Abstract:
"Highly important scholarly treatment of Bahamian socioeconomic history in post-emancipation period. In addition to examining last phases of slavery in both rural and urban settings, looks at export economies of salt, cotton, pineapples, and sponges, and their roles in emergence of mercantile middle class.
