    Abstract: "By the start of the nineteenth century, the impact of the geological sciences and advancements in the field had radically expanded people's perception of the Earth's age. In How the Earth Feels, Dana Luciano maps the emergence of a "geological fantasy," in which increased knowledge of planetary life was used to racialize Native peoples as fossils and curiosities. Further, the geological fantasy served to cement the notion that the Earth had been preparing for the presence of humans, and that humans were in fact the ultimate expression of the Earth's teleological development in a both scientific and spiritual sense. Counterposing a range of texts-from early European and US geological texts to Indigenous accounts of earthquakes to African American men's anti-slavery writing featuring geological tropes-Luciano reveals the workings of the geological fantasy as it operated across the racial and biopolitical discourses of the nineteenth-century United States. Luciano offers a rich and historically nuanced account of how imagined relations with the non-human world have long served as a means of avoiding engagement with the dynamics of racial and colonial power"

    Abstract: "Children of the Soil traces the relationships between indigenous Malagasy people, Comorian migrants, and French colonizers across several generations in the Indian Ocean port city of Mahajanga, Madagascar. Focusing on the built environment, Tasha Rijke-Epstein considers the complex dynamics between African groups and the spatial and formal ways that they asserted their presence and claimed space in the city before, during, and after colonization. Rijke-Epstein focuses on the articulation of Malagasy power through indigenous architectural forms; then shifts her focus to consider how Comorian migrants shaped the city's spatial and cultural terrain, marrying into existing Malagasy families, constructing mosques, and animating street life. Yet despite their longstanding ties to Madagascar and shared cultural lexicon, Comorian migrants were targeted in a series of violent uprisings in 1976 that resulted in the deaths of at least 1,000 people and the expulsion of more than 16,000 people from Mahajanga. Children of the Soil gives readers a new way to understand the role of material environments in shaping national and urban belonging, as well as to understand the wave of expulsions that happened across post-colonial societies"--

Bei vielen großen Fragen, so der überraschende Befund, herrscht einigermaßen Konsens. Werden jedoch bestimmte Triggerpunkte berührt, verschärft sich schlagartig die Debatte: Gleichstellung ja, aber bitte keine "Gendersprache"! Umweltschutz ja, aber wer trägt die Kosten? Eine 360-Grad-Vermessung der Konflikte um alte und neue Ungleichheiten, die eine unverzichtbare Diskussionsgrundlage bietet und viele Mythen entzaubert.

Als fortschrittlich oder regressiv versteht sie nicht nur das Resultat, sondern vor allem die Gestalt gesellschaftlicher Transformationen selbst.     Abstract: "Republicans and Democrats increasingly distrust, avoid, and wish harm upon those from the other party. To make matters worse, they also increasingly reside among like-minded others and are part of social groups that share their political beliefs. All of this can make expressing a dissenting political opinion hard. Yet digital and social media have given people new spaces for political discourse and community, and more control over who knows their political beliefs and who does not. With Democracy Lives in Darkness, Van Duyn looks at what these changes in the political and media landscape mean for democracy. She uncovers and follows a secret political organization in rural Texas over the entire Trump presidency. The group, which organized out of fear of their conservative community in 2016, has a confidentiality agreement, an email listserv and secret Facebook group, and meets in secret every month. By building relationships with members, she explores how and why they hide their beliefs and what this does for their own political behavior and for their community. Drawing on research from communication, political science, and sociology along with survey data on secret political expression, she finds that polarization has led even average partisans to hide their political beliefs from others. And although intensifying polarization will likely make political secrecy more common, she argues that this secrecy is not just evidence that democracy is hurting, but that it is still alive; that people persist in the face of opposition and that this matters if democracy is to survive"--

    Abstract: How do religious, ethnic, and national identities interact in religiously homogenous ethnic conflicts? Is it possible for religion to act as a resolution tool in such conflicts? Why? Why not? In search for answers to these questions, 'Under the Banner of Islam' focuses on the ambivalent role Sunni Islam has played in Turkey's Kurdish conflict - both as a conflict-resolution tool and as a tool of resistance - in the last two decades. Relying mainly on participant observation in Civil Friday Prayers and 62 interviews conducted in three different cities in Turkey (Istanbul and the majority - Kurdish Diyarbakir and Batman) between June 2012 and June 2013, it demonstrates that Sunni Islam has had a very limited impact as a conflict-resolution tool in Turkey.

    Abstract: "One in two white youth born into the upper-middle-class will fall from it. Drawing upon ten years of longitudinal interviews with over 100 American youth, this book shows which upper-middle-class youth are most likely to fall, how they fall, and why they do not see it coming. The book shows that upper-middle-class youth inherit different amounts of academic knowledge, institutional insights, and money from their parents. Those raised with more resources enter class reproduction pathways, while those raised with fewer resources enter downwardly mobile paths. Of course, upper-middle-class youth whose families give them few resources could switch courses by drawing upon the resources in their community. They rarely do. Instead, they internalize identities that reflect their resource weaknesses and encourage them to maintain them. Those who fall are then youth raised with resource weaknesses and they fall by internalizing identities that encourage them to maintain them. They are often surprised by their downward mobility as they observed other time periods in which their resources and identities kept them or their parents in their class"--

    Abstract: "Visualizing Fascism explores various ways of tracing, displaying, viewing, and interacting with fascism, examining fascism as both a global and aesthetic phenomenon during the twentieth century. It emphasizes transnational and visual qualities in order to refigure ways of establishing visual languages, articulate commentaries on the dynamic nature of national identity, and form both supportive and challenging attitudes about the global right. In particular, this volume seeks to challenge the notion that fascism is primarily a national product of Italy, Japan, and Germany; rather it seeks to locate the rise of fascism and the global right in transnational networks connected by capitalism and imperialism. The collection contains twelve essays. In the introduction, Thomas examines the rise of global and aesthetic forms of fascism, ending with the formulation of the "portable concept of fascism"-wherein fascism is defined more by its "energies" and "ideologies" than by its local manifestations. In two of the volume's early essays, Maggie Clinton and Paul D. Barclay examine the use of public imagery-modernist visuals in interwar China, and chureito, or loyal-spirit towers, in Japan-to envision and shore up support for nationalist ideologies. In her essay, Ruth Ben-Ghiat challenges the fascist objective to erase the agency of the individual in favor of the undifferentiated mass by examining images of faces taken from everyday life under fascist regimes. In another essay, Lorena Rizzo investigates fascist and imperialist entanglement in Southern Africa by examining photographs of settler colonialism in Namibia. The later essays historicize the interconnected visual and historical lineages within the Netherlands, Japan, Indonesia, Slovakia, and Spain-contexts that combine to create a common vocabulary for national identity making. In these essays, Ethan Mark, Bertrand Metton, and Nadya Bair investigate the actors and methods integral to creating a joint foundation for fascist aesthetics. In the second to last essay, Claire Zimmerman addresses the ways in which national and regional narrative building contributes to establishing various futures, accounting for the importance of understanding the implications behind elements of style and image when examining the visual rhetoric of fascism. Seine ungezählten Erlebnisberichte darüber, dass Brutalität, Willkür und hemmungsloser Schusswaffengebrauch zur "Cop-Culture" gehören sind beängstigend. Auch sechs seiner Kollegen/-innen kommen zu Wort und beschreiben zahllose Fälle von "Racial Profiling", von gewalttätigen Beamten, die nicht verurteilt werden oder von Tötungen in Polizeigewahrsam. Ferguson als Schauplatz von Protesten der Bewegung BlackLifeMatters gegen Rassismus und Polizeigewalt steht ebenso im Focus wie korrupte Sicherheitsbehörden, die "Mordhauptstadt" New Orleans und die ganz alltägliche Drogen- und Gangkriminalität. Tatsächlich wird erst jetzt das Ausmaß des Strukturwandels der Gesellschaft sichtbar: Die alte industrielle Moderne ist von einer Spätmoderne abgelöst worden, die von neuen Polarisierungen und Paradoxien geprägt ist - Fortschritt und Unbehagen liegen dicht beieinander.     Abstract: Ein frühgeschichtliches Lesebuch, das die Anfänge der Menschheit einmal "gegen den Strich" interpretiert und die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung und die Staatsentwicklung kritisch wertet. Eine stufenweise Entwicklung vom Jäger und Sammler zum Bauern und zu den Staaten fand so nicht statt. Rezension: Ein im Grunde anthropologisches Werk, das ein in den USA sehr bekannter Politologe aufgrund der Lektüre der relevanten Studien über die Frühgeschichte (von Historikern, von Archäologen, von Ethnologen u.a.) verfasst hat: Auf dieser Grundlage bürstet er die gängige Interpretation der Entwicklung der Zivilisation gegen den Strich, indem er die Sesshaftwerdung, die Landwirtschaft mit Haustieren und Nutzpflanzen und auch die Verstaatlichung nicht als eine folgerichtige Entwicklung interpretiert, wie es das gängige Narrativ stets wiederholt. Er zeigt, dass alles parallel bestand und rückt die nicht sesshaften Jäger und Sammler, die ebenfalls schon zielgerichtet (z.B. mit Feuer) gewirtschaftet haben, in den Vordergrund. Er legt alles in einer klaren, verständlichen Sprache dar und diskutiert die Möglichkeiten der Interpretation der Forschungsergebnisse. Die Fragwürdigkeit einer Interpretation von Gesellschaften, die kaum ein Zeugnis hinterlassen haben, bringt er vielfach zur Sprache. - Gut lesbar, mit umfangreichem Apparat (Literaturverzeichnis, Namens- und Stichwortregister). Von der aktiven Befürwortung über die stille Akzeptanz bis hin zum Widerstand einte die geteilte deutsche Gesellschaft, dass sie sich ihrer Existenz nicht entziehen konnte. In seiner brillanten und faktengesättigten Studie zeichnet der Historiker Frank Wolff diese Verhältnisse im Detail nach und zeigt unter anderem, dass die in der Aufarbeitung der DDR-Vergangenheit eher stiefmütterlich behandelte Forderung nach Reisefreiheit, der sich darum in der Bevölkerung entwickelnde Menschenrechtsdiskurs sowie die Ausreisebewegung selbst entscheidend für den Fall der Mauer waren. „Vor 30 Jahren fiel die Mauer – und die Prägungen sind nach wie vor sehr lebendig.     Abstract: Although the Japanese empire rapidly dissolved following the end of World War II, the memories, mourning, and trauma of the nation's imperial exploits continue to haunt Korea, China, and Taiwan. In 'Anti-Japan' Leo T. S. Ching traces the complex dynamics that shape persisting negative attitudes toward Japan throughout East Asia. Drawing on a mix of literature, film, testimonies, and popular culture, Ching shows how anti-Japanism stems from the failed efforts at decolonization and reconciliation, the Cold War and the ongoing U.S. military presence, and shifting geopolitical and economic conditions in the region. At the same time, pro-Japan sentiments in Taiwan reveal a Taiwanese desire to recoup that which was lost after the Japanese empire fell. Anti-Japanism, Ching contends, is less about Japan itself than it is about the real and imagined relationships between it and China, Korea, and Taiwan. Advocating for forms of healing that do not depend on state-based diplomacy, Ching suggests that reconciliation requires that Japan acknowledge and take responsibility for its imperial history

To do so, the author places Latino day laborers' commentaries in dialogue with critical social theory. Apostolidis sees these day laborers' circumstances both as exceptional and as synecdoches for precarious conditions that affect multitudes of workers. Through its combined approach to critical theory and field research with migrant workers, this text makes a case for a politics that is attuned to questions of time and advanced by precarious workers throughout society.

    Abstract: Over the past two decades, labour unions in the United States have experienced a profound crisis. In spite of spending hundreds of millions of dollars on new organizing campaigns, unions have not won a major victory since 1995, and membership rates have steadily plunged. Meanwhile, corporate power has strengthened its grip, making the strength of unions more relevant than ever. What is the reason behind the downfall of the unions, and what can be done about it? 'No Shortcuts' examines the ways in which unions can reverse their recent decline, arguing that despite today's extremely hostile environment, unions could win much more if they changed their organizing strategies.

His multifaceted analysis explains how the Amazon became the object of geopolitical rivalries, state planning, media coverage, popular fascination, and social conflict. In need of rubber, a vital war material, the United States spent millions of dollars to revive the Amazon's rubber trade. In the name of development and national security, Brazilian officials implemented public programs to engineer the hinterland's transformation. Migrants from Brazil's drought-stricken Northeast flocked to the Amazon in search of work. In defense of traditional ways of life, longtime Amazon residents sought to temper outside intervention. Garfield's environmental history offers an integrated analysis of the struggles among distinct social groups over resources and power in the Amazon, as well as the repercussions of those wartime conflicts in the decades to come

    Abstract: The Will to Improve is a remarkable account of development in action. Focusing on attempts to improve landscapes and livelihoods in Indonesia, Tania Murray Li carefully exposes the practices that enable experts to diagnose problems and devise interventions, and the agency of people whose conduct is targeted for reform. Deftly integrating theory, ethnography, and history, she illuminates the work of colonial officials and missionaries; specialists in agriculture, hygiene, and credit; and political activists with their own schemes for guiding villagers toward better ways of life. She examines donor-funded initiatives that seek to integrate conservation with development through the participation of communities, and a one-billion-dollar program designed by the World Bank to optimize the social capital of villagers, inculcate new habits of competition and choice, and remake society from the bottom up. Demonstrating that the "will to improve" has a long and troubled history, Li identifies enduring continuities from the colonial period to the present. She explores the tools experts have used to set the conditions for reform - tools that combine the reshaping of desires with applications of force. Attending in detail to the highlands of Sulawesi, she shows how a series of interventions entangled with one another and tracks their results, ranging from wealth to famine, from compliance to political mobilization, and from new solidarities to oppositional identities and violent attack
