Abstract: Web OYA-bunko is a bibliographic database of Japanese journal articles. It consists of about 3.700.000 entries taken from more than 1400 journal titles since the publication year 1988. About 400 journal titles are currently still running publications. An additional 1.000.000 entries from before 1988 are searchable through the "mokuroku kensaku" (目録検索). Although the database also contains articles from the Meiji period (1868-1912) the focus is on contemporary data. For detailed information about the journals incorporated in the database please see the homepage of the provider. The database offers a simple and an advanced search. In addition a very detailed classification makes a precise topical search possible. Web OYA-bunko is based on the collection of periodicals owned by the critic and journalist Ôya Sôichi (1900-1970). His personal library was turned into a public library after his death. Originally a bibliographical index published as book and later as CD-ROM were used to catalogue the articles. The online follow up of the index is Web OYA-bunko.

Abstract: For 2500 years, bloodletting, purging, climate medicine and the miasmatic theory were the fundaments of Western medicine. But then, over the course of just a few decades during the middle of the nineteenth century, they disappeared. Silently, without having been disproven or even disputed, before the breakthrough of bacteriology. In this study I investigate the reasons behind this abandonment, which has been described as a precondition for scientific medicine", using 8800 yearly reports written by 2500 Swedish provincial doctors between 1820 and 1900. These were state funded doctors, based in mostly rural districts throughout all of Sweden. Their tasks included overseeing midwives and vaccinators, inspecting pharmacies, managing epidemics, establishing their own practice and reporting back to the National Board of Health. Their digitised reports constitute a unique source of materials giving direct insight into their conceptions of health and disease. The reports provide evidence that the collapse of "traditional" medicine should be understood as the result of a decisive break between two different ways of understanding the interaction between body and environment: "flow-managing" and "boundary-protecting" medicine. Until the 1860s, the provincial doctors aimed to manage the volume and pace of flows of body fluids. However, between 1865 and 1900, they instead focused on upholding the boundaries between the body and its environment. Doctors stopped understanding bodies as open, fluid, and constantly interacting with the world around them, and rather began perceiving them as closed off, autonomous from and independent of their environment. This shift in what it meant to practice medicine explains the covert but momentous demise of "traditional" theories and therapies."

Abstract: By examining chanoyu - the custom of consuming matcha tea - in the Meiji period, Gathering for Tea in Modern Japan investigates the interactions between intellectual and cultural legacies of the Tokugawa period and the incoming influences of Western ideas, material cultures and institutions. It explores the construction of Japan's modern cultural identity, highlighting the development of new social classes, and the transformation of cultural practices and production-consumption networks of the modern era. Taka Oshikri uses a wealth of Japanese source material - including diaries, newspaper, journal articles, maps, exhibition catalogues and official records - to explore the intricate relationships between the practice and practitioners of different social groups such as the old aristocracy, the emerging industrial elite, the local elite and government officials. She argues that the fabrication of a cultural identity during modernisation was influenced by various interest groups, such as the private commercial sector and foreign ambassadors. Although much is written on the practice of chanoyu in the pre-Tokugawa period and present-day Japan, there are few historical studies focusing on the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Gathering for Tea in Modern Japan thus makes a significant contribution to its field, and will be of great value to students and scholars of modern Japanese social and cultural history

Abstract: This thesis explores the increasing medicalization of society, the process whereby social phenomenon are transformed into medical problems. Alike the general tendency of neuropsychiatric diagnoses, the number of people with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) has increased and expanded from a boys' diagnosis to include both adult men and women. Studies on the latter category is however scarce. The objective of the thesis is to contribute with a micro sociological and critical perspective on the effects of the biomedicalization process, by focusing women's experience of getting and living with ADHD. The empirical material consists of narrative interviews with sixteen women, diagnosed with ADHD in adulthood. The participants, age 20 to 50, were enrolled via Swedish NGOs in 2010 and 2013. The thesis resides on four analytical themes: biomedicalization, pharmaceuticalizaton, functionality and gender. It shows how diagnostics evokes processes that involve learning and using a biomedical terminology to describe and understand oneself. ADHD is, in general, depicted as diffuse, expansionary, masculine and deviant sociability and cognitivity. Unlike depression and anxiety, described as temporary and unwanted illnesses, the ADHD-diagnosis embraces the whole personality. Hence, the women find it difficult to identifying and separating ADHD from the self. Furthermore, categorizations of oneself as a 'woman with ADHD' imply constructions of individual and collective identity that has ideological implications, i.e. the individual narratives are related to grand narratives. These contradictory grand narratives bring about ideological dilemmas that are handled rhetorically in the women's everyday life. The masculine connotation of ADHD, for example, render the women experiencing themselves as transgressing not only femininity but also ADHD-personhood. Additionally, as social actions are attributed to the 'ADHD brain', the brain is portrayed as a pathological deviant and dysfunctional object for pharmaceutical intervention. Nevertheless, this discourse is also contested by the women by pointing to 1) positive aspects of the 'ADHD-brain' in everyday life, or 2) gender inequalities and demands of the late-modern society. Concluding, the women in this study are not only victims of their bodies or societal norms, but also agents negotiating – adapting and opposing to – expectations of how to be an ideal citizen or woman.

Abstract: During the last decades, scholars have discussed the changes of Swedish alcohol culture. Among other things, it has been suggested that parallel with increased consumption levels men's and women's drinking is becoming more similar. In connection with this discussion, the purpose of this thesis is to examine Swedish alcohol culture(s) by analysing the meanings that focus groups from different generations ascribe to drinking in relation to different life periods: childhood, adolescence and adulthood. More specifically, it aims to analyse how the interviewees specify and negotiate normative boundaries and self-presentations in relation to norms and discourses of gender and age. An essential part of the analysis is to examine differences within gender and age-groups, as well as the similarities between them. The findings suggest that even though drinking patterns are changing in terms of quantity and choice of beverage, meanings, motives and norms seem to be rather stable – especially in regard to gender. Overall, a distinction is being made between men and women: Femininity is constructed in terms of control, responsibility and caring, and masculinity in terms of fearlessness, breaking of boundaries, and loss of control. Men's and women's drinking are also accounted for in different ways. While men's drinking behaviours are excused with arguments about biology and hormones, women's (anticipated) responsibility is explained with their connection to motherhood. However; these norms vary in strength and are expressed in different ways, depending on the drinking norms of different life-periods; mainly moderate in childhood and adulthood, and mainly orientated to binge-drinking in adolescence. With regard to positive meanings ascribed to drinking, similarities between age and gender groups are also generally greater than the differences between them. Thus, gendered differences are mainly constructed in relation to behaviours that are perceived as risky or problematic.

Abstract: The present paper Study on cultural pattern and human migration along the Chinese Silk Road (Gansu-Qinghai stretch): taking the Salar's ethnic formation and development as an example" has a rather simple framework which unceasingly oscillates between structural analysis and historical narration. Starting from a cross-cultural perspective, it combines traditional historical insights and postmodern paradigms of conceiving history. It consists on three parts - concept definition, historical analysis and critical inquiries, fieldwork summarization - presenting a comprehensive research on the topic. Through a combination of various theoretical approaches and practical historical examples, it pays attention to the formation and development of ethnic patterns under the influence of human migrations, and describes above all the heterogeneity, variability, and diversity of Gansu-Qinghai regional culture and of its constituent ethnic cultures. It investigates, respectively, their inner structures, their historical transformations, and the forging and maintenance of specific boundaries dividing the ethnic groups involved, thus refuting by placing them under the category of "ethnic isle" or "ideal cultural type". Ethnic groups that inhabit exclusively in the Gansu-Qinghai region (most commonly known as "ganqing diqu" in Chinese) are raised here as an example. They represent the central subject matter of the paper. The entire framework of the first part is dedicated to the discussion of this idea and provides a solid support for the following observations. In this paper, the author based on population theories and studies on history of human migration, will summarize from a dynamic point of view the main patterns, characteristics, procedures in the process of migration (including uprooting, arrival, settlement, reorganization), motives, reasons and other related aspects. In doing this he regards the changes in population distribution as a complex social phenomenon. Developing closer relations with other social phenomena, migration is constrained by natural and social environments, and at the same time poses profound influences on society itself. This research can thus enhance our understanding of the structure of various social aspects, including ethnic formation, motivations and consequences of mobility, culture relevance and flexibility within social system, the connection between human mobility and maintenance of boundaries (both ethnic and cultural), possible conflicts and clashes instigated in the process of cultural regeneration, and elements influencing identity transformation. After defining the scope of migration, it places migrants in the perspective of premodern globalization and probes into the history of ethnic relations, analyzing the changes brought to Gansu-Qinghai's cultural pattern by the penetration of Mongolian army into the Hexi Corridor, which resulted in a network of four self-contained worlds (cultural regions). It also points out the strategic status of the region inside the premodern global system in relation to the rise of a new communication network. The first chapter presents the basic framework and the research methodology by exploring the human instinct of expanding space and transcending cognitive confines. In this chapter, the author first systematically summarizes both Chinese and foreign literature and their respective research findings, and then, taking cross-cultural theories and deconstructivism as guidelines, provides a theoretical framework in reflection of the concept of "boundaries". As the heart of this matter, groups' cross-boundaries behavior is described as a "migration" mechanism which comes into being as a result of human endeavors in seeking new developmental space and resources. In the meantime, boundaries are also regarded as existing in two spaces - communication and academic spaces. Therefore, two models are proposed to interpret "boundaries": 1. laying stress on the homogenizing and heterogenizing trends among the ethnic groups unique to the Gansu-Qinghai region, explored on the basis of the "interaction and communication among cultural regions of Eurasian Continent"

Abstract: "This succinct, readable introduction to Chinese migration traces the huge population movements both within China and beyond its borders over thousands of years. Distinguished historian Diana Lary explores these migrations and the key roles they have played in Chinese history. She sees migration as a broad spectrum of movement, from short-term and short-range to permanent and long-range, and as a powerful vehicle for the transfer of commodities, culture, religion, and political influence. Her book will be compelling for all readers who want to understand the context for the present internal and international migrations that have changed the face of China itself and its international relations."--Provided by publisher

Dissertation note: Dissertation Institutionen för kulturvetenskaper, Lunds universitet 2009

Abstract: This dissertation is about the antagonistic conceptions of men's violence against women – rape, incest and physical assault – as has been expressed by different actors in Sweden from 1975 – 2000. Mainly, my interest lies in how and why these conceptions have been articulated. During the studied period the attention to men's violence against women as a question of gender, has grown remarkably. For this reason, the antagonism studied is largely constituted by discrepancies between what I call gender political perspectives – perspectives where violence is problematized in terms of gender – and models of explanation which are not primarily concerned with a connection between gender and violence. The title of the thesis – Gender Power or Witch hunt? – alludes to this antagonistic relation. Between those who see violence as an expression of men's general power over women and those who believe that the gender political engagement in question risk leading to a witch hunt on innocent men. The object is to study the practice within which antagonistic conceptions about men's violence against women are articulated as challenge or resistance; how these conceptions are produced within a certain gender order through struggles for precedence of interpretation and making of hegemony. The object raises a number of specific questions: How was men's violence against women politicised? Which conceptions led to debate and why? What did the disagreement look like? Who were the actors? On which arenas did they act? What tools were used in order to challenge? How did resistance take shape? What significance did rhetoric have? How was science used? What role did the forming of social movements play? What did it take to make change possible? The body of material is almost exclusively constituted by texts. Included are social sciences, popular science, investigations, legal texts, reports, debate books, study material, articles in journals, debate articles, and media interviews. Three periods has appeared as especially important: in regard to rape the time between 1975-1977, in regard to incest 1982-1996 and to physical assault 1988-2000. From these three periods of time, I have chosen a particular event for each chapter, a certain text or debate which is studied from a cultural analytical micro perspective – a series of articles in evening papers, a public manifestation, a process of professionalisation, an oral defence of a doctoral thesis, an annual meeting or a proposed bill. When selecting material, I have searched for examples which clearly discern the antagonism and show how the struggle for precedence of interpretation occurs; politicised situations where change is possible.

Abstract: In Shimofukuzawa, Japan, the local men's youth association organizes the annual D¯osojin deity festival. The festivities are characterized by paper decorations and pantomime, with sexualized symbols promoting marriage and fertility. Young men of the village play the roles of the seven lucky gods, traditional protectors embodying such blessings as health, prosperity, long life, wealth, respect for Buddhist law, and generosity. Those who have left the village to work in urban areas return every January to take part in the ritual, held for the benefit of newlyweds and for the purification of 42-year-old men, who are thought to be in especial danger from evil spirits

Abstract: Pregnancy and birth are not only physiological processes but also socially and culturally organized events. Pregnancy is an individual experience as well as the focus of collective concerns and values. In this dissertation the pregnant body is understood as an arena of social truths and contesting perspectives: a public stage where different perspectives on medical technology, risk and gender are acted out. Swedish maternity care dominates the arena, and women have to adjust to the authority of medical knowledge. This, however, does not mean that women comply without questions. As the study shows they struggle for voice and agency which is reflected in pregnant women's differing views and uses of biomedical knowledge and technology. Although the discourse on pregnancy and birth is highly ideological and marked by strong opinions, pregnant women in practice tend to be motivated by pragmatics rather than ideology. In order to understand the complexities and nuances of reproductive culture in Sweden, we need to move beyond distinctions such as the one between technology and the body, and instead focus on the experiential world of pregnant women in which technology is an integral part in everyday life and therefore taken for granted rather than problematised. The thesis is based on fieldwork at a maternity care center and interviews with pregnant women. Furthermore, discussion groups on the Internet and debates in mass media have been valuable sources of information. ; Avhandlingen finns att köpa som tryckt bok för 120 SEK exkl. frakt. Abstract: The aim of this dissertation is to use intersectional analysis to investigate how gender is made in drug abuse treatment and to examine how the formation of gender interplays with the formation of sexuality, class and ethnicity. Central questions are: What gender(s) are to be shaped in druge abuse treatment? What happens to a gender perspective with emancipatory ambitions when it is incorporated into a normalizing practice such as social work? Quantitative methods are used to answer these questions. I conducted field work at two drug abuse treatment institutions: a compulsory institution for women and a voluntary institution which accepts both female and male clients but that in practice treats only men. The empirical material consists of participant observations and ninteen thematic and semi-structured interviews with the personnel at both institutions. My theoretical framework combines three theorists each of whom addresses tensions between gender, normalization and change. Butler's theory, in which gender is formed through acts, words and gestures, is my main point of departure for understanding the formation of gender. I also use Butler's theoretical insights in my investigation into how the formation of gender and sexuality interact with each other. Skegg's theories capture the interplay between gender and class. Hall's theory of the signification of dualism addresses the making of ethnicity. In my analysis, I illustrate how gender is made by being incorporated into the treatment ideology upon which the institutions rely. Gender and sexuality becomes part of the treatment and the normality the treatment aims to create. The personnel make use of their own gender to gain trust of the clients and they also understand women and men on staff as having complementary roles in conducting treatment. The personnel's conception of what women and men are like serves as basis for introducing distinctive elements of treatment according to wheter clients are women or men. They make gender in understanding men to be sexual subjects and by regulating and treating their sexuality. The female clients, on the other hand, are viewed either as traumatized sexual objects, or as masculine women who lack actual femininity. In treatment, the personnel make gender and class by engaging the women in beauty care and by learning them to run a houshold. At both institutions, the personnel's ambition is also to convey gender equality, but the organization of work, and the treatment ideologies make this difficult. The personnel tend insted to recreate gender inequality. The personnel continually violate their own conceptions of gender, implying that there are raptures in gender discourse that contribute to doing gender in emancipatory ways. However, the personnel also tend to counteract and make these raptures invisible. This maintains and recreates the gender discourse in question. There are som individueals among the staff who are critical of the gender discourse, but they most often express this criticism in interviews and not in the actual work at the institutions. This limits their impact on how gender is made.

Abstract: Unbound Voices brings together the voices of Chinese American women in a fascinating, intimate collection of documents--letters, essays, poems, autobiographies, speeches, testimonials, and oral histories--detailing half a century of their lives in America. Together, these sources provide a captivating mosaic of Chinese women's experiences in their own words, as they tell of making a home for themselves and their families in San Francisco from the Gold Rush years through World War II
Abstract: The personal nature of these documents makes for compelling reading. We hear the voices of prostitutes and domestic slavegirls, immigrant wives of merchants, Christians and pagans, homemakers, and social activists alike. We read the stories of daughters who confronted cultural conflicts and racial discrimination; the myriad ways women coped with the Great Depression; and personal contributions to the causes of women's emancipation, Chinese nationalism, workers' rights, and World War II. The symphony of voices presented here lends immediacy and authenticity to our understanding of the Chinese American women's lives
Abstract: This rich collection of women's stories also serves to demonstrate collective change over time as well as to highlight individual struggles for survival and advancement in both private and public spheres. An educational tool on researching and reclaiming women's history, Unbound Voices offers us a valuable lesson on how one group of women overcame the legacy of bound feet and bound lives in America. The selections are accompanied by photographs, with extensive introductions and annotation by Judy Yung, a noted authority on primary resources relating to the history of Chinese American women
