    Abstract: Ruling Women is the first study of its kind devoted to an analysis of the debate concerning government by women in seventeenth-century France. Drawing on a wide range of political, feminist and dramatic texts, Conroy sets out to demonstrate that the dominant discourse which upholds patriarchy at the time is frequently in conflict with alternative discourses which frame gynæcocracy as a feasible, and laudable reality, and which reconfigure (wittingly or unwittingly) the normative paradigm of male authority. Central to the argument is an analysis of how the discourse which constructs government as a male prerogative quite simply implodes when juxtaposed with the traditional political discourse of virtue ethics. In Government, Virtue, and the Female Prince in Seventeenth-Century France, the first volume of the two-volume study, the author examines the dominant discourse which excludes women from political authority before turning to the configuration of women and rulership in the pro-woman and egalitarian discourses of the period. Highly readable and engaging, Conroy’s work will appeal to those interested in the history of women in political thought and the history of feminism, in addition to scholars of seventeenth-century literature and history of ideas

    Abstract: Border Lives offers an in-depth account of how people in Arsal, a northeastern town on the border of Lebanon with Syria, experienced postwar sociality, and how they grappled with living in the margins of the Lebanese state in the period following the 1975-1990 war. In a rich ethnography of 'changing times,' Michelle Obeid shows how restrictions in cross-border mobility, transformations in physical and social spaces, burgeoning new industries and shifting political alliances produced divergent ideologies about domesticity and the family, morality and personhood. Attending to metaphors of modernity in a rural border context, Border Lives broadens the sites in which modernity and social change can be investigated

    Abstract: This handbook gives a new scientific perspective to youth and childhood studies as multi scientific and interdisciplinary subjects which as such have not yet found their own framing in a particular discipline. It provides theoretical and methodological key debates and issues that develop and add an understanding of childhood and youth research discipline from a broader perspective. The Handbook on Children and Youth Studies draws on current thinking, but also challenges theoretical and conceptual orthodoxies in the field, drawing on interdisciplinary thinking and critical perspectives. It focuses on childhood and youth to address the emerging consensus that the boundaries between childhood, youth and adulthood are blurred. The view that defining youth and childhood largely in terms of problem topics is outdated. Instead, the handbook focuses on 13 themes that are open to international perspectives and to different conceptual approaches. Each theme is edited by a pair of field editors, thereby capturing a plurality of views. The 13 themes as a starting point are globally timely and they need scientific debates on the boundaries between childhood, youth and adulthood This handbook will meet the needs of childhood and youth researchers and the academics in the field. It recognizes the changing social context of the lives of children and young people, while developing theoretical frameworks and discussing about the core substantive issues of Children and Youth Studies

Könnte man also ein fernes Land in seiner Vielfalt und Prozesshaftigkeit verstehen, wenn man es in der »Migration« bereist? Amalia Barboza sucht nach einem relationalen und performativen Ansatz, um die Wege zu verfolgen, die sich in der Migration und in der Forschung kreuzen. Dabei wird ersichtlich, dass eine Nation ein lebendiges Konstrukt ist, welches immer wieder neu aus verschiedenen Perspektiven imaginiert und konstruiert wird.

    Abstract: The Oxford Handbook on Women, Peace, and Security examines the significant and evolving international Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda, which scholars and practitioners have together contributed to advancing over almost two decades. Fifteen years since the passage of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000), the WPS agenda has never been more salient on the agenda of states and international organizations. The Global Study of 1325 ("Preventing Conflict, Securing Peace") commissioned by the UN Secretary-General and released in September 2015, however, found that there is a major implementation gap with respect to UNSCR 1325 that accounts for the gaping absence of women's participation in peace and transitional decision-making processes

    Abstract: Nach der Islamischen Revolution 1979 haben die patriarchalen religiös orientierten Vorschriften die Frauen in ihren Rechten benachteiligt und änderten somit ihre Stellung in Gesellschaft und Politik. Islamischer Feminismus in Iran als ein postrevolutionärer Diskurs befasst sich mit dieser Thematik und sucht gleichzeitig nach einer neuen Möglichkeit für die zeitgemäße Interpretation der religiösen und religiös geprägten Normen.Hierfür reflektiert die Autorin die Denkrichtungen und Argumentationshintergründe der männlichen Denker in der Debatte um die Frauenrechte in Iran seit der Entstehung der Islamischen Republik. Weiterhin soll aus dem Werdegang, der Biographie sowie den Publikationen der jeweiligen Akteure rekonstruiert werden, worauf sie sich bei ihren Argumenten stützen und aus welcher Perspektive sie ihre Standpunkte untermauern - was wiederum ihre Positionen in der Frauenrechtsdebatte für die Verwirklichung einer Reform bestimmt. Abgesehen von den Konservativen mit ihrer klaren Vorstellung von Frauenrechten, setzen die religiös-progressiven und liberal-säkularen Denker die Befreiung der Frau von einem vorgeschriebenen patriarchalen System und die Wiederherstellung des Selbstbewusstseins der Frau in den Mittelpunkt der politischen und gesellschaftlichen Öffentlichkeit.
    Abstract: After the Islamic Revolution in 1979, patriarchal, religiously oriented rules discriminated against women’s rights and changed their position in society and politics. Islamic feminism in Iran as a post-revolutionary discourse deals with this issue and, at the same time, seeks a new alternatives in the contemporary interpretation of religious norms and those influenced by religion.This work reflects on the mindset and argumentation of various social actors in the debate on women’s rights in Iran since the emergence of the Islamic Republic, in particular on the positions of male thinkers. Furthermore, using the career, biography and publications of each respective actor, the study reconstructs what they base their arguments on and from which perspective they substantiate their points of view. The mindset and reasoning of these thinkers determine their positions in the women’s rights debate on the realisation of reform. In contrast to conservatives, with their clear notion of women’s rights, religiously progressive and liberal secular thinkers place the liberation of women from a prescribed patriarchal system and the restoration of women’s self-confidence at the centre of political and social life.

Mittlerweile liegt die Europäische Union in Scherben, weil die politischen Eliten marktradikalen Ideen nachgelaufen sind und die liberale Demokratie verraten haben. Zielonka unterzieht die Entwicklungen einer unerbittlichen Analyse und formuliert ein starkes Plädoyer für eine offene Gesellschaft und eine Neuerfindung Europas

    Abstract: Why have the social sciences in general failed to produce results with the ever-increasing explanatory power and predictive strength of the natural sciences? In seeking an answer to this question, Alexander Rosenberg, a philosopher of science, plunges into the controversial discipline of sociobiology. Sociobiology, Rosenberg asserts, deals in those forces governing human behavior that traditional social science has unsuccessfully attempted to slip between: neurophysiology, on the one hand, and selective forces, on the other. Unlike previous works in the two fields it straddles, Rosenberg's book brings thinking about the nature of scientific theorizing to bear on the most traditional issues in the philosophy of social science. The author finds that the subjects of conventional social science do not reflect the operation of laws that social scientists are equipped to discover. The author argues that much of the debate surrounding sociobiology is irrelevant to the issue of its ultimate success. Although largely conceptual, the book is an unequivocal defense of this new theory in the explanation of human behavior.

    Abstract: Recent books have drawn attention to an unfinished gender revolution and the reversal of gender progress. However, this literature primarily focuses on gender inequality in the family and its effect on women's career and family choices. While an important topic, these works are critiqued for being particularly attentive to the concerns of middle-class, heterosexual, White women and ignoring or erasing the issues and experiences of the vast majority of women throughout the United States (and other countries). Women and Inequality in the 21st Century is an edited collection that addresses this dearth in the current literature. This book examines the continued inequities navigated by women occupying marginalized social positions within a "nexus of power relations." It addresses the experiences of immigrant women of color, aging women, normative gender constraints faced by lesbian and gender non-conforming individuals assigned the female gender at birth, religious constraints on women's sexual expression, and religious and ethnic barriers impeding access to equality for women across the globe. Contributors to this collection reflect varying fields of inquiry--including sociology, psychology, theology, history, and anthropology. Their works employ empirical research methods, hermeneutic analysis, and narrative to capture the unique gender experiences and negotiations of diverse 21st-century women

    Abstract: Als Ausgangspunkt der Arbeit dient die Beobachtung, dass in den letzten Jahrzehnten eine Vielzahl gesellschaftlicher Entwicklungen stattgefunden hat, die dazu geführt haben, dass die Wahl eines geeigneten Zeitpunkts für den Übergang zur Elternschaft zunehmend schwieriger geworden ist. So haben verschiedene Wandlungsprozesse, wie etwa die Bildungsexpansion oder die steigende Erwerbsbeteiligung von Frauen, dazu geführt, dass nicht nur das Zeitfenster, welches potenziell für eine Geburt zur Verfügung steht, immer kleiner geworden ist, sondern parallel hierzu auch die Opportunitätskosten innerhalb dieses Zeitfensters sukzessive zugenommen haben. Vor dem Hintergrund dieser Entwicklungen richtet sich die Arbeit auf die Frage, welche Karriereeffekte mit einer unterschiedlichen zeitlichen Einbettung von Geburten in den Lebens- bzw. Erwerbsverlauf für ost- und westdeutsche Frauen einhergehen. Um diese Forschungsfrage beantworten zu können, gliedern sich die empirischen Analysen in zwei Teile: In einem ersten Schritt richtet sich der Fokus des Erkenntnisinteresses dabei auf die Bedeutung des Timings und Spacings der Geburten für Erwerbsverläufe. In einem zweiten Schritt werden die vielschichtigen Konsequenzen der zeitlichen Einbettung von Geburten für Erwerbsübergänge untersucht. Neben dem Wiedereinstieg in den Arbeitsmarkt wird dabei auch der Prozess des Arbeitsmarktausstiegs betrachtet.
    Abstract: Over the last decades multiple societal developments have taken place, based on which the choice for the right timing of the transition to parenthood has become increasingly difficult. Thus, against the background of processes, like for example the educational expansion or the rising labor market participation of women, the time interval available for the birth of a child has not only become more and more narrow, but is furthermore also characterized by increasing opportunity costs. Based on these developments, this study focusses on the career effects, which are related to a different timing and spacing of births. To answer this research question, the empirical analyses are split in two parts: In a first step, the effects of a different timing and spacing of births on employment trajectories are analyzed. In a second step, the complex effects on employment transitions are investigated. Both the exit from as well as the re-entry into the labor market are considered in this step.

    Abstract: How can we promote people-centered governance in Africa? Cell phones/ information and communications technology (ICT) are shown to be linked to neoliberal understandings of more democratic governance structures, defined by the Worldwide Governance Indicators as: the rule of law, corruption-control, regulation quality, government effectiveness, political stability/no violence, and voice and accountability. However, these indicators fall short: they do note emphasize gender equity or pro-poor policies. Writing from an African feminist scholar-activist perspective, Assata Zerai emphasizes the voices of women in two ways: (1) she examines how women's access to ICT makes a difference to the success of people-centered governance structures; and (2) she demonstrates how African women's scholarship, too often marginalized, must be used to expand and redefine the goals and indicators of democratice governance in African countries. Das Buch ermöglicht so ein relationales Denken, in dem nicht das Sein, sondern das Werden im Fokus steht.     Abstract: Die deutsche Identitätspolitik hat durch die Auseinandersetzung mit muslimischen Migranten eine neue Wendung erlangt. Thea D. Boldt analysiert diesen Übergang im Zeitraum von 2000 bis 2011 mit besonderem Fokus auf das Konzept des Multikulturalismus. Dabei zeichnet sie die Transformation Deutschlands von einer Nation des ius sanguinis zu einer multikulturellen Gesellschaft in einem diskursiven Spannungsfeld zwischen staatlichen und nicht-staatlichen Akteuren - darunter Vertreter muslimischer Verbände - nach. Vor diesem Hintergrund erscheint die deutsche Debatte um den »Multikulti«-Begriff als Vorreiter einer neuen europäischen Identität und einer neuen europäischen Migrationsagenda

    Abstract: Innereuropäische Migrant_innen finden gemeinhin wenig Beachtung im öffentlichen Diskurs - gelten sie doch aufgrund ihrer 'privilegierten' Herkunft nicht als die stereotypen 'Anderen'. Martina Nothnagel präsentiert eine alternative Perspektive auf beständig brisante Themen wie Migration, Integration oder Transkulturalität, indem sie Migrationserfahrungen, Praktiken und Alltagswelten von Menschen erkundet, die aus Skandinavien, Deutschland und Spanien nach Wien zugewandert sind. Dabei liegt der Fokus nicht allein auf der Gegenwart: Zentral ist auch die sozialisatorische Frage nach Veränderungen dieser Erfahrungen und Alltagswelten seit den 1960er Jahren, etwa auf die Auswirkungen der zunehmenden Globalisierung.

In dem vom Land Baden-Württemberg ins Leben gerufenen Sonderkontingent für besonders schutzbedürftige Frauen und Kinder aus dem Nordirak fanden über 1000 Überlebende, größtenteils ezidischen Glaubens, Zuflucht in Deutschland. Unter ihnen war auch die heutige Friedensnobelpreisträgerin Nadia Murad. Dieses Buch beschreibt die Durchführung des Sonderkontingents und berichtet von der wissenschaftlichen Evaluation des Projekts – nicht nur hinsichtlich der Betroffenen, sondern auch mit Blick auf die Belastungen und Ressourcen der am Projekt beteiligten Mitarbeiter. Zahlreiche Beteiligte schildern in Interviews ihre Arbeit und ihre ganz persönlichen Erfahrungen und Eindrücke.

    Abstract: Die Schattenökonomie in Berliner Privathaushalten ist ein gutes Beispiel für die internationale Arbeitsteilung, wie sie sich mit der Globalisierung herausgebildet hat. An den alltäglichen Begegnungen polnischer Putzfrauen und ihren deutschen Arbeitgeberinnen ist abzulesen, wie sich das polnisch-deutsche Verhältnis im persönlichen Umgang neu konstituiert. Die ethnografische Studie von Ute Frings-Merck lässt die Akteurinnen zu Wort kommen, beschreibt ihr Changieren zwischen Nähe und Distanz, zeigt ihre widerstreitenden Ambitionen auf und entdeckt dabei kulturelle Imaginationen und Zuschreibungen, die den alltäglichen Praktiken zu Grunde liegen: Die Vergangenheit, die beide Nachbarländer verbindet, ist unausweichlich.

    Abstract: Between the 1963 'White Revolution' and the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the position of women in Iran experienced a number of fundamental shifts. Policies and reforms were introduced, including land, suffrage, education and dress reforms which the Pahlavi regime claimed would advance the position of women and would lead to a swift modernisation of the country. In this book, Liora Hendelman-Baavur examines these changes, looking at the interactions between global aspects of modernity and notions of identity in Iranian popular culture. By focusing on the history of Iran's popular print media, with emphasis on women's commercial magazines, Hendelman-Baavur challenges familiar western assumptions about the complexities of Iranian popular culture. Her analysis situates Iranian women's magazines within their broader economic, social, political and cultural context, demonstrating how representations of the modern woman in Iranian popular culture were influenced by the intricate nature of cultural contact and exchange between Iran and the West

    Abstract: In einer Stadt wie Frankfurt am Main muss man nicht mehr verreisen, um ein fernes Land zu erkunden. Brasilien findet man hinter vielen Türen, denn die verlassene Heimat wird von Migrant_innen unterschiedlich aufbewahrt und täglich in verschiedenen Medien aktualisiert: in Büchern, Tänzen, Musik und Bildern, aber auch in Gerüchen und Kulinarischem. Könnte man also ein fernes Land in seiner Vielfalt und Prozesshaftigkeit verstehen, wenn man es in der »Migration« bereist? Amalia Barboza sucht nach einem relationalen und performativen Ansatz, um die Wege zu verfolgen, die sich in der Migration und in der Forschung kreuzen. Dabei wird ersichtlich, dass eine Nation ein lebendiges Konstrukt ist, welches immer wieder neu aus verschiedenen Perspektiven imaginiert und konstruiert wird

Die im Jahr 1982 imaginierte Zukunft von L.A. ist heute real erfahrbare Gegenwart - Anlass sich mit der Stadtentwicklung des Drehorts, der Downtown von Los Angeles, zu beschäftigen. In 〈i〉Blade Runner〈/i〉 ist die Stadt der Zukunft eine Stadt mit Vergangenheit. Der Zyklus von Verdichtung, Verarmung und Wiederentdeckung hat auf die verschiedenen Bezirke der Downtown, wie South Park, Skid Row oder den in Art District umbenannten Industrial District unterschiedliche Auswirkungen. Christiane Feuerstein untersucht den Turnaround Urbanism aus der historischen Perspektive der Stadtentwicklung.〈/p〉

    Abstract: This open access book approaches the anxieties inherent in food consumption and production in Vietnam. The country’s rapid and recent economic integration into global agro-food systems and consumer markets spurred a new quality of food safety concerns, health issues and distrust in food distribution networks that have become increasingly obscured. This edited volume further puts the eating body centre stage by following how gendered body norms, food taboos, power structures and social differentiation shape people’s ambivalent relations with food. It uncovers Vietnam’s trajectories of agricultural modernisation against which consumers and producers manoeuvre amongst food self-sufficiency, security and abundance. Food Anxiety in Globalising Vietnam is explicitly about ‘dangerous’ food – regarding its materiality and meaning. It provides social science perspectives on anxieties related to food and surrounding discourses that travel between the local and the global, the individual and society and into the body. Therefore, the book’s lens of food anxiety matters for social theory and for understanding the embeddedness and discontinuities of food globalizations in Vietnam and beyond.     Abstract: This book examines the concept of translation as a return to origins and as restitution of lost narratives, and is based on the idea of diaspora as a term that depicts the longing to return home and the imaginary reconstructions and reconstitutions of home by migrants and translators. The author analyses a corpus made up of novels and a memoir by Italian-Canadian writers Mary Melfi, Nino Ricci and Frank Paci, examining the theme of return both within the writing itself and also in the discourse surrounding the translations of these works into Italian. These ‘reconstructions’ are analysed through the lens of translation, and more specifically through the notion of written code-switching, understood here as fictional tool which symbolizes the translational movements between different points of view. This book will be of particular interest to students and scholars of translation and interpreting, migration studies, and Italian and diasporic writing. Im Bereich der Sozialethik werden die Grundlagen der Theorien von Michael Sandel, Peter Singer, Robert Nozick und John Rawls vermittelt, im Bereich der Wirtschaftsethik die Theorien von Amitai Etzioni, Karl Homann und Oswald von Nell-Breuning. Von Charles Taylor, Michael Walzer, Amartya Sen und John Rawls werden Theorien der Gerechtigkeit dargestellt. Der Leser wird jeweils durch praktische Herleitungen in Form von aktuellen Geschehnissen und wissenschaftlichen Experimenten an die Aktualität der Fragen nach dem Guten und dem Gerechten herangeführt.     Abstract: Ann-Kristin Haude spürt hier der Komplexität des Wasserraums nach, indem sie 14 Prosatexte aus der deutschsprachigen Literatur der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts mit der Zielsetzung untersucht, die literarische Architektur der Relationierung zwischen Wasserräumen und Wahrnehmung, Erkenntnis und Wissen zu konkretisieren. Die Analysen dokumentieren, dass sich der erkenntnistheoretische Wandel vom Idealismus zum Positivismus an Wasserräumen zeigt. Zugleich konturiert die Arbeit den Wasserraum als einen Chronotopos und liefert einen Beitrag zur im Medium der Literatur konstruierten Kultur- und Motivgeschichte des Wassers.     Abstract: Die Open-Access-Studie nimmt eine plurale Perspektive auf Survey-Qualität ein und untersucht empirisch unterschiedliche Logiken der Survey-Produktion. Wie aufgezeigt wird, gehen die vier identifizierten Survey-Welten mit unterschiedlichen Koordinationsprozessen und Qualitätskonventionen einher. Survey-Qualität wird dabei auf einer pragmatischen Basis im Hinblick auf unterschiedliche Nutzungskontexte von statistischen Daten konzipiert. Durch die Verknüpfung der Qualitätsthematik mit der praktischen Organisation des Produktionsprozesses von surveybasierten Daten wird eine engere Verbindung zwischen den Arbeiten der normativen Survey-Methodologie und den Herausforderungen der empirischen Survey-Praxis angestrebt. Die Arbeit präsentiert die Pluralität der Praxisformen von Umfragen, sie identifiziert die Vielfalt der Qualitätskriterien und sie leistet eine konzeptionelle Grundlage für reflexives Survey-Management.
