrimination, and culture clashes as well as the opportunity to materially improve their lives. Greene offers new details on the strategies of the people who built the canal and examines how colonialism, xenophobia, and racism shaped the process of writing and archiving the testimonies into Box 25."

Kurzfassung: Scholar and musician Jessie Cox foregrounds the experience of Black Swiss through sound and music, showing how work by Black Swiss musicians opens up new ways of hearing and exploring the radical potential of Black thought.
Kurzfassung: "In Sounds of Black Switzerland Jessie Cox examines Black lives in Switzerland, making audible the experience of Black Swiss through sound and music. Writing not just as a scholar, but also as a composer and musician, and including himself in the nebulous category of Black Swiss, Cox clarifies and brings to the fore an identity previously hard to define within Swiss culture. Taking Swiss-Nigerian composer Charles Uzor's pieces for George Floyd as a centerpiece, the book moves by way of the globality of Black Lives Matter protests to tackle the particularities of antiblackness in Switzerland and to ultimately shift our thinking, with blackness, as it pertains citizenship, immigration laws, gender, kinship, and belonging. Cox's work affirms the value of Black life through sound, while also critiquing antiblackness as a cause of erasure, silence, and limitation. By combining listening practices with theoretical discussions of antiblackness, Black diaspora, and Black life in modern European spaces, Sounds of Black Switzerland examines aspects habitually overlooked by mainstream knowledge and rethinks what it means to be Black in predominantly white European nation-states"--

Kurzfassung: "Without an official homeland, argues Karam Dana, the Palestinian political self by necessity assumes the form of global collective activism. The book takes a historical and multidisciplinary approach to the issue of Palestinian activism from the start of the conflict to the present day. Dana, himself a Palestinian American, draws on interviews with key Palestinian expatriate activists, historical documents, and public opinion data to examine the impact of global Palestinian exiled communities on the creation and molding of a refined Palestinian identity both in the United States and in the broader international community. The book explores the ways that Palestinian identity is strengthened by the lack of a defined home nation and how a coalition built on exile orients itself on a right of return to a distant homeland, even after many generations have strong roots in their adopted countries. Palestine is an enduring issue in global politics, and To Stand with Palestine is a remarkable and timely study that gives a unique inside look at how Palestinians view their political selves and their place in the geopolitical order."

Kurzfassung: "This Handbook illustrates the many ways that progressive rock and metal music forge striking engagements with literary texts and themes. The authors and their objects of analytic inquiry offer global and diverse perspectives on these genres and their literary connections: from ancient times to the modern world, from children's literature to epic poetry, from mythology to science fiction, and from esoteric fantasy to harsh political criticism. The musical treatments of these literary materials span the continents from South and North America through Europe and Asia. The collection presents critical perspectives on the enduring and complex relationships between words and music as these are expressed in progressive rock and metal. The book is aimed primarily at an academic market, valuable for second through final year students on undergraduate courses devoted to both popular music and to literary studies, and to postgraduate programs and researchers in a range of fields, including: popular music studies, musicology, creative music performance and composition, songwriting, literary studies, narrative studies, folklore studies, science fiction studies, cultural studies, liberal studies, and sociology, and for media and history courses that have an interest in the intersection of narratives, music and society"--

Kurzfassung: "Takezawa, Harrison, Tanabe and their contributors present a multi-sited, transnational, and intercultural perspective on racism, shifting its emphasis away from the conventional North Atlantic interpretive frameworks to better understand its fundamental nature. Racism is not a uniquely transatlantic phenomenon but, because it is most often understood within Euro-American paradigms, its salience in other contexts is often less visible. The chapters in this volume analyse the process by which fundamentally invisible differences have been made visible, and various groups and communities have been marked, essentialized, and substantialized under a range of social, political and cultural conditions. Focussing on the space between the visible and invisible, they evaluate the dynamics by which invisible differences are rendered visible, and by which visible differences render other differences invisible. In doing so they promote a decentering of Western-centred frameworks, and elucidate continuities with and discontinuities from past era of racial antagonism and conflict. They look at case studies ranging from Japan, India, and Southeast Asia, to Iceland, the U.S. and intra-"white" racism in Europe. The strength of this work lies in its exploration of the varied modalities of race and racism, particularly those that deviate from the conventional, visibly identifiable notions of race, thus broadening the understanding of racism beyond traditional paradigms. An important contribution to the re-worlding of the study of racism, for scholars, researchers and students of anthropology, sociology, ethnic studies, and intercultural studies"--

Kurzfassung: "Award-winning historian, professor, and journalist Tao Leigh Goffe, launches an investigation of the Caribbean as the seat of corrupt Western wealth and environmental exploitation. When Christopher Columbus arrived on the Caribbean island of Guanahaní, it was remade, at least in mythology, as Eden. Since then, the Caribbean and its peoples have paid the price of relentless Western exploitation and abuses, falling prey to the planting of sugarcane and other cash crops. In Dark Laboratory, Goffe embarks on a historical journey into the influences that have made these islands-from Jamaica and Aruba to Cuba and Martinique-a target of Western capitalism and the foundation of the global economy as we know it today. Through the lens of personal and family memoir, as well as cultural and social history, Goffe seeks to radically transform how we conceive of Blackness, natural history, colonialism, and the climate crisis. Her writing considers the legacy of slavery and indentured servitude as Chinese laborers worked alongside enslaved Black people to excavate products like sugarcane and guano-in its day more valuable than gold-from these island nations. How can we combat contemporary racism and environmental degradation using the Caribbean and its dark history as guide? In autobiographical writing that shines light on both environmental upheaval and racial subjugation, Goffe offers solutions based on island ecologies, locating the origins of racism and the climate catastrophe in the colonization of the Caribbean. Her combination of personal narrative and research provides a record of the violence that has shaped these nations and a testament to our capacity for renewal. In stunning, lyrical prose, Goffe dismantles our longest-held notions about island utopias and proposes new modes of thinking about the ruin and restoration of the environment"--

Kurzfassung: "The first comprehensive overview of Werner Sollors' ground-breaking work on culture and ethnicity.Born in Silesia, raised in the Frankfurt area and educated in Berlin, Werner Sollors has spent most of his career at Harvard University in the United States and is regarded, in Cornel West’s words, ‘as one of the finest scholars that we have on race and cultural hybridity in both this country and the world’. This Reader offers the first comprehensive overview of the work of a central figure in the field of ethnic studies. The pieces collected here range from Puritan New England to contemporary Germany, from ‘Exodus’ to Mary Antin’s Promised Land, from the ‘Curse of Ham’ to Teju Cole. They attest to Sollors’ deep historical sensibilities, his attention to textual detail and his awareness of the costs and opportunities of both cosmopolitan ideals and particularist commitments, whilst addressing a central question: why does modernisation take the form of ethnicisation in many places around the globe? The collected essays are complemented by a detailed introduction by Daniel G. Williams which foregrounds some of the key emphases and tensions in Sollors’ writings."

Kurzfassung: "A surprising and beautiful meditation on the color blue - and its fascinating role in Black history and culture - from National Book Award winner Imani Perry. Throughout history, the concept of Blackness has been remarkably intertwined with another color: blue. In daily life, it is evoked in countless ways. Blue skies and blue water offer hope for that which lies beyond the current conditions. But blue is also the color of deep melancholy and heartache, echoing Louis Armstrong's question, "What did I do to be so Black and blue?" In this book, celebrated author Imani Perry uses the world's favorite color as a springboard for a riveting emotional, cultural, and spiritual journey--an examination of race and Blackness that transcends politics or ideology."-- Provided by publisher

Kurzfassung: "With this book, Houri Berberian and Talinn Grigor offer the first history of Armenian women in modern Iran. Foregrounding the work of Armenian women's organizations, the authors trace minoritarian politics and the shifting relationships among doubly minoritized Armenian female subjects, Iran's central nodes of power, and the Irano-Armenian patriarchal institutions of church and political parties. Engaging broader considerations around modernization, nationalism, and feminism, this book makes a conceptually rich contribution to how we think about the history of women and minoritized peoples. Berberian and Grigor read archival, textual, visual, and oral history sources together and against one another to challenge conventional notions of "the archive" and transform silences and absences into audible and visual presences. Understanding minoritarian politics as formulated by women through their various forms of public and intellectual activisms, this book provides a groundbreaking intervention in Iran's history of modernization, Armenian diasporic history, and Iranian and Armenian feminist historiography."

Kurzfassung: "This book brings together a collection of diverse contributors to discuss bisexual erasure and biphobia, and how this intersects with racism, sexism, ableism, and transphobia. Amplifying the voices of a group often unheard and erased, this edited collection explores and celebrates the experiences, stories, and complexities of bisexual identity, providing tools to help dismantle the dehumanization of erasure, move beyond the gender binary, and increase visibility of multiple bisexualities. Beginning by outlining key definitions, labels, and context, each chapter addresses an identity or experience that intersects with bisexual identity, such as disability, masculinity, femininity, gender diverse identities, media, religion, dating apps, porn, non-monogamy, intimate partner violence, aging, kink and sex work. Each chapter begins with theoretical research before illuminating the personal narratives of bisexual people, especially people of color, that reflect the negative impact of bisexual erasure as well as the joy, beauty, and resilience of bisexuality. Engaging and powerful, this book will help sex therapists, students, and educators enhance their inclusive and supportive practices. It will also be of immense interest to bisexual people so they may see diverse realities, celebrating stories of resistance and joy"--

Kurzfassung: "Beats Not Beatings: The Rise of Hip Hop Criminology is a powerful radical intersectional scholarly-activist collection of liberation-based articles by "Mic" Crenshaw, Chandra Ward, Maurece Graham, Daniel White Hodge, Anthony J. Nocella II, Antonio Quintana, Andrea N. Hunt, Tammy D. Rhodes, Kenneth Culton, Andre Douglas Pond Cummings, Victor Mendoza, Adam de Paor-Evans, Lenard G. Gomes, Elloit Cardozo, and Tasha Iglesias that center marginalized and oppressed stories and experiences. This book emerged out of the Black Lives Matter and prison abolition movements. This collection challenges state violence as well as racist and classiest laws such as the school to prison pipeline, redlining, three strikes, mandatory minimums, truancy, felons cannot vote, check the box, and curfew. This thought-provoking insightful text demands that those affected by the criminal justice system should be leading the conversation on how it is broken, managed, and needs to be transformed. Critical theorist Anthony J. Nocella II, an innovative intersectional public intellectual, pushes educators and society to make connections and think outside the box on how Hip Hop has always had the answers on how to dismantle racism and classism by the U.S. criminal justice system. This book explains how Hip Hop brilliantly since day one has the answer to ending violence and crime in society, it is time to listen, get in where you fit in, or get out of the way"--

Kurzfassung: "Imparting crucial insights into the digital evolution of far-right extremism and its challenges, this book explores how far-right extremism has transformed, utilizing digital spaces for communication and employing coded language to evade detection. Far-right extremism has spread extensively across online platforms. Flourishing within echo chambers, these groups propagate different types of online and offline actions and advance their hateful ideologies to a wide-ranging audience. Highlighting the intricacies surrounding far-right extremism, distinguishing it from terrorism and examining its contemporary digital manifestations, this study sheds light on how far-right groups utilize online platforms for communication, radicalization, and on-ground actions, relying on alternative truths, misinformation, conspiracy theories, fashion, and memes to connect with like-minded individuals. The book also addresses content moderation challenges and the impact of rising populism in today's political climate, which fuels societal divisions and uncertainty. Far-Right Extremism Online is a valuable resource for academics, students, analysts, and professionals working in counter-extremism, cybersecurity, digital communication, and national security. It is also an indispensable guide for those concerned about far-right extremism in the digital age."

Kurzfassung: "In the world of online dating, race-based discrimination is not only tolerated, but encouraged as part of a pervasive belief that it is simply a neutral, personal choice about one's romantic partner. Indeed, it is so much a part of our inherited wisdom about dating and romance that it actually directs the algorithmic infrastructures of most major online dating platforms, such that they openly reproduce racist and sexist hierarchies. In, Not My Type: Automating Sexual Racism in Online Dating, Apryl Williams presents a socio-technical exploration of dating platforms' algorithms, their lack of transparency, the legal and ethical discourse in these companies' community guidelines, and accounts from individual users in order to argue that sexual racism is a central feature of today's online dating culture. She discusses this reality in the context of facial recognition and sorting software as well as user experiences, drawing parallels to the long history of eugenics and banned interracial partnerships. Ultimately, Williams calls for, both a reconceptualization of the technology and policies that govern dating agencies, and also a reexamination of sociocultural beliefs about attraction, beauty, and desirability"--

Kurzfassung: An innovative argument that vindicates our normative commitment to basic equality, synthesising philosophy, history, and psychologyWhat makes human beings one another's equals? That we are ";basic equals"; has become a bedrock assumption in Western moral and political philosophy. And yet establishing why we ought to believe this claim has proved fiendishly difficult, floundering in the face of the many inequalities that characterise the human condition. In this provocative work, Paul Sagar offers a novel approach to explaining and justifying basic equality. Rather than attempting to find an independent foundation for basic equality, he argues, we should instead come to see our commitment to this idea as the result of the practice of treating others as equals. Moreover, he continues, it is not enough to grapple with the problem through philosophy alone-by just thinking very hard, in our armchairs; we must draw insights from history and psychology as well.Sagar writes that, as things stand, there appear to be no good arguments for believing in the truth of basic equality. Indeed, for much of Western intellectual history and social practice, basic inequality has been the default position. How is it then, Sagar asks, that in Western societies, in a period of less than a century, basic equality emerged as the dominant view? Sagar approaches this not as a mere philosophical puzzle, but as a dramatic historical development. In so doing, he shows us what is at stake when human beings treat one another as equals just because they are human beings

Kurzfassung: "Exploring Ireland's Viking-Age Towns explores the emergence of towns, urban lifestyles and urban identities in Ireland coinciding with the arrival of the Vikings and the appearance of the post-and-wattle Type 1 house. These houses reflect this crucial transition to urban living with its attendant changes for individuals, households, and society. Exploring Ireland's Viking-Age Towns uses household archaeology as a lens to explore the materiality, variability and day-to-day experiences of living in these houses. It moves from the intimate scale of individual households to the larger scale of Ireland's earliest urban communities. For the first time, this book considers how these houses were more than just buildings: they were homes, important places where people lived, worked and died. These new towns were busy places, with a multitude of people, ideas and things. This book uses the mass of archaeological data to undertake comparative analyses of houses and properties, artefact distribution patterns and access analysis studies to interrogate some 500 Viking-Age urban houses. This analysis is structured in three parts, an investigation of the houses, the households and the town. Exploring Ireland's Viking-Age Towns discusses how these new urban households managed their homes to create a sense of place and belonging in these new environments and allow themselves to develop a new, urban identity. This book is suited to advanced students and specialists of the Viking Age in Ireland but archaeologists and historians of the early medieval and Viking worlds will find much of interest here. It will also appeal to readers with interests in the archaeology of house and home, households, identities and urban studies."

Kurzfassung: "The extraordinary untold story of how Irish and Jewish immigrants worked together to secure legitimacy in America. Popular belief holds that the various ethnic groups that emigrated to the United States at the turn of the twentieth century regarded one another with open hostility, fiercely competing for limited resources and even coming to blows in the crowded neighborhoods of major cities. One of the most enduring stereotypes is that of rabidly anti-Semitic Irish Catholics, like Father Charles Coughlin of Boston and the sensationalized Gangs of New York trope of Irish street thugs attacking defenseless Jewish immigrants. In Opening Doors, Hasia Diner, one of the world's preeminent historians of immigration, tells a very different story; far from confrontational, the prevailing relationships between Jewish and Irish Americans were overwhelmingly cooperative, and the two groups were dependent upon one another to secure stable and upwardly mobile lives in their new home.
Kurzfassung: The Irish had emigrated to American cities en masse a generation before the first major wave of Jewish immigrants arrived, and had already entrenched themselves in positions of influence in urban governments, public education, and the labor movement. Jewish newcomers recognized the value of aligning themselves with another group of religious outsiders who were able to stand up and demand rights and respect despite widespread discrimination from the Protestant establishment, and the Irish realized that they could protect their political influence by mentoring their new neighbors in the intricacies of American life. Opening Doors draws from a deep well of historical sources to show how Irish and Jewish Americans became steadfast allies in classrooms, picket lines, and political machines, and ultimately helped one another become key power players in shaping America's future.
Kurzfassung: In the wake of rising anti-Semitism and xenophobia today, this informative and accessible work offers an inspiring look at a time when two very different groups were able to find common ground and work together to overcome bigotry, gain representation, and move the country in a more inclusive direction"--

Kurzfassung: "Through listening to kids in Massachusetts and Mississippi talk about growing up in the era of Trump, this book reveals what kids today think and feel about racism in the United States-and what this might mean for the future"--
Kurzfassung: "In Children of a Troubled Time, award-winning sociologist Margaret A. Hagerman amplifies the voices of children who grew up during Trump’s presidency and explores how they learn about race in America today. Hagerman interviewed nearly fifty children between the ages of ten to thirteen in two dramatically different political landscapes: Mississippi and Massachusetts. Hagerman interviewed kids who identified as conservative and liberal in both places as well as kids from different racial groups. She discovered remarkably similar patterns in the ideas expressed by these children. Racism, she asserts, is not just a local or regional phenomenon: it is a broad American project affecting childhoods across the country. In Hagerman’s emotionally compelling interviews, children describe what it is like to come of age during years of deep political and racial divide, and how being a kid during the Trump era shaped their views on racism, democracy, and America as a whole. Children’s racialized emotions are also central to this book: disgust and discomfort, fear and solidarity, dominance and apathy. This book expands our understanding of how the rising generation grapples with the complexities of racism and raises critical questions about the future of American society." --
