Wie ist diese Faszination für altes Handwerk(en) zu erklären? Welche Rolle spielt Gender dabei? Und was sagt es über unsere Arbeitsgesellschaft aus, dass handwerkliche Tätigkeit als legitim und angesehen gilt? Franziska Schaaf geht diesen und weiteren Fragen in ihrer Diskursanalyse systematisch nach und liefert erkenntnisreiche Einsichten über den Wandel des Wertes von Arbeit – auch vor dem Hintergrund der aufstrebenden Plattformökonomie.

    Abstract: A foundational collection of essays that demonstrate how to study race and mediaFrom graphic footage of migrant children in cages to #BlackLivesMatter and #OscarsSoWhite, portrayals and discussions of race dominate the media landscape. Race and Media adopts a wide range of methods to make sense of specific occurrences, from the corporate portrayal of mixed-race identity by 23andMe to the cosmopolitan fetishization of Marie Kondo. As a whole, this collection demonstrates that all forms of media-from the sitcoms we stream to the Twitter feeds we follow-confirm racism and reinforce its ideological frameworks, while simultaneously giving space for new modes of resistance and understanding. In each chapter, a leading media scholar elucidates a set of foundational concepts in the study of race and media-such as the burden of representation, discourses of racialization, multiculturalism, hybridity, and the visuality of race. In doing so, they offer tools for media literacy that include rigorous analysis of texts, ideologies, institutions and structures, audiences and users, and technologies. The authors then apply these concepts to a wide range of media and the diverse communities that engage with them in order to uncover new theoretical frameworks and methodologies. From advertising and music to film festivals, video games, telenovelas, and social media, these essays engage and employ contemporary dialogues and struggles for social justice by racialized communities to push media forward

    Abstract: Vorstellungen von Freundschaft und Kollaboration dominieren bis heute den Diskurs über die Beziehung zwischen nationalsozialistischem Deutschland und der arabischen Welt. Ein Geschichtsbild, das durch die Fokussierung auf den Jerusalemer Mufti Amin al-Husseini und seine Beziehung zu Hitler-Deutschland geprägt wurde. Doch wie sahen direkte Begegnungen von Arabern mit dem Nationalsozialismus aus? Wie wurden Araber in der nationalsozialistischen Rassenideologie verortet? Die vorliegende Arbeit fragt nach der Repräsentation von Arabern in der nationalsozialistischen Propaganda sowie dem Wandel des „Araberbildes“ vor dem Hintergrund kriegsstrategischer Interessen. Am Beispiel der nordafrikanischen Kolonialtruppen, die während des Zweiten Weltkriegs als Soldaten wie auch als Kriegsgefangene auf den europäischen Kriegsschauplätzen präsent waren, rückt Sophie Wagenhofer den Widerspruch zwischen interessenpolitischer Werbung und rassenideologischer Ablehnung in den Mittelpunkt. Die Autorin untersucht unterschiedliche Medien der NS-Propaganda, wie Zeitungs- und Zeitschriftenartikel, Bildmaterial, Flugblätter, Plakate sowie Radio- und Filmbeiträge, deren Gegenstand, aber auch deren Adressaten Araber und die arabische Welt waren. Ergänzt wird dieses Bild durch teils geheime Akten aus dem Archiv des Auswärtigen Amtes sowie dem Bundesarchiv, die die propagandistischen Zielsetzungen des NS-Regimes beleuchten. So wird die Ambivalenz deutlich, die die Beziehung zwischen nationalsozialistischem Deutschland und Arabern prägte, und somit das Bild einer oft unterstellten Affinität zwischen arabischer Welt und dem nationalsozialistischen Deutschland hinterfragt.

    Abstract: Die sogenannte Korean Wave und ihr eigenwilliger Charme haben in den letzten Jahren vor allem in Europa stark an Popularität gewonnen und stellen mit K-Pop, Animationsfilmen und sogenannten K-Dramas eines der wichtigsten Exportgüter Südkoreas dar. Dank des Internets und anderer Massenmedien werden zunehmend ein gemeinsames Bewusstsein und eine länderübergreifende Populärkultur geschaffen, die ein wichtiges Soft-Power-Instrument für Südkorea darstellen. Kim befasst sich in ihrer Arbeit eingehend mit der Bedeutung der Korean Wave für das kommunistisch geprägte Nordkorea, wo Inhalte aus dem Nachbarland meist im Verborgenen konsumiert werden müssen. Das dort vorherrschende hohe Maß an Verzicht und Disziplin stellt einen starken Kontrast zu den bunten und lebhaften Inhalten des Populärkulturphänomens dar, der das Verhältnis der nordkoreanischen Bevölkerung zum Nachbarland in Bezug auf soziale, kulturelle und politische Faktoren beeinflusst. Die vorherrschende Beliebtheit der Korean Wave und der daraus entstehenden Fankultur in Nordkorea ist damit ein bisher einzigartiges Beispiel dafür, wie eine gemeinsame Populärkultur als Soft-Power-Instrument in der Lage ist, bestehende Kultur- und Ländergrenzen zu erodieren, potenziell aufzubrechen und sogar Migrationswellen auszulösen.     Abstract: "Race and Cultural Practice in Popular Culture is an innovative work in which contributors freshly approach the concept of race as a social factor made concrete in popular forms, such as film, television, and music. They collectively push past the reaffirmation of static conceptions of identity, authenticity, or conventional interpretations of stereotypes and bridge the intertextual gap between theories of community enactment and cultural representation. The book also draws together and melds otherwise isolated academic theories and methodologies (case studies, critical readings, and ethnographies, for example) in order to focus on race as an ideological reality and a process that continues to impact lives despite allegations that we live in a post-racial America. The collection is separated into three parts: Visualizing Race (Representational Media), Sounding Race (Soundscape), and Racialization in Place (Theory), each of which takes into account visual, audio, and geographic sites of racial representations respectively. Popular culture forms examined include TV shows such as Orange is the New Black and Breaking Bad, artists such as Shakira and Nicki Minaj, and more"--

    Note: Japan is heterogeneous and culturally diverse, both historically through ancient waves of immigration and in recent years due its foreign relations and internationalization. However, Japan has socially, culturally, politically and intellectually constructed a distinct and homogeneous identity. More recently, such an identity construction has been rightfully questioned and challenged by Japan's culturally diverse groups. This book explores the discursive systems of cultural identities that regenerate the illusion of Japan as a homogeneous nation. Contributors from a variety of disciplines and methodological approaches investigate the ways in which Japan's homogenizing discourses are challenged and modified by counter-homogeneous message systems. They examine the discursive push-and-pull between the homogenizing and heterogenizing vectors, found in domestic and transnational contexts and mobilized by various identity politics, such as gender, sexuality, ethnicity, foreign status, nationality, multiculturalism and internationalization. After offering a careful and critical analysis, the book calls for complicating Japan's homogenizing discourses in nuanced and contextual ways with an explicit goal of working towards a culturally diverse Japan.

    Abstract: "Framed is a wake-up call for those who think that race does not matter in Canada. Pushing the field of Canadian political science in new directions, this groundbreaking work combines an empirical analysis of print media with in-depth interviews of elected officials, former candidates, political staffers, and journalists to reveal the connections between race, media coverage, and politics in Canada. As Erin Tolley shows, overt racism rarely occurs on the pages of Canadian newspapers, but assumptions about race and diversity often influence media coverage. Consequently, as reporters go about selecting which political issues and events to cover, who to quote, and how to frame stories to make them resonate with the public, they give visible minorities less prominent and more negative media coverage than their white counterparts. Further, visible minority politicians are more likely to be portrayed as products of their socio-demographic backgrounds, as uninterested in pressing policy issues, and as less electorally viable. The resulting news coverage weakens Canada's commitment to a robust, inclusive democracy. The problem is systemic, but Tolley offers recommendations to politicians, pundits, journalists, and the public for challenging the racial assumptions that underpin news coverage. By drawing attention to the ways in which race continues to matter, this book provides a new foundation for thinking about diversity and equality in Canada."--

    Abstract: "The undead are very much alive in contemporary entertainment and lore. Indeed, vampires and zombies have garnered attention in print media, cinema, and on television. The vampire, with roots in medieval European folklore, and the zombie, with origins in Afro-Caribbean mythology, have both undergone significant transformations in global culture, proliferating as deviant representatives of the zeitgeist. As this volume demonstrates, distribution of vampires and zombies across time and space has revealed these undead figures to carry multiple meanings. Of all monsters, vampires and zombies seem to be the trendiest--the most regularly incarnate of the undead and the monsters most frequently represented in the media and pop culture. Moreover, both figures have experienced radical reinterpretations. If in the past vampires were evil, blood-sucking exploiters and zombies were brainless victims, they now have metamorphosed into kinder and gentler blood-sucking vampires and crueler, more relentless, flesh-eating zombies. Although the portrayals of both vampires and zombies can be traced back to specific regions and predate mass media, the introduction of mass distribution through film and game technologies has significantly modified their depiction over time and in new environments. Among other topics, contributors discuss zombies in Thai films, vampire novels of Mexico, and undead avatars in horror videogames. This volume--with scholars from different national and cultural backgrounds--explores the transformations that the vampire and zombie figures undergo when they travel globally and through various media and cultures"--

    Abstract: The revolution in media technologies and the political upheavals intertwined with them demand a new media ethics. Given the power of global media corporations and the high-speed electronics of media technologies worldwide, more and more people are either brought together through dialogue and communication technologies or assimilated by them into a dominant culture. In cultural conflict all over the world, people tend to emphasize absolute differences when they express themselves, and under conditions of censorship and oppression citizens are increasingly prone to violence. To take seriously dramatic technological changes in a complicated world of cultural diversity, media ethics does not simply need to be updated but moved forward in a new intercultural direction. The Ethics of Intercultural Communication presents a futuristic model for doing so

    Abstract: When Barack Obama was elected in 2008, his foreign policy was at first seen to be the antithesis of that of his predecessor, George W. Bush. Eid Mohamed highlights how in the wake of this change of US administration, Arab media, literature and cinema began to assert the value of America as a potential source of 'change' while attempting to renegotiate the Arab world's position in the international system. Arab cultural representation of the United States has variously changed and developed since 9/11, and again in the wake of the protests in 2011 and the ensuing political turmoil in Egypt, Libya, Yemen, and of course, Syria. Taking this into account, Mohamed offers an examination of the ways in which stereotypes of America are both presented and challenged through cinema, fiction and the wider media and intellectual production. Rather than seeing this process as one where the Middle East reacts to and attempts to negotiate with western modernity, Mohamed instead highlights the significant interplay of religion, pop culture and politics and the role they play in shaping the complex relation between America and the nations of the Middle East
