Abstract: A Victorian Freud: A Rhetorical Analysis of Jewish Second-Wave Feminist Criticism of Freud -- Incest, Exogamy, and Jewishness on Roseanne -- Woody, Wood Yi, and Communion Wafers -- Blood Libel Humor and Incest Easter Eggs -- "Till a Khusin Comes Along" -- Conclusion.
Abstract: "By analyzing how various media told stories about Jewish celebrities and incest, Unsettling illustrates how Jewish community protective politics impacted the representation of white male Jewish masculinity in the 1990s. Chapters on Woody Allen, Roseanne Barr, and Henry Roth demonstrate how media coverage of their respective incest denials (Allen), allegations (Barr), and confessions (Roth) intersect with a history of sexual antisemitism, while an introductory chapter on Jewish second-wave feminist criticism of Sigmund Freud considers how Freud became "white" in these discussions. Unsettling reveals how film, TV, and literature have helped displace once prevalent antisemitic stereotypes onto those who are non-Jewish, nonwhite, and poor. In considering how whiteness functions for an ethno-religious group with historic vulnerability to incest stereotype as well as contemporary white privilege, Unsettling demonstrates how white Jewish men accused of incest, and even those who defiantly confess it, became improbably sympathetic figures representing supposed white male vulnerability"--

Abstract: "This innovative text bridges media theory, psychology, and interpersonal communication by describing how our relationships with media emulate the relationships we develop with friends and romantic partners through their ability to replicate intimacy, regularity, and reciprocity. In research-rich, conversational chapters, the author applies psychological principles to understand how nine influential media technologies - theatrical film, recorded music, consumer market cameras, radio, network and cable television, tape cassettes, video gaming, and dialup internet service providers - irreversibly changed the communication environment, culture, and psychological expectations that we then apply to future media technologies. With special attention to mediums absent from the traditional literature, including recorded music, cable television, and magnetic tape, this book encourages readers to critically reflect on their own past relationships with media and consider the present environment and the future of media given their own personal habits. 20th Century Media and the American Psyche is ideal for media studies, communication, and psychology students, scholars, and industry professionals, as well as anyone interested in a greater understanding of the psychological significance of media technology, usage, and adoption across the past 150 years"--

Abstract: "The Stone and the Wireless redefines the concept of media to animate the dynamic relations between technics and signification, history and theory, and science and culture in turn-of-the-twentieth century China. Analyzing diplomatic diaries, early science fiction, political and social treatises, the popular press, lithography, photography, and telegrams, Shaoling Ma argues that media do not mediate between this and that entity before first mediating between some version of its already mediated form as discursive representations in texts and images, and the apparently unmediated technical device or process. Insofar as any media history must acknowledge that its very sources are themselves media documents, this book is at its heart a challenge to the epistemological divides between technics and signification, history and theory, science and culture"--

Going behind the scenes, she examines the way visual journalists negotiate with police and court officials to cover the criminal justice system, and how officials endeavour to create favourable narratives by controlling what the public sees.

Abstract: How did Americans come to believe that working at home is feasible, productive, and desirable? Easy Living examines how the idea of working within the home was constructed and disseminated in popular culture and mass media during the twentieth century. Through the analysis of national magazines and newspapers, television and film, and marketing and advertising materials from the housing, telecommunications, and office technology industries, Easy Living traces changing concepts about what it meant to work in the home. These ideas reflected larger social, political-economic, and technological trends of the times. Elizabeth A. Patton reveals that the notion of the home as a space that exists solely in the private sphere is a myth, as the social meaning of the home and its market value in relation to the public sphere are intricately linked

Abstract: How media propagates and challenges racismFrom Black Panther to #OscarsSoWhite, the concept of "race," and how it is represented in media, has continued to attract attention in the public eye. In Racialized Media, Matthew W. Hughey, Emma González-Lesser, and the contributors to this important new collection of original essays provide a blueprint to this new, ever-changing media landscape. With sweeping breadth, contributors examine a number of different mediums, including film, television, books, newspapers, social media, video games, and comics. Each chapter explores the impact of contemporary media on racial politics, culture, and meaning in society. Focusing on producers, gatekeepers, and consumers of media, this book offers an inside look at our media-saturated world, and the impact it has on our understanding of race, ethnicity, and more. Through an interdisciplinary lens, Racialized Media provides a much-needed look at the role of race and ethnicity in all phases of media production, distribution, and reception

Abstract: Introduction: What's in a word? -- Understanding engagement as transmedia -- Conversation vs captivation : the type of engagement -- Affect and affection : the form of engagement -- Calculating the cost : the cognitive and contextual work of engagement -- Engagement that's worth it : valuating engagement as economic and discursive commodity -- The temporal dynamics of engagement.
Abstract: "This book offers a new, interdisciplinary model for understanding audience engagement as a type of behaviour, a form of response and a cost to audiences that, combined, offer value to the screen industries. It offers a way of understanding audience engagement that is not restricted to a single media, but instead accounts for and adapts to the various ways in which screen content is experienced. Offering a unique approach by presenting practitioner and audience perspectives, it is perfect for students and scholars working in film and television studies, as well as media industries and audience studies"--

Abstract: "When we think about the "pictures in our heads" that media create and perpetuate, what images are we truly referencing? Issues of media stereotypes and representation (both past and present) are crucial to advancing media literacy. Media Stereotypes: From Ageism to Xenophobia becomes one-stop shopping for synthesizing what we know within the composite of stereotyping research in the United States. Utilizing a cast of top American scholars with deep roots in asking stereotype-based questions, this book is essential reading for those wishing to understand what we know about past and present media representations as well as those wishing to take the baton and continue to advance media stereotyping research in the future"--

Abstract: "Racialism and Media: Black-ish, Black Jesus and the First Black American President is an exploration of how the nature of racial ideology has changed in our society. Yes, there are still ugly racists who push uglier racism, but there are also popular constructions of race routinely woven into mediated images and messages. This book examines selected exemplars of racialism moving beyond traditional racism. In the Twenty-First century, we need a more nuanced understanding of racial constructions. Denouncing anything and everything problematic as racist or racism simply does not work, especially if we want to move toward a real solution to America's race problems. Racialism involves images and messages that are produced, distributed, and consumed repetitively and intertextually based on stereotypes, biased framing, and historical myths about African American culture. These images and messages are eventually normalized through the media, ultimately shaping and influencing societal ideology and behavior. Through the lens of critical race theory chapters examine issues of intersectionality in Crash, changing Black identity in Black-ish, the balancing of stereotypes in prime-time black male and female roles, the power of Black images and messages in advertising, the cultural wealth offered through Black Twitter, biased media framing of the first Black American President, the satirical parody of Black Jesus, contemporary Zip Coon stereotypes in film, the problematic popularity of ghettofabulous black culture, and finally the evolution of black representation in science fiction"--

Abstract: "Media always involve technologies. Understanding media means understanding their technologies. But little can be learned from just looking at redundant pieces of equipment. The rapidly developing approach of hands on history can open our minds to new perceptions of how media technologies work and how we work with them. Hands On Media History explores the whole range of hands on history techniques for the first time. It offers both practical guides and general perspectives. It covers both analogue and digital media; film, television, video, gaming, photography and recorded sound. Essays in the collection explore the difficult questions of reconstruction and historical memory, and the issues of equipment degradation and loss. Hands on Media History is concerned with both the professional and the amateur, the producers and the users. Essays outline the wide variety of approaches to understanding media history through its technologies, including the issue of fresh uses for old equipment and artefacts. Hands on media history offers a new perspective on one of the modern era's most urgent questions: what is the relationship between people and the technologies they use every day?"--

Abstract: "Communication, like the atmosphere itself, is ubiquitous and essential for humans and with the development of new technologies, such as wireless internet, 3D printing and virtual reality, it has become almost impossible to live without it. In addition, means of communication have changed immeasurably. This book proposes a new research paradigm that incorporates new features and factors of communication and a new theoretical framework named "immersive communication". Pointing out that communication today has moved beyond the bi-directional, mass communication of "the second media age" to ubiquitous, immersive communication in "the third media age", the author discusses the definition, characteristics, information structure, and models of immersive communication using various examples including Fitbit, Apple, 4G and other technologies, while envisioning future applications of the immersive communication model. Scholars and students of communication studies, especially those interested in the manifestations of the new media age, will all benefit from this book. It will also appeal to readers interested in new media and communication theories"

Abstract: Introduction: the (inter)face in an era of pervasive death --Beyond finitude: the place of death in the modern human sciences --"Let's die together": online suicide pacts in East Asia(with Nurual Amillin Hussain) --Rethinking personhood: death selfies, digital remains and dividuals --The coronation of Choi Jin-sil: celebrity death, media events and civil religiosity --Terror as death regime: the spectacle of beheading --The state, death and memory in the work of Ai Weiwei --Image-ing the tragic: the metapicture of banal suffering --Life in an uncertain era: biopolitics, thanatopolitics and necropolitics.
Abstract: "In modern times, death is understood to have undergone a transformation not unlike religion. Whereas in the past it was out in the open, it now resides mostly in specialized spaces of sequestration - funeral homes, hospitals, and other medical facilities. A mainstay in so-called traditional societies in the form of ritual practices, death was usually messy but meaningful, with the questions of what happens to the dead or where they go lying at the heart of traditional culture and religion. In modernity, however, we are said to have effectively sanitized it, embalmed it and packaged it - but it seems that death is back. In the current era marked by economic, political and social uncertainty, we see it on television, on the Internet; we see it almost everywhere. (Inter)Facing Death analyzes the nexus of death and digital culture in the contemporary moment in the context of recent developments in social, cultural and political theory. It argues that death today can be thought of as "interfaced," that is mediated and expressed, in various aspects of contemporary life rather than put to the side or overcome as many narratives of modernity have suggested. Employing concepts from anthropology, sociology, media studies and communications, (Inter)Facing Death examines diverse phenomena where death and digital culture meet, including art, online suicide pacts, the mourning of celebrity deaths, terrorist beheadings and selfies. Providing new lines of thinking about one of the oldest questions facing the human and social sciences, this book will appeal to scholars and students of social and political theory, anthropology, sociology and cultural and media studies with interests in death"--

Abstract: "The Gender of Latinidad: Uses and Abuses of Hybridity explores the way Latina representations have exploded onto mainstream popular culture--and into American consciousness. From "J Lo's butt", Penelope Cruz, and steamy tele-novellas, to Bratz and Flava dolls and the PBS cartoon, "Dora the Explorer", the volume will probe the dynamic manner by which Latinas are portrayed, caricatured and commercialized as cultural forms. While Valdivia's focus is primarily here in the United States, she also examines U.S. popular culture as the world's biggest import. By sifting through the current Latino "craze" as well as the usual pop culture clutter--women's magazines, mass-produced and marketed children's toys and books, television, popular music, movies, and celebrity culture--The Gender of Latinidad: Uses and Abuses of Hybridity soberly and sensibly addresses the popular iconography of Latinidad in its everyday location."

Abstract: "The minstrel show occupies a complex and controversial space in the history of American popular culture. While it is seen as a relic of America's deeply shameful and racist past, it also provided the first vehicle by which African-Americans were able to enter the entertainment world. This book investigates the often ignored 20th century history of minstrelsy as it entered the age of mass media, addressing such minstrel stars as Al Jolson, Bing Crosby, and Mickey Rooney. Tracing the history of minstrelsy through to its abrupt end in the 1950s, this book is a chronicle of "modern" minstrelsy and America's rapidly changing values"

Abstract: "Propaganda is a subjective information primarily used to influence an audience and further a political agenda. In China, it has a long history but has been most effective in modern society. What exactly is propaganda? Why does it exist and why does the public tolerate it? The book answers these questions by tracing back to the emergence and development of integrated propaganda and scientific propaganda. On the basis of that, it focuses on the emergence of propaganda concept in China, the establishment of Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China's propaganda concept, intellectuals and propaganda, debate on propaganda concept in China after 1949 as well as the emergence of Propaganda 3.0 that coordinates integrated propaganda and scientific propaganda. Setting propaganda under the framework of modernity, the book explains how different groups have legitimatized propaganda since the 20th century. From a reasonable and neutral standpoint, the author describes the confrontation among various propaganda concepts and discourses, displaying a panorama of the mutual conflicts between nation and individuals, control and freedom, ideas and bodies. Not only will scholars and students studying journalism and communication find this book interesting, professionals working in journalism, advertisement, public relations and publicity will also find it readable and enlightening"--

Abstract: "Postfeminism in Context argues that 'postfeminism', as a critical term, has been too often deployed in ways which fail to account for historical and cultural specificity. Through an analysis across Australian popular culture across three decades - chick lit novels; 'dramedy' television shows; women's magazines; YouTube vlogs; self-help manuals; and newspapers - we find, not the simple disavowal of feminism commonly seen to constitute postfeminist media culture, but a much more complicated, and in many ways more hopeful, picture. Rather than seeing popular culture's attempts to make sense of feminism as inevitably limited or politically reactionary, as is common, our analysis foregrounds the tensions, contradictions and ambiguities that have always been constitutive of postfeminism. Building upon recent scholarship which questions the critical efficacy of postfeminism, we argue that in Australian media, rather than being seen as a thinly veiled form of antifeminism, postfeminism is best conceptualised as a form of popular feminism - marked by both constraints and possibilities. Inevitably, given its transnational nature, we do find some of the core postfeminist tropes, themes, and narratives circulating in Australian popular culture, but that is not all we find. Ultimately, we conclude that Australian postfeminism represents a transitional stage between second wave feminism and the full emergence of a new, as yet unnamed form of feminist politics, which can operate within (and possibly resist) consumer capitalism and neoliberalism. Providing a nuanced account of the varied ways in which feminism has been taken up in Australian media, Postfeminism in Context is essential reading for those interested gender, feminism, and the politics of representation"--

Abstract: "This book portrays international communication from differing perspectives - it examines a number of major trends, stakeholders, and global activities, while promoting no particular philosophical or ideological school, whether of the left or the right. Rather, it seeks to provide information about major international trends of a theoretical, cultural, economic, public policy or foreign relations nature. Moreover, in order to provide a framework for understanding the interconnection between the international communication environment and the global economy, Global Communication documents major historical events that connect the two. It also highlights communication industry mergers, acquisitions and the rise of social media that frequently transcend national boundaries"--

Abstract: "Nick Couldry is one of the world's leading analysts of media power and voice, and has been publishing widely for 25 years. This volume, published 20 years after The Place of Media Power, brings together a rich collection of essays from his earliest to his latest writings, some of them hard to access, plus two previously unpublished chapters. The book's 15 chapters cover a variety of themes from voice to space, from Big Data to democracy, from art to reality television. Taken together, they give a unique insight into the range of Couldry's interests and passions. Throughout, Couldry's commitment to connecting media research to wider debates in philosophy and social theory is clear. A substantial Afterword reflects on the common themes that run throughout his work and this volume, and the particular challenges of grasping media's contribution to social order in an age of datafication. A preface by leading US media scholar Jonathan Gray sets these essays in context. The result is an exciting and clearly-written text that will interest students and researchers of media, culture and social theory across the world"--

Abstract: "China at a Threshold addresses academic concerns surrounding communications technology and state control, looking for an interpretative approach to understand the role media might play in social change so that we might ascertain its impact on social relations. Urging a reconsideration in our understanding of technology as neither liberative nor oppressive, the author advances a proposal that brings social forces into play in their own right. Taking inspiration from thinkers in philosophy and anthropology this title investigates story-telling and liminal characters as real agents in social change so that we might identify alternative forces for change not reducible to technological impact or human proclivity"--

Abstract: "How did Americans come to believe that working at home is feasible, productive, and desirable? Easy Living examines how the idea of working within the home was constructed and disseminated in popular culture and mass media during the twentieth century. Through the analysis of national magazines and newspapers, television and film, and marketing and advertising materials from the housing, telecommunications, and office technology industries, Easy Living traces changing concepts about what it meant to work in the home. These ideas reflected larger social, political-economic, and technological trends of the times. Elizabeth A. Patton reveals that the notion of the home as a space that exists solely in the private sphere is a myth, as the social meaning of the home and its market value in relation to the public sphere are intricately linked."

Abstract: "Whether we are watching TV, surfing the Internet, listening to our iPods, or reading a novel, we are all engaged with media as a member of an audience. Despite the widespread use of this term in our popular culture, the meaning of the "audience" is complex, and it has undergone significant historical shifts as new forms of mediated communication have developed from print, telegraphy, and radio to film, television, and the Internet. Media Audiences explores the concept of media audiences from four broad perspectives: as "victims" of mass media, as market constructions & commodities, as users of media, and as producers & subcultures of mass media. The goal of the text is for students to be able to think critically about the role and status of media audiences in contemporary society, reflecting on their relative power in relation to institutional media producers."--

Abstract: "VIRTUAL PEDOPHILIA examines the cultural construction of the pedophile in relation to the rise of the carceral state and neoliberal tactics of forensic securitization. The pedophile, according to Gillian Harkins, is everywhere and nowhere: he eludes diagnostic and forensic profiling by slipping into the veneer of everyday normality. But it wasn't always this way; in this book, Harkins investigates the changing discourses of pedophilia over the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries to ask why and how the pedophile shifted from a social outcast to the image of white male normality, and why the latter image of the pedophile became a cultural fixation. According to Harkins, this shift was also accompanied by new security regimes: now that the pedophile could no longer be easily detected, the point was to detect potential crime through constant vigilance. Drawing on film, television, and popular culture, Harkins explores how the everyday American was inscripted to "hunt" white male pedophiles, arguing that these cultural texts implied the state and science were no longer sufficient to find the pedophile, thereby creating a biopolitics in which everyone must be on the lookout. Drawing on a Deleuzian interpretation of virtuality as potentiality, as well as the contemporary understanding of virtuality as a condition of technologically produced reality, Harkins positions the pedophile as a virtual construction: an always possible potential whose actuality needs to be determined using modern technologies and security apparatuses. In chapters 1 and 2, Harkins outlines a genealogy of the pedophile from Krafft-Ebings's naming of "paedophilia erotica" in 1886 to today's construction of the virtual pedophile. Chapter 3 focuses on the cultural production of the pedophile by examining the television series Law and Order: Special Victims Unit and To Catch a Predator, and how these shows trained audiences to "detect" pedophiles. Chapter 4 examines the pedophile in documentary and narrative film. In the final chapters, Harkins turns towards queer encounters with the security regimes around pedophilia and sex offenders, and considers what's at stake in the calls to dismantle or reduce sex offender management. This book will be of interest to students of gender and sexuality studies, neoliberalism, carceral studies and the security state, cultural studies, and social theory"--

Abstract: "Theorising Media and Conflict brings together anthropologists as well as media and communication scholars to collectively address the elusive and complex relationship between media and conflict. Through epistemological and methodological reflections and the analyses of various case studies from around the globe, this volume provides evidence for the co-constitutiveness of media and conflict and contributes to their consolidation as a distinct area of scholarship. Practitioners, policymakers, students and scholars who wish to understand the lived realities and dynamics of contemporary conflicts will find this book invaluable."
